That redhead automatically calling the people complaining racist when race wasn't even mentioned, now that's an issue.
As for the protagonist being female, depends how its done.
If the story is handled well and isn't anachronistic I really don't care, nothing wrong with awesome female warriors if they're done right. Let's wait till we actually have gameplay before deciding whether its woke or not. So far I see nothing to complain about.
Of course I had no idea about the actresses personal eccentricities, I actually didn't even realise the character was female until now. But still, I am prepared to give the benefit of the doubt, for now.
Will see the truth in a year and then I can decide whether to buy it if it ever reaches PC, probably sometime around 2030.

What I don't understand is anyone's praise of the Mary Sue type of character. Shouldn't it be mere common knowledge that a character without flaws is known to be a 2-dimensional, flat, not fleshed out character? What character even has a story that isn't a human one? And if it's a human one, it's a story that shows that the character has a way to be broken down. Not just that, but whenever a character that has human flaws is analyzed, it's only because of those flaws being able to be broken down that we can understand this character piece by piece, character action by character action into their development, plot point by plot point wherever such a character is involved in the story.
There's a strict difference between a believable character and a forgettable character. It's simple Writing 101 knowledge. The only other option is the always failed attempt of reinventing the wheel.

@@PaulFilmer While I generally agree that you don't know yet, you still get a positive or negative feeling just due to what you do find.
What are they talking about? How do they present them?
If you have an actor/voice actor talk about the character, traits, their journey that often leave positive impressions.
But if they only talk about "she is a strong character" or actively already attack possible customers by stating "if you don't like it you are xyz(insert buzzword here)" that will most likely leave a negative reaction due to recent years experiences (and I am just talking in general, not specific to this case)
Marketing is important, if you market a good product badly, you will lose potential customers at first, you might gain them back later if it turns out to be good.
If you market a bad product well, you might win some customers beforehand, but might lose them later if it turns out to be shit.
Worst case: you market something bad as it is, and then you run into real issues - at least if your goal was to make money.

If I have a choice, and a romance option doesn't depend upon it, I'm going to play as a guy. What can I say? I'm straight and enjoy seeing a good-looking male avatar on my screen much more than a lass.
And I know I'm not alone in that as a woman. No more so than the numerous men I know who prefer to play as female characters for the same reason. So who are they really trying to appeal to by saturating the gaming industry with girlboss leads? Certainly not female gamers like me.

But I do get it, I know many who like to play the other gender more or less because eye candy. And that is very valid honestly.
It is odd how today there seem to be so much talk about what people want from creators (regardless if it is a movie, game, show whatever), without actually understanding what different opinions exist. They seem to be in the mindset we need black character for black people to like it. Female because only then women like them.
How you can be so narrow minded that you can't understand that people can relate to someone else or actually like to see something they are not in real life seems to be lost on them.

Personally, I like playing male characters because I enjoy projecting myself into videogames as the lead. They take actions and make responses akin to what I think I would do in those situations. I can never relate to female characters. They ruin the "fantasy" so to speak, so I just don't engage in them. Which sucks because there are games I want to play, but never did specifically for this reason. Horizon being a great example of this. Its my own bias, but it's how I enjoy the games. I would much rather games just come with the option to select a gender but I recognize this can be prohibitive.

In Japanese history, there were female warriors, known as Onna-Bugeisha, who fought in battles, but there is no well-documented case of a female samurai single-handedly killing many men in battle by herself. Onna-Bugeisha were trained in martial arts and combat to defend their homes and families, particularly in times of war.
One notable figure is Tomoe Gozen, a legendary female warrior from the late 12th century. She fought during the Genpei War and was renowned for her bravery and skill in battle. While accounts of her exploits include her defeating male warriors, the stories are often romanticized or exaggerated in literature and folklore, making it difficult to separate fact from fiction.
Though women warriors existed in Japan, the concept of a female samurai single-handedly slaying many men in battle is more of a myth or literary embellishment than historical reality.

"Though women warriors existed in Japan, the concept of a female samurai single-handedly slaying many men in battle is more of a myth or literary embellishment than historical reality."
Though to be honest, seeing that in a video game, a female protagonist slaying many men, is not less unrealistic than male protagonists slaying hordes of enemies in all kinds of games.
That is not the issue imho.
The issue is that this DEI-controlled studios lash out at gamers with "You're sexist, you hate female protagonists" while that couldn't be further from the truth.
There is a difference between a well written, believable character of an ethnic minority, who may or may not be female on one hand and a DEI-propaganda speaker masked as a minority/female/both-protagonist on the other.
And one doesn't even need to go that far back to find well written female characters in a story. You often hear e.g. "Princess Leia" as an example, but even if you look at RDR2, which is not that old, it contains strong female characters without all of that DEI crap, the best of all of them in that game being Sadie Adler.
So luckily there are still some game developers out there, who understand the importance of that difference and who understand gamers. Not saying that R* would be perfect, they're flawed in many other ways in return, but at least they get that right. That gives hope for the upcoming GTA 6 female co-protagonist.

I remember in FFXV, the VA for Noctis was discussing fan theories about the game with one of Square-Enix's localizers and he successfully persuaded the localizer to change the description of the Rock of Ravatogh in the English text of the DLC Episode Gladiolus to say it was the corpse of Ifrit (he had been reading the infamous "Pitioss Theory" that was making the rounds in early 2017), despite this having no textual basis in the Japanese script. The eventual release of the Episode Ardyn DLC destroyed this theory.

The Onna Musha were female Japanese warriors. We have good historical accounts of their existence, and what we see in the rest of the trailer seems to be accurate to Japan at that time. Sucker Punch did a phenomenal job with the first game, so I'm not immediately worried about a politically minded VA.
I might be more concerned if it was an actual project lead voicing political opinions. VAs don't usually have much power over the story of a game. It's kinda like how actors aren't going to re-write a movie script.

No one really wants to hear a story about a person who starts out perfect, stays perfect, and ends perfect without ever having been challenged to grow or learn anything throughout the story. That's why people reject the girlboss, but still happily embrace a character like Lara Croft or Ripley from Alien or more classically, Scarlet O'Hara, or any number of others. People's behavior often baffles me. While I have a strong aversion for the absolute rot that is woke culture, I equally find it troubling when those who claim to be anti-woke exhibit similar hostility towards innocent individuals, blurring the lines between the two. I've seen males who harbor deep resentment towards female characters, solely driven by an almost primal-like insecurity that blinds them to the strength and qualities these characters embody. This insecurity often manifests in aggressive and animalistic behavior, including strong vile sexual threats and insults once they face defeat by a female's hand.
To blame this behavior solely on "trauma from the greedy game industry" is both unfair and misleading, as the roots of this issue run deeper. It's crucial to recognize that not all men embody true masculinity or virtue; many display traits that are frustratingly and perplexingly immature, cringe and petty, mirroring the very characteristics associated with contemporary woke culture individuals, such is the disappointing human nature unfortunately.
When I watched the Ghost of Yotei trailer, my immediate thought was that the character looked astonishing, edgy and badass (really hoped she kept the mask on though cause sheesh her jaw is almost non-existent), on the sole fact that it's a female making me look forward to play as someone more visually appealing while battling enemies. It's crazy to me that others didn't share at least a similar perspective to this; so I'm curious as to what went wrong with their brain. it seems like some people are just looking for reasons to complain about the next best thing, as if their day depends on it.
Truth is as of currently we quite simply lack the means to determine whether Ghost of Yotei is truly deserving of the accusations being hurled at it. So there is no valid justification for the behavior of these critics, it is devoid of merit or logic, seemingly mere senseless complaints of children seeking something to cry about.
Personally, I see this as a win regardless of the outcome considering the second it releases on PC the modding community will be absolutely ruthless and i can't wait >:D

As the philosopher Heraclitus once said, “The only constant in life is change.” So long as the change serves the story and deepens our understanding of struggle, growth, and victory, it holds value. But if it’s change for the sake of novelty, then the spirit that once animated the narrative can get lost.
So when a game based on historical events or time periods suddenly places a female protagonist in a role that would traditionally have been held by a male warrior, it can feel out of place or inauthentic. It’s almost like rewriting history in a way that might undermine the realism of the setting.

Why do they always use the "It's because I'm a woman" card when the game is criticized?
The real problem is that this game has probably been in development since these policies were introduced into games, and the fact that the DEVs have their pronouns in X and this "If you don't like it, don't buy it" line proves this, even though he's a former boss.
Every gamer worth their salt knows how to separate beliefs from art, and that's a fact. Before, it was the older people who complained when something came up that went against their religion or politics. But today's games have forgotten about being an art form and valuing the experience and story to become a political disseminator. The feeling of playing these games today is like they're telling you, "Hey, you piece of shit. While you're playing, there are a lot of gays, lesbians, blacks, women, etc. dying and it's all your fault, man. Good game. 🙂“
And the result of all this politics is exactly what Marvel, Disney and now Ubisoft are going through...
When these companies realize that insulting their core audience and selling products to people who don't buy them doesn't generate a profitable return, many of them will already be out of business.
But of course, if you argue about this, you automatically become sexist, racist, fascist, homophobic, far-right and a fan of the mustachioed man.
The fact is that the game stops being a game and becomes a simulator of real life, and if it lived real life all the time, no one would buy games anymore. What made games good was being able to enter a game and feel like the outside world didn't interfere with it. Imagine a GTA where you got arrested every time you ran a red light, or a Mortal Kombat where you could resolve differences through conversation. These are small things, but they make a difference in the player's experience and don't remind them that the outside world exists and has problems. People play to de-stress about life and feel lighter, not to worry about it.
People who don't understand the complaint are like this...👇🏾
“What do you mean you want a game with a good story, characters with personality beyond their sexuality, beautiful characters, a magical world... and you don't want to know about my political side and what I think is right? Homophobic!😡“

I have no issue playing playing male or female characters. I have noticed that I have been preferring male characters lately in all media, and I kind of wonder if the "girlbossification" of female characters have tainted them for me. I still read/watch/play stuff with female main characters, but I tend to stay with stuff that has proven itself to me as good over the years, mostly authors I've been reading for 15+ years, or watching the same shows I watched ages ago. I have been adding titles, but they tend to be old - like made in the seventies and older old.
Regarding this game specifically. I have no issue with them wanting to set the sequel so far after the first one. I have no issue with them wanting to do a female character. I do have an issue with the one voice actress they picked. Of all the people they could have picked, why her???? Her being such an outspoken activist is the biggest red flag to me. I probably would have bought it the moment it came out on PC (even if it took several years like the first one did), but I am 100% going to need to see more details about this game, and probably a dozen or more reviews (preferablly unbiased) before I even consider buying it now.

I think the recent years both in gaming in other media has left a mark on many. (myself clearly included)
I personally already roll my eyes if I see certain things up front, that are starting to be red flags. As soon as I hear "strong female character" or "diversity" or "inclusion" I already lose interest. Those are buzzwords now that make me think whatever it is, it is not worth my time, because it sounds like there has been zero effort in actually writing a good, compelling character with a nice character arc, a good story and have world building around it.
And I agree, as soon as I see an actor (or voice actor in this case) that is such an activist, I immediatly expect the product to have a similar mindset, because I expect they hired the person because he or she fits in the mindset. Simply due to experiences in the last few years.
Compare that to someone like Jenna Ortega, who sounds VERY different when she talks about her character ect. Or Henry Cavill who sounds invested in what he does.
Sooner or later these ideas will die out I think, because there is no money in it.
What I also found out is that if I watch an older movie, or play older games I tend to then realise if there are any of the characters in it that are often just badly written today. Back in the day I didn't even thought about it that way, because having a female, black or whatever character didn't stand out because of that trait to me. They were just a character so to speak. That is honestly how it SHOULD be. It now feels like people wrote characters back in the days, and then it might be a women, black whatever later on. Today it feels like they go in with "we need a xy character" and that should be enough for us to like it. (I think it is very possible that they still thought that way, but at least were smart enough to write the character in an interesting way, thought about how to weave it into the story, so that it works. Of course not always, but certainly often enough)
It kind of shows how broken their line of thinking is, since they seem to think people can only relate to a character due to their gender, skin color, instead of realising that most people can relate to a character due to their background, problems they run into, their failings and growth, how they overcome their flaws.

Not going to judge it at all for having a female lead (after all, Heather Mason is one of my favorite Silent Hill protagonists, only trumped by James Sunderland). When you concluded in the end I catched myself that I also prejudge games. I didn't care about female or male leads in games. I want to loose myself in games, exploring other worlds or dive into a well written story. It's escapism. But with all what happened in the last years, with Star Wars, The witcher, or other franchises I loved, I got really cautios. And not because they put inclusivity in those games, they should do it, IDC, but do it in a good way. Ghost of Tsushima did it well the first time. But it feels like they just think "The franchise is successfull, the fans will consume it anyway, how do we reach a broader audience to gain more $$€€?" And then they put out an effordless boring product with blant protagonists, sometimes broken bugfests, but hey, we have a transcharacter so you have to buy our game, right? RIGHT? If not your are a s*xist bigot. Consume my product, give me your 70$€ or you are branded as a s*xist. Of course people get cautious and sh*t on you. And I think some storywriters calculate exactly with that. Getting into a successfull franchise, because people consume anyway. You know your writing is not good and that is the only chance you have to make some money. Getting into an already existing fanbase, because you know if you make something from scratch yoruself, it will fail because you cannot write good stories.

When I see black or female leads that just tells me the quality of the product will be low and it is just being don for diversity and inclusion purposes, and it is not a real project someone put any creative vision into. Especially when an existing male character is replaced by a female character, or an existing white character is replaced by a black one. I will not buy it.

Here's my stance. Politics relating to current day issues should not be included within a games narrative due to it inviting discourse and alienation to those that may have considered purchasing the game. However, political themes and ideologies are perfectly acceptable within a game as long as it fits coherently within the narrative to which the story is trying to tell.
