thank you Davie for this nice fly. i had a very good luck fishing for steelhead in new york. it's my favorite nymph. i tied it in few colors but the orange worked the best. u r the man
Another great fly Davie. Keep posting them especially now when it`s grey and rainy outside. Can`t wait to see you tying a Polish woven nymphs. Cheers mate.
Hello Davie. Thanks for your feedback. We are having a good season down here in Patagonia. But the best is still to come, because the big brown trouts will start migrating upstream in April. Im talking about the Limay river to be precise. Your tips on how to fish with nymphs are really helpful. What you say about caddis moving upwards very fast in order to hatch makes sense and explains why I had good catches when retreaving the line. Thanks again for your time and all the best. Yours Fernando
This is an excellent pattern. It has become my go to nymph. I fish for trout in Western Pennsylvania, USA and I fish it with another larger nymph and it is usually the first fly to get hit. Thanks.
Great looking fly Davie! Had a disapointing day on the Spey. It was a rotton fishing day and no fish were taken. Superb pattern as usual Davie, Keep the videos coming!!!! Tight Lines, ~David
Really like your videos and the way you take your time explaining things, I have just returned to fly tying after 20 years, now the brown trout season is over, I plan to tie nymphs for using French leader style, this one will be among them for sure, Thanks
Dave, another beautiful fly, I am 30 years, military retired, and disabled from combat injuries, last 3 combat tours as a convoy gunner, lost commander, soldiers, and too many coalition friends. I 2008, I connected-up with a PROJECT HEALING WATERS chapter, and developed trout fever, learned casting, fishing, and tying my own flies. I now have had 8 surgeries, and getting ready for my 9th, which is a second left shoulder surgery. I want to get back to tying, and found you as my incredible teacher. There is so much more that I need to learn. Dave, for my own curiosity, do you ever sell any of your flies? I have always loved tying very small flies, nymphs, midges, etc. Thank you for your contributions, MSG Leum
Hi Davie! Thanks for a lift. I'm getting better every day and my flies look much better. I'm still have a problem with placing pheasant tail fibres around the body but i think it's because i'm out of fibres long enough. Thanks again, take care :)
These flies are absolute killers. And if you make the thorax out of violet or purple ice dubbing . . . you'll be laughing. The grayling woun't know what hit'em :D. All the best, Tudor!
I have been watching these videos, and even though I have never went flyfishing... I know have this sudden urge to make these lures. XD I miss my old tackle box...
I remember watching this. I still have a few in my fly box. I did not obviously leave a comment behind, so I am now. Have I been following you for that long? Oh Lord Davie, I think it's been longer. I don't remember what the first pattern I saw you tie was. I think one from 13 years ago. So I've finally left my comment at 0600 hrs on Sept 13, 2022
Davie what do you use to get that light pink coloured one? i really like the look of that but cant get anything like it. btw great work love all your videos my entire fly box is my own flies with most been products or adaptations of your videos thanks i have had some tasty yorkshire trout to thank you for.
Nice pattern. I use this fly in many variants in the river of Lower Silesia (Poland). Could you tell me what is the other material for the dubbing (the black one, that you're only showing on this video)? Kind regards from Poland, Arek
Hi Davie, Fantastic videos! I have only recently taken up fly fishing and even more recently tying and I'm learning a lot. I'm just going to stick to the 'classic' nymph patterns for now and go from there. I have a question - when using my bobbin holder and winding on thread or wire, I get a small tingling sound when the thread is under tension - is this normal? It doesn't seem smooth like in your videos. I use a Dr Slick ceramic bobbin holder. Keep up the superb work and thanks a lot,
Hello Davie, thank you for sharing your great patterns and fly tying skills. I have been enjoying learning to tie, watching your videos and the the videos of other excellent tiers. What sizes do you typically tie this pattern with. By the size of your fingers in comparison to the hook, I am guessing 16/18 ? Thanks again. Tight lines.. Douglas
Hi Davie. I´m from Argentina. You´re a kind of fly-tying hero for me and a bunch of friends down here. I have a question regarding how to fish with this pattern and nymphs in general. I normally cast upstream and let it drift freely. But, to my surprise, the best catches (and most of them) occurr when I am retrieving the line. This fact puzzles me and can´t find an answer. Do trouts find the nymph behaving like a small streamer? That goes against the book, but....I have no clue.Thanks. Fernando
Hi amartyarts, I've tyed this pattern on many sizes from 20s upwards, I would say though 14s and 16s have worked best for me... All the very best Davie...
Thanks Davie, indeed this pattern is a killer fly, so far I had no day without catching a fish with this pattern, even in the deepest Caucasus river! Thank you for sharing and a must have fly in the box! kind regards Marcin
Hi, Davie! I,m from Lithuania (neighbour country of Poland) and this video is absolutely super! I`m tying and fishing grayling with the same nymphs, but i didn`t thought how easy it is tyed. Thank you a lot! I would like to ask a question if i can. For legs imitation i`m using a cock feather without fibers on one side of the feather and i do a couple of wraps. Isn`t the cock feather too stiff for leg imitation for fly like this? P.S. Sorry for my english :)
Thank You, Davie, for Your reply, i realy appreciate it a lot! Now i tied a bunch of these flies after i saw this Your tye and i`m waiting for grayling season start in Lithuania. And, if i could, if it isn`t to impudent, i`d like to ask You a question - maybe You could share how to tye streamers for truot in early spring (when the rivers are full of water after winter) - maybe a woolley bugger, a muddler, a zonker or something. Thank You again for Your comment. Once again, sorry for my eglish :)
Davie, the pink version, is that utc shell pink or uni pink? The wire I presume is red utc ultra wire and possibly fox squirrel mix at the thorax?? Thanks Ali
Hi Ali, I used UTC Shell Pink and UTC X-Small Red Wire on the pink version as you said and fox squirrel is one of my favourite natural dubbings so you have the dressing.. All the very best Davie
hi davie i was wondering could you use cock fibres as a substitute for the legs instead of pheasant tail because im finding the pheasant tail hard to get Luke hogan
I see u sent a link to someone about a lamp on this video I've been on the look out for one any chance u could send on to me 2 tks for all your time Davie it's very much appreciated
Hi patrick mc earthy, I have attached a link to the lamp I would recommend as it's great value for the money, I wish it was around when I first started tying... All the very best Davie www.maplin.co.uk/p/22w-fluorescent-daylight-magnifier-lamp-a29ff?gclid=CInl7N_R3MoCFYMewwodDAYLhw
Wow, it looks so easy... But it's not. I'm newbie in flyfishing and flytying. Just spent 3hours in my workshop to tie few PT's. And they look like... nevermind. Anyway, thanks for upload. Greetings from Poland, Marcin.
Thanks for sharing Davie.
Good morning, Davie. A simple and very effective fly. His explanation is very bright. Greetings from Argentina.

17 brown trout on this yesterday. Fished a bit behind a caravan park and people where cheering and clapping as I was catching them.
Well done Jim....ATB Davie..
Thanks for posting this. I short-line nymph and these work great, but I wanted to tie my own! Your video helped me do just that!!
These flies are absolute killers. And if you make the thorax out of violet or purple ice dubbing . . . you'll be laughing. The grayling woun't know what hit'em :D.

We call this “Brązka” which means that this fly is in brown colour :)

I love this!
What is the advantage to the Polish pheasant tail nymph or when do you fish it ?
on hook No.16 is a good fly for roach
The flies look like killers Davie I am going to be tying a buch of them for sure.
Had a pheasant tail didnt know what to do with it needed some nymph's thanks!
Lovely little fly davie. What would be the best way to fish this pattern? Down stream, upstream or czech nymph / bugging?
Awesome tie! Are they doing these up with painted beads as well?
Jon

Bruce
@DavieMcPhail Hea I'm just starting out on this whole fly fishing stuff, and was woundering if you need the eyes for when you make flies.
Hi Davie,
Nice pattern i'm sure that fish a lot, I wonder what is the hook size
Thanks
What can I substitute for dubbing wax? I would have to order actual dubbing wax.
