  • After so many requests to head down to Mad O'Rourke's Pie Factory in Tipton, I decided to head down there and try one of their famous pies. Although, I didn't decide to go with the challenge on this occasion I may return in the future!

This used to be my local for a couple of years in the 90’s. The cow pie was great as was the festive Rudolph pie (contained pigs in blankets) with antlers coming out of it.

Hi Gary. Great video again. I live about 10 minutes from the pie factory. It used to be owned by an eccentric Irish man called Collum O'Rouke. He built up a chain of pubs all over the west midlands and surrounding areas. His first pub was the little pack horse in Bewdley. All the pubs were very quirky and themed. There was the sausage factory, upton muggery, the dry Dock (with a real narrow boat for a bar), the henhouse and many others. The first opened in the late 80's and he sold the chain about 15 to 20 years ago to a pub chain who ruined business. The pie factory is the only one to have survived in its original form. The pub was originally called the Dowty Arms. There used to be boxing matches held upstairs and a claim to fame is that Frank Skinner performed there before he was famous. In the old days, the Dan Pie was much larger. You had whole potatoes, whole carrots, and a mountain of meat. I once had at the pack horse a huge dan pie followed by a large steamed treacle pudding with lashings of hot custard. The pudding was big enough for a family! It was a real belly buster of a meal. I'm really glad you liked your experience, keep up the good work!

I've been to The Pie Factory a few times as I'm from the Black Country, and I've never had a bad meal from there. You should try the Mix Grill. It comes out on a shovel 😂. I think what you tried was very basic from The Pie Factory. The lamb and mint pie is exceptional and the Andy Murray curry Pie is to die for. They do their own ales (called Sledgehammer) as well. It's a brilliant place to eat. Also, there's a challenge pie called the Desperate Dan cow pie. That brings me on to battered chips. Battered chips are a staple in the Black Country. You'll find them more often than not at most chip shops. They are 100% better than regular chips, in my opinion. I'm glad you liked your visit and keep uo the good work 😊👍🏻.

If you were ever wanted to begin to work for the Roux brothers you had to demonstrate you could cook a fried or poach egg before you were even allowed next to the pot wash. As it should be if you strive for excellence

The actual story behind the Roux story was , it’s not just if you could cook an egg , they wanted too know how much care and attention you put into the preparation and cooking of it , the reason being if you put a lot of effort into making it perfect then you would be the same with all penetration and cooking .

Great review as always. Interesting place for a visit, and I would if it wasn't so far. As others say, it isn't really a pie if not encased, but then again you wouldn't get the the lashings of very tasty looking gravy without the pie having a very soggy bottom, so swings and roundabouts I suppose.....looks like you could have done with a spoon mister, but didn't take you long to dip a chip.....just as I would have done!

I make my own pies, short crust bases and a flakey top, but, the fillings of course are most important! I have to bake in bulk with these. Deep pies that are filled, no half measures. Chicken and vegetable curried pies, Steak pies, ham and potato pies. All have their own gravies. The gravy truly is key! I make all the filling the day before so they marinate in the fridge overnight. The steak ones as the most popular as I make a thick red wine, herb, peppery gravy that has to be a good thick gravy. 👍👍👍👍👍👍😀

It's particularly impressive that you managed to capture the audio despite the extremely challenging background noise. Some great camera shots in this one too.
I'm fascinated to try battered chips, though I remain unconvinced by a pie with only the top made of pastry.
My only recommendation is that Tipton is very proudly part of the Black Country, with pies like this being part of the local heritage. It's totally forgivable as you're not a local, but introducing it as 'just outside Birmingham' misses chance to highlight the Black Country and its proud towns such as Dudley. There's a great museum nearby called the Black Country Living museum which is worth a visit.
Keep it up Gary and Cameraman!

You have no idea how disappointed I am that that "pie" wasn't fully enclosed in pastry....at a pie specialist of all places.
You're absolutely correct, not a proper pie at all.

Another great review, thank you for sharing.
I think a pie should be fully encased if they are trying to say it’s a classic pie. Like, how could they ship it as a pie with no bottom?
There are exceptions of course like shepherds, cottage and even fish pie but as they are presenting themselves as a pie shop I would expect it to me fully encased. It looks yum though so I would happily eat it. Battered chips sounds amazing but one of those cases of just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. It might ruin good old fashioned chips for me!

Gary, another brilliant review. You are really smashing you tube with your reviews. Well deserved too. There is something quite novel about your particular style, i can't quite put my finger on it yet but love them anyway. The pie looked delicious, and the chips too. Alas as a person who bakes pies from scratch, i have to say, a pie is not a pie unless it has a bottom and a top. Having said that, it did look delicious so can't fault it.

Another great review. Chips in brown gravy is one of my favorite lunch meals. In Germany, most cafeterias will have a brown (mushroom) gravy available to top meat dishes, but I usually just ordered chips topped with gravy. So good, filling and cheap. And yes, overdone egg is one my pet peeves; I want that runny yolk.

That looks a fun venue with a good atmosphere. I don't like black pudding in any form but that sounded like a good mix if you do. I understand those pies with only a top crust to be called 'pot pies'. For me though, any proper pie needs to fully enclose the meat in pastry. I'd prefer thicker gravy too, for sure. But those chips did look really good! I'm not likely to be passing by 'Mad O'Rourke's', but on the off-chance I do, I'd certainly pay a visit. I think I agree with your 8 out of 10 score!

    • @GaryEats

Hi Gary, I went to Mad O'Rourkes about 30 years ago and had the Desperate Dan Cow Pie. I could really eat in those days. I had already had a couple of ham salad rolls in pubs on the way but finished the pie (horns and all). Later on back in Brum I went for a curry. I must admit I did struggle with the ruby😊 The pie was good value, apart from the meat there were big chunks of potato and other veg and it was hotter than the sun temperature wise. Really enjoyed it though. No room for any chips so I cannot comment on those. Keep up the good work Gary.

Black pudding & egg, from your description and the look of the egg I would guess that they are prepared in bulk and kept warm like hotel/canteen breakfast buffet food. The batter chips look like a great idea, the deep fried mars bar of Birmingham lol

It's clear that the steak in the gravy has been cooked for a long time as can be seen by the meat breaking up, looks like it was slow-cooked separately and then placed in a bowl and topped with pastry.
I have had battered chips a few times and I quite like them being a fan of batter, it works well for that extra crunch.
