    I've been down this Finnish rabbit hole for almost two years now. Each of those singers are amazing, and you'll have an amazing reaction journey with each of them. JP Leppäluoto, Jarkko Ahola, Tony Kakko and of course Marko. They grouped together again for Raskasta Joulua (with others too), and sing Christmas Carols each year, with a metal vibe - lots of great songs to react to for the holiday season. Raskasta joulua is led by the guitarist Erkka Korhonen, and all the other band members you see here are part of it too. Each and every one of them accomplished musicians.

    I just did this song last week on my livestream! To say I was blown away is an understatement!!! Marko, Jarkko, JP, and Tony are kings! And to have them together is a such a treat! You should see their cover of HOLY DIVER!!! It’s with Powerless Trio though!!! Powerless Trio is Marko’s other band with JP! Marko also has Tarot, and his self titled band! THIS song was SPECIAL!!! To see so many legends on the stage is absolutely amazing! You should also see Jarkko’s cover of “Walking in the air” oh my gawd 😱 it’s FLAWLESS!!! Oh and check out JP with Dark Sarah! My favorite is “Dance with the Dragon” omg it’s sooooo so good! I’m throughly convinced Finland has bred some of the best musicians in the whole wide world! Great reaction! He sent the camera back to 1985! The guy you said had a great voice (they ALL Do 😂) is Jarkko Ahola! He’s flipping amazing! Tony Kakko is also amazing! He’s in Sonata Arctica!!! And he’s also the bff of Tuomas from Nightwish! Oh you have NO clue what rabbit hole you just dove down with these guys! To compare them to Pantera and their covering Black Sabbath’s “Planet Caravan”, is awesome! Dude, I’m really enjoying your content! Keep it going and you will do very well!!! My only recommendation is to back up the video (a tad) when you pause, just so you don’t miss anything! Best wishes, Jen
    Edit: What I loved most about this performance, each of them brought their all!!!

I've been down the Finnish rabbit hole since the beginning of 2000. I'm half Finnish myself living in Sweden so I mostly listen to Nordic music anyway 😘 I love your channel and especially your Nightwish reactions. Years ago I bought Northern Kings album and I was amazed of the fantastic orchestra arragements...I read on the cd credits that were made by Mikko P. Mustonen...but no mention to which orchestra was used...Then, I just phoned him (Finland😂) and asked him about that. He just told me that everything was done using a symphonic library...😮. He is really a master on that and has worked with many metal artists, creating wonderful orchestrations....

    Eurovision is a competition, but this is not the Eurovision contest but the finals from Finland to choose the representative for the contest. As some people commented this was the Finnish Eurovision final to find the act that represented Finland in Eurovision, so I'm going to point out the pink elephant in the comments Erik you must check Lordi's performance in Eurovision as Winners, once they announced the winner, they go back to the stage and they play the winning song one more time. Lord didn't get much support from Yle the Finland channel affiliated to Eurovision, so Lordi ask their fans for donations, if I'm not wrong they crowdfunded 5000 euros to embellish their performance, I was going to donate, by the time I tried they already got funded. I don't want to mention more stuff about Lordi and that amazing performance so I hope a lot of the people enjoying your reviews just like my comment enough so we can catch your attention and you decide to watch this without finding out many things about the performance and the band. I felt so proud of seeing Mr. Lordi and the gang winning the pop contest

He is indeed from Charon back in the day; if you’re not familiar with them I particularly both 4 Seasons Rushnand Desire You, though I’m not well versed in official videos or live performances. JP spent a few recent years working with Dark Sarah, a cinematic metal project from Finland. Dance With the Dragon is a personal favorite, with a semi-sinister vibe in the vein of Alice in Wonderland meets Phantom of the Opera. Glad you were not harsh with them since Northern Kings do not take themselves very seriously, it is a tongue in cheek kind of a project.

  • @JariJuslin
    @JariJuslin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This was indeed a mid-contest guest visit.
    Finland has the highest metal band per capita ratio in the world, so bands that break through tend to be very good in their technical competence.
    Tony Kakko is known from Sonata Arctica. Paid in Full or Full Moon might work for introduction to them.
    Jarkko Ahola is from Teräsbetoni, Dreamtale and solo career. If you want him to show metal singers *can* sing, check his solo Nessun Dorma, which is certainly not a radio hit but a challenging and well known opera piece.
    The fourth guy is JP Leppäluoto from Charon.

    • @JariJuslin
      @JariJuslin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Teräsbetoni, literally steely concrete, meaning reinforced concrete, was a kind of Manowar tribute/parody band, but they were so good they had some songs that far surpassed the originals in Finnish media. Taivas lyö tulta was one of the biggest hits on one summer.

    • @JariJuslin
      @JariJuslin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The project was started by the guitarist Erkka Leppänen years ago and his band and various metal singers released three albums of metal versions of Christmas carols. On these records and live gigs the singers fluctuated a bit depending on who happened to be off touring at each point. It was a way for them to relax and have fun and maybe get into Christmas spirit while at it.
      After these three records and numerous gigs these four singers and the band released two albums of covers of pop songs and I think got some precious metal records for them. On receiving one of these tokens on Christmas carol gig stage Marko also commented it was also a bit of fun in the sense of seeing if 'true metal' folks get upset by this.

    • @JariJuslin
      @JariJuslin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Needless to say these folks are far beyond the point of having to take themselves *too* seriously. Finns are not as competition-oriented as Americans, and these guys can add color that suits each verse and agree on harmonies almost in their sleep, so shows like this don't really push any limits. They can just go there and let the music flow.
      On Nightwish shows like the song the Islander performed at Tampere Marko was sitting alone with a non-distorted guitar in a middle of audience of 20000-30000 people and entertained them in relaxed but professional manner. He knows he's good, he doesn't have to stress about things.

    • @JariJuslin
      @JariJuslin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      But the point of ESC is that in a continent often locked into arms race countries compete against each other in a constructive manner, relieve tensions and celebrate European culture while at it. So countries sometimes *do* send people very popular already. It's just looked down by serious musicians, so it's usually pop artists, not highly skilled people like top metal folks who want to attend. But there are exceptions.

    • @JariJuslin
      @JariJuslin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And for several decades Finland was a metal country. Any kids picking up an instrument started by trying to play Iron Maiden, Metallica and so.
      So the people spending years honing their skills with guitars, drums or vocals often ended up playing hard rock or metal. And the music was composed to showcase these skills.
      For example Alexi Laiho of Chrilden of Bodom (RIP) won numerous awards and recognitions for his guitar playing, and he was voted the best metal guitarist in Total Guitar poll.

    The Eurovison Song Contest ESC:
    1. Organized by the EBU the European Broadcasting Union. Thier general label for any type of broadcast, which is aired in more than Nation is "Eurovision", it is shown at the beginning of a broadcast. But the ESC is by far the most sucessfull cross border broadcast. So most non europeans call the ESC just "Eurovision"
    2. Every European Nation can send a song. - original, - published only one year or half a year before. - any branch of music can be send. But the ESC start in the 1950ies as "Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson". Not the singer wins the competion, the writer of the song wins.
    3. How the Nation selects the song its up to them. i.e Sweden and Italy have big national "Battle of the Bands", Germany as some sort of crappy "Jury/public vote" system which changes every year. It my also be the programm director of the TV/Radio station in charge to pick the national song.
    4. Since there are more than 40 Nations in Europe, not every song can be shown in the main competition - The Finals. According to this, there are semi finals to narrow the field of the competitors. BUT 5 Nations a automatically set for the finals - Germany, France, UK, Spain, Italy because they pay most of the bill.
    5. In the finals there is a jury vote and a public vote from every european nation (not only from the Nations which have a song in the Finals). Both votes make a ranking of 10 songs (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,12). All points are added, and the song with the most points wins.
    6. Since it is a long running contest, every nation has its own traditions to celebrate the contest. One normal reation is, that the national TV station makes a nationwide Eurovison show, before and after the Main Show. I think this "northern King" a from the finnish show.
    7. Since the ESC has a big audience it is very intering for lauching a song to an international audience. i.e you are a good songwriter from Greece (small country) but you have no contacts outside Greece. ESC is your chance to play get know by big boys. i.e. Your are a well known and influention swedish songwriter/producer but you have no chance that your song is selected by Sweden. What to do? Offer it a smaller country like Lativa or Estonia.
    8. The rest is politics in voting and the art of TV producers how to make a good show, more commercial think how to produce/place a song....

    "stodgy outside person" cracked me up 😂. But yeah, far too often you meet people who think about metal that way. It is a particular joy when those outside people apprehensively stick a toe in the community and find out to their surprise that the majority of people in there are very likable and come from all walks of live. Watching their expressions of shock and incredulity never gets old :-).

    They are about to do Finnish festivals starting June. Villi is the keyboard player. Mirkka drums, Erki bass guitar, Erkka lead guitar.
    Sonata Arctica is my favourite band.
    The only song I suggest of theirs then you do your journey, White Pearl Black Oceans live.
    That way you get an idea of Tony's song writing.
    No laundry list. Lol

    Also, If you love Seven Bridges Road you should check out an a capella cover of it by Home Free. Stellar stuff, but of course - Not metal! 😀

    For a band that has the 80s vibe and sound allbeit heavier nailed is The Night Flight Orchestra all their stuff is original but it just feels like the 70s/80s. Formed by two members of Soilworks (another great band) as a bit of of a diversion they now have six albums.

    I love these side projects that finnish metal musicians and singers do. These bring down those prejudices what you said. Aside from Northern kings, metal christmas tour is very popular amongst those who dont so much even listen to metal music. There is also collaborations with opera singers, most precious to me is a finnish anthem Finlandia with Jarkko Ahola and famous finnish opera singer Valtteri Torikka. Its not a reaction probably, but I suggest you to check it at least on your own!

    Thanks, you got all the additional info you need in other comments so there's no need for me to write any more about that.
    If you are looking for a female Super-Group doing covers it has to be Exit Eden - (in the order they are standing on stage in the link I'm posting below) Amanda Somerville (Aina, Trillium, Kiske / Somerville, HDK), Anna Brunner (Kissin' Dynamite, Beyond The Black), Marina La Torraca (Synnoveriem, Phantom Elite, Highlight Kenosis, Avantgard) and Clémentine Delauney (Whyzdom, Serenity, Visions Of Atlantis). The song I'm suggesting is a cover of Shontelle's "Impossible", her original was released on TH-cam on 1 April 2010. There is an Official Video released by Napalm in 21 July 2017, but since I got the impression that you rather watch Live performances I dug up one of those. No need to worry, this is also an Official release from Napalm, 17 Nov 2017.
    Exit Eden with "Impossible" (Shontelle cover), Live at HH Metal Dayz th-cam.com/video/hCXDvj9tTmM/w-d-xo.html
    Cheers / B.

      Kept looking on Wikipedia and on the page for Amanda Somerville I found out that the idea behind Exit Eden was exactly the same as for Northern Kings (making it easy for me so this is just Copy-Paste from that source):
      "The band was conceived with the plan "to show the world that almost every classic song can be transformed into a solid Metal-Rock song", a concept similar to Finland's Northern Kings."

    "Yeah but can you sing?" "Yeah, and very well, too, so up yours." I love that XD
    Also, about half the reason I listen to power metal to begin with is 'cause the singing's so good, I don't know what the fuck hypothetical outsider person is talking about man.

    I suppose there are some metal singers who can't sing, just screech or growl, but I never thought of metal singers not being able to sing. Many reactors to Disturb's "The Sound Of Silence" voiced their surprise that David Draiman could sing, and those who already knew that he could, showed surprise at just how good he can sing.

      @@NightwishArena The live version from The Tonight Show has a little bit of auto tune, one maybe two spots, and he was infuriated when he found out. David Draiman hates auto tune, and didn't need it, even though he was sick. David is classically trained, in Opera I believe.

      @@bartonbagnes4605 Ok, thanks. Those damn tv-shows tend to use it to make the singers sound "perfect", and it only sounds worse. Even the best singers are not perfect, but they are so close, that it actually sounds better than perfect. It just gives the notes some vividness and color.
