Nice, finally a TH-cam advertisement I'll use! Dedicated game design and programming schools are ridiculously expensive, don't blame you for dropping out.
Buddy you do realize the different devs work for different companies right? What goes on in one studio has literally nothing to do with a different studio One thing you always have to keep in mind is look at the track record of the studio / developers actively working on the game. Ubisoft has had a CONSISTENT track record since roughly 2016 of working on absolute trash tear agenda-driven bullshit. Compare that to sucker Punch who has had a VERY consistent track record of doing the exact opposite. Consistently putting out banger after banger and even recently with Ghost of tsushima you can look at how they handle a strong female co-lead. They handled it perfectly and delivered a fantastic piece of work! So I'd say it's pretty safe to assume we're in the clear with getting a good game on this one.
As usual, actman doesn't see the elephant in the room. It isn't a 'cry wolf' scenario if the wolf was actually there more often than not. If the boy in the story had this kind of success rate in calling out the wolf, villagers would've recognized the pattern and made him the official village scout.
Right, but pattern recognition doesn't mean you've recognized an actual pattern when it happens. I think a more appropriate description of what we do is the following : Do you know that game where a person starts drawing and you have to guess what they are drawing, and you say what it ''is'' before it's finished? We are basically good at "filling things in". The person might end up drawing something completely different from what you say they are doing, but we fill in anyway. And that's why learning about causality, and how to withhold your first thoughts and think about them first is useful. To regulate your tendency to fill things in and/or freely associate anything to be connected , to check how valid or likely it is whatever conclusions you are making with the little bits you have, or are you premature in your conclusions and instead withhold making conclusions/ignore your initial impressions recognizing it's not based on enough info. Same mechanism is involved in becoming racist or superstitions etc. Always based on some bits of actual experience since no one truly completely makes shit up, BUT we fill things in if we don't take a step back and examine what we are doing.
@@nubbyfresh5623three points to consider: 1. Ghost of Tsushima had low-key woke. No attractive women for one and there was a prominent old lesbian samurai character. 2. It's not just the studios and devs...Sony has a heavy hand in all 1st party studios and they're all in on woke. 3. Games have long development cycles...GoT came out in 2020...was most likely in development since 2015. The woke started ramping up in 2016 so you can see the start of it in GoT...but it's REALLY ramped up since 2020... just look at the shocking difference between God of War 2018 to Ragnarok. Time will tell but given the performance artist chosen for the lead and that this is Sony...I will be genuinely surprised if the game doesn't have some heavily subversive themes. Last thought...given Sucker Punch's pedigree I'm sure it will be gorgeous with polished fun gameplay...but the best propaganda is made so that you'll love it. Arcane comes to mind...well done artful and masterful propaganda is still propaganda.
"Female protagonists aren't the issue, its the inauthentic way that the industry has handled "inclusivity" over the last few years that has caused players to recoil at the sight of anything that resembles it." You absolutely nailed it here.
But tbf this character isn't some woke DEI thing at all, and is just expanding on the world. Her being a woman isn't going to negatively impact the story in any way, and its set in a completely different area for a reason. Them going away from the main character is them signaling they want to make the "Ghosts of ___" a thing. This could open up so many GOOD things, Imagine a "Ghosts of Cardiff" or some other place in Europe with a focus on medieval combat. I feel like people have started with the idea that this will be bad because of a female protagonist, and are finding evidence for that and nitpicking everything. I feel this isn't throwing away our fan favorite characters, as it is expanding on the world they already have. Unless they kill him off in the first 10minutes of the game, its almost a guarantee that we'll see him again. Like he came to the conclusion in the video, we really just gotta wait and see, but if I had to bet money on this, its going to be a great game, and a GOTY contender.

You just nailed it, my man. Nothing wrong with female protagonists, but activist game designers have turned it into a red flag. People need to wait until they know more before judging the game, but being suspicious at this point is completely justified.
I don’t think having a female protagonist is a “modern audience “ ( critical drink TM) problem. Samus was female and well loved Ripley in alien is well loved. Jin was a very bland character in my opinion While I don’t think odyssey is the best AC game I do like Kassandra as a protagonist And this is coming from a 20 year Warcraft player who doesn’t play female or body type 2(lol) models
Nah, you should be able to use basic critical thinking to understand the context of seeing a woman or a minority in the wild. If your first thought is that it's gotta be pandering, you're still part of the problem.
@@Halfort57The first game ALREADY aligned with her politics. One of the most prominent characters in Tsushima is Lady Masako, an older 50-plus year old warrior woman who banged younger chicks on the side. Literally nothing we’ve seen about Yotei betrays the spirit of what was already established in the first game.
Gotta be honest. Jin was a fantastic protagonist. But I'm much more excited for a brand new story with brand new characters than I am watching Jin get his shit kicked in by a new adversary just to keep the sense of danger despite the fact that the previous game established he was nearly unkillable. Sequels tend to suck for me if they aren't drasticly changing their gameplay or giving you new characters that aren't established badasses yet.

But if you would be on the kitchen table like this, usually the thing that comes out is shit. Same goes here. People recognize a situation and based on the years of experience they have now, they expect a certain outcome. Expection anything else would be insane.
That's what I'm saying. Decades worth of incredible stories and characters have been ignored just to create unnecessary division and strife in the games industry.
Even the most diverse setting ever, Cyberpunk 2077, will have a new game awful, because diversity agenda will be forced there, even if everything is already 100% diverse.
Its why its so backwards now, Ghost of tsushima was diverse and rich with a beautifully accurate portrayal of Japan back when, while with games now they say their diverse, but so many of them are filled with so much discrimination and blatant offensive content towards the cultures they are derived from
Tetris never had to worry about being diverse and Mrs Pacman broke glass ceilings before most of these modern feminists were even a sperm in their deadbeat fathers balls.

Actually, there is a very good and consistent reason why people would not want to support this game over a single voice actor. They have learned over the past decade or so of games devolving into a censored, sanitized and micro-transacted mess that it is a very bad idea to keep giving money to people who hate, despise, and have no respect for you or what you do to earn your dollars - but will happily relieve you of them, while calling you a bigot. As you said many times, the corporations made the industry this way, and they are now reaping what they have sown. I never played the game yet so I could be wrong tho I just imagine it like a spiderman sort of thing where it ends a story with the writers showing despite it all spiderman has much more he will be doing off screen
Even worse, if Yotei was the 3rd installment after Jin´s story had finished in a second game, I would have welcomed it. There was so much still open in the narative. What happens with his relationship to his uncle( if you didn´t kill him, which I think was the canon ending), what happend with him being hunted by the shogunate, did he join or create a ninja-esque clan, the second mogol invasion, his realtionships with all the great characters( did the sake merchant/swindler ever make it to the main land or did Jin?) what happend to Yuna and his (maybe) relationship with her, does Jin have a legacy? And while a few of these things could be sprinkled into Yotei it will not be the same as if we would have expirienced with Jin as the MC. And even worse worse, since Yotei plays 300 years after the first game, the chances of us ever getting Jin back as an MC are probably zero....
4:08 no it doesn’t make sense. That thinking is why we get fifa games every year. Jins story is done. But this is not all. Just after Ghost of Yotei was announced, certain journalists started asking "Oh why is everyone defending this bland ass man", referencing Jin. Somehow Jin became a bad character overnight in favor of the new female protagonist. Most of us really wanted to see more of Jin and belive the ending for GoT was hinting that may be the case. Then again, people on social media started crapping all over claiming "Jin's story is over, you are just sexist" or some other horse shit.
No the last game was clearly leading up to a continuation of Jin's story... It's not Witcher 3.... Witcher 3 CLEARLY ends Geralts story, not only does his own clan of Witchers dissolve, he gets to choose his final love interest and set Ciri up for her own adventures... he also gets to actually go on pension with his own vineyard in the DLC. Geralts story is pretty wrapped up and done with. So that Ciri is the next main character is so clearly sat up and worked toward in the previous game. ...... There was no build up, wrapping up or sat up here... It was so obviously some consultant saying. "But you can't have a male protagonist, it must be female. That lady can do stuff, make the game about her."
Watch Endymion's latest video on this and Assassin's Creed Shadows. The initial plan, based on his sources, was to continue Jin's story. Apparently they changed direction within the last year or so. Combine wanting to have more of Jin's story with how Sony has fumbled sequels of some of its best games with the "for modern audiences" approach (Last of Us 2, Horizon Forbidden West, Spiderman 2, God of War: Ragnorak) and it's no wonder people are concerned with Ghost of Yotei.
I mean jins story ended. It has nowhere interesting to go next. No emotional hook. No easy way of starting the game without undermining the first. Everyone since the dawn of time have been apprehensive with protagonist changes. I remember when everyone hated the idea of playing as arthur in red dead. They then played him and ended up liking him more. Same with last of us 2. A lot of people hated the change but the change made sense and frankly after playing it most realised Joel wouldn't have worked as well. It's not worth commenting on until the game comes out. Are you sexist for not liking the change? No. But you are being stupid if you already adamant the change was the wrong one.
@@bopsie55 While I do agree many people have concerns with a change in protagonists, using The Last of Us 2 as an example of something that worked is a very poor example. Yes, some people liked the change, but MANY people--even those who less critical of current direction of gaming--did not like it. You can say you did and some others did but to act as if most people did is rewriting history. RDR2 may be a better example but considering I never played the first one and wasn't deep into gaming news then, I cannot give an accurate portrayal of the fans concerns with that game. As far as Jin goes, saying there's nowhere to go with his story is solely built on your opinion (which is fine) but has no basis on fact; from a storytelling perspective, I mean. There was PLENTY of things to touch on with his story. Japan was still inundated with the Mongols; he could have created his own band of ghosts to combat the invaders, and that's not even thinking about some of the situations he could find himself in with new characters. He's also an enemy of the Shogun. How would that affect his story? Being an enemy to those who you helped fight against invaders? If you personally did not want to see more of Jin, that's fair, but to say his story had nowhere to go is just incorrect.

Gamers had been hurt for so long, they can't hope a game companies to make good games anymore. Once there's a small change the game has a problem, gamers react how the previous games has been. It's hard to be not sceptical anymore, and not thinking for the worse.
We shouldn't let these people drag us down to their level. There's nothing with Ghost of Yotei that warrants being so skeptical yet, maybe that will change later on but right now there's no reason to be so upset. Fans got angry about Solid Snake being switched out for Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2, now he's a fan favorite character but he didn't start out that way. Nero wasn't liked at first upon his introduction in Devil May Cry 4 but in DMC5 he's now a favorite too. Point is we can't assume anything just yet, I understand feeling burned by recent titles but we can't start preemptively judging for things like the gender of the main character. If we allow ourselves to sink that low then we're no better than the people who caused this problem because that's exactly what they do.

I don't get that whole narrative of "we need representation in games so the underprivileged can identify with the protagonist". Maybe I'm old but when I started gaming in the 1980's, I didn't have to "identify with" Mrs Pacman to enjoy the game, or Giana's Sister, or Mario, or the frog that tries to cross a road... I was just PLAYING A GAME. I don't care if a figure on a screen is a man/woman/whatever, as long as the story makes SENSE. Unfortunately, none of the aggressively positive narration game (that end up being extremely toxic in the end) have ANY STORY. I have a feeling the kick-off call for most of those projects ran like this "White man -bad, everyone else -good. Go!'
I also started gaming in the 80's. Back when you were _never_ cool if you played video games. The reason they push this DEI nonsense is B/C China funds it here in the west. While banning any of these things in their country. They fund DEI in the west to the tune of trillions, BTW.
Most of it ends up shallow. The character can be male, female, nonbinary, whatever else, but whatever or whoever the character is identified as won't matter whatsoever if the character has as much depth as a puddle. Even worse now that if you say anything wrong about non-male characters, especially in large triple A games, you get hordes of corpo bootlickers ready to stir shit up because you said something "wrong" about the character and what (little) that character represents.
The whole concept of DEI is so foul. They have this ideology that everyone is oppressed apart from straight white men and they feel like they have to represent them without putting any personality to the characters. The gaming industry is foul.

7:19 THIS! You hit the nail on the head, this is literally it! Gamers have NEVER hated strong female characters, because they were almost always very well written and relatable. What they have and will continue to hate is the disingenuity and pandering used when presenting the new "modern" versions.
I think thats because they were almost always designed and written by men. Thats not to say women are bad writers, but men know what men like. Men can write relatable characters that appeal to other men better than women can, for obvious reasons. And today, with so much more women in game dev, even characters that are still written by men have a much more feminine influence. They are... inoffensive, at best. The overall big studio culture, everywhere in the west, is such that male writers take care not to step on any toes, let alone risk offending some of their progressive colleagues, and female writers just write what they know and like, but that often doesnt appeal to most of the players (men) that much.
@@MrDezokokotar Your comment reminds me of all those nerdy protagonists like Peter Parker that got the babe in the end. The sad reality about your comment is that most women aren’t relatable to today’s men. Most men value honor and loyalty. Today’s women (not all/but most in high paying corporate positions) don’t value honor and loyalty due to their feminine nature of monkey branching for the next best thing. If Peter Parker were to butt heads with Clark Kent, Mary Jane would definitely monkey branch over to Clark Kent since he’s much more powerful as Superman compared to Spiderman. It’s sad, but it is reality. Most people call that the red pill. Most men would get men with writing about brotherhood, loyalty, and respect. In the past, they set a standard for how women should behave in order to get the partner they desire. Women would know what men would want from them based off of these stories written by men. This in turn, set a standard in the dating scene for men and women to treat each other with respect. A woman, on the other hand, would write about greed for a man’s character as that’s usually hard wired into a female personality that plays into their monkey branching nature. Some of the best villains in video game history weren’t crazy about greed… they were crazy about love, honor, loyalty, respect, etc (Dutch Van Der Linde, Voss from far cry 3, and Raul Menedez were amazing villains to name a few). A woman wouldn’t have a standard to set when writing about a woman because most women view being independent from men as a sign of power rather than weakness (when it’s really a sign of weakness since no one is dependent on her love). To put things frank and bluntly, men still want stories with women written by men because men still value loyalty, respect, and honor. Loyalty, respect, and honor are hard to get out of today’s modern female. In most cases, male writing of women are perfect forms of male escapism as most of us men will never experience that kind of love, honesty, loyalty, and respect from a woman because they will just see us as a person that pays the bills for their way of life. In the past, I used to think of Hollywood writers as if they were wise and fatherly in how they portrayed characters through their stories. A good fatherly figure thinks about consequences and outcomes to actions. A good writer does the same thing as most good storytelling has a lot of great consequences due to actions or lack thereof. I think a big problem with modern society is that everyone thinks they are a “great writer” due to 120 characters on their average social media posting. The psychology of guilt within social media has put activists on a pedestal to the point that they are now the clergy class of society that dictates virtue to the masses. That and our nonstop need for instant gratification is getting bad to the point that entire generations like generation z are synonymously characterized with brainrot.

If customers dont like tomatoes, and the restaurant keeps putting tomatoes in their food, then releases a new dish that has a tomato all over it... it doesnt matter if the food is good even with the tomatoes in it. That person leaves and so does their money, then the restaurant is closed and the staff laid off and theyre like "I dont know what happened!" Like perhaps theyre new to the whole thing, but you poke and poke and poke the bear, the bear will eventually consider you a threat, and will attack as soon as you lift your hand. Act Ma'am likes to appeal to the boy who cried wolf but the false equivalency there is that the boy who was crying wolf in this instance actually saw wolves and the villagers have been ignoring him the whole time... and now he sees a pair of eyes in the bushes and since theyve been coming around so often, its no surprise at all, (even though people who like the changes like to act like it is) that he's preemptively trying to get someone to deal with the wolf. If the game is fine, this will be the one time, where the villagers came and will be the one time there was no wolf. Using the boy who cried wolf is a bad analogy to explain what has been happening, and is only apt to you, if you have been ignoring the decline of triple A titles that adjusted to put diversity at the forefront of their philosophy and deleted male protags to make way for the new lady character, only for the games to decline in popularity or the story to take some weird-ass left turn.

I don't know how else to say this but you bring so much reason to these conversations, while bringing a brutal honesty w/o falling into incivility like so many others. Also seeing around the industry you're being mentioned a lot, Gene Park from washington post for example has said he likes your content. keep it up
Haven't seen Gene mention me before, but thank you. I have no issue discussing difficult topics, and I try to give my honest opinion on things. As I've talked about on livestreams, it's much easier to be myself than to pretend to be someone I'm not. I'd have a mental breakdown, haha.
@@LegendaryDrops Yeah Gene mentioned it on one of the podcasts from Last Stand Media, referenced your last ubisoft video. It's definitely gone around! 15:23 Spielberg is wrong about one thing - Games DID reach a very high emotional impact. But not anymore, and as long as they keep trying to be like movies, they won't.
Damn right. I can think of two examples off the top of my head. Asura's Wrath brought me to tears of sorrow at one point and tears of joy at it's ending. (I won't spoil those.) Mass Effect 2 had a point where I changed my position in an argument over it. This one I'll explain. Garrus's loyalty mission. It sounds so simple: His little vigilante crew got betrayed and all but himself and the traitor were killed. He's finally tracked down the traitor and asks only that Shepard engage the traitor in conversation so Garrus can snipe him. Just before you get off the shuttle out to the location, Garrus and Shepard discuss just killing the traitor without even speaking to him. Garrus's final line is "If it was your crew, what would you do?" Shepard doesn't answer aloud, but the question alone caused me to reconsider the situation and in the end, stand aside for the shot to be taken. Because yeah, I would want to do far worse than the cold, instant and impersonal execution of a snipers shot. Is that reaction rational? No. It's purely an emotional one. It's a sentiment and feeling, not a logical conclusion or reasoned change of position. There have been other games, but those two are the ones that immediately sprang to mind in reply to Spielberg's position.
Robert DeNiro is an absolute lunatic in real life, but I still watch Goodfellas once a year. The voice actress and direction Sony has been going are massive red flags, but given how much I loved GoT, I'm going to give it a chance. Plus, I play in Japanese anyways, so don't care about her lol
Did ghost of tsusima end with a cliff hanger? No. The story ended. So instead of dragging out an already finished story beyond its intended conclusion create a new story with a new protagonist. This is how new stories and characters get created. Not everything has to have a million sequels with the same tired old characters. Not everything is a Disney creation.
Making people "feel seen" is an inherently _bad_ thing, because art is not about inclusiveness. Art is not about making people feel seen, it's not about adhering to a political or ideological stance. Art is about _personal expression._ And I don't mean that in the artsy-fartsy kind of way. I believe skill and technique should go into art, and in fact, I don't even think art is subjective in a broad sort of way. But the moment you say, "We're going to change or make the game in this way because otherwise we would be bad people," you've destroyed the foundation of the art and you've made instead a bureaucratic product. If you like the way black people look, or act, and you want that in your story, that's art. If you put them in there because you _should,_ that may be a lot of things. It may be pandering or kindness or a "product" or marketing or sanctimony or "for the good of mankind," but it isn't art.
>it's not about adhering to a political or ideological stance. thats just plain wrong. art is whatever its creator want to be. some of the most classic/beloved games like Metal Gear Solid or Spec Ops the line or nier series are all inherently political and are about making a stance. art CAN also be about making people feel seen
Art with political views have been a thing for over a century, I don't know what rock you people have been living under. Do yall just live in asmongolds basement?
While there are a lot of bad art out there. You just strip away nearly every purpose of making by saying art is not about expression of most of the important things in life. You seem to just not like what some people expressed.
Cyberpunk 2077 is a great example of having “inclusive” stuff in a game that is authentically implemented is not a problem. You can modify yourself in that game but because it works within the world that CDPR made it isn’t a problem. People don’t like forced agenda, that’s it…
Depends on who you ask. According to some Cyberpunk is woke, Space Marine 2 is woke, Skyrim is woke & Helldivers is woke. Anything with a person of color, non straight or a female is now woke according to some. It's hard to take it seriously when it's so loosely applied to everything
Cyberpunk never felt authentic like the Matrix or Mr Robot. It tried to copy that vibe, but couldn’t because it tried too hard doing what Star Wars Outlaws did in portraying an “outlaw” or “punk” as a good guy. AC Valhalla did the same thing and the Vikings are historically known for plunder and evil deeds. Heck, I would get shadow banned into oblivion for mentioning historically accurate Viking lore on YT. TBF most of these companies creating these blockbuster matrix style products as video games and movies are the very antithesis to those products of video games and movies. To be frank, they are the living embodiment of the bad guys that Johnny Silverhand hates. RDR2 was successful compared to Cyberpunk because it actually allowed you to be a bad guy in the game. That and it didn’t take 3 years to become playable after release. In short, inclusivity hindered the story of Cyberpunk because the story didn’t feel raw and edgy like how the actual punk genre began. Punk had its roots in going against the mainstream. Inclusivity is the living embodiment of mainstream as even the US government pays more attention to “inclusivity” rather than real life problems like rising crime, unemployment, rent, etc. The car racing missions in Cyberpunk were dumb when you realized the woman who was getting you to race was an actual 300 lb man. I didn’t need to know that kind of information playing the game, and it took me out of the immersion as I was reminded of today’s dystopian politics because of it. Judy’s missions were also boring as hell. Finding out that she was a lesbian didn’t really bother me. TBH it felt like a “cool story bro” moment that didn’t make the character seem relatable. Isn’t relatability what most consumers care about? Isn’t that what sells tickets for football games? I swear, these DEI developers create inclusive content like they are foreigners needing Hollywood movies made in their own language. Unfortunately for them, most people interacting with their content have great love and respect for the opposite sex. Unfortunately for them, most people have a beauty standard hard wired into their dna. Straight white male content has been perfected since Hollywood got its origins from the Oregon Trail. Someday, people will laugh at Cyberpunk’s portrayal of the future. It will age just as badly as those Jetson cartoons. Our modern time period will be looked back on as the Dark Ages due to corporate political activism. People will talk in disgust about this type of political activism as if it were out of style like those horn rimmed glasses and bell bottoms people wore in the 70’s. Anyone remember when the hipster was thought of as a cool personality type? That’s sooo mid 2000’s. Nobody gives a shit about the hipster anymore. AI replaced the hipster because it’s a hive mind of all our thoughts, feelings, dreams, ideas, and predictions. Nowadays, I prefer the hipster over the activist. At least the hipster was trying to get you interested in new things compared to virtue signaling and ruining already existing franchises.
@@wolfrayet0042 woke is not a yes or no thing it's a spectrum cyberpunk 2077 IS woke, Arcane is woke, Undertale is woke but these three have just a bit of wokeness and it's more or less tasteful + the product itself is good you can have racially and sexually diverse characters, just don't make it their personality and focus on making them characters first, diverse second also if the setting is medieval, then you need to justify having black or female characters in positions that don't make sense normal, and they have to be an exception, not the norm
@@SuperBennnnnnnnn relax buddy if this follows the trends that all these companies do this game will be bad I’m telling you so let’s just wait and see.
Highly agreed with the explanation. It's easy to state what we hate abt today's games, but not pointing out the actual festering wounds of a problem with the games industry these past few yrs like ever since the pandemic
I think that ppl gonna push this over the edge at some point. The woke trend makes so many people mad, destroys many things in the gamers community and the industry too. As now, anything that is marked as dei or woke would be jugded so hard even when the game itself is not bad.
@@QuangTran-zy6sgfans of media have just been burned so many times. This game could turn out to be amazing. Just with every group comes the vocal minority that’ll be hating this instantly because of the female character. What can you say when these companies show time and time again they can’t write a good female character like they used to. It can be done though. Also an activist as the voice actor doesn’t help.
@@AvaaSlays_Swiftie the voice actress is a great red flag more then the female protagonist. Especially when Sony has been known to encourage activists taking over sequels. If the development team wants to prove people wrong they should either do a story trailer or early gameplay. Anything to try and prove the doubt wrong, but personally the voice actress has justified all the more reason to not get hype for this game.
We are already at that stage recently, any games that have a slightest sign of "woke" is getting boycott and backlash. But you know who created that? That's right the community/organisation that push the woke stuff. The pendulum is swigging back again and I'm afraid it's not just gonna only be the woke crowd who is gonna pay the price.
A counterpoint to your counterpoint that has been brought up but needs repeating: They won (and rightfully so), but now pattern recognition has overridden nuance and patience to such a degree that lots will scream woke before more information comes out just at looking at one teaser image or super short vertical slice of a preview (and we all know the truly woke ones tend to drone on to hammer a point rather than tease). That's what Act Man was talking about.
I completely agree, and I’m female. My issue with games right now is that they are replacing previous male roles with female characters. It’s stupid. Games like Perfect Dark or new IPs like South of Midnight…people were excited for those games. No one was upset. But replacing Jin or making Mary Jane stupidly OP is just aggravating…and I didn’t even like ghost of Tsushima. The same goes for Race swapping popular characters. The problem becomes that it’s now “woke” to make any game with a female or POC lead character, and gamers automatically think it’s bad. It doesn’t do women or POC any favors to force this into existing stories. It doesn’t create tolerance, it creates backlash and anger. The best way to do it is to write new stories and new IPs.
Perfect Dark and other games back then were a different time. Today, politics is applied to EVERYTHING. You can't make a damn ham sammich without someone wondering if the mustard is woke or not. It's stupid.
Well, you might have missed the South of Midnight backlash... :D Not because it has a female protagonist but because Sweet Baby inc collaborated on it. We'll see when it comes out but i would be shocked if the writing doesnt stink of progressive politics. While a female protagonist doesnt make a game woke necessarily (Stellar Blade is not woke), it is a red flag because these days, when it comes to western games, a "diverse" protagonist or cast so often correlates with the game having annoying pandering and activism shoved in. And i disagree about the new IPs. Thats not a solution, not anymore. Sure taking over old IPs is worse, but by now people are so fed up that they are immediately skeptical even with new IPs when they see something that seems like forced diversity, even if it isnt. Honestly devs that do have a genuinely good idea for a "diverse" protagonist are kinda screwed right now, it will immediately put them on the back foot.
@@ganggang3788 It doesn't work that way, it's more like: "You can't appreciate ham sandwich without someone trying to push their opinion if the mustard should be put or not."
Thank you for actually acknowledging people's concerns and not just arrogantly brushing them aside, and I appreciate that you're giving your personal thoughts as well.
This whole "we need 50% or more main protagonist as female" thing is making most gamers skeptical when you see this stuff even tho that might not be the case also Sony did recently and publicly doubled down on pandering and diversity as the main focus in their games
This will depend on how Sony, Sucker Punch and the Cast if they go to the Concord and Ubisoft route (hating the gamers) the goodwill of the last game will be forgotten. But if handled properly and the game is as good as the last game then people will buy it. But we can't blame the complaints of other people because all are tired of it.
Most of us think wonder what their tune is when getting their teeth kicked in and more and more that kind of thought becomes the stronger one till it happens and honestly I have zero sympathy should have been knocked out sooner. Journos don’t think they fabricate racism and it takes a real pile of crap to somehow make racism out of nothing but they sure do that well.
It’s still a wonder to me that such a profession continue to exist in the age of internet and social media. All these independent TH-camrs does a way better job reporting and reviewing games than the so call professional journalists
I got to say that i do trust SuckerPunch with female characters, Look at Yuna, Masako and Tomoe for example, they are badass female characters and if they can also bring that to live with a character like Atsu it could be a really great game, i also would have loved a new story about Jin Sakai and maybe in the future we wil see that but for now whe just have to wait and when the trailers and game arrive whe can judge if we like it or not.
I honestly just want it to be good. Sucker Punch has a good track record with Sly Cooper, inFamous, and now Ghost of Tsushima. In a lot of ways, they should be the face of PlayStation since they've developed incredible games for Sony since the PS2.
@@treyfolkmen7942 If you're talking about that dev team picture that's currently floating around then must inform you that this picture was taken on International Womens Day in like 2018. As of right now the only information that we have about GoY's developers is that it has the same directors and producers as Ghost of Tsushima.
The game wasn't woke enough so Sony refused to promote it. It then didn't hit it's sales targets and Sony refused to green light a sequel. If they do now make a sequel it will undoubtedly have a girl boss protagonist and miss the point of the original. They also won't bring back the people who made the first game. They've moved on. Be careful what you wish for.
Bro somehow forgot Spider-Man, in fact we have TWO, when it comes to male characters from Sony 😅 Also if you discount characters like Nathan Drake and Deacon St. John because their stories are either over or won’t be continued, then a female character like Selene from Returnal doesn’t count either because we know that Housemarque is moving to a new IP. I could also get extra pedantic and include male characters like Ratchet and both Clank and Astrobot are perceived as male. That isn’t even to mention second party games like Death Stranding that have a male lead or third party titles that are financially supported by PlayStation like FF7R and FF16. I wonder if the people complaining about a male lead being taken “away” (Jin’s story was finished btw so try keeping the same energy) will have the same issue when the next “Ghost of” game has a male lead again? 🤔
If the game isn't for you, don't buy it. Put the wallet down. Take a deep breath in and slowly let it out. Relax. There are other new games that might be for you. Dig a little. Don't just buy what is pushed in your face. Stop buying garbage.
Personally I was a little bit disappointed because Jin Sakai's Story wasnt over. You finish the game and have the feeling that Jin and other characters have loose ends, more adventures ahead. So, when the sequel not only changed the main character but also the time period, I was taken aback. Does that mean the game will be bad or woke? not really, but it makes you wonder why they made that decision.
Well the reason could be what all are claiming or the team wasnt comfortable with the idea to continue the story. At the end of GoT he was a hunted man and thats a difficult position to write something with a huge climax like it was in GoT with the liberation of the island. The only place he could have went is the main land and thats under the control of the shogun. Thats an enemy he could not defeat nor reason with. Not much tension besides staying hidden from the samurai. So maybe they thought that its better to start a new story, at another time, in another part of japan and make it a good story than to continue an existing story, so the fans can be happy, but without the conviction to be able to make it good.
@@Mejandora What you just describes sounds like the samurai equivalent of Red Dead Redemption 2 and it sounds awesome. Not all 'good stories' have to end in victory. Ghost of Tsushima may not have been the most historically accurate, but it was straight-faced and uncompromising in it's vision of representating a scenario that could've occurred in that period. Ghost of Yotei meanwhile just looks like another Sony comic book game. It's premise, whilst not impossible, is inherently hard to swallow and that stuff is going to deter people from playing, whether consciously or subconsciously.

I’m an aspiring game dev, hopefully joining the industry after I finish my degree. My dream is to eventually run a studio that makes quality games with no agenda other than genuine fun and immersive gameplay. I want people to be able to be excited for games again.
It’s like you said. When presented with failure after failure, eventually we develop a sense for the signs that lead to said failures. We were conditioned over time to see the telltale ingredients of DEI and, even though one or two aren’t inherently bad when done well, we still initially recoil and brace for the worst because of what has happened before, which is justified. But we shouldn’t judge until we have sufficient information. However, even though we don’t know about Yotei too much, the game has a different team of devs with a different creative vision while the original talents behind Tsushima left. And usually when the original creators leave something, that tends to be a bad sign.
Game will be like BFV compared to BF1. Crazy to think that it’s been almost a decade since BF1. I wish people would get tired of this demoralization and start a full scale witch hunt against the perpetrators.
I saw the pic on Twitter/X where it showed all men on the left who worked on GoT, vs all women on the right who developed GoY. The contrast is quite apparent between the 2. And some of the women had brightly dyed hair, so we know that those at the very least are left leaning. All the devs that worked on GoT are gone. Sucker Punch has been taken over by women and they/thems just like Ubisoft. I have no hope nor high expectations for this game at all
Basically you guys have become zombies that are walking woke-dei detectors. No it won't because it's a female lead and Jin was male. Most of the player base is male. Most males would rather play as a male. This whole comment section and this channel reeks of right wing BS. Woke this woke that, DEI this and that. Like who cares. If the game is good the game is good. What's crazy is that they said AC Shadows, Star Wars Outlaws, Wukong, Dragon Age Veilguard, this new Ghost game, are all woke like wtf? When people start labeling videogames as woke because they don't like the game, you know you just stepped into Joe Rogan's talkshow.
What’s Act Man’s point? This backlash has been building for years. It’s not always going to be measured, and some people will take it too far into parody, as some always do. Those individuals only represent themselves. Highlighting that a few people called air conditioning racist doesn’t reflect the majority, and that level of absurdity hasn’t really changed anything. Calling someone racist today has about the same impact it did four years ago.
Act Man’s observation was pretty pointless. He’s judging people who share an opinion just because some take it too far, as if that invalidates everyone else. Apparently, BlackRock isn’t offering considerable financial incentives to studios for embracing forced diversity, DEI, and non-binary representation in entertainment-despite their own statements on the matter. It was all just our imagination.
I would have told him that the issue is not the word "woke", it's that no one is calling it for what it truly is "cultural marxism". Which is very real and is destroying the USA, never mind the planet.
You not see the picture of the developers at Sucker Punch for Tsushima vs for Yotei?? Yeah, I admit, I can't KNOW for sure. But if I was a bettin' man........ And let's be real, ActMan ain't the most courageous TH-camr out there. When TH-cam nuked his channel it put the fear of GOD in him. And he's toed the line ever since. I can't go to ActMan for an honest opinion. He'll always play it safe. But I admit that the MC for Ghost being a woman is not ENOUGH to KNOW that it's woke. But do you want to bet me that it's NOT Woke? Yeah, I didn't think you would.
Where’s the picture? Would be interesting to see it lol, the one for Ubisoft was funny. Love the nuance in your take on this. Making a sequel with a female lead isn't inherently bad, but gamers being wary after seeing a pattern does make some sense.
It's insanely tiring to keep having devs and media gaslight gamers as if we aren't smart enough to see how so many of these decisions are just straight pandering. The Dragon Age drama is a perfect example, there was no need to have a certain type of scars exist outside of the rest of the scars and that submenu. Putting as a separate top menu toggle was done deliberately to put it every ones face and to pander inclusivity. There would have been some backlash regardless, but it escalated so much more due to it's implementation.
These companies need to decide if representation actually matters. If no, then they need to cut the bullcrap. If yes, then these companies need to stop being surprised and butthurt when characters that are not representative of the actual audience get rejected.

It is funny to see that the two-polar business/political model described by Christina Sommers in her book "Who Stole Feminism?: How Women Have Betrayed Women" still work so well after 30 years. In addition to people like Dr. Sommers, now TH-camrs and streamers like Legendary Drops and Asmongold take the role to fight this beast with extremely long life bar and 2nd-3rd stages...
I feel like the ending of GoT left players thinking they would get a direct sequel to that game. Now that GoT 2 is going in a different direction, I think it left a lot of players feeling like they got the short end of the stick. This combined with a female lead and the amount of DEI in gaming now has got everyone’s guard up
Study the current roster of Sucker Punch. Compare it to the original team that made Ghost of Tsushima. Will alarm you greatly to this "modern game for modern audience".
Excellent, level-headed analysis of the situation and noise surrounding this game. Personally, I like the anthology approach to what will now be the Ghost series of games. I’ll wait to see what reviewers like ACG have to say about it before buying, but if the character is well conceived, the story is compelling, and the gameplay is just as good as GoT, I’ll check it out.
It's not only because they changed the beloved protagonist after just one game. My issue is Jin´s story was not even finished. The ending, without spoiling to much, is very open and already has builded a foundation for an interesting continuation of his story. So changing him now makes very little sense to me and yeah the fact they hired this strange woman makes this decision even more questionable. But i will give Atsu and her Actress Erika a fair chance. Hopefully they don't disappoint....
I get so pissed when anyone says Jin's story is over. No spoilers, but they literally CLEARLY set up a larger invasion, Jin's migration to Japan mainlands and the Shogun after him.

Diversity/inclusion is not at all inherently a good thing, its completely contextual. For example, racial or gender diversity in a medieval japanese setting that focuses on samurai warfare is bad. Most of the people should be japanese (or in the case of Tsushima, japanese and mongol), and most of the characters (if theyre mostly soldiers) should be men. Diversity would make it worse. On the other hand, in a setting taking place in modern San Francisco, diversity is good and necessary, otherwise it would look silly and not believable.

@@taco1957 Ok then, let me explain. It's not about diversity per se. It's about believable human behaviour. There are degrees to realism, and different weight should be put on different elements. Even if some concepts simply can't be translated from real life (like the way you physically fight), that doesn't mean some aspects that can be, shouldn't be. Things like changing outfits on the fly aren't very immersion breaking because they be explained as a "movie cut". I assume his new outfit didn't magically appear on his body but that he changed, i just didn't see it. I don't see him eating or going to the toilet either but i assume he does that when im "not looking". This has some immersion breaking effect, they could choose to show it, but it's very minimal. It's a good tradeoff of believablity for convenience. But IF his outfits did in fact magically appear out of thin air, by actual magic - that WOULD be ridiculous and i would question the logic of that in a otherwise fairly realistic game. Similarly, being able to heal wounds quickly is simply for the benefit of the gameplay, to make it more fun and/or easy to play, nothing more. (you can always add higher difficulties in a game) But we don't actually assume he is a nigh immortal superhuman - its just luck, skill, or "movie(game) magic". However, the most important aspect to keep as believable as possible, in any medium, is human behaviour. Also the way humans look, sound, etc., but especially how they behave. We are very familiar with humans, and they act as a grounding element so that we can suspend our disbelief of the more fantastical elements. When they are believable, it makes us better able to imagine what it would be like if this fantastic world was real - or imagine ourselves in it. Making humans act oddly and unrealistically doesn't bring any benefit to the gameplay, and we can't write it off as "movie magic" - it simply feels wrong. It's a BAD tradeoff to sacrifice realistic human behaviour for some other aspect - like story convenience, or ideology. If humans don't act believably, people usually call that bad writing. And that's what i don't want in games. Even in more fantasy games like Baldur's Gate 3, humans should behave like humans. And they don't. In that game, half of any army for example are women, and human women don't behave like that. So i end up wondering why? Do these humans have different brains to real humans? Different bodies? Women don't bear children in this world? Everything else about them seems to be the same - they look normal, sound normal. But they act oddly, like some human-like but alien race. Star Trek (the old, good ones) is very sci-fi, but humans still act like we would expect humans to act. In a setting where there are aliens that act weirdly, the humans are the ground and the point of comparison. So in some sense, you could argue that in fantasy or sci-fi with other intelligent species, it may be be even more important for humans to act believably. But certainly a game like Ghost of Tsushima, with fairly realistic world-building and setting, humans should behave believably. To me and i think most people, that's important, otherwise the world feels fake. Like the author is trying to shield me from the harsh reality of... well, reality. Like a cartoon that's made for a child. That or it's simply ideological. It's most likely a bit of both. To be clear, in Ghost of Tsushima it's still somewhat reasonable, there are much bigger offenders. It's just a bit of a stain on a otherwise good game. And i suspect the next game will have it much worse, but we can only wait and see.
Pattern recognition is why these developers no longer get the benefit of the doubt. Secondly, I really dont have much of a dog in this fight, but I did read some of the quotes from the mocap/voice actor for the new ghosts game, and I don't like the thought of her getting any of my money. I'm not going to support people who hate me because I have white skin and am a guy.
Really not trying to be an asshole cuz I frankly don’t agree with her statements on shit. I believe everyone should do better at understanding one another and any radical point of views whether from the left or right will always prevent that. However, she already got paid. More likely paid with profits from the previous release. The work done on this game from the VA side is already paid for and apart of the initial budget. The profits of this game would more likely go towards the budget of the next in the anthology.

11:49 Act Man is just wrong on this one. these incidents are actually INCREASING instead of people just overreacting, and Sony's catalogue is a big proof of that.
As a Hispanic man, I can’t stand western (mostly American) inclusivity arguments and solutions in the name of “helping minorities be better represented”. I didn’t ask for these people’s help and neither did most other cultures and minorities. Personally, I’ve always had a personal sentiment that there isn’t enough Hispanic representation outside of stereotypes in Hollywood and entertainment in general, given the size of the Hispanic population here in America. However, not only would I NOT like having an established, let’s say white (for sake of argument) character be replaced or “reimagined” by a Hispanic person, I would be outright pissed. What… Is my culture not good enough to have its own fresh and unfiltered take? I would hate to be represented as a replacement to an established character. True inclusivity would be creating an all new character in whatever industry that represents my culture, and I think most gamers are more than okay with that. I wish these justice “warriors” would get out of their own way to try and make it right for minorities. I don’t care who or what the character is as long is they’re intriguing and original. I don’t want to be represented by replacing a loved and established character-that’s cheap and honestly, insulting.
This is exactly what I think about the matter. Never had any problem with female roles or ones from other countries that are not western but the way they are replaced (like you said) nowadays is unbearable. This is the reason why I will never get into some black roles in recent LOTR adaptations. That is a fake facade. Why, are there not incredible stories and myths in Black Africa? Sure there are and plenty, too. But, of course, they don't sell. Let's make foolish and cheap representations, instead. For the record, I am playing a rare gem, masterfully done, called "Planet of Lana" with a female protagonist that feels like an authentic female protagonist with her weaknesses and strengths like any other human being in this little planet.
@@ArturoBandini-F exactly! Take the Resident Evil film series with Milla Jovovich. Who by the way was a total badass. I don’t recall anyone ever complaining that a woman was the lead actor. If anything, she was beloved by the RE fans, yet where were all these justice warriors supporting her? It’s all so fake and disingenuous. And when minorities are used as replacements, it’s so disrespectful to not only the writers and actors or characters, but also the “replacements”. It’s just a lose lose situation being sold as a righteous cause.
As I'll follow up with my own take: Anytime you see a race-swapped character, that's just Hollywood or for Gods sakes, any other Entertainment Company sweeping dust under the rug pretending to ignore the huge line of Black or Hispanic yearning to be in Director Roles, because they wanna save on money.
tbh bro, i'd rather have little but good representation than a lot of shitty one. and just saying, but when you can point at a movie like Desperado as your representation, you can pull the ladder, nobody will ever top it ;) Banderas is an absolute bad ass, Salma Hayek ... well is Salma Hayek, the action is the best you'll see next to John Woo in his prime, dialogs from Tarantino, ... if that's the representation we were given, i would throw my money at them and shove it in their pockets myself, but tbh even as a white guy i feel freakin' bad about how the woke are portraying "minorities" in their movies, black guys nowadays especially.
Jin Sakai’s story arc is essentially over. However i do see a hole where they could continue his story. I wrote my idea below. “Jin Sakai, after defeating the mongol invasion is now on the run from the shogunate. He heads to the mainland of Japan, leaving his home of trushima behind. There he learns of the corruption that has spread through the ruling body of Japan like a disease. As he cuts those of corruption down from the shadows, he learns that just removing the bad seeds would not mend the wounds of society. Soon things spiral out of control and he is forced to engage in a bloody war from the shadows. However those he must strike down hide behind a wall of innocents. With no other choices he fights through numerous bodies to remove those responsible. Now with many innocent lives having been taken by his sword he is questioning his actions. The seeds of corruption are gone but he is hollowed out inside. The weight of the choices hang heavy on his mind and he eventually gives up the sword. Swearing to never harm another innocent soul. After he recovers his mind he looks out at the society that has been left scared by his actions and decides to help once more. Not by way of the sword but by the way of the voice. Becoming a ruler, with the wisdom of his own mistakes guiding him into a better future for all of Japan.”

Compare that to sucker Punch who has had a VERY consistent track record of doing the exact opposite. Consistently putting out banger after banger and even recently with Ghost of tsushima you can look at how they handle a strong female co-lead.
@@nubbyfresh5623three points to consider:

Most of it ends up shallow.
The character can be male, female, nonbinary, whatever else, but whatever or whoever the character is identified as won't matter whatsoever if the character has as much depth as a puddle.

@MrDezokokotar Yes, women written by women are like men without responsibility and accountability. Of course that's always ugly.
@@MrDezokokotar
Your comment reminds me of all those nerdy protagonists like Peter Parker that got the babe in the end.

I've been making this argument to people dumping on people getting upset that the yotei protag was a "body type 2". Like perhaps theyre new to the whole thing, but you poke and poke and poke the bear, the bear will eventually consider you a threat, and will attack as soon as you lift your hand.

Mass Effect 2 had a point where I changed my position in an argument over it.

@@ganggang3788 just make a very masculine ham sandwich without women or lgbtq

@@namelessking9068SM2 isn't according to the woke spreadsheet.

Sometimes when I see these game journalists and what they're saying, I think, damn, maybe we should just stop game journalism all together.
A.I. will do that
this is why ive held the belief for years now that all journalism is evil, its inherent.
Did you see photo of dev teams for Tsushima and Yutei?
This has been my root reasoning.

I think doing more with Days Gone would be a good thing. I actually liked that game.
I would rather never see a sequel of DG than give Deacon St John the "sony treatment": getting replaced by a butch lesbian in the sequel.
The Last of Us, Joker, and now this. I'm almost convinced that money is not a problem for them.
Then you will call men sexist when the game doesn’t do well.
Ghost of Yotei meanwhile just looks like another Sony comic book game.

On the other hand, in a setting taking place in modern San Francisco, diversity is good and necessary, otherwise it would look silly and not believable.
why does a video game, an inherently fictional medium, need to be believable? the protagonist can mow down thousands of people or survive otherwise lethal falls, but a women out of time is where you draw the line?
@@taco1957 Im not sure what you mean by that. Can you explain what you mean by a video game being an "inherently fictional medium"?
A medium (video game, movie, book, oil painting) is neither fictional nor non-fictional, these terms dont apply to the concept.
@@MrDezokokotar @MrDezokokotar you're being intentionally naive.
obviously you recognize that video games (a medium) are by majority - works of fiction. a video game can try to be as non-fictional as it wants, but liberties must be made in almost all cases to make the actual act of playing it fun. there's nothing "historically accurate" about Jhin being able to change outfits on the fly, for example.
My question to you, is: why you draw a line between things like this only when it involves diversity?
(you can always add higher difficulties in a game)
But we don't actually assume he is a nigh immortal superhuman - its just luck, skill, or "movie(game) magic".

Hit the nail on the head.
As I'll follow up with my own take: Anytime you see a race-swapped character, that's just Hollywood or for Gods sakes, any other Entertainment Company sweeping dust under the rug pretending to ignore the huge line of Black or Hispanic yearning to be in Director Roles, because they wanna save on money.
tbh bro, i'd rather have little but good representation than a lot of shitty one.
and just saying, but when you can point at a movie like Desperado as your representation, you can pull the ladder, nobody will ever top it ;)
Banderas is an absolute bad ass, Salma Hayek ... well is Salma Hayek, the action is the best you'll see next to John Woo in his prime, dialogs from Tarantino, ...
if that's the representation we were given, i would throw my money at them and shove it in their pockets myself,
but tbh even as a white guy i feel freakin' bad about how the woke are portraying "minorities" in their movies, black guys nowadays especially.
If you need the protagonist of a game to look like you to enjoy it. The problem's not with the game. It's with you.
