hey! great video, but i'd really appreciate it, as a nonbinary intersex person, if you made one small correction- because these pokemon have mixed sexual traits, regardless of their gender identity, that would actually make them intersex! especially because sexual traits have nothing to do with gender identity. :)
Thank you for noting this! I can't change the voice over after publishing the video, but I'll pin this comment. Thanks to everyone who has reached out with similar notes :)
Pretty much my rants lmao but nicer ig. But yeah. This exactly. Sexual traits and gender identity are TOTALLY different and relate to completely different aspects of gender. For gender identity itd only be possible for pokemon that have some sort of individual identity or sentience, less for the more animalistic ones. Kingdra could be a perfect example of a pokemon switching sexes through evolution. But introducing sexual identification into pokemon would really only lead to the natural conclusion of pokemon that don't naturally change sex getting sex change operations cuz what they physically are doesn't match their gender identity and that's just bleh. I think we're good with boy. Girl, and sexless
Yep!! I was about to comment the same; as someone who's gender is non binary, I wanted to second that "gender" in the pokemon games really refers to "sex". and sex based traits don't change when you change your identity, unless you deliberately decide to seek those changes. Theoretically (in a mystery dungeon universe where pokemon could talk) a nidoqueen could go by they them, or even he him pronouns and remain visually identical to any other nidoqueen. It's the same as in real life, you've gotta respect their identity regardless of ones presentation. That said, your designs are very creative and i'd love to see what you make in the future!!
Yeah I was going mention this but glad people already have!
That’s what I was about to say lol. Sex≠gender
The phrase “being non binary will not save you” is so fucking funny to me.

Frillish really said "Gay wrongs!" 😂
Nonbinary Wrongs.
Evil gay rights really be like that
kinda reminds me of when WolfeyVGC accidently made Amoonguss a trans icon and then he tweeted out "hey so if Amoonguss is trans rights then does that make Brute Bonnet trans wrongs?"
If there are gay right where are the gay lefts and gat centers?
@@jma0645Uhhhhhhh.... I think the gay lefts have not left the closets yet and the gay centers are still centre stage with the rest of the threatre kids 👀
They must include a clownfish pokemon that cam change sex upon evolution. Like it starts out as male initially but upon evolving it becomes female. Clownfish dimorphism would be great inspiration
That would be neat! I remember there used to be a glitch where sometimes Azuril's sex would change when it evolved so it would be cool if the Pokémon company included that as an intentional gimmick.
@@diacinthusGlitch? Don't know what you are talking about. Marill was just trans
@@tpfoxCastro Imagine if someone brang their transmasc Azumarill to every game including SV.
@@diacinthusI thought your Frillish Pokedex entry was funny.
@@diacinthusI love that so much. I remember playing a White 2 nuzlocke noticed that my Marill was suddenly male, very happy for him. I knew of the glitch before but I just wasn’t expecting it.
note: Intersex is not apart of the nonbinary umbrella since intersex is a sex and non binary is a gender
this is true! while TECHNICALLY being intersex is considered a genetic disorder, it is a third biological sex! while the two can be intertwined by a lot of intersex people identifying as nonbinary, but not all intersex people do!
sorry for the lil ramble i just love when people know this stuff
Huh. I actually didn't know this. Thanks mate!
@@tobyleking i wish nonbinary was called intergender instead so that the difference was clearer
nonbinary is also just a very vague term in general
Wait sex and gender are different? Huh
@@tobylekingthis! I have a friend who was born intersex, but is actively trying to be a full girl (surgery and all). I have no idea where the OP came up with 6 genders/sexes. Its Male, Female, and Intersex (have both/no parts).
Sorry about the transphobic weirdos in the comments, royal. I love these designs! I like the idea of a gender neutral Meowstic being more of a physical attacker.
Thank you so much! Comments like yours make sifting through the hateful ones worth it. Our joy is so much more powerful than their anger ❤️
I feel like there’s a way to go even harder on that design. There’s a certain subtrope of monks as psionic or straight up capable of magic (see: Doctor Strange). There is absolutely room to take the references to gender-affirming clothes from the Nido-line from earlier and convert it into monk wrappings.
Red Mage Meowstic with Psycho Cut as well as buffing/debuffing moves is my type of Meowstic
I know that I, as an enby, would definitely shank a bitch. 😂
its kind of surprising how little pokemon plays with sex considering how weird it can get in nature
To be fair, it can get weird in Pokémon too.
I think they did more of it early on but then as became more globally popular they became aware of the sensitivities in other parts of the world. Since the United States is finally starting to catch up with society, we may actually start seeing more of that lore coming over. Japan has had at least three genders for a long time, despite for an influences trying to make them stop for the last 200 years or so. (Which is right around the time it became uncool to be anything other than a very specific male or a very specific female doing a very specific role in the Western world, Go back 300 years and they are way less stuffy about it)
pretty sure because it's a kids game, and animal sex usually isn't a topic kids want to learn about while playing video games
The churn out for pokemon is too quick to spend much time the designs.
Pyroar had more time in the oven I think
@michaelno1865 as a kid I would watch a shit ton of animal documentaries. Guess what we learn about in those? Didn't traumatise me or anything. If pokemon were to reflect more of that aspect of nature it'd only be a neat addition. Highly doubt it would cause any harm.
Look up bilateral gynandromorphism- half looks male, half looks female. That might work better for some intersex designs.
OOOO! Some of these look NEAT! That's kind of what I was going for with my second attempt at designing Frillish. A lot of the examples I'm finding online are of birds so maybe this would work for an Unpheasant :3
i would LOVE to see this with an Unfezant...
Excuse me, if I draw fanart of these Pokémon where should I send it to you? Do you have a Twitter or anything?
So basically androgynous
@@diacinthus you'll also see it in butterflies, though i dont think we have any butterfly pokemon with *major* dimorphism...
Missed the opportunity to make the nidoroyal line yellow, which would make the trio the magenta, yellow and cyan color spectrum. I think it'd be neat because they're a form of primary color, contrast well with each other, and could in a more abstract way allude to gender being a spectrum. Definitely clever to make the chest plating a binder and gaff though.
OOOO! I hadn't thought of that but I love it!
Ooh, I’ve considered the idea of a yellow jellicent before, but never thought of it that way!
The reason for mine is actually because I have this little pet project of deciding what Undertale and Deltarune characters would be as Pokémon. Jellicent is great for Onion-san, but I just don’t feel comfortable making an assumption by assigning them one of the sexes! So I considered the idea of a yellow jellicent that has more neutral or mixed traits.
Also about the professor: I'm sure they would have been *thrilled* to get a question like that. Put yourself in a teachers shoes. You've been studying for years to teach this passion of yours. You put your heart and soul into it. Whether or not it's summer vacation, I'd be thrilled if a student asked "hey I'm working on a personal art project thats xyz, i was wondering, do you have any information about nonbinary aristocracy?" Worst case scenario, you don't get an answer. But definitely don't think of urself as a hassle! It's better to try than not at all. Also super cool that u have a professor like that...I'm sure she's quite passionate about it! ❤
I remember I made a non-binary eevee once, and the end of its tail was just a straight line instead of spiky or whatever (I’m really bad at explaining things)
:3
How cute! I think I follow the idea.
So instead of fur bristles or a dollop pattern, your nonbinary concept for an Eevee is a cone? Neato!
I made one once that had more of a flower petal thing going on where it was round and pointed at the end :3
It was originally gonna be a sons of sorts but I never did really use them
Your explanation made perfect sense to me!
11:24 I love the first part of this one’s Pokédex entry “being non-binary will not save you” it’s just oddly funny to me
Unsurprisingly, I enjoyed this video a lot. All these designs are great! The Meowstic is my favorite. Clever decision making it utilize the attack stat to distinguish it from the other two more.
I have a suggestion for Nidoran Neutral's design. I think green could also work for the Nidoran N evolution line. Green is a popular choice for gender neutral baby clothing, green being a color less associated with either boys or girls. Green is also good because it is a cool color, just like the blue and purple of the existing Nidorans. Shiny Nidoqueen is also green, so it's not entirely unique. But most people dislike that shiny anyway.
On a side note. There is a scrapped back sprite for Pokémon Red and Green, the first released Pokémon games, that strongly resembles Nidoran. The scrapped sprite being Nidoran Neutral is now my headcanon.
Heyyyy! :) I love that idea and that headcanon, and it's also my headcanon now.
My big fear was that you would make the non binary pokemon objectively better then the binary ones. I think you did a wonderful job avoiding this trap. And on top of that, i did a learn! As a cis male who believes in acceptance and compassion, Thank you so much for this video.
I can see why it would be tempting to make the non binary Pokemon better than the other genders because if we use real life logic they would be very rare so it be rewarding if they were stronger than the binary genders.

Something I think would have been a fun design idea for meowstic, is to take inspiration from chimera cats.
OOOO THIS IS SUCH A GOOD IDEA!!!
You mean calicos? That's weird the people have started calling calico's The term for multiple embryonic tissues combining into a single organism, but I guess I can see the very super special resemblance. Quick biology lesson, all cats have clusters of cells throughout their body that are of different dominant genes, because all mammals do this including humans. You can just actually see it in a calico because of the way the pigmentation genes work via a mendelian and dominant recessive system. They aren't any different internally, you just can see it externally. The same goes for the rare male calicos that actually are chimeras, you can see that they are chimera, but there are just as many males of every color out there that are also chimeras. Anyhow it's kind of a fun thing to be aware of. A non chimeric male calico would simply be orange or black but not both. There's also this weird thing that you can get where it's an XXY animal but I think I've said enough.
@@darcieclements4880 No, they didn't mean calico. A chimera cat is an entirely different thing.
@@darcieclements4880 No, the reason those specific calicos have been called chimeras is because they are. Absorbed a littermate in the womb and ended up with some of their features at birth. Some calico chimeras have perfect splits of their colors somewhere on their body and heterochromia, which is how people come to the conclusion their cat may be a chimera and get them tested.
The frillish entry caught me off guard LMAO.
I really liked the meowstic design! :3
i fully expected nidorin to be named nidorinx lmfao
Nidorine would also totally work. And also sidesteps the whole linguistic problem with using Latinx in basically the exact same way some actual Spanish speakers do
@@lancesmith8298 i hate latinx (im latino) why? because it cant be pronounced in Spanish since we cant pronounce two letters at the same time only if they are ll, ch or rr but they are exceptions, but using a letter as a vocal is impossible
In short words it would be pronounced like latin-x
11:15 that's the alola dex for you, sick designs also
Alola dex my beloved....
When I was a kid, my silly brain thought of the Nidoran X line as a "what if Nidoran female and male bred?"
I even made up Nidorine and Nidonarch as the names for the evolutions, but never went as far as making a design or moveset or anything lol
Nidoking and Nidoqueen can breed in the wild as opposed to trained Nidoqueens which can't, but since Pokemon fusions aren't created through breeding, the end result will always be a male or female Nidoran. Pokemon Infinite Fusion does have a gender neutral fusion of both though.
@@gem_b7798 Neat! One day I'll play that fangame
That was a great video. Idk how it got recomended to me... A brazilian that wasnt watching art/pokemon videos in a while... BUT IM GLAD I FOUND THIS PIECE OF ART
hello fellow brazilian
I always liked that the male Nidoran was a color that society considered more feminine.
Honestly, I'm surprised this idea hasn't been done before. The designs were cute!!! New sub!!!
Thank you!! 😊
One non-binary Pokémon I honestly think would work is a third member to the Lati twins. Most legendaries are already all genderless, and since the Lati twins are the only legendary duo like that, where their main difference is gender, I think a non-binary member would be really cool!
Ooo good point! Since both Latis turn purple in their megas I always thought it would have been cool if they had the same mega :3c
I didn’t think I’d love this idea but damn these designs have sold me. I know the Internet has probably already done this but I’d love to see a non binary kirlia evolution, of course one that’s not a robot from the future lol
Thank you so much!
Consider: gardevoir is the nb evo, and adding a fem one that evolves via dusk stone.
@BookWyrmOnAString hell yea nb skirt rights >:D
Maybe the fem evo would be a much softer design than the other two, with a fuller ballgown skirt and puffs on its shoulders like Gallade's weird diaper. And then she ends up being the tank/healer, because I imagine shes got SOMETHING under that skirt that makes her so bulky
Unbelievably based. Nonbinary/Gender nonconforming character design is really interesting and inspiring to me, but I have never seriously thought about how it could be applied to Pokémon design (though I often think about nb player character options)! This video makes me happy, so thank you for that 🙂
I'm so glad to have spread some joy! :D
I always thaught that female jellicent just has a really funny open happy face
Same, it never occurred to me that the smile was actually it’s lips
Oh and just a wee addition I would like to add
Can we remove heteronormative from the moveset have a personality value determine if attract works instead of gender
Then it could work on the genderless Pokémon too! Cryogonal was ahead of their time!
Maybe its nature based? Or hidden power type? Maybe it works if the target's hp type is weak to the user's hp type? Or it just always works lol
Ngl but the red on the neutral Nidoran line reminds a lot of Baragon, a main inspiration for the Nidoran lines! Also I kinda wish you made the Nidoroyal a bit chunkier like the nidoking and nidoqueen.
Ooo I’ve never seen Baragon before - what a funky fella!
The meowstic makes me really happy!! I had a Pokémon OC when I was younger who was a nobinary Espurr! They carried an everstone because they didn’t want to evolve and be forced into a sex-based appearance. That’s my anecdote :) these designs are all super cool!
Awww I love that!
Missed oportunity to call Nidoroyal "Nidoqueer"
While phonetically sounding better, and fitting with them being queer, it doesn't fit the king/queen naming scheme.

What's "/unr"? The only word that's coming to mind is unreal and that can't be right
@@dizzypro4974 unrelated actually.
I know you might get backlash for this video from sweaty pokemon "fans", but I just want to say this video means a lot (especially with how informative it is) to a nonbinary person like me. I hope you have an amazing day!
1 note I wanna give btw, a majority of non-animal species dont have genders or sexes in the first place, and when they do its extremely rare for there to only be two (and for those traits to be split across multiple organisms). Take plants for example; your average pepper or tomato flower is Bisexual (in the most literal way, of having two sexes), and produces both "male" and "female" sex cells, a lot of grass type pokemon (expecially fungal ones, some common irl mushrooms have over 17,000 sexes) should either be genderless or have both genders if transphobes want to get into the gritty details of "Muh chromosomes"
As a non-binary person who LOVES Pokémon… thank you.
The frillish & jellicent are the trans colors omg
Also I normally hate that line but your designs are so much more charming and I would probably use them on a team
Aww thank you!
I like this video a lot!! I'd never considered a third gender variant of the dimorphic Pokemon (trimorphic now?)
imagine a fungus based pokemon whose gimmick is having a variety of sex variants (certain fungi have hundreds of sexes)
Spinda?
@@EnbyOfTheBorealValley spinda have phenotype variation regardless of sex
@@summerfishy oh sorry, was replying to the comment that talked about something with thousands of variations
0:01 Oh my goodness that female pheasant is actually so pretty! I see males around here sometimes, but I don't ever remember seeing females. I assumed they were just brown but that is so pretty, it almost looks like a dove!
As someone who dislikes how Pokémon conflates the terms gender and sex, I think technically "intersex" would be more appropriate. Although it could be argued they,as fantasy creatures, do indeed have more than 2 sexes. Also, being nitpicky with the franchise that uses "evolution" for what clearly is a metamorphosis is a bit ironic, I do have to admit
Let's be honest, they use "gender" because they aren't allowed to say "sex"
I mean unless you're only talking about the creatures themselves, gender doesn't matter since its an expression of presentation to others. In people, its a choice how a person wants to be perceived. The majority of pokemon assuming, have intelligence on par with real world animals, its safe to say they aren't choosing to present how we see them in-game. And considering this franchise is almost 30 and still has very simple world-building, fan works like this are the only option to get more thought out stuff on these guys.
I liked the idea of nidoran neutral being a color that is mistakable for both of its binary counterparts
As a nonbinary pokemon fan, this video made me so so happy. 🎉
Could you make single-gender pokemon their opposite gender?
Honestly had the idea independently, but in reverse. The Pawniard line is actually a 50/50 split, so Kingambit rubs me the wrong way for both gender reasons and also being a lazy name compared to the others. Not naming it after a knife adjective is fine, but that’s just two chess words next to each other.
And so, Empprise (Empress, en prise [a chess term for a piece open for attack, from the French “for free”], and surprise [weakly]) was born.
I caught a genderless Heatran as a kid in either Pearl or SS! Though looking through the gender ratios online, it must have been a glitch because apparently the ratio is 50/50 for male and female. Still pretty cool to think that I might have the only genderless Heatran somewhere though.
10:00 I NEED to hear your professor's take on this video, omg
THATS WHAT I'M SAYING!!
Omg these slap. Definite sub, and I like how there was the intention of going beyond just “idk somewhere in between” for some traits
I’m a huge Pokémon fan and somehow despite making my team members trans, I never thought about there being a ungendered variant for the Pokémon that are split into too.. I love this!!
As a non binary person, I love to not be the only one who feels like pokemon is too binary sometimes💙
Not to be rude but maybe they keep it binary because little kids won’t understand it and because it’s a kids game
I absolutely love this video. Amazing script, using real science to back decisions, inter gender variants, whole new designs like Meowstic and Nidorin (loved the whole direction change into red btw) to create they're own take on androgy, or combining genders to create androgy with Frilish, and sources!
This is honestly a top tier video that deserves infinite views, please keep up the high quality work.
Thank you so much!
unsure if anyone else mentioned this, but in the SV DLC theres a unisex bathroom! thought it was kind of neat
This is such a cool idea! I would totally like to see a sequel to this video.
i automatically love you for making this video as a nonbinary person who loves pokemon

Lovely video, my only critique would maybe be that the poses of the pokemon could be a bit more dynamic, but still really cool.
Thanks for the feedback! This is definitely something I want to work on with my art.
The fucking BOJACK jumpscare 😭 exactly what i hear whenever the term "back in the 90's" comes up lmao
Also, what if male chinchou became really small after evolving and worked like tatsugiri but for female chinchou. Anglerfish have pretty extreme sexual dimorphism and I'd like to see that in the games. (or maybe all male chinchou and lanturn are actually trans?)
This is a great idea! I think for part 2 you should do indeedee
As a kid I always thought Hitmonchan was supposed to be the female version of Hitmonlee because of its skirt looking body. I wasted so much time resetting for a female because as a dumb kid, I didn't want a "male pokemon looking so girly"
This is such a gcooo idea!! And so well executed!!! I never noticed just how different the two genders of Nidoran were physically until u pointed them out!

as a masc-leaning nonbinary pokémon lover , i adore this video !! your designs perfectly hit a middle ground between the male and female forms , and i appreciate how you explained different types on nonbinary identities . happy pride
I knew I needed this but I didn't knew how, thank you
I wish they didn’t correct the gender bug on the Azurill line. For those who don’t know, Azurill and Marill have different gender ratios. With Azurill being more female than male while Marill being even. Until Gen 6, there was a 1/4 chance that your female Azurill will become male upon evolving. I thought it was a nice quirk to it and gave it character cuz in real life we have examples of animals that do that which I thought they were referencing. Oh well.
This actually reminded me of an idea that I wanted to do with my fangame; a mushroom Pokémon whose gender is a spinda situation. There's obviously no difference in design, I just think it'd be fun to have an accurate mushroom Pokémon, as mushrooms have thousands of sexes, so it'd be fun to see collectors struggle to try to find a mushroom of every sex
I'd love to see that!
I really love your solution for Meowstic neutrals colors! Using Espurrs coloring was a good call

I'm crying, I didn't know Pokémon responded to that letter, that's so sweet 😭💗
oh no but this is cool! I never knew about the genderless paradox mon, thats fascinating!
I love that you put effort in to have some historical accuracy, too, since thats the perfect well-ackshually to well-ackshually-sayers
I'd love to see some more designs based on unusual sexes and genders in nature. Maybe im wrong, but highlighting the chatoic nature of reproduction across the animal kingdom seems like a good way to highlight how dumb binary thinking can be
My absolute favourite example is the white-throated sparrow; they have four actual biological sexes; males and females of white and tan stripe. The members of the species can only viably breed with birds of the opposite sex AND opposite stripe, and of course produce babies of all four varieties as a result.
Maybe they could be flying/steel and steel/flying, with the steel-first ones being more defensive and the flying-first being faster attackers, but the gender-pairs of each type would be in different egg groups (flying and mineral). They could then have egg moves and hidden-abilities only obtainable through breeding with their own species, maybe a singing themed swordsdance-like move. Maybe the hidden move is a plus-minus type thing, though they may need to be flying/steel and flying/ground to make that more interesting competitively.
Beyond that there's loads of fun fish to explore; there's the Sepiina with the femme-presenting males (basicaly a further gender split in the male pokemon where their swap phys/special defense), or of course clownfish (where maybe you need to have two of the same sex in your party to evolve one, having it swap sex in the process)
Love your silly Pokédex voice
So cool!!!!!! How have I been enby for years and never thought about this angle?! Great work, I'd love a nidoroyal 8D
I love your Frillish line so much. I wish they were part of the games!
You had my curiosity, but now you have my attention
I really like that you gave them some unique features to give them their own look rather than finding a perfect in-between of the 2 binary ones. Really cozy video :)
gotta catch THEM all
An all female lizard Pokémon line that can still breed with each other like irl Mexican whiptail lizards would be incredible
