    Some tips for the future:
    1. Start about 10cm from the root collar and angle your bore downward to the base of the root collar. If you're practised enough, you can often hit the actual germination point, and the angling makes it easier to resolve small rings.
    2. Use the angles of branches to find the middle of the tree. They'll all meet at the pith.
    3. Drill between whorls of branches. If you hit a knot your core will be all screwy.
Also, that doesn't look like compressed wood, just very slow growth!

Depending on climate and nutrients and water and the actual tree... if it grows slowly it can be older and look much smaller than a large tree that gets half inch growth every year and becomes massive. Desert trees grow slooooowly. Nutrients in the clay is very poor as well as lack of water.

Here in Norway at least when we bore for core samples, we register the age at chest height (about 1,3 meters above ground level). This is because usually you estimate more than a single tree, and it is tough work getting down on your knees every time you need to register one. So a comfortable working height was standardized.
We note whether the tree has been suppressed in its early growth, indicated by smaller spaces between the winter-growth(the darker shade of wood). If it has been suppressed, we note for how many years, and how long it would have taken the tree in unsuppressed years to grow the same distance. Then we stuff the core sample back into the same hole, if it can be counted in the field, this is to prevent bugs from entering the wound you have created.
Trees are very fun creatures! I'm glad I to see you've taken to understanding them better!
As for the size of the yearly growth diminishing in the later years, could it be connected to the change in the forestscape you keep referring to (fires burning down the majority of the woods), seeing as a forest that is missing many trees will not trap moisture and will dry the earth out, meaning less water overall for the remaining trees (or rather a less even access to water, seeing how it will have too much of it when it rains, and too little of it when its dry.)
Finally as for the age, similar sized trees here home are about 80 - 90 years in areas with plentiful resources and about 110 -130 years on the average. Not all that surprising that it wound up over 200 years old in a dry area.

    • @moobles2998
      @moobles2998 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@IsaacRC It's not such a big deal really, the tree is very good at plugging it itself, it's just that providing a loose material like the core-sample into the hole once more enables it to do it even faster than if it were just open, and it stops insects in the meanwhile. It's actually worse to plug the hole if it's a tight seal, as the tree then doesn't seal it itself.
Now in winter though it is very much a non-issue seeing as how many insects would be less active now. I'm not at all an expert on the parasitic insects in North america, but I can guess it's very roughly the same as northern Europe. at least on a grand scale with winter as a factor.

@@gholland5840 That depends on where you live and what kinds of jobs you can get too. The cost of living might be much cheaper in rural areas, but you also make much less money at whatever jobs you can manage to find.
Where I live half a mil is considered rich. Most live paycheck to paycheck and paying off a mortgage before going bankrupt is a rarity. I'm one of the lucky ones there, so far. I have no recreational budget except internet, lol. That helped a lot. That, plus, most everyone considered my place a dump instead of a fixer upper. It was cheap. It's not a mansion now, but it's a nice little home now, instead of a dump.
And I do emphasize, so far, when it comes to owning my own property and home. I could easily fall on hard times and "The Man" could take it anyhow, over taxes. Or the government could take it for eminent domain. I would be willing to bet eminent domain compensation is non existent or very little in NC. This state is not known for valuing its citizens' property, much less its citizens. Or some impatient pothead, who doesn't want to wait for it to get legalized nationwide, could plant a plant in the woods on part of my property and the police could take everything, unless I find the plant first, lol.
The local police here would do it too. They are hard asses over silly stuff, but let theft, vandalism and burglary go unchecked. They will literally tell you to change your locks after being robbed. You can forget any investigation. Theft and burglary are so common here, because the police don't bother to go after them. Let a pothead trip over a crack in the sidewalk though. They will be thoroughly searched with no filming of police allowed (it is against the law to do that here) and put in prison before they know it.
My gripes with the local police aside, in reality, we don't really own anything. We are only allowed to believe we do for a while. Technically, the government, whether it is local, state, or federal, can take your property, if they decide they want it. And if they do decide to, you are back to square one in a heartbeat. It happens in rural areas far more than people realize, because there aren't enough people to protest about it and make it known.

Counting tree-rings is not nearly as precise as one might think it is, cause a tree can have multiple rings a year. A 5-year old tree can have 7+ rings. Same applies to ice-cores. His tree might be closer to 50-100 years than 200 years.

    • @gg5115

This. In places with clockwork rainfall and a regular yearly growing season, tree rings are often one for one with years. There's very little risk. The tree will quickly produce a lot of pith to fill that hole, and it can actually be worse to fill it because the tree won't produce anything to fill it, and if our filler material falls out the tree can have that hole for a very long time.

This. Is. Awesome, Cody! Your re-treeing the ranch series is by far my most favorite of yours, and this investigation really does highlight the potential of such an endeavour!
I was watching your fall 2019 update the other day and I have been thinking about it a lot. About how the cattle trampled the trees.
It reminded me of the project happening in Scotland to restore the ancient Caledonian forests - they are seeding, yes, but they are also doing it somewhat strategically, working on small areas - islands in the landscape, if you like - wherein they can prevent grazing pressure from deer, sheep, etc. By simply protecting the tiny areas where existing trees remain, those areas are self-seeding, the trees are flourishing, and they're seeing corridors of forests and long-gone species return to the area. You can do a search for it and check that out.
It also reminded me of Geoff Lawton's Zaytuna Farm/Permaculture project. Two things you might want to check out there: 1) Their use of "chicken tractors" to churn up and fertilize the soil, which they then plant to trees. You have chickens at the ranch. Put them to work! and: 2) They use solar-powered, movable fencing to control their livestock and manage the grazing/trampling.
It would be interesting to see your take on these innovations - set up a chicken tractor to prepare the ground around a few existing trees - say, maybe over 100 square feet or so, then set up a fence to prevent cattle from trampling that small area, and plant a grove of trees.
In any case, best of luck! Keep us updated!

Net worth isn't how much liquid money you have in the the bank available to spend, it's a combination of the value of all your property and assets. So like house, land, cars, machinery, etc. plus all your money. Cody's family seem to be some kind of ranchers, so he probably has a lot of expensive equipment passed down to him that he can count.

It's just an urban legend that one ring equals one year. Trees build rings during growth spurts (wet/warm). An early warm spring a cold spell then a warm fall will produce two small rings in one year. The only thing that core is a record of is the weather, not the years.

One reason the tree rings being more compact in some areas than others is that the tree was struggling to get resources at the more closely packed rings where the rings are more fat and farther away from each other is that there was more resources to use so the tree grew more.
