    Lost, driving through the middle of nowhere
    Sees object in the distance, drives closer, tanks! Signs of civilization?
    BANG
    Tire shot out, steers into a rock, everything goes black.
    Wakes, is dark, being dragged towards fire
    "Hmm, wonder how long it'll take this one to charcoal?"

    I loved this episode! These longer ones are a real treat. There's something immersive about them, like a part of me is really there.

    Things I noticed in this video: The fact that it looked like something had tried to dig out of the kennel coop (good thing you brought that chicken wire!), the cool 3D shadows from the kennel coop while you were working, pants hanging off the front of the truck, kitty plays nice with the chickens, the chickens just want to be with you and love you, dirt baths under the tanks, the desperate need for a generator (or more solar panels. IDK which is more expensive), fragrant fires, raspy squealing, trouble puffs, never seen a cat eat eggs like that before, WD 40 is good for almost everything, your building of raised beds prompted my 9 year old daughter to ask if you were going to do aquaponics tanks, nifty cover drain, beautiful roiling clouds through your entry hatch during the time lapse, ingenious raised bed design (i'm a horticulturist by genes and training and I love it), corrugated pipe might work in place of the half buckets to reduce the amount of soil, meteoric water

    I think this is my favorite series on TH-cam right now. It's fun to watch, and it reminds me of my days as a young kid, going down the street to the cement washout past the road closed sign and building rudimentary structures with the scraps there and whatever nails my friends and I could find in the area (lots of construction). Of course, we never built anything a tenth this smart. If you had to, I think you could be 100% self sustaining in this place.

    i suggest you invest in a smaller scale wind turbine and set it up on the top of the hill you have near the base since you haven't been getting much sun and you have a lot of wind there. Also are you doing an aquaponics system to help with some of the water waste, yes it can be quite costly to start and it needs stable power, but on mars you would most likely be using this as it can use up to 90% less water than a tradition farming setup with the bonus of fish or other water creatures, the power issue can be remedied by some wind and solar upgrades, yes this will cost alot and you might not be able to afford it, but i'd bet that if you had a way for fans to donate some would donate for a project fund, lets say a fund for an aquaponics system, including power setup materials, then have the cost of it there like a go fund me, i would love to see how you would handle that, some other tips are, a water collection system for when it precipitates no matter what it is. Hope you see this and take some suggestions, even without the aquaponics i would suggest a wind turbine for extra power! - Your fan, me. Proper fasteners is the proper solution. He was using toy grade hardware, unfortunately. Should always stick to grade 8 for important fastenings - especially an access hatch that will need to be opened several times a year. But, hey - hes doing it... more than most can say.

    • @DavidChadwell
      @DavidChadwell 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@jong2359 I think he chose correctly with stainless steel considering this is a greenhouse, and humidity will be very high(plus dirty water running directly into the bolt, as this is a drainage area. Grade 8 fasteners can rust prematurely in an environment like this, as the finish on the threads is damaged during installation. Even very high quality stainless steel fasteners used in aerospace have galling issues if they aren't lubricated, it's just one of the properties of most alloys of stainless steel. If this hatch is meant to be serviceable, meaning opened often, the threads should be lubricated with something longer lasting than WD-40, like a grease containing ptfe(teflon), specifically Jet-Lube 50350, speaking from experience. Amazing stuff.

    • @jong2359
      @jong2359 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DavidChadwell It is possible you are right, although I have successfully taken grade 8's out of a 50 year old Mustang fender that lived in the midwest it's whole life. The hardness/density of the steel can be more important than the resistance to rust. The stainless he was using was clearly not quality hardware - being so ductile, but it was what he had. I am definitely not disputing the need for some kind of lubricant for stainless, although I somehow doubt any kind of lubricant is compatible with water systems.

    • @DavidChadwell
      @DavidChadwell 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jong2359 The low grade stainless steel bolts you can buy at your local hardware store are almost always 18-8 stainless, which is very weak, and ductile relative to a grade 8 bolt, yes. Like everything in life, there are compromises with fasteners too. I would personally take the corrosion resistance over the strength in many applications, and there are definitely greases for water systems. Every mixing valve faucet (like a shower or kitchen sink) in your house has a valve with greased o-rings exposed to the water.

      Please don't mix aluminium and stainless, nickel based anti-seize for stainless if you insist on anti-seize. But any lubrication will do, I prefer PTFE paste or vaseline, WD-40 works just fine as well.

    Hey Cody,
    This project/experiment/adventure/excuse to tinker/prep/practice camp of yours is awesome. You are truly blessed to have the means as well as the will and gumption to do all of this.
    Makes me wish I was your buddy and we could get together and just build and tinker all day long:) seriously, I have some great ideas that I just know that you would appreciate, especially if you had someone grafting with you :)
    EG.
    1) earth battery, you have the space
    2) your gas generator, using waste from all the creatures involved in the experiment including yourself and the grow tube
    3) I would have suggested mounting/half digging in the grow tubes into that mini cliff over there so that you could use the dirt to control the amount of sun/heat that those tubes get because in my experience it can get a bit much especially seeing at the whole tube is a diffuser and it could get quite intense in there (I realise that's why you have the radiator, can be used to warm up in winter as well ;)
    4) water heating system using anything and everything including the pilot light that the natural gas generator would be feeding
    5) start to experiment with ways to excavate into that cliffs rock so as to build the most perfectly secure and safe chicken hole residence/laboratory/storage space with a plan of it eventually looking like one of the vaults from the fallout game :p
    6) with all that sun. Using PVC pipe to build a solar water heating system that doubles up as an algae growing system that will help feed the grow tubes as well as the gas gen and maybe even an oil press to start making bio diesel.
    Dont get me started with everything that I would want to plant, not only for edibles but also for fuel and feed and building materials and and and
    Dude! You are my kind of person. Thank you for sharing everything
    Pray
    TGC
    Blessings in abundance
    P.S. remember you can also grow by hanging so as to increase growing space. Granadila comes to mind. . . .
    :D

    To cody if he ever sees this, its not ideal to cook using cow patties. They’re fine for starting fires, but for cooking you should burn through them and add wood, wait until that’s burned down to some nice white hot ashes, and you have proper cooking temperatures with no risk of contaminating your food.
    Also, get a good dutch oven for out there, its a pot with a lid that has raised edges so you can put it in a fire, scoop coals on top of it and cook with heat being applied from all directions. Super useful for outdoors living, and what few pioneers had them loved them.

    As weird as it seems, I recommend padlocking the chicken coop gate, and also putting chainlink over the top of the coop. Also reinforcing the chainlink with hardware cloth. As others have also commented, coyotes will climb up and over fences, but I've also seen them chew right through zipties and fencing wire used to hold gates closed. Hell, right through chicken wire fences too if it means there's a tasty meal on the other side. Gotta keep the birbs safe!
