Where I live we very rarely get hurricanes just winter storms, so the thought that you lead your lives with this type of regular occurrence in your background is frightening. CCR was one of the best bands of the era. It always gets me when he sings "Comin' down on a sunny day" in that lower, almost resigned-sounding tone at 5:11 of this video. He sounds almost sad, and given that this song is about how he can see CCR as they are beginning to break up, I can see why.

They have a song called Lodi, which is about a singer traveling around and playing in bars, hoping he'll be "discovered". It's a great song, but melancholy in it's tone. Definitely one of their most classic tunes though.
We live near Lodi. It is a quiet town with great wineries. Great restaurants. Relaxed atmosphere. Stuck in Lodi Again is of course a favorite for me because I wouldn’t mind being stuck there for a week.

I grew up on the great music of the 60's-70's. CCR has always been one of my favorites. They don't have a bad song! John Fogerty has one of the most unique & recognizable voices around.
There are so many good CCR songs. You can’t go wrong with any of them. Growing up, I used to select “Long As I Can See The Light” on the jukebox many, many times.
There are lots of explanations for what John means when he sings about the rain. My favorite is that rain was what GIs called incoming fire in Vietnam.

Why? They helped define the genre. What, a person can't sing Opera unless they are from x can't sing country unless they are from y, can't sing etc. Where a person lives shouldn't determine what they play. CCR pioneers of southern rock.

Another great example of this juxtaposition is The Band, who outside of Levon, were all Canadian, but many still considered their sound to be southern rock. I guess that begs the bigger question, does it all need to be quantified? I just dig good music...
@@stanlanier7640 Southern Rock is a genre. It has a distinct sound. Sorta like Island music, Jamaica music. You know it when you hear it, and you can be in a land locked state and make Island Jamaica music. Southern Rock sounds like CCR, Lynard Skynard, .38 Special, etc. Anyone that disqualifies CCR just because of their location doesn't believe Southern Rock is a genre I guess, and takes it to mean any type of rock in the deep south and deep south only. I guess a heavy metal band that is based out of Alabama is Southern Rock by that definition.
The guys in CCR are originally from California. They went through numerous name changes before settling on CCR, named after a town and a beer commercial. Their first song in the top 40s was Brown Eyed Girl, under the name The Golywogs. They never did drugs and they stayed away from the Rock and Roll life style. One of my favorite songs of all time. It's just a perfectly crafted song. It hooks you in right away with that guitar riff, then it hits you hard right in the soul when the lyrics start, then it ends without overstaying its welcome. The vibe, the cadence, the timbre of Fogerty's voice, everything about the song is perfect, it's like a masterclass on how to write a hit song.
My favorite CCR song. My second is "Lookin' Out My Back Door", which I hope you will do next. And it's cool that you only did two today. Just do four tomorrow. :) And as for your Southern Rock comment, I would definitely put Lynyrd Skynyrd in that category as well... you have to do "Sweet Home Alabama" at some point!!

I can relate I was Raised in Kodiak Alaska in the mid 60s to late 70s I Moved back to Astoria Oregon in the late 70s with my family ,, So i have spent many days in the Rain , And I LOVE IT LOL

I've heard this song live twice. Once in early 2000s, and once just pre-pandemic (dude's still got it). I can tell you, when this song comes on, it's almost magical. The crowd sings along and does lighters/phones. Amazing!

I was in a couple of rock bands in the 60s. I played all kinds of music. I’m 73 now and don’t play my guitar much anymore but when I do, I grab my Fender and belt out a CCR tune.
Hi guys. CCR started with 3 of the guys meeting in Jr High. They got to be friends and decided to start a band. That was in (I think) 1959. They were a trio and played mostly instrumentals. They also used to be the back up band for John Fogerty's brother Tom who later joined the band. They had a few names and finally ended up with the CCR name in like 67 or 68. You should give Skynyrd's "Gimme three steps" a listen.
I was just out of high school and we'd drive over to the City (San Francisco) and go to to a concert. It was such an amazing time to see Santana, Janis Joplin with Big Brother, and CCR in one night. They were so young, but so were we.
When I was a kid we lived in New Mexico where it rained while the sun was shining. This song always takes me back to that time - 50 years ago playing in the rain, not knowing there were places where the rain was cold.

Specifically, brother and fellow band member, Tom, left the group in 1971 just before the release of this song. Rain is a metaphor for sadness.

The funny thing to me is I grew up always hearing Ike and Tina Proud Mary I thought CCR was the was the cover until the mid 80's.

They have a song called Lodi, which is about a singer traveling around and playing in bars, hoping he'll be "discovered". It's a great song, but melancholy in it's tone. Definitely one of their most classic tunes though.

We live near Lodi. It is a quiet town with great wineries. Great restaurants. Relaxed atmosphere. Stuck in Lodi Again is of course a favorite for me because I wouldn’t mind being stuck there for a week.
CCR: John Fogerty, Doug Clifford, and Stu Cook met at Portola Junior High School in El Cerrito, California. John's older brother Tom is the 4th member of the group. Their origins are the East Bay subregion of the San Francisco Bay Area.

I grew up on the great music of the 60's-70's. CCR has always been one of my favorites. They don't have a bad song! John Fogerty has one of the most unique & recognizable voices around.

There are lots of explanations for what John means when he sings about the rain. My favorite is that rain was what GIs called incoming fire in Vietnam.
I also heard it referring to napalm or Agent Orange.

John himself said it’s about the band and their impending breakup. Things seemed sunny for the band on the surface as they were topping charts, but behind the scenes things were not good.

Creedence Clearwater Revival: Cotton Fields. I remember partying at a friend's place and this song was on repeat until EVERYONE sang it at the top of their lungs.

His dad grew up in the Deep South and passed it on to his kids! A lot of people left the south to find better jobs during the Great Depression.
@@catofthecastle1681 just like a lot of our folk came, my family came from Oklahoma. My husbands family came to work in the Richmond shipyards. My father in law worked at the shipyard, but later in life was a owner of his plumbing business who would do work for Tom Fogerty

I'm 66, been a Fogarty fan since I was 14. I always get chills when I hear CCR.
It is so funny to me, being a Georgia boy, through the years hearing this group of Northern California musicians described as playing Southern Rock.
Why? They helped define the genre. What, a person can't sing Opera unless they are from x can't sing country unless they are from y, can't sing etc. Where a person lives shouldn't determine what they play. CCR pioneers of southern rock.

Another great example of this juxtaposition is The Band, who outside of Levon, were all Canadian, but many still considered their sound to be southern rock. I guess that begs the bigger question, does it all need to be quantified? I just dig good music...

@@stanlanier7640 Southern Rock is a genre. It has a distinct sound. Sorta like Island music, Jamaica music. You know it when you hear it, and you can be in a land locked state and make Island Jamaica music. Southern Rock sounds like CCR, Lynard Skynard, .38 Special, etc. Anyone that disqualifies CCR just because of their location doesn't believe Southern Rock is a genre I guess, and takes it to mean any type of rock in the deep south and deep south only. I guess a heavy metal band that is based out of Alabama is Southern Rock by that definition.
The guys in CCR are originally from California. They went through numerous name changes before settling on CCR, named after a town and a beer commercial. Their first song in the top 40s was Brown Eyed Girl, under the name The Golywogs. They never did drugs and they stayed away from the Rock and Roll life style. "The Old Man Down The Road" by John Fogarty (solo) is a must-listen, along with the oft-mentioned Centerfield.
One of my favorite songs of all time. It's just a perfectly crafted song. It hooks you in right away with that guitar riff, then it hits you hard right in the soul when the lyrics start, then it ends without overstaying its welcome. The vibe, the cadence, the timbre of Fogerty's voice, everything about the song is perfect, it's like a masterclass on how to write a hit song.
My favorite CCR song. My second is "Lookin' Out My Back Door", which I hope you will do next. And it's cool that you only did two today. Just do four tomorrow. :) And as for your Southern Rock comment, I would definitely put Lynyrd Skynyrd in that category as well... you have to do "Sweet Home Alabama" at some point!!

From El Cerrito, CA, they played Bay Area clubs & bars as 'The Golliwogs' for a while until they landed a record deal, changed their name to CCR, and took off. They've got a great song called "Lodi" about the frustration of playing gig after gig in dives.

Having lived the majority of my adult life in Seattle I can honestly say that I have indeed "seen the rain comin' down on a sunny day". It happens quite frequently, actually.
So true... I've heard that it rains around 300 days a year in Seattle!
I can relate I was Raised in Kodiak Alaska in the mid 60s to late 70s I Moved back to Astoria Oregon in the late 70s with my family ,, So i have spent many days in the Rain , And I LOVE IT LOL
It happened in the spring in Northern California where they and I am from, too (not as often as Seattle I’m sure).
First time I heard this song was with my dad as we were going home and the radio was on and I would hear Have you ever seen rain and I would look at my dad and say yeah but have you ever seen a chocolate cake as it was my birthday that day and I was turning six and mom was baking me one.
John Fogerty also wrote Rockin' all over the world, a massive hit for Status Quo, who opened Live Aid with it.
Still love the fact that Status Quo opened that gig. and would have had hundreds of thousands of Americans watching, scratching their heads wondering who the hell this band was :)

I've heard this song live twice. Once in early 2000s, and once just pre-pandemic (dude's still got it). I can tell you, when this song comes on, it's almost magical. The crowd sings along and does lighters/phones. Amazing!

I was in a couple of rock bands in the 60s. I played all kinds of music. I’m 73 now and don’t play my guitar much anymore but when I do, I grab my Fender and belt out a CCR tune.

Hi guys. CCR started with 3 of the guys meeting in Jr High. They got to be friends and decided to start a band. That was in (I think) 1959. They were a trio and played mostly instrumentals. They also used to be the back up band for John Fogerty's brother Tom who later joined the band. They had a few names and finally ended up with the CCR name in like 67 or 68. You should give Skynyrd's "Gimme three steps" a listen.
This is probably one of CCRs best songs that I absolutely love. One of if not my best pick from them. They have so many. It’s hard to choose.

I was just out of high school and we'd drive over to the City (San Francisco) and go to to a concert. It was such an amazing time to see Santana, Janis Joplin with Big Brother, and CCR in one night. They were so young, but so were we.
When I was a kid we lived in New Mexico where it rained while the sun was shining. This song always takes me back to that time - 50 years ago playing in the rain, not knowing there were places where the rain was cold.

According to John Fogarty's autobiography, he wrote "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" (1972) to express his frustration at the disintegration of his band, Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR). Specifically, brother and fellow band member, Tom, left the group in 1971 just before the release of this song. Rain is a metaphor for sadness.

As an antiwar protester in the Viet Nam era, I loved CCR and their antiwar songs. I love your reactions to the music of my youth, we had some of the best artists and music of all time.
