    Had to look up the danica mayfly, I'd never heard of the species or the fly pattern. Well, we don't have them in North America. The technique will be very useful for any large burrowing mayfly (e.g. hexagenia family). Thanks again for a great video.

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ira, absolutely right, perfect for any of the larger burrowing mayflies, just change the colour if needed.

      I was wondering myself why is he tying a mayfly nymph so BIG. Most of the ones I find in my home tailwater this time of year are about a size 20

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Matthew, The Danica and Vulgata mayflies (US equivalent Green drake & brown drake) are the largest European burrowing mayfly nymphs they can be up to 32mm long and live in the sand of river beds for several years before emerging and can burrow as deep as 15 metres deep in the river bed.

      @@Thefeatherbender I tied 3 of them last night. Each one got better as I kept going. I tied them on size 10 as I didn't have any other hooks of that type. I will order some size 8 and 6. • @radioglyserin
    @radioglyserin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    A very nice tie! And you're right, you can use some of the techniques on other flies. The marabou body actually gave me an idea for a small, naturally coloured, very light/airy shrimp pattern that I have been trying to "invent". I'd like the underside of the body to resemble legs, and I've tried a lot of different techniques/materials, but so far I've not been happy about the result. Either it doesn't look too good, or the technique is too time consuming. I like simplicity, because I'm extremely slow when tying flies. This marabou body just might be the answer to what's been bugging me for about a week now. Thank you!

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, and great to know. I would like to see the results when you get it done. Check out different types of Marabou there are quite a few.... Good luck.

    Would you mind doing a multi-part taking from this to emerger, dun, and spinner? Danica is European, but, Green and Brown Drake (E. simulans, E. guttulata) are similar hatches in North America. The sometimes blinding hatches of these large insects brings the big girls out to dance. It's worth planning a trip to catch the hatch.

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, just done the emerger that is the next stage to this nymph, just match the hatch regarding hook size and colour.

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks fishwish, The natural can vary a little in colour depending on the type of river bed it lives in but generally speaking its a kind of light / creamy sand colour. The dubbing will also be a tad darker when its wet.

      The feather bender Glad to hear you’re recovering. My eldest daughter and her husband each had it at the same time. Knocked them down pretty hard. I hope to go see them in a few months, if I make it. Sitting here writing this in a surgery waiting room. Not what I want to be doing, believe me. Anyhow, my daughter lives in Cleveland, Ohio, which is on the west side of Steelhead Alley. The Great Lakes have a thriving population of them. One big reason I want to go visit.
      Oh, by the way, we have something in common beyond flys.., I did commercial photography for about 12 years. We’ll talk more about that later. For now, glad you’re feeling better. Peace.
