  • Hey guys!
    In this video we’re going to be tearing down and taking a closer look at the insides of the brand new Daiwa SS Air TW. There are a few things that Daiwa did that I’ll experiment with in in the future but the point of this video is to show the internals, and show where the four bushings are in the reel in case you would like to replace them with bearings.
    Bearing size:
    -4 bearings needed in 4mm x 7mm x 2.5mm
    I referenced Earl’s channel as “it must be the bait” but his channel name is “The Multi-species Angler”. My bad Earl!!!

      Hey James! That’s so awesome to hear! It means a lot to hear that these videos helped you upgrade and modify your first baitcast reel. That is precisely why I started this channel and so it means a lot to hear someone say that. Thank you for taking the time to say that and cheers my friend!

    Thanks for the shout out.
    I can send you those bearings 😊
    I have a ton I brought before covid. They are over priced now.
    Nice well in-depth detail video I skipped removing the handle and went straight to the c clamp retainer. Like you said it was already smooth the extra 4 bearings gave it that floating smoothness.

      Hey E! I appreciate that very much! Hit me up messenger as I’d love to take you up on that offer. Agreed on the skipping. Much of these teardown videos overlaps as most modern reels are quite similar. Anywho thanks again for watching and cheers my friend!

      Hey catcha! I understand. The reel is definitely not on the cheaper end of the spectrum for sure. I think this reel is particularly interesting though as this braking system may make its way through much of daiwas reel lineup. If so, that would be amazing to see as they can further lighten their spools for bfs and finesse fishing. Thank you for the kind words my friend and cheers!

    Thanks for the breakdown. I realized it's the same bearing layout as the zillion so maybe I'll replace the bearings on the zillion too

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey bubble! Nice catch! You might have an easier time as the zillion may not have an “air” spool. For whatever reason the air spools like to put the spool shaft pin closer to the outer edge of the spool making it very difficult to remove without the slpworks spool pin removal tool… I had to order one and it is still on its way 😅. Anywho, thanks for that but if info and cheers!

      Hey Eric! Yea I’ll def get some on the water, or at least distance casting, tests. I need to find a way to show the projectile motion of lures with this reel vs others. From my experience it is a very… unique casting curve. Haven’t quite experienced anything like this before. Will try to figure out what to do to film some comparisons. Cheers my friend!

    Bushing in the wormshaft seems to be the safest play since its a SW rated reel afterall. not to say that you cant install a shielded crbb in there but it increases the durability of the reel since there's one less moving part to worry about i suppose.

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey shak! I believe you are absolutely correct. My best guess is that daiwa is positioning this reel to be a work horse reel that will last for quite some time. Thanks for sharing and cheers my friend!

    Nice vid fella! Always baffles me why a bushing would be used rather than a bearing in a high end Japanese reel. For pence it could be 2 bearings more on the spec sheet and more could be charged. They would make a massive return on 2 bearings that cost pennies. 🧐

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there! You know I’ll have to message you separately for a better name to call you other than your yt handle haha. Hey there Perch seems a bit odd to me 😅. Anywho, I do agree that they could have easily added bearings and I was a bit disappointed when I found out about the bushings… however I do understand the reason they used them. However however I don’t understand why Shimano and daiwa are using magnesium frames in salt reels. I’m sure they can come up with something different say like a composite of carbon and magnesium maybe? A magnesium frame sandwiched inside of a carbon outer shell. Maybe this would eliminate corrosion but I think would be very expensive for them… very odd… very odd indeed haha. Things that make you go “hmmm….” 😆. Cheers my friend!

    I have a question, I have this reel and when I loosen the drag star not even all the way towards me (until it tightens in the opposition direction/not forward, but back towards me) the spool doesn’t move and my drag clicker seems to activate as I retrieve. Is this normal? Is it because I loosened it so much? My worry is that this happens when I loosen it not even all the way back. Thanks

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey avocato! Is this for a SS air tw? This doesn’t sound like normal behavior. Even if you tighten or loosen your drag all the way, if you aren’t putting pressure on your spool you shouldn’t get any clicking happening at all. Let me know and I can try to help out a bit more. Cheers my friend!

    • @avocato2829
      @avocato2829 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BFSFISHINGCHANNEL Yes, it is for an SS Air. That’s what I thought. The spool stops moving and it clicks simply by retrieving without any pressure. I don’t know what is causing this.

    Im wondering if I got an aftermarket spool (like Chameleon) and put it on a tatula SV or 80, would it essentially work as well as a Alpha Air or a SS Air TW for 2-4gm lures?

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey Michael! While an aftermarket spool for a tatula would greatly improve its performance for 2-4g lures I don’t think it would quite replace or perform as well as a SS air tw. Additionally, the alphas air tw does not come with a drag clicker like the SS air tw. However, there are aftermarket kits you can purchase for the alphas air. Hope that helps and cheers!

    • @michael2one
      @michael2one 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL good point. But for the alphas air with no bait clicker, maybe the difference would not be that significant. Some after-market spool may even be superior. The 2 reels have the same number of bearings. The tatula would have the advantage of a second spool (which could have heavier line for larger fish applications) making it a very versatile reel. The idea looks good on paper but who knows how well it works.

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@michael2one hey Michael! Yep in terms of bang for buck you are likely correct in that the tatula would make for a better bargain, especially with an aftermarket spool. I believe the two frames are nearly identical but the tatula uses a spool with a long shaft and the alphas air using a shaftless spool design. So… if you can find a shaftless aftermarket spool for the tatula that would likely perform extremely well for the money spent. Hope that helps and cheers!

    • @michael2one
      @michael2one 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL thanks! By the way, your videos are amazing. I can't believe you took the braking mechanism apart. The springs explains why one seems to engage the brake more than the other.

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @michael2one hey Michael! Haha much appreciated! I just wanted to compare the strength of the spring to the ct sv70 spring strength and thought that the difference was somewhat interesting. At some point, I’ll be “upgrading” the side plate magnet assembly as well. Apparently, the magnetic ring assembly has a weak point and I know of one person who owns the ss air who has had their side plate brake assembly break on them… Thankfully AMO has made a replacement part out of aluminum which should be a lot stronger than the plastic part the reel ships with. I’ve got the part in hand, I just need to find the time and how to tear down the side plate assembly now. Anywho, thanks so much for the kind words again and cheers my friend!

  • @zg1958
    @zg1958 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Seems I received a defective one, unfortunately. When I took the sideplate off to weigh the spool, the brake assembly fell off and the magnetic brake sideplate which is supposed to a single unit suddenly became two... Not sure how this got past quality control.

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there! Whoa… now that would really upset me… have you reached out to the vendor at all? Out of curiosity, where did you pick your unit up from? Do your reels lose smoothness after you open and close them?

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there tree! Thanks so much for the question! In short, no. If I ever experience anything like that it’s most likely due to improper reassembly on my end. In that case, I will disassemble and reassemble the reel again until the original smoothness returns. I think something like that would drive me crazy haha 😅. Imho, it’s always a good idea to open the reel up to see what’s been done on the inside in terms of manufacturer lubrication. Sometimes, factories will gum up reels with the amount of grease they put on the main gear or other areas and sometimes it may be the exact opposite. So… I quite enjoy giving my reels an initial inspection and servicing before taking them out on the water. I hope that helps answer your question and cheers my friend!

    I'm wondering is this worth the extra $64.00 over the tried & true 2020 Alphas Air TW?

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey crazy! I mean it depends on what you want but imho it is. Magnesium frame, Steez CT body, new redesigned brake system, lighter spool, and virtually headache free castability. On paper, it’s a superior reel to the alphas air tw. At the end of the day though what I say doesn’t matter much and it all depends on what you want to spend your money on! Hope that helps and cheers my friend!

    the old SS was made of magnesium, so i am not too sure why wouldn't this be made of the same material.

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there 800extra! Thank you for sharing that information! Magnesium is a great material to use for frames but it can oxidize severely in salt water. For this reason, I was questioning the choice of using magnesium as the frame material… especially in a salt ready reel. Anywho thank you again for the information and cheers!
