Hi Gary. Great video again. I live about 10 minutes from the pie factory. It used to be owned by an eccentric Irish man called Collum O'Rouke. He built up a chain of pubs all over the west midlands and surrounding areas. His first pub was the little pack horse in Bewdley. All the pubs were very quirky and themed. There was the sausage factory, upton muggery, the dry Dock (with a real narrow boat for a bar), the henhouse and many others. The first opened in the late 80's and he sold the chain about 15 to 20 years ago to a pub chain who ruined business. The pie factory is the only one to have survived in its original form. The pub was originally called the Dowty Arms. There used to be boxing matches held upstairs and a claim to fame is that Frank Skinner performed there before he was famous. In the old days, the Dan Pie was much larger. You had whole potatoes, whole carrots, and a mountain of meat. I once had at the pack horse a huge dan pie followed by a large steamed treacle pudding with lashings of hot custard. The pudding was big enough for a family! It was a real belly buster of a meal. I'm really glad you liked your experience, keep up the good work!

This used to be my local for a couple of years in the 90’s. The cow pie was great as was the festive Rudolph pie (contained pigs in blankets) with antlers coming out of it.

I've been to The Pie Factory a few times as I'm from the Black Country, and I've never had a bad meal from there. You should try the Mix Grill. It comes out on a shovel 😂. I think what you tried was very basic from The Pie Factory. The lamb and mint pie is exceptional and the Andy Murray curry Pie is to die for. They do their own ales (called Sledgehammer) as well. It's a brilliant place to eat. Also, there's a challenge pie called the Desperate Dan cow pie. That brings me on to battered chips. Battered chips are a staple in the Black Country. You'll find them more often than not at most chip shops. They are 100% better than regular chips, in my opinion. I'm glad you liked your visit and keep uo the good work 😊👍🏻.

Strewth, what a terrific Beef Pot Pie. Melt-in-the-mouth meat, marvellous gravy and a crispy puff pastry hat. Battered chips elevate that side to a new level. Agree that a runny egg yolk would have completed the ‘kibbeh balls’ styled black pudding. Another great review Gazza.

I agree about your comment on the starter. It's particularly impressive that you managed to capture the audio despite the extremely challenging background noise. Some great camera shots in this one too.
I'm fascinated to try battered chips, though I remain unconvinced by a pie with only the top made of pastry.
My only recommendation is that Tipton is very proudly part of the Black Country, with pies like this being part of the local heritage. It's totally forgivable as you're not a local, but introducing it as 'just outside Birmingham' misses chance to highlight the Black Country and its proud towns such as Dudley. There's a great museum nearby called the Black Country Living museum which is worth a visit.
Keep it up Gary and Cameraman!

@@swinderby No, absolutely not. Booker don’t just do pre-prepared meals - in fact, the majority of their Catering sales are the base ingredients. Booker provide a good range of fresh produce which I currently use in my business - especially the fresh meat & fresh vegetables.
I think the only frozen produce I delivered to the Pie Factory was ice-cream.

Good stuff Gary. Really like the look of the place. I have to agree with some of the others in the comments that a pie is something fully encased in the pastry, not just a dish with it on top.

Great review Gary, been there a few times over the years and find them to be pretty reliable for good food. Battered chips have become a standard thing around the black country area especially in chip shops. More reason for you to visit Wolverhampton now with your love of the battered chip. 😁

Gary, another brilliant review. You are really smashing you tube with your reviews. Well deserved too. There is something quite novel about your particular style, i can't quite put my finger on it yet but love them anyway. The pie looked delicious, and the chips too. Alas as a person who bakes pies from scratch, i have to say, a pie is not a pie unless it has a bottom and a top. Having said that, it did look delicious so can't fault it.

    Hi Gary
The pastry reminded me a bit of the old Fray Bentos “pies” in a tin.
Your “pie” had a decent filling unlike a Fray Bentos offering which just had a large helping of thin air complemented by a minuscule amount of some gravy related slop in the bottom.
Those chips looked epic and I’m going for try and recreate them at home😉

I make my own pies, short crust bases and a flakey top, but, the fillings of course are most important! I have to bake in bulk with these. Deep pies that are filled, no half measures. Chicken and vegetable curried pies, Steak pies, ham and potato pies. All have their own gravies. The gravy truly is key! I make all the filling the day before so they marinate in the fridge overnight. The steak ones as the most popular as I make a thick red wine, herb, peppery gravy that has to be a good thick gravy. 👍👍👍👍👍👍😀

Just live around the corner from the Pie Factory. Always tempting to pop in. They also do take away pies, cooked or frozen. You can take away 2 pint beer cartons from the taps too. Like a nice pint of lump hammer with my pie or wheat beer. My favourites are posh and Becks or wham bam minted lamb. Sunday carvery always sells out unless you get there early enough. Good to see a local get reviewed and enjoyed. On the pie or not argument, either way it's a nice balance of filling and pastry. Received a fair bit of hate in the comments but, they're tasty pies 😋

Haven't been to the Pie Factory in 25 years, used to have some great live Irish music. Cow Pie and a pint (or several) of Lumphammer. Used to be a small chain, my nearest were the Dry Dock in Netherton, the Tumbling Sailor in Kidderminster, and the Pack Horse in Bewdley. All very quirky. Happy memories.

Hi Gary, I went to Mad O'Rourkes about 30 years ago and had the Desperate Dan Cow Pie. I could really eat in those days. I had already had a couple of ham salad rolls in pubs on the way but finished the pie (horns and all). Later on back in Brum I went for a curry. I must admit I did struggle with the ruby😊 The pie was good value, apart from the meat there were big chunks of potato and other veg and it was hotter than the sun temperature wise. Really enjoyed it though. No room for any chips so I cannot comment on those. Keep up the good work Gary.
