The short version was made so it could be played on AM radio, same as The Doors 'Light my Fire' , Iron Butterfly 'In a Gadda Da Vida, Led Zepplin 'Whole lot of Love' ELP 'Fanfare for a Common Man' to name a few. Years and years of playing tunes that were 3min 30 sec and when they were released you would hear the tune at least once an hour if not more for as long it was on the charts. Playing anything on AM radio over 4 mins was almost uncalled for. FM, at least here in Southern Ontario , was mainly classical music in the early 70's and was until 74-77 that FM stations started playing rock. And unlike the FM stations of today, stations would play 15+ min tunes or entire album sides

CCR had their own sound that no one ever duplicated and never made a bad song. Each one is worthy and awesome. Also, the full-length version has some of John Fogerty's best guitar work.

The first time I heard this song was in Danang Vietnam in 1969. A friend came into my hooch at About 7:00 am and tells me he found a new song on the jukebox in the EM club that I needed to hear. So we went on down and put some coins in the machine and listened to it about 6 times in a row.
In 67 I was in the EM club in Catania Sicily and the band played this every night. And some nights they had a burlesque type dancer. So pretty and I had a crush on her. Time of the ship USS Liberty and the Six Day War in the mideast. They played at the base theater "The Good The Bad and The Ugly" every day, saw it 13 times in a row.... many more since then. 🤠
John Fogerty's label colleague Merl Saunders heard this on the car radio when he was on tour. He didn't know about Creedence's new band name but he knew John's singing voice. So he was like, "I dunno who this Creedence is, but that's John singing it!"
CCR was basically a hits factory in the late 60s/early 70s. Glad you hit this one. Wish you had hit the 8½ minute full version - funkier/bluesier. Cheers....

I had Sweet Hitchhiker in a 45 when I was a kid, I can't remember what the B side was. How about Up Around The Bend, with Run Through The Jungle for the B side (I have that 45 now).

I remember being stationed in Singapore (New Zealand army) in the mid 80's. This was the go to song to play for the bar girls to dance too! We had a lot of Vietnam vets still in our army in those days, it was like reliving their R&R days in Bangkok ... We'd play these songs for the girls in Thailand to dance too, great days.

For more of that, try these tracks: "The Working Man", "Get Down Woman", "Penthouse Pauper", "Tombstone Shadow", "Feelin' Blue", and "Graveyard Train". Those are straight-up bluesy. And for Amber, this groovy sound is all over their deeper cuts. For CCR with a bit of psych influence, check out "Gloomy" and "Walk on the Water". You will not be disappointed by any of these tracks. And please, always look for the full-length tracks. "Suzie Q" is really over 8 minutes long, and if you loved the guitar on the shorter version, you'll really love it on the longer version where they really stretch the jam out.

Jay and Amber, you should revisit this song. The album version actually goes on for another few minutes with lots of guitar soloing. Susie Q and I Put A Spell On You were as close to psychedelia as CCR got. For good down and dirty CCR blues you should check out Get Down Woman.
I have a core memory of this song from childhood around maybe 1978. I lived in Charlton, MA and our driveway was all broken and full of holes and dirt. There were some black-eyed susans growing in them and this song popped into my head making me happy because my mother’s name is Susan. It’s silly, but I ALWAYS think of that when the song or the flower comes to my attention.

My father is a Korean War Veteran, and he was introduced to Creedence by my Cousin Sammy who was a Vietnam Veteran. They would get together and would play this album all the time. I was 12 years old at the time. My father would always play 11:00 minutes of I Heard it through the Grapevine. by Creedence. Love Creedence Now! Great Memories.

Both times he put on a phenomenal show. I love the way he changes the songs when he does them live. What did you like about his live show? An all-time FAVORITE! There was actually a dance that went with this song, too. ❤ EDIT: The "sound" you mentioned is to replicate singing through a megaphone like singers did in the 1920's & 30's. In fact, the dance I mentioned above was a little bit "flapper-like".

I don't know anyone who doesn't love Credence Clearwater, so many legendary songs. I know it's not an original, but I reckon they do the best version of heard it through the grapevine. Long as I can see the light is superb and one of my favourite not so commercial songs is Mollina, I just love the dirty sax in that one.
We rolled up the rug, moved the furniture outside, (but kept the huge stereo in) and danced to this album at every party in the late sixties...summer in so Cal was fun back then. 👍❤🤙
This was CCR's first national hit reaching #11 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1968. This was just before they adopted the more swampy sound of their later records. This was originally written and recorded by Dale Hawkins in the 50's.
When this song came on at a party, out came the “smokes” and everyone fell back into the music. The long version was definitely the most popular. But several other songs by Led Zep, Steppenwolf and others were on that soundtrack of our lives.
Dang I just LOVE CCR.. Grew up with my Dad playing them and that's where I got my love of their music from and continued into adulthood for me!! Their swampy bluesy sound I'm in love with.. One band I wouldve love to see live..
Grew up with CCR, My dad’s favorite band! I knew every song growing up in the 1980’s! Born in 1972. CCR is from California and recorded all of their swamp rock Louisiana songs having never stepped foot in Cajun Country!

In the Army, back in 69.....me and my buddies cruising in my new Firebird. 8 track cranked and blast'in CCR. All the tracks were great.....but Choog'lin was our favorite. In 3 weeks.....we all got our orders. That was the last time we were all together....and young. CCR still brings back good memories.
I was lucky to have 13 aunts and uncles when I was a kid who knew I loved music and would buy me 45 rpm singles for my little phonograph for Christmas and birthday gifts. I got a copy of Dale Hawkins original version of this when I was about 9 years old. It was one my favorites. Years later I was in the Navy when CCR's first album came out. I listened to it with my roommate and said to my roomate "Old time rock & roll is back!" I loved every song on it, both the originals and the covers. This is among their best covers, but there were no bad ones.
TheHREAT of a steamy summer afternoon on the Bayou jumps out at you here. Filthy Bassline, minimal on Point vocals and the guitar speaks to you. You need a shower after all the funk, but what a treat!!! Love it……..
It's that analog sound from that era. It's so rich, you get bathed in it. I love when bands manipulate the levels. There was definitely a sonic touch of The Doors in some of the tones and vibe. It's such a perfectly conceived, produced, and executed music by CCR. Watching you both get immersed in the music, your dance moves, Jay you were the base to Amber's treble. So glad you both like the song.
I was 11 years old when I bought this 45 record. Side B was the rest of the song which is mostly instrumental. Great choice today. Love you guys, keep up the great work!
They have so many more sounds than this that you guys haven't heard yet. But this was off that first debut album, again one of the great debut albums. You guys would love anything off of it. But definitely check out Penthouse Pauper. It's a storytelling thing with a punchline at the end, but it's in the style of older Blues. On the other hand, it's incredibly funky, and the guitar work on it just slashes. His voice is incredible. It's filled with blues and soul and it's so biting. I love everything about this song and I remember when I heard it in high school and I had had two of their later albums but I'd never had this one although I knew a couple songs from it. I went out and bought the vinyl this and start playing it and I just loved it so much. Especially this song. And you didn't comment on it, but to me my favorite part of this in a lot of ways is that bass guitar line. It's the interplay between all four of the elements that gives it that groovy feel that still sounds like Creedence.

Bands back then were expected to mix it up a bit musically. Not like today's one trick ponies. One of the reasons I still listen to all that old stuff.
I'm 69 and have been listening to this song since I was 17 yesterday old. I've never thought of it before, but I think when his voice switch, that it was because he was acting like he was on the phone talking to her.
When I was younger, (I’m 32), there was a 90’s tv Disney movie called Susie Q, played by Kimberly the pink Power Ranger from the original US show, Power Rangers. This song by CCR, as you can imagine, was it’s theme song.
My Dad's favorite group. My Parents saw them a lot back in the 60s. As well as Janis, Jimi,Santana and The Grateful Dead in San Francisco and the Bay Area.

A couple years ago a couple of us were skiing when my partner fell and cracked her tibia. Ski patrol got her down to their center, with me following shortly thereafter. I parked outside and left the car running with a CCR Greatest Hits CD running. thinking that it would be only a few minutes before we left. Shortly after I arrived, they wanted something that was out in the car, and the youngest of the patrol ladies went out to get it. It took her a half-hour to finally come back, with her eyes wide open. "Who is that band playing in your car? They are incredible!!". And a new CCR fanatic was born that afternoon..... :)
John Fogerty used a megaphone to get that trebly sound on his vocal to get more of a psychedelic sound, and like another viewer stated, please listen (and re-review) the original long version of Susie Q for us. I agree the short version is almost criminal! Note: John Fogerty years later stated that he wished that he hadn’t used the Megaphone on that part of the song. Personally, I like it!

They were really only from '67-'72, which is amazing in itself - and so many refer to them in the present tense.

@@Roh_Echt That's awesome! I've seen Jonny Lang twice now, but both times were in more recent years. I saw him once in Vegas around 2011 or so, and then in California like five years ago. Both times he put on a phenomenal show. I love the way he changes the songs when he does them live. What did you like about his live show? Also, what is the first song you would suggest for Jordan and Amber to listen to from Lang?

EDIT: The "sound" you mentioned is to replicate singing through a megaphone like singers did in the 1920's & 30's. In fact, the dance I mentioned above was a little bit "flapper-like".

Another good CCR song and love how you reacted. Sure wish you’d come around to “Ramble Tamble.” You haven’t heard Fogerty at his best until you have listened to his blistering solo on this song. Oh, well, maybe next time.
Great song, but I think his guitar on 'Keep on Chooglin' is better. How about Penthouse Pauper? Another killer guitar. Nobody mentions that one.

This was CCR's foray into the "psychedelia" sound.
I first heard this song in about 1969...While rolling down the I-10 freeway, just before the 610 loop, in Houston, Texas!
This song by CCR was used in Apocalypse Now, iconic Vietnam movie.
I don't know anyone who doesn't love Credence Clearwater, so many legendary songs. I know it's not an original, but I reckon they do the best version of heard it through the grapevine. Long as I can see the light is superb and one of my favourite not so commercial songs is Mollina, I just love the dirty sax in that one.
We rolled up the rug, moved the furniture outside, (but kept the huge stereo in) and danced to this album at every party in the late sixties...summer in so Cal was fun back then. 👍❤🤙

My favorite CCR song.
This was CCR's first national hit reaching #11 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1968. This was just before they adopted the more swampy sound of their later records. This was originally written and recorded by Dale Hawkins in the 50's.
When this song came on at a party, out came the “smokes” and everyone fell back into the music. The long version was definitely the most popular. But several other songs by Led Zep, Steppenwolf and others were on that soundtrack of our lives.

This was their remake of an earlier song. They definitely tinkered with the stereo sound on this song. This was kinda the sound at that time.
Dang I just LOVE CCR.. Grew up with my Dad playing them and that's where I got my love of their music from and continued into adulthood for me!! Their swampy bluesy sound I'm in love with.. One band I wouldve love to see live..

Grew up with CCR, My dad’s favorite band! I knew every song growing up in the 1980’s! Born in 1972. CCR is from California and recorded all of their swamp rock Louisiana songs having never stepped foot in Cajun Country!
This is definitely the song for the highway drive. Something about that pace just takes over when you're driving.
This was their first big hit. And I became a big fan immediately! And I’m 75 now and still a big fan!

In the Army, back in 69.....me and my buddies cruising in my new Firebird. 8 track cranked and blast'in CCR. All the tracks were great.....but Choog'lin was our favorite. In 3 weeks.....we all got our orders. That was the last time we were all together....and young. CCR still brings back good memories.
CCR was a huge part of my early years, from 9 to 62 and counting. You can't go wrong with them and they had no bad songs!

I was lucky to have 13 aunts and uncles when I was a kid who knew I loved music and would buy me 45 rpm singles for my little phonograph for Christmas and birthday gifts. I got a copy of Dale Hawkins original version of this when I was about 9 years old. It was one my favorites.
Years later I was in the Navy when CCR's first album came out. I listened to it with my roommate and said to my roomate "Old time rock & roll is back!" I loved every song on it, both the originals and the covers. This is among their best covers, but there were no bad ones.
TheHREAT of a steamy summer afternoon on the Bayou jumps out at you here. Filthy Bassline, minimal on Point vocals and the guitar speaks to you. You need a shower after all the funk, but what a treat!!! Love it……..

There was definitely a sonic touch of The Doors in some of the tones and vibe. It's such a perfectly conceived, produced, and executed music by CCR.

I was 11 years old when I bought this 45 record. Side B was the rest of the song which is mostly instrumental. Great choice today. Love you guys, keep up the great work!
They have so many more sounds than this that you guys haven't heard yet. But this was off that first debut album, again one of the great debut albums. You guys would love anything off of it. But definitely check out Penthouse Pauper.
It's a storytelling thing with a punchline at the end, but it's in the style of older Blues. On the other hand, it's incredibly funky, and the guitar work on it just slashes. His voice is incredible. It's filled with blues and soul and it's so biting.
I love everything about this song and I remember when I heard it in high school and I had had two of their later albums but I'd never had this one although I knew a couple songs from it. I went out and bought the vinyl this and start playing it and I just loved it so much. Especially this song.
And you didn't comment on it, but to me my favorite part of this in a lot of ways is that bass guitar line. It's the interplay between all four of the elements that gives it that groovy feel that still sounds like Creedence.

Bands back then were expected to mix it up a bit musically. Not like today's one trick ponies. One of the reasons I still listen to all that old stuff.

I'm 69 and have been listening to this song since I was 17 yesterday old. I've never thought of it before, but I think when his voice switch, that it was because he was acting like he was on the phone talking to her.
When I was younger, (I’m 32), there was a 90’s tv Disney movie called Susie Q, played by Kimberly the pink Power Ranger from the original US show, Power Rangers. This song by CCR, as you can imagine, was it’s theme song.
My Dad's favorite group. My Parents saw them a lot back in the 60s. As well as Janis, Jimi,Santana and The Grateful Dead in San Francisco and the Bay Area.

You'll have to listen to the extended version of this song and "Heard it Thru the Grapevine"! Fogerty's guitar work REALLY stands out in these versions!!

Had this on LP and wore it out so much so I still hear the scratches & pops as if they were part of the recording.
This is the first CCR song I ever heard. Came out when I was about 16. (I'm old.) From then on, I was hooked on John Fogerty's voice and rhythms.
This is the age of stereo in the 70s so many Sounds from 1 ear to the other It used to be mono And sometimes they still do
We had music going during gymnastic practice and this is one of the songs we heard all the time
A couple years ago a couple of us were skiing when my partner fell and cracked her tibia. Ski patrol got her down to their center, with me following shortly thereafter. I parked outside and left the car running with a CCR Greatest Hits CD running. thinking that it would be only a few minutes before we left. Shortly after I arrived, they wanted something that was out in the car, and the youngest of the patrol ladies went out to get it. It took her a half-hour to finally come back, with her eyes wide open. "Who is that band playing in your car? They are incredible!!".
And a new CCR fanatic was born that afternoon..... :)
John Fogerty used a megaphone to get that trebly sound on his vocal to get more of a psychedelic sound, and like another viewer stated, please listen (and re-review) the original long version of Susie Q for us. I agree the short version is almost criminal! Note: John Fogerty years later stated that he wished that he hadn’t used the Megaphone on that part of the song. Personally, I like it!
