Good morning! I have five minutes at Teasdale School in between students, so I've made a cup of tea (thank you Mrs McGrath for all the tea making material) and I just thought I would share the warm-up that we've been doing so far this morning.
So a few students have got sort of bits and bobs of colds and bugs they're recovering from. They've also all had auditions on Sunday, most of them, so their voices are a little bit tired. So this is a nice gentle warm-up, so feel free to join in. So we're going to do a nice little hum and we're doing what we call arpeggios, which is a cool word for a broken chord.
So we have the bottom note of the chord, middle note, top note, so we go all the way up then we go back down, and practicing going back the way you came is really good for singing because it helps with our agility and it helps us get to the steps that we want to first time round and all the way as well.
So sometimes when you think people are sort of singing out of tune, or you hear yourself and think 'oh not sure about that!' often you've just not gone either far enough or you've gone too far, which you know I do all the time in life! Singing's not too bad!
Okay, so here we are so... [Music] lovely okay so you notice me sort of maybe having a quizzical look, like this, as I got towards the the higher notes there. That's just me making sure that my sound is as as fat at the top as it is at the bottom. Because we're starting to change registers there, so we're starting to make more sound from this part of our voice, as opposed to this part of our voice - our chest.
So we need to give it more air as we get near the top, that's what I say all the time, 'give it more air!' Be generous with your air, it's free! So I'm just warming up myself, so I would like to give that another go and just see how fat I can make those sounds that are getting towards the middle of my vocal range. Okay, so here we are [Music], see that's much freer now.
Lovely, okay and that humming- it'll make a nice buzz in your throat and keep you nice and relaxed and you'll notice I started raising my eyebrows and started thinking about making sound in this part of my face and filling this out with lovely sound. Funny, that's a good relaxation exercise as well.
So you can try that one at home and let me know how you get on, any questions give me a shout and if you want to post a video of yourself doing it for what they call accountability i.e. so you know you've done it, or if you want a bit of feedback on it, feel free to do that as well.
All right, so I hope you have a lovely day and I will see you again soon.
