Hello Again!
I'm at Teesdale School again, it's very rainy here so you might hear some rain in the background because it's getting towards that sort of time, we had the Equinox, dark at 7:00 last night, getting all a bit gloomy.
But we're feeling very cozy in the singing room. I'm in a minor scales mood. So, minor scales- we don't do them often enough really, but they're an important part of pop music & jazz and they're the ones that sound a little bit moody.
So I'm going to show you a nice minor scales warmup that we've been doing today. One of my students was doing Sally's Song from The Nightmare Before Christmas which is very minor key and it's got a lot of these in it as I like to call them.
So this is a crescendo- starts quiet, gets louder. This is a diminuendo- starts loud, gets quieter. And it's our job to send our breath through at different speeds, so the louder you want your sound to be, the quicker you need to send the air through.
You still need loads of air for everything- always- but that we we want to move the air through at different speeds to keep life interesting. So this is a little prep for that, so it goes like [Music] this.
Okay, so we've got a slide up from the bottom note to the top note it's a five note distance it's called a fifth. It's a perfect fifth, you know we we're told not to chase perfection- it doesn't exist. Well it does in music! Okay, it's called a perfect fifth just because it's the same in the major and the minor, that's it. So it's it's a flexible fifth really, and it's very useful.
So we [Music] go, so the air is going faster and faster and we're starting quieter and getting louder, then coming down. We want to slide through that because that's really helpful for our tuning, and it's just fun to slide around because we can!
Then coming down we're being a bit more precise and we're taking the steps down the minor scale and then a nice long note at the end. So we're coming down step by step to work on our tuning, our minor tuning to get that nice and accurate.
So we'll do that one more [Music] time, and you can repeat that all over the piano. That one was in A minor, which is a fun one um but there's lots of different minors.
We've got D [Music] minor and you can move up and down the scale and and enjoy that one, as it's perfect for the spooky gloomy weather.
