    Find a place that has a plastic bead blaster for your clutch plates to get the corrosion off with out messing up the balance. I fix airplanes for a living, & that’s what we use for our critical engine parts

      we always blanchard ground flywheels because the repeated heat cycles cause warpage.

      White vinegar or tubaware with a couple 2 liters of Coca-Cola Will lift the rust with no damage to that floater plate.
      Also we have plastic bead blasters at my shop too.
      Work great.
      Imo, clean it all up.
      Get a machinist edge, a feeler have set, and a perfectly flat table (I use surface plates in my lab).
      Check to make sure you don't have more than .001-.0015" gap around your flywheel and also the floater plate.
      You should be good if none of those feeler gages fit under.
      My gut feeling is the corrosion was your issue. Not mechanical.
      That and a loose fuel line, lol

    Clean the clutch plates with steel wool and light oil.
    Do NOT try to clean the actual clutch pads!
    Put it back together, the heat and friction the first time you engage a gear to move will clean the rest. :D

    Edit: Obviously clean the oil off before reassembly :)

      Nick Hannaford exactly, you don't put oil anywhere near something that works on friction... definately clean the flywheel and center steel with brake clean. I might not even use brake clean on the clutch disks, would want to mess with the binding angent. I'd just lightly scuff the clutch disks and wipe them off

    Seeing your clutch plates and discs, it appears like you could just get an orbital sander and sand all of that corrosion off. A wire brush would work for the edges and smaller details. The friction discs appear to be OK and probably need very little work. Could probably sand the contact faces to get them grippy again so they will seat properly with the friction plates. Looks like you got off easy on that! WTG!

    • @rockemsockemyall
      @rockemsockemyall 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mike Borraccia you would be surprised at the amount of manufactures that use zip ties for vaccum lines and other connections as a factory standard. Even showing up in parts diagrams. Maybe not at all to the extent in the lambos case, but i can pretty comfortably say there is zipties used all over that lambo from the factory

    • @lsh3rd
      @lsh3rd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Normally for a used car deduct $5 from the value for every non-factory zip tie. For a Lamborghini, deduct $100 each.

    Just clean the surface of the two plates with sandpaper like deglaze the material of the clutch plates and the edge and impersonate the spinning motion of the engine with it in the flywheel and see if it feels free if so then ideal but if not I’ll just contact the makers of the clutch 👍🏼..... great video as always 👌🏼🇬🇧

      This kind of thing happens to old bike clutches ,which this is similar in principle to, all the time (albeit wet ones). You just separate (or bump) them till they're loose again and then it all works as it should. I'd gamble and put it back in.

      This! Although the clutch doesn’t look pretty, it’s functional enough to get the car going. The rust and heat marks on the flywheel are typical for a used (heat marks) clutch that’s been sitting in a wooden box @ Copart for a year (rust).
      If you put it back together and it still does not work, I would suspect the slave cylinder before anything else.

    • @gijs3474

  • @HellTriX
    @HellTriX 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    +Tararish Nothing wrong with that clutch. A little bit of rush can cause clutches to stick, sometimes you can put them in gear and jump start the vehicle and use the power of the engine while pressing in the clutch to break the clutch free. In this case you pried them apart, just put it back in don't try cleaning it. It's just fine, the corrosion would clean right off with the friction material in the first second of use.

    Soak the metal (not the clutch plates) in cleaning vinegar, it will remove the rust and only the rust and won’t leave any harsh chemical residue that’s what I did to the clutch on my bike

    • @silvergreylion

      Alternatively, you could use some phosphoric acid on the rust. It will react with it, turning it into iron(III)phosphate, which is completely insoluble (and a deep black), preventing rust pretty much ever again.

    Tip: Next time you suspect this could be the issue, put the car into gear, depress the clutch and hit the starter, while holding the brakes. This is usually enough force to free the plates and save you having to disassemble your car. Don't feel bad, been there, done that.
    It's not uncommon for clutch plates to stick together, and the corrosion is also not uncommon since it's got an inspection hole that can allow for moisture to get into the clutch mechanism. It's all minor surface corrosion too. IMO, the plates being stuck together is the sole issue since you said it won't go into gear when it's running. That's because the syncros are unable to stop the gears spinning because the clutch would never disengage. If the corrosion is really bothering you, just wire brush it off.

      I was thinking back to a Subaru I did years ago where I just cleaned it up with a Scotch Brite pad, a ton of PB Blaster, and brake cleaner but that's a clutch that'll only set you back $150 if you mess it up and only takes half an hour to pull the engine back out if the clutch fix didn't work. Something like this I think I'd look for something a bit better. There were some other commentors that mentioned Blanchard, that would likely be a better option for something like this.

    You can definitely go over it lightly with sandpaper, say 400 grit. That will break up the glaze on the floater disk and expose new organics on the disk. I would do that, then reinstall the trans. Start it and I think the clutch will work just fine.

    soak the plate (not the clutches) in a vinegar solution. Should remove most of the rust, then hit it with a couple green scotch pads. Clean with break cleaner.
    or get that clutch company to sponsor your video with a new clutch OR have them show you how to refurb a good clutch.
    the rust will come off the clutch plate surfaces ones it engages a couple times and will burn right off. You could scotch pad the areas between the friction material.

    The clutch is totally fixable. Vinegar soak, rinse well with water. Then soft wire wheel on the metal parts, gentle hand clean on the pucks... just make sure you clean it well and dry it. Keep in mind that if you just put it back and then it take 3-4 months before you get the car working the clutch might rust again.

    I had a clutch disc stuck like that to the flywheel in an old vw bug that had been sitting for 20 years. Once it was separated, it was fine. Put it back in, and run it. It's in your garage now, so it's not like moisture is gonna get back in there. If it sticks again, you are only out your time of yanking it back apart, which surprisingly didn't look that bad. Major props for taking a project like this on. I wrench on cars for work, and would be scared to death of dropping this kind of cash on a car that could potentially be a lawn ornament.

    Tavarish, clutch looks OK. Like others have mentioned this was likely caused from it getting wet and sitting for a while. Hey T! Early Porsche 928s also have a twin-disc clutch with an intermediate plate. A light sanding to take off what appears to be simple surface corrosion from sitting should do it. Shouldn't affect balance at all. But you also need to make sure that the intermediate plate can self-adjust, so make sure to clean up all the sliding surfaces and also on the pressure plate. Just use some scotchbrite or some 220 sandpaper. Earlier you also asked about the Throwout bearing. Looks okay to me. Not directly familiar with that setup, but many will have a high-temp/high-pressure grease to allow the clutch and TO bearing to slide on the splines (without flinging off into the clutch itself.) Don't clean off the grease. Progress looks great.

    So much room for "Activities" Stepbrothers! Wire wheel that clutch! You definitely found the problem. Its common for cars that sit. you can see if the clutch is free by putting the trans in gear while engine is off then spinning the rear wheels or wheel stubs. You can also do it out of the car to see if the trans rotates.

    • @highPSIsled
      @highPSIsled 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      ne2i yup. Probably sat in high humidity for a while while stored, or got wet before it was stored. Maybe something to do with putting out the fire. Clean it up if you want to, but it's not really necessary. I personally wouldn't touch the clutch surfaces, just leave them as is.

    • @ne2i
      @ne2i 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @Tsuter1978
      @Tsuter1978 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ne2i I wouldn’t think it would hurt to hit the metal plates with some high grit sandpaper to clean and smooth the surface back up. Not sure if a wire wheel would take off a bit too much material, but I guess that would give a good surface for the clutch discs to bite.

    • @ne2i
      @ne2i 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It probably needs a proper de-glazing. A sanding disk on the drill would do it. Just hit the really corroded bits with wire. Done this before when the flywheel was in good shape. It looks like he could get away with it here.

    • @ne2i
      @ne2i 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check for trans rotation. The levers where the cables connect can be manipulated to get it into gear on the bench. either spin the axle stubs or the input shaft while in gear to check for free rotation. Whatever is easier for you.

    Hey man when you removed the clutch you should unbolt it in a star pattern evenly. Its possible to break clutch components.
    I would also recommend buying a clutch alignment tool for when you reinstall the clutch, being twin plates its very hard to line one up without one.
    Ive removed a triple plate clutch which had been in water and rusted together, seperated it like such and used scotchbrite on the intermediate plates and put alittle grease on the input shaft, the car still runs today with 960hp.. we didnt replace the clutch because it was in still very new condition only seen a few power skids..
    You could on paper re install that without touching it and it should work :/ Cars ahaha, Love the vids!

It might be cheaper cost effective because its a lesser known brand but looked incredible. It looks like it has enough wear to warrant at least replacing the parts that Spec says need to be replaced. I wouldn't do anything else until it's gone back to the manufacturer to see if they can reuse any of the old parts, but I'd be prepared to replace with new.

    Clutch is very fixable- simply heat seized. The rust just makes it look worse than it is. Yes you can do this at home. Depending on how warped (maybe not warped at all), you can true it at home or can have it turned at a machine shop. Get yourself a straight edge and if its not warped more than 1/16th of an inch either way, you can handle it yourself old school on a granite/glass table and large format sand paper (various grits). As you will be taking off metal on the flat, the balance will not be affected. Make sure the clutch material is sanded rough as well as the heat will have glazed the pads. If you want to chat about it, PM me and i'll be happy to explain it. Best of luck- great project.

    What i would do is wirewheel the metal plates and light sand paper the other plates,. cant hurt at all. That clutch is fine, just needs a little clean up.

    I restore old woodworking tools (and have a challenger 🤪) - try soaking those plates in Evaporust. Stuff is magic and you can get it at Harbor Freight. It runs about $25 a gallon. It’s a biodegradable solution that eats rust and leaves everything else alone.

    It would’ve separated those clutch packs apart if you started it in gear and pushed the clutch in to rev it most likely

    Props for doing it ur self I'm a mechanic myself and in my opinion the car was built by hand you can damn sure take it apart just as easy it's not rocket science... and yeah you should be able to resurface the parts of the clutch

    A couple of options, scotch brite pads on the steel discs will clean them up, but dont get carried away. bead blast the metal plate. Contact SPEC and have them check it out. The last one is the only way to be 100% certain it is good. The other ways would be fine 90% of the time, but as you know, pulling a transmission for a stuck disc sucks. I would venture to say, if you just put it back together it would work fine. The car probably has been sitting (thus the corrosion) and just had stuck discs. This is very common. Putting it back together and running it will clean those discs up in short order.

      I hope he sees this, since it was lightly seized, they probably won't stick once you put the clutch back together. Once the discs start turning they SHOULD be fine. There's always a chance of it screwing up again though.

      Yea, and impregnate all that crap into the pad surface. It needs to be cleaned up with scotch bright first.
