Allergic Reaction in Target! 😷 (2/5/17)

  • Well, another allergic reaction was bound to happen. But this time, we were prepared! IV Benadryl and Judd saved the day! We have a few kinks to sort out, but our first round of using my IV medication in a medical emergency was a huge success. What could have easily turned into a need for Epi and an ER trip resulted in a recovery nap at home. I know the IV Benadryl may not always work, but today it did and for that I am thankful. Today we had the control, not my chronic illnesses! Join us to see the wild unpredictability that comes with having a medical condition, as they can strike anytime - Even in the middle of Target. I hope you have learned something, and thank you for helping me spread awareness!

    My allergist said to always shower at night so that all the pollutants won't go all over your sheets and then you rub your face in them. It helps with reducing sinus inflammation etc

    Jaquie, I love your calm disposition. When you describe an illness, or go through a crisis, your demeanor is straight forward, no drama, get er done! I'm riddled with chronic illnesses (hashimoto's thyroiditis, chronic kidney disease, poly-cystic ovarian syndrome, fibromyalgia, malnutrition, daily digestive issues, hypoglycemia, mental impairments, low iron, extreme lethargy and a host of other endocrine problems) but while I'm not comparing, you have so many treatments and interventions that are daily life and you never complain!!!
    I watch your vids and am filled with empathy and compassion for you, but also admire your strength and draw from it to empower my own. You're a good example, Jaquie. I hope you understand that you are helping others. Jenny

    Jaquie, you are absolutely correct! It is NOT possible, in the midst of an anaphylaxis crisis, to draw meds from a vial. This is why it was important for us to get a generic Epi pen available. Some people said that we could just draw up a dose of Epi from a vial when needed. But it's NOT feasible. That was my fear for you as you described your treatment protocol. You will have to carry pre-filled syringes so you can just get it down. Hard cases are a great idea for this. OR, another option is to use your liquid or chewable Benadryl at the first sign to get the process going. THEN take the rest of your protocol and use the IV Benadryl if needed. But in any case, you will need pre-filled syringes. Great job arresting the Ana crisis in Target team!!

    • @allergiesrusdb
      @allergiesrusdb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As far as the used syringes while you are out and about....You can simply recap them and place them back in your pouch. Then put them in a sharps container when you get home. That way you don't have to carry 'one more thing' with you.

    • @ChronicallyJaquie
      @ChronicallyJaquie  7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      You are right, no way we can do something like that during a reaction! Thankfully I have figured out how to cap the medication syringes without needles!

    • @laurensasine2211
      @laurensasine2211 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are devices called needle clippers that you can carry around with you or use at home, depending on the size of your needles you use. They are really small, about the size of a pack of gum.

    I use a carved wine cork to put on the plunger to prevent it from pushing down and dispensing meds w/o you.
    Also you probably had a reaction to the rug backing, so much goes into rug making that you could be allergeric to (latex, polyester, wool etc). My husband works in the flooring industry and often has allergic reactions to touching rug backings!

    I'm watching old videos because I just found your channel. Happy to see that the IV Benadryl treatment plan worked. I'm also happy you have a great medical team treating you based on test results and your experiences. I have been fortunate to find great Drs for my medical issues (Asthma Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome and severe Osteoarthritis in both knees). knowing that your Dr is listening and treating the person as well as the illness helps so much.
    My prayers are with you as you travel this journey. May God give you peace, comfort and understanding.
    Ps I noticed your backpack. in pretty sure that's a Vera Bradley. I have the same style back pack. It's also Vera Bradley but the quilting is Mickey heads and its the dusty blue color. it really is an amazing back pack. So big inside and it fits well on the back of my wheel chair. Although I drive my hubby and son nuts about not getting anything on it or crush the shape in any way. lol. We are big Disney nuts. as a matter of fact we just came back from spending a month in Disney World.
    hope you are feeling well today. :)

    I'm so happy you were able to stop it so quickly. I'm so sensitive to meds. When I have benadryl through iv, it made me trip like being on shrooms. First time it happened, I panicked and asked the nurse if the curtains were actually blowing. She laughed and said it could happen, like being on shrooms (which I tried in my youth) and I couldn't stop giggling at the room breathing. Still happens every time I get iv benadryl.

    Depending on the source of your allergies, I'm not totally surprised there were triggers in Target--with the amount of off-gassing of new products (e.g., electronics and that rug!) and dust/particles from packaging in there -- although it still totally sucks and must be super isolating. It's good to keep pushing yourself and trying to visit spaces -- and glad that you felt control. Cute dog, btw.

  • @phoenixmoon5580

    There are some 'caps' for the screw part of the syringe bit that would prevent the medicine 'escaping', and you just need to put the needles on the syringe (if you have the separate syringe and needle thing!). There can also be super tiny personal sharps container (or just get another hard case for storing the sharps until you get back to the car/home with the sharps container and do that as a 'post time out of the house routine'). If you need pouches, maybe try the 'travel wash bag' or 'makeup bag' aisle. Soft pencilcases are also useful!
    It would be a good idea to colour code the pouches/hardcases/whatever, so if you are with someone who isn't familiar with what you need you can communicate what pouch you need first. Pick your three fave colours, or colours that you feel connected to, or colours you associate with your various conditions/symptoms. You could buy a pouch/hard case that was close to that colour, and maybe go and find a coloured tape and then everything for whatever has that colour. For instance if neon orange and/or neon yellow was for the drawn up IV emergency medications including the flushes etc, if there isn't a neon orange hard case you could buy an orange or yellow (whichever looks best!) hard case or pouch, and then put neon orange/neon yellow tape (for added oomph and usefulness maybe get a glow in the dark version of the tapes) on it in various places! You could then have a black hard case (maybe with red and whatever colour striped tape, and maybe have a locking mechanism on it so it doesn't open up on it's own!) as the 'for the moment' sharps/old medical syringes and vials container. If you have a memory like mine, you might want to have a place that you would check daily (like I sort my purse/handbag out after each time I go out, so I'd put a small pouch or use a small compartment to put the used medication wrappers, vials/vial labels, swab packets, alcohol wipes etc), and so you can 'restock' the ready IV meds bag for next time. When you get home and do this, you can always set something up so that Judd can check that you have the right dosage drawn if you are groggy and not 100% with it from the attack earlier. You could also maybe have a colour such as blue and without any tape, that has two compartments, one that you've additionally padded for the medication vials, and the other for alcohol wipes, swabs, spare needles and spare syringes in the amount you require etc. Then you can just keep the blue one as a back up, or if you are away from the house for a couple of days etc. Just remember to go through this and change it every 3 to 6 months to make sure that the spare stuff and alcohol wipes, swabs, vials, sterile water etc is safe to use and at least 3 months left until the expiry date. That way you can make sure you have some backup supply for general, and for when out!
    (Sent with intentions of kindness. I want to assist to attempt to make things easier for you. I have chronic conditions of different sorts, and I know it is so very easy to overlook the simplest of things! Please note, I do not travel with needles on me unless from the pharmacy, and I do not carry prefilled ones. Check that my advice works before relying on it!).

      Sometimes I need to explain something more full than a text message length will allow me. Although, that technically isn't necessarily a piece of fiction, more of a suggestion for something that might help someone else. Sometimes being too close to something makes you struggle to find strategies that would be more beneficial than current ones. Other times you are too exhausted/brain foggy to think of words, let alone what your name is, or a potential improvement to a system that semi works. However, if you don't consider everything carefully enough it could mean something mostly minor (it's not, but she has said her attacks happened regularly so overtime it might seem 'normal' and 'not a big deal' to her, just like passing out from pain and blood loss on the toilet for over an hour became to me!) could become life threatening and at least urgent care if not emergency care and higher than ICU status.

    I found it so cute when Harlow got excited to go out, it's like she knew how happy you were to be outta the house😊 and according to my bro I'm a 'spontaneous' shower person😆 meaning I shower day or night no matter how late or early it is😅😂

    The heparin could probably wait until you were safe...I can't use heparin at all so I actually have a Groshong port...the valve prevents blood reflux into the catheter and allows for saline only. If I weren't accessed all the time, I'd also only have to flush it every three months!

    I noticed your beautiful dog had breakfast sometimes I think you're giving Harlow dinner:)
    I've always had confusion with feeding.
    Does Harlow get breakfast lunch and supper or just breakfast and supper?
    How often do you provide free access to water?
    I like to learn, thanks !

    if you put the rolls in a tin , squished all together and cover with tinfoil they stay moist. Let them cool for 5*10 minutes then put the frosting on it wont melt as much. I like to add raisins or other dried fruit to them. it softens as it bakes. Tin foil

    First time I have seen your feed, your dog is so pretty, and I am in love with your pill pack. I too have a mini pharmacy and several times during the day have to take meds so I love your time slots. I also am curious now about the otc med your take for migraines. Will have to see if it can work for my chronic migraines. Total side note, not sure what all you have going in (need to watch the intro video you suggested) but I saw a mask like yours today. First time I had ever seen one like that. Made me curious about it. Why do you use yours?

    cPTSD nightmares & flashbacks = zero good sleep, ever. Morning shower for Judd's reason and evening shower to try to relax before sleep. If we go into drought conditions in the Tampa Bay area, it's my fault.
