  • Aligning a Clutch - a simple but crucial part of fitting any manual gearbox. Getting it wrong is going to make installing the gearbox difficult/impossible. So get it right first time with the use of a simple alignment tool. Here's how.

    Heh... engine hoists.... in the old days... we used to hold the engine with one arm and put the bolts in with the free arm... ahh... todays kids..... don't know how easy they got it...

    Fast Rust -
    I am replacing the Clutch on my 03 Dodge Neon SX2.0 and I was jw about the alignment with a "Pre Assembled Clutch" how do I go about without hanging it wrong?
    I ordered the Alignment tool (it's in tomo)
    But being pre assembled I am not 100%

    • @FastRust
      @FastRust  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure myself! Maybe it becomes pre-aligned so you don't need a tool at all. Just bolt up and go. That would be my guess.

  • @MajorT0m

    How did you get your torque wrench to warp instantly to the next bolt which is immediately torqued up? That would be well handy to know.

    Does that alignment tool fit any car or does it have to be specifically for your car

    • @FastRust
      @FastRust  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will fit a lot of cars because you have options when it comes to dowel sizes. Will it fit every car under the sun? Probably not.

    What if the clutch fixed without alignment

  • @callofdutyguy9
    @callofdutyguy9 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I used the alignment tool on Toyota 1GR engine. The pressure plate fingers look off center to the center of the clutch disc. Is this normal? I’m pretty sure I inserted the alignment tool all the way and got the dowel pins lined up. I even marked the flywheel and pressure plate before disassembly.

    • @FastRust
      @FastRust  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's sometimes hard to tell eyeballing it. Unless you get your eye dead in line it looks off. I replaced a Yaris clutch last weekend and had to use a sharpie pen for an alignment tool. When I removed it I thought it looked slightly off. Gearbox went in like butter. If you used the right size tool and the pressure plate located on the dowels. I can't see it being off.

    if you dont align it, will that cause 3rd gear to bite?

    • @FastRust
      @FastRust  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nah. If you managed to get the box in with it slightly mis aligned, as soon as you step on the clutch for the first time it would have centred itself. Sounds gearbox related. Synchro maybe?

    • @Gtee7900
      @Gtee7900 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fast Rust thanks for the reply, when im in first gear and i let go of the gas it start grinding, when i try to put it in 3rd with clutch it wont let me, but if i use no clutch it will go in?

    • @FastRust
      @FastRust  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was the gearbox fine before you changed clutch?

    • @Gtee7900
      @Gtee7900 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fast Rust im not sure, the guy i bought the car from said he change the clutch and that they probably put in the clutch wrong in, and that all it needs is an alignment

    • @FastRust
      @FastRust  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a lot of unknowns so it's difficult to say. As for clutch installation, it is possible to put the friction plate in the wrong way, it's possible to incorrectly install the release bearing, or not install it at all - which I have seen! Then if it's cable operated you need to adjust that, usually at the bellhousing. Hydraulic clutch usually adjust at the pedal end. Alignment is purely to install the gearbox, so I can't see this being your issue.

    Where was this video 24 hours ago? I should have done more research.. I rebuilt my engine but didn't do anything with the clutch - including align it. I just bolted the fly and pressure plate, torqued, and have spent 24 hours trying to get the engine mated before I realized this. I also got debris from the driveshaft retaining clip *in* the transmission and subsequently "destroyed" the gearbox trying to remove what I thought was a cover. A ring came out, a bolt was left in - something to do with reverse I think, it's a mess.

      Sorry to here this. Happens to us all, just a part of the learning process. At least that's what I tell myself when I drop a clanger - which happens fairly often! Try not to beat yourself up too much.

    I still don't get why the designers don't bolt the clutch to the transmission instead of the engine.

    • @FastRust
      @FastRust  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The assembly needs to rotate with the engine otherwise it's all a bit pointless 👍

    • @busteraycan
      @busteraycan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FastRust But cant the clutch spin in the transmission housing by the axle coming from the engine?
      Pressure plates being attached to the engine or the transmission shouldn't make a difference right?

    • @FastRust
      @FastRust  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I see what you mean, have the friction plate spin all the time with the engine and the pressure plate stationary on the gearbox side. Kind of the opposite way round. Flywheel would have to be on gearbox side as well.. that might be the issue. Too much inertia on the gearbox side maybe? Theory makes sense though.
