- The only two nymphs are literally the only twonymphs i can use with confidence everywhere i go. One or the other have caught me fish in all rivers i have fly fished.
In the video i will tie both.... But, more importantly i will explain why i need only two patterns and how to get the best out of them.
Of course, i don't fish them all the time cause it would be boring and i don't believe these are the only two nymphs, one can have his own pair of nymphs.

Can’t remember exactly how you said it,but I really chuckled. Don’t use to big of clump of guard hairs and try to make a dry with a tungsten bead. Thanks for the tying lesson.

Nice flies and very good presentation. I agree with your comments toward the end as well. They match with what I learned over 30+ years of nymphing. I nymph almost exclusively in Colorado and Montana. When fishing in Montana I mostly use size 14 to size 16 flies. In Colorado, I use size 20 to 26 flies--even some size 28 flies. Weight putty on the leader sinks the flies to the appropriate depth.

@@Oholisfliesandfishing I always fish Montana in the Summer. I'm sure that smaller flies ( midges ) would also work there in the Winter. I fished the Eagle River in August in Colorado. Tricos were plentiful in sizes 24 and 26 and fish responded enthusiastically to imitations.
@@schmoonkie i am sure in winter small works too. It's more common in winter to have small insects and bigger ones in warmer seasons..
A very instructive video and great patterns. Last trip I only fished your flies and hooked 12, landed 9 from 1LB to 5LB with 2 /4LB fish. 1 brown and 8 rainbows. I make 12 flies of each pattern and give 2 to my fishing buddy. Much appreciated down-under in NZ.

I take a very similar approach with my nymph box but with 3 patterns instead of 2, I tie for a variety of weights but also sink rates - so I tie a tassie devil (pink bead with CDC hackle , very similar to your hares ear), a frenchie (similar to pheasant tail) and also a perdigon for a fast sinking option, all in multiple weights in sizes 14 and 16. As you said, it is really nice to have the option of having weight but not fast sinking, especially as I usually fish just a single nymph, so I find myself fishing the tassie devil most often out of the 3 patterns. :)

I use mop flies. Pro fly tyers hate them because they are easy to tie and work.
I agree with your approach. Love the Tassie Devil. close to a Pink Squirrel.
Now that's a brilliant insight. More bulk and less hydrodynamic = better anchor. Awesome! I only ever considered the sink rate, but this makes a lot of sense. 👍🤟
For some places it is useful. You can also add densely wrapped genetic hackle. Make a parachute effect.

It's really nice that you give the details of how you fish the flies and the difference a material can make. I'm just now starting in tying and fishing for trout.
I'm crash studying how they feed, biology, behavior.. It's great to get both lessons at same time..
I still have to practice casting but enjoying the tying as much as fishing.

I think there are many more like us. But we all tie many patterns for fun and i guess hope to make better flies 😀

Lovely simple patterns. I've decided I only need two or three types of nymphs ever. I still tie variations for fun. bu t honestly, a pheasant tail and hares ear or variants are all I really need. I always enjoy your advice and patterns. :-)
Glad to hear more people are thinking in this simplistic way... I like to have box/es filled with these flies in various weights... Empty spaces are experimental flies.... Product of boredom or something else.. But when all fails. I go back to my two best flies... 😀😀🍺

Thanks. I made a video long ago. I am sure that i explained msterials during the video. But, basically, pheasant tail barbs, hare's fur and some dubbing in peacock color. However, use anything available, dont bother with exact materials. Though, these are very easy to get

When I grew up fishing and tying, all my mentors were purists like A. K. Best, bead heads were pretty much considered lure fishing, an ‘attractor’ pattern…..guess I kind of still feel that way.
I can see why. Thats a legit opinion and attitude. I love unweighted nymphs because it means i use them usually for sight fishing and thats top level for me. Nothing can beat catching fish and seeing it all 😀🍺

As for cdc, you can never go wrong with natural. Dark gray is perfect match.

Did you ever say the size of hook?
Probably not. These are both generic flies. So you can tie those anywhere from smallest hooks to largest. Depending on size of insects in your rivers. But in general, smaller ones usually work best.

Thanks a lot Alex, i use chinese hooks. They are exactly the same shape and size as dohiku jig hooks. Beads are also from china. I also buy them here (hooks and beads) and sell them with a friend on balkan.
My all time favorites are tiemco hooks. But to be honest i use all i can get. And nowdays you almost cant go wrong with hooks. 🍻

What type of nymph would you use in slower water where trout get a good look at the fly compared to faster water? Thanks.
For faster.... As long as you can get it to where trout is it will probably be eaten ... In slower water something lighter with perhaps cdc for movement... Lighter nymph drifts more naturally..

I always make flies i will use. So bead size matches places i will fish. Both of these flies should be made in various sizes and weight.

Obviously is just a suggestion, but definitely list of the materials would be amazing and time saver, instead of going back and forward after i watched the video, then i try to match the material/color on my local shop website, etc etc. I think you got the point.
Anyway, great videos, here in Bulgaria you get recommended a lot for fly tying, i started watching your videos few days ago and i learned a lot, thank you!

Anyway, dont bother too much to copy everything to last detail. Fish arent so smart. What is important to know is techniques and nature of mayerials i use and why i use them so you can find alternative materials in case you dont have same ones i am using.
@@Oholisfliesandfishing thats good to know, usually people advice me to follow closely the nymph patters even with the right size of thread. But maybe thats not the case as long as i dont deviate too much and replace the material with something similar
@@DeyanGeorgiev-iw8hb size of thread is important. If you have small fly and have only thick thread than you are in trouble. If you are tying streamer, using thin thread is also bad because you need more wraps just to cover the hook. Thread should be optimal for the fly size

Most used are 16 and then 14.... I go down to 18 sometimes 20... For unweighted flies i go down to 24

On phaesant tail its peacock ice dub. Chinese brand, royal sissi. On hares ear its leftover underfur from guard hairs.

To be blunt, who has time to stuff around with legs on their hare's ear like this? I'm tying for bulk flies. lol Not to micromanage my dubbing and legs.

Trout will eat both flies... In all honesty most of the time i would dubb thorax softer and use velcro to brush it out... Sometimes i add cdc in a loop.... Which helps a lot...

Another superb video , thanks , I would very much agree that these 2 patterns are a must , I tie the PTN in 16/18 using a orange or pink collar tungsten against the bead from Bogan Gawlik which buts up against the bead and provides hot spot and weight , ie double tungsten have you considered this ?
Actually i did it, check out my videos plumpy perdigon and Anvile Pheasant Tail Nymph. First one has more than double tungsten 😉

Great video and nice looking Nymphs, though a materials list would be nice for us novice tiers.
I think i said it along, while tying.... If i failed to do it its pheasant tail, wire, ice dub peacock and orange thread for the first nymph...
Coq de leon, Squirrel dubbing mix( i have a video how to make it), wire and hares guard hair from the mask for legs... This is for second one...
I have to be honest, its me being a lazy guy, but i should definitively start listing materials....
Ps: piece of advice, even if u dont have materials, just use what you have.... Dont follow recipes always.... 🍻🍻

I agree with you, tying is as fun... As for casting.... Find someone to teach you proper way. It's hard to correct bad habits. I am still correcting myself after more than 20yrs.... 😀😀

Hook size goes from 18 to 10
Beads from 2mm to 4mm depending on water speed and depth.
Slotted beads are perfect for jig hooks. Plus they fit ok on all other hooks.
On the other hand, classic beads fit all except jig hook. And jigs are most common i guess..
