Is This Africa Or South America!? Suriname's Maroons (

  • Suriname is a very interesting country. Hundreds of years ago, escaped slaves hid in the Amazon rainforest, forming new tribes out of people that came from various parts of Africa. Today, these villages still speak African languages and maintain some of the traditions from the continent. These are the Maroon villages, and there's nothing like them anywhere else. You could say it's "the most African place outside of Africa".
    Feeling a bit nostalgic for Africa after my travels in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Nigeria, I was happy to visit the place.

    I’m so proud of how your channel has grown and the type of content you make. No rude comments, no political ideologies hidden in your conversations, no lessening the troubles you see and the greatness of the human spirit you encounter. You’re a tad risky but with enough street smarts to know how to navigate and maintain situations perfectly. Thank you for being a positive American ambassador in these foreign countries. I hope you’re well and having a blast. Just thanks Tommy.

      most West Africans decendants who went to Suriname during Trans Atlantic
      Slave Trade came from Ghana and still speak a form of Twi.

    Suriname is a beautiful country with mixed races due to slavery. The country itself is in South Amerika. However you will find people with African, Indian, Indonesian, Javanese, Chinese and Dutch roots. A very beautiful country with amazing people. Suriname used to a colony of the Netherlands indeed, at some point it got taken by the UK and later on the Netherlands got "their colony" back. The country has great soil, beautiful tropical sights and during summer periods it can be very hot. The fruits are exotic and the food is amazing! Because there the county is filled with mixed races you will find several different cultural dishes.

    Some of the "tongo" (tongue) is the same as Jamaica. For e.g., "Me a g'weh" = "Me a go 'way" (for "I'm leaving") is quite normal for us Yardies. Great episode, Tom. Thanks.
    --Æ.

    • @MrAfusensi
      @MrAfusensi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      You're right. Some more similarities i noticed between patwa and sranan tongo are words like unnu - s'don (siddung) - fos' (fos as in first) - doti (dutty) - pikin (pikney) - nyan (nyam) - tan - bakra, dyuku (jook). And much more. Not surprising as our language shares the same origins with the biggest difference being a the level of exposure to english and dutch, as Suriname became a dutch colony after sranan tongo was conceived.

    • @AckeeEater.
      @AckeeEater. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@MrAfusensi Super interesting! More Yardies should go visit; I certainly will. There's also the Njukka Maroon tribe there too with similar history and background.
      Tom did point out the high percentage of Akan Twi (centered in Ghana) in their language; Jamaica has a good portion of said Twi in our Patois too, and hence some of the similarities.

    Hey Tommy. So, now you've also picked up a good bit of Saramaccan language which until now I had no idea existed. I was thinking after your last video how amazing the human mind is with it's ability to process and store so much, your ability to take on so many languages as an example./You're always great with the kids you come across wherever you end up. Would likely be a great pop to your own someday. Take care, be safe. See ya next time. Peace, from Tennessee.

    Tommy!!! 250k!!! Gefeliciteerd! Congratulations!!! Been watching a lot of travel vloggers on YT over the years from B&B, Harold Balder, Indigo Traveler and a host of others that I can't think of rn. But you sir have been a breath of fresh air! So informative yet not contrived or snooty in anyway. You're genuine personality is infectious and I believe brings the best out in the people you show in your videos.
    Thankyou, keep it up and I look forward to the future! Veel plezeer! Tot ziens!
