they played at my fathers bar this summer, this guy singing is nuts, his energy is awesome and he just kills it, my ears felt like they were going to explode
Awesome song, incredible drumming. This guy, The National's drummer, and Grizzly Bear's drummer are the best around in Indie Rock, in my humble opinion.
absolutely amazing song!!!! to be able to have that much anger,venom,energy...most people would be smashing down walls. but to be able to express that through a song... genius!!
Love it, so many good tunes from them! Funny, Letterman's comment at the end, "...put that on to wake up...". Just viewed another cool Walkmen tune, and think these guys were on the same line, type in "Thinking of a Dream I had" (vid with banister pictured)
Wow, looked these guys up due to them opening the Main Stage on Saturday of Reading 2010. Great stuff- comparisons to Interpol are obvious- but this is a great song, pleased to have discovered it!
Saw this lot at The Cockpit years ago, excellent tune. The bassist sweated like a dripping tap. I can see the singer barfing up after this performance.
i saw them three or four years ago. when that little dude walked on stage i thought...no...yes...HE IS GETTING BEHIND THE DRUMSET. still haven't seen a better live drummer. cept maybe deerhoof dude. dude kills.
"When I used to go out, I knew everyone I saw. Now I go out alone, if I go out at all". Think everyone's been there after a bad break up. Sharing friends with partners sucks. Keep everything seperate!
I've heard once that they use Vox Tonebender fuzz pedals (the original ones, of course), through original Fender Blackfaces. As for the cymbals, well, being that the band does not seem to have a single thing younger than 1970, I'm going to guess these are vintage Zildjian Ks or the like. They have that dark characteristic about them.
I just remembered on the Waklmen's old website they had some live tracks and one was a cover of an irish ballad. Does anyone remember the song or have the MP3? I wanna say it was the Dubliner's "On Ragland Road" but I just have a fond memory of them performing that song.
how is this song so good...i heard this the first time three years ago, and it's still as powerful now as it was back then. brilliant song. and as a side note, another testament to Letterman in getting musical guests. he and (old) Conan could run the tables in getting the best indie bands out there. shame Conan had to shift demographics with his new time slot.
I don't know why but I've always thought the song was a conversation between two people who slit ways. The first part is one person confronting the other: "you got a nerve to be calling my number". And the "Going out alone" bit is the other person mentioning it's current living: "Now I go out alone, if I go out at all...". That's one of the saddest lines ever,...
@Postglobalism i love the strokes, in fact they are my favorite band, but your comment makes no sense, this song is brilliant in every fuckin possible way
Always find this a quite emotional song. When a relationship goes wrong, and you lose all dignity, and find yourself a bit friendless and lonely for a few weeks! Think he's basically singing about his friends deserting him, after he acted a bit like a dick after a break up
Right, that would make sense, but The Walkmen are definite patrons of ridiculously expensive and vintage gear. I'm saying that it's possible he does have a vault load of vintage cymbals! But of course, it's possible that he plays newer stuff live; I'm just saying that I know for a fact he uses vintage cymbals on their records.
allth3s4me, how many times are you going to post that? and in multiple videos too! we get it, you're an awesome drummer. give yourself a pat on the back
@peleadeescrotos it's true! and how about that line in the title track from the same album, where he says " nothing's wrong.. " as if someone imaginary had asked him if there was something wrong.. that line kills me too.
I can definitely see the comparison between the two bands, but I think the walkmen have a better use of melody, not to mention a much better drummer haha
oh of course.. people bust out the most rare musical equipment to get that instruments distinct mysticism which is even harder to attempt to produce without such gear but yah for sure.. they bust out the a#1 gear for the recording.. its half the fun really
@MrGutley is stupid bring Interpol for here, i prefer more The Walkmen... if the rest of the songs was of this level song"the rat", but in the end a love the 2 bands
@jonathanwing from how hard that drummer is banging... i doubt that his cymbals would be from the 70s unless he has a vault load of em... plus newer cymbals are more tits sounding.. zildj makes some crazy new shit all the time
they played at my fathers bar this summer, this guy singing is nuts, his energy is awesome and he just kills it, my ears felt like they were going to explode
Awesome song, incredible drumming. This guy, The National's drummer, and Grizzly Bear's drummer are the best around in Indie Rock, in my humble opinion.
10 years and this is still so true
absolutely amazing song!!!! to be able to have that much anger,venom,energy...most people would be smashing down walls. but to be able to express that through a song... genius!!
billant band,,, great singer ... amazing drummer... this song is a punch in the stomach ... wooow :)
One of the greatest live shows I have seen at First Ave.
I have seen them twice at Pitchfork and they are AMAZING. Great vocals and just a great band in general.
the vocal is so full of passion and hate!!! anyone who has suffered for love knows what he is feeling ..

Saw them last night in Orlando...they opened for Kings of Leon...they were very good.
gotta be one of the best songs ever!!!!
Awesome song. Simple and very effective!
Kickass drummer.
one of the better live singers and bands i've seen!
I wish they would've done the full intro with the drumming. I love the drumming on this song.
Heard this on Dirt 2 and had to google it. What a song, love it. It's the first I've heard of them to be honest. Will be lookin them up!!

I'm seeing them september 6th!
Can't wait.
The drummers fantastic.
i know a good song when i ear it, and this is a very very good one. period.

Seeing them in two weeks in SF... yay!
What a singer he is.
tight, intense, tight and intense,.........you light the cigarrette and the room explodes, that's how it feels like
1:37 to 2:00 is a great section. Something about it makes it feel really emotional to me. Perfect section to ride my motorcycle in.
I agree fully so sick!
The drummer rocks!
God only knows how this most excellent band didn't hit it big after this song.
Saw this lot at The Cockpit years ago, excellent tune.
The bassist sweated like a dripping tap.
I can see the singer barfing up after this performance.
dare i say it. keith moonISH such an underrated band
THE BEST
fucking great band
i saw them three or four years ago. when that little dude walked on stage i thought...no...yes...HE IS GETTING BEHIND THE DRUMSET.

dude kills.
hahah so true.
i fucking love this song
It's cool that letterman digs 'em.
And the winner is!!!!!! itaiinc
@jonathanwing I wouldn't doubt it. They have insane tone all over their recordings.
Matt Helders is great as well. Forgot to mention him. Also, I completely agree with your screen name.
GO LITTLE DRUM DUDE GO!

I miss the driving rock songs.
Hell yeah, you know it!
"When I used to go out, I knew everyone I saw. Now I go out alone, if I go out at all".
Think everyone's been there after a bad break up. Sharing friends with partners sucks. Keep everything seperate!
man they rock soo much, shame their not bigger
holy shit!!! this is pretty much exactly like the studio version.
A LA STROKES< ETC. WOW?
I've heard once that they use Vox Tonebender fuzz pedals (the original ones, of course), through original Fender Blackfaces.
As for the cymbals, well, being that the band does not seem to have a single thing younger than 1970, I'm going to guess these are vintage Zildjian Ks or the like. They have that dark characteristic about them.
this is immense
Art thou kidding? One hopes for a tongue in a cheek? A tiny bit of distance?
Come on, come on: this drummer is very, very good.
I just remembered on the Waklmen's old website they had some live tracks and one was a cover of an irish ballad. Does anyone remember the song or have the MP3? I wanna say it was the Dubliner's "On Ragland Road" but I just have a fond memory of them performing that song.
wow..........that drummer is intense.
That drummer's a wildman.
@carlo88moe i just started crying after watching that like twenty times. thank you.
So good
great vocal performance- pure venom
At least I'm not the only one who hears it.
I love yoU!
how is this song so good...i heard this the first time three years ago, and it's still as powerful now as it was back then. brilliant song.
and as a side note, another testament to Letterman in getting musical guests. he and (old) Conan could run the tables in getting the best indie bands out there. shame Conan had to shift demographics with his new time slot.
The band U2 could've become. Only just discovered this song and I'm only sad because one day I won't love it as much as I do now.
he walkmen are cool that way
I don't know why but I've always thought the song was a conversation between two people who slit ways. The first part is one person confronting the other: "you got a nerve to be calling my number". And the "Going out alone" bit is the other person mentioning it's current living: "Now I go out alone, if I go out at all...". That's one of the saddest lines ever,...
@Postglobalism i love the strokes, in fact they are my favorite band, but your comment makes no sense, this song is brilliant in every fuckin possible way
agamedes check out ZODRHI !
dirt2!!!!
Always find this a quite emotional song.
When a relationship goes wrong, and you lose all dignity, and find yourself a bit friendless and lonely for a few weeks!
Think he's basically singing about his friends deserting him, after he acted a bit like a dick after a break up
the real name of the song is tenley town i think
man I loved the part from 1:09 - 1:19
god their drummer is fucking good.
rock is not dead.
Heh, Matt Barrick; wind him up and watch him go... And go, and go... XD
jess, he sings that way
wow the letterman sound technician didn't drop the ball on this one
where is the song 'this job is killing me'?
(from thp8)???
Right, that would make sense, but The Walkmen are definite patrons of ridiculously expensive and vintage gear. I'm saying that it's possible he does have a vault load of vintage cymbals!

saw em live yesterday, they were opening for fleet foxes! :D but soo sad, cant find my fave. song by them :( something about moon river? O.o
no colors? they have a "red river" and another one titled "red moon".
you probably did find it by now. its been five yrs :)
@Mewzickchannel haha, nice
allth3s4me, how many times are you going to post that? and in multiple videos too! we get it, you're an awesome drummer. give yourself a pat on the back
@TheJfunk91 cause you know the walkmen were around before the killers and frans ferdinand, so it's more like they sound like the walkmen lulzz
Walkmen are one of the few bands who are even better live.
barrick is an amazing drummer, up there with the likes of the national's bryan devendorf
This performance IS unbelieveable.. amazing band. Amazing drummer. What's with this Strokes hate, The Strokes are fucking amazing, too!
@peleadeescrotos it's true! and how about that line in the title track from the same album, where he says " nothing's wrong.. " as if someone imaginary had asked him if there was something wrong.. that line kills me too.
Good call on the Steve Morris comparison. And yeah Ross gets shite bands. Letterman should do a UK show ha
I can definitely see the comparison between the two bands, but I think the walkmen have a better use of melody, not to mention a much better drummer haha
quality
theysound alot like the strokes
Ahahahaahh!
i kind of seem them as the strokes for people who don't really like the strokes
the drummer has such great technique to keep up that long! what's his name?
Matt barrick
i dare you to air drum this.
lol deffinatly sounds like it but i think he says
terrific rock n roll band
@5cot99 yeah that's exactly how I describe them to people--similar the Strokes
Isabella Ramirez kinda like ZODRHI !?
oh of course.. people bust out the most rare musical equipment to get that instruments distinct mysticism which is even harder to attempt to produce without such gear but yah for sure.. they bust out the a#1 gear for the recording.. its half the fun really
