    Daiwa reels are notorious for coming out of the factory without enough grease on the gears and oil on the bearings. I think the first thing to do is open it up and lube any parts that seem dry and then retest for smoothness to see if it makes a difference.

    If you had to rate the SS Air smoothness and casting compared to the 23 Calcutta bfs what would rate them? From what I’ve seen I made the right decision picking up the Calcutta. The performance and smoothness of the Calcutta being an all aluminum housing and more bearings seems to outmatch the new SS Air. I’ve seen a couple reviews and it seems that the Air also has a noticeable amount of more backlashes compared to the Calcutta. It seems the Air has to be perfectly dialed in and adjusted to perform well.

    Hi, in your opinion, for soft lures with lead from 1/8 oz up to 3/16 oz, with 8/10lb fluorocarbon, do you recommend: SS Air TW, Steez Ltd Shallow (1000s) or the CT SV TW?

    It's a nice-looking reel. It's hard to believe that it's not smooth. But most of the Daiwa reels I have gotten in the past need to be lubed right out of the box. I just purchased a Daiwa Tatula Elite and it was DRY. I've heard other guys talk about this on other channels. I know it is hard to take one apart after you just spent $300.00+ on it

    • @steveking8548

      @@steveking8548 You shouldn’t have to, but it happens, I’ve had several expensive reels from both Shimano and Daiwa that were either not smooth, making noise, bad or weak clutch, or drag not working up to rated strength. I try to fix mine myself if I’m able, by opening the reel up and it gets me familiar with the inside for later servicing. If I can’t fix the issue with a clean and relubing, I send it back. I’ve sent back a Shimano Mentanium for noisy/rough clutch, I’ve sent back a Curado DC for Clutch not working properly, then from Daiwa I’ve sent back a Tatula 200 HD for drag rating not reaching anywhere close to 15lbs max, and a Daiwa Zillion TW HD for the same issue as the Curado, the clutch wasn’t working properly, basically when I’d push the clutch down to make a cast, during the cast, the momentum would cause the clutch to re-engage without me touching the handle. This would cause my spool to immediately lock up, bird nest to hell and back, and then usually line snaps and lure goes flying far far away.

      They have plenty of gems, the only people that can't see that think maximum casting distance is the only thing that matters 😂, spoiler alert, most high end Daiwa and Shimano reels cast pretty damn well, 2 more ft isn't the only thing that determines how good a reel is🤷🏽‍♂️.

      @@cozab5487 idk i am owner of daiwa and shimano too.. i had issues only with daiwa so far. I dont think distance is everything but it can be a really important factor for some fish species. More than this for me prive vs quality vs comfort vs design = how i buy reels...
      for tournament fishermen that 6-7 feet more = 1 more fish = can win the round... once again i tell you that distance is really important for some
      i think daiwa has many big disatvantages such as not bringing new stuff in their new releases but atvertise them as "WOW" and price is insanely high for the components for most of the reels.

    Just return it you obviously got a dud, be weird to base a review on a defective example, it happens all the time but doesn't really represent the product. And before you start the fanboy stuff haha, defects are common with Shimano too, and their reel with the highest defect rate is believe it or not the $800 22 Stella FK😂, so don't start the bias here because it doesn't ring very true.

    • @THEREELTEST
      @THEREELTEST  ปีที่แล้ว

      cool story fanboy! 😆

    • @vieterisikaFI
      @vieterisikaFI ปีที่แล้ว

      Where did you hear the Stella FK has the highest defect rate out of all Shimano reels? 🤔 Haven’t heard noticeably more issues in that reel than in their others. The previous Stellas had some major issues at least with the early patches, which were fixed in later patches. When it comes to issues with reels I’d say I’ve had equal amount of problems with both Shimano and Daiwa, but fairly little with both overall. Noticeably less than what I’ve had with my Abu’s or other brands.
      I also has a bad gear set in my Steez Ct Sv which should be pretty much the same gearing as this SS Air Tw has. Very slight buzz that didn’t go away with service and light polishing. A new gear set was good and perfectly smooth, although it didn’t last a single season in brackish water without corrosion in the main gear. Still smooth after that though.

    • @cozab5487
      @cozab5487 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vieterisikaFI It's well documented in Japan and myself my brother and several friends all experienced the exact issue. About 30% of all 22 Stella's (of various sizes) would feel fairly normal in hand, but under a specific amount of load they would exhibit a harsh knocking and vibrations, however spin too fast or too slow and it would disappear, some also exhibit the vibration with no load but the knock would only show with tension. Thousands were getting returned and Shimano failed time and time again to find the issue, sending reels back with the same issue present.
      Eventually Shimano Japan addressed it and recommended all batches made before September 2022 to be avoided, with batches from October 2022 safe and indicated by a small blue sticker on the underside of the box.
      I think it's not known in the western world for several reasons, 1 Stella's are nowhere near as popular outside of Asia, 2 westerners in general tend to be less picky with their tackle, and 3 people generally try to sort these things out themselves before making videos/reviews etc and likely just assumed they had bad luck and probably ended up getting a perfectly good example as replacement.
      My brother and a good mate both have reviews/unboxings on YT actually (they are 2 of the most viewed Stella FK videos on YT) and both reels ended up having the issue.
      This of course is quite common for new reels, which is what I wanted this dude to understand, the SS AIR is a brand new reel, issues are going to present themselves and price has absolutely nothing to do with it, however we all know this guy has a weird thing for hating Daiwa and is not going to get it replaced but rather use it as fuel to further increase his Shimano complex of superiority 😂.

    • @vieterisikaFI
      @vieterisikaFI ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cozab5487 I see. I try to be as unbiased as I can get. 30% of bad reels seems very unlikely still. I tried maybe nearly a couple dozen Stellas before buying mine and didn’t notice anything unusual with any of them. And I’m picky af when it comes to reels. I replace a factory new bearing from a new reel I get like 20% of time in a new reel.
      Considering I tried nearly 20 Stellas that were pretty much the first ones we got in Finland and didn’t feel any slight unusual feeling makes me a pretty lucky person. With a 30% fail rate it would be about 0,08% chance to find 20 consecutive good reels. Sounds pretty impossible to me 😅 Also had no issue with mine when I got one in August and no blue sticker in my reel box.
      I sometimes find this and a few other channels quite funny too with the ”hidden” fanboy factor to certain brands. Not adjusting the Zero adjuster is maybe the weirdest thing people do. Daiwa literally says it means the knob can and should be adjusted and means there is no need to use it once it is set correctly. Seems to be hard to understand to so many people. Also casting distance from 5 casts being a big deciding factor for ranking would probably be the last way I’d rank reels. 😁

    • @cozab5487
      @cozab5487 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vieterisikaFI Did you read my comment my man? I said it would show itself under tension, and that you couldn't feel it in store unless they let you spool it with line go to the water and start fishing with 20 different Stella's before choosing one, which is highly unlikely haha.
      They had to be under constant moderate tension and they would start to have almost a sort of seizure with intense vibrations and knocking, however a few would also exhibit the vibration portion without tension at random.
      It's all there my man go look at a Stella's box built between October 2022 and now and you'll see the blue sticker I speak of, there's also multiple YT videos of Japanese anglers talking about it, have a read through the comments to see how many people experienced it, and many believe it or not even believe the rate to be higher than 30% (that's probably just bad luck lol), once again you can't know unless you actually fished the reel, which is the reason even Shimano themselves couldn't address it until September.
      And 100%!! How weird is it haha, he literally bases everything on a reel casting 2ft on average of 5 casts further than another and to him there means it's a way better reel 😂, the only people that think that must not actually catch fish.
