My parents chickens did that and we just found it annoying as well as gross to clean out the nesting boxes.
We assumed that it was because they weren’t getting enough crushed oyster shells plus lack of space in the nesting boxes.
At least that is what we thought, so there could be other reasons besides those.

I have 10 sq ft, they get lot's of calcium. I tried filling eggs with mustard and hot sauce. I found the culprit....but I think she likes mustard and hot sauce as she ate all 4 that we put in there.

wet the feed slightly. Mine like it a lot better moistened. I don't give mine oyster shells but I do crush up our egg shells and feed back to them. Their egg shells turn out very hard when they lay. Just give them good laying mash. No problem with them eating their own eggs yet. I try to give them fresh greens some days and vegies. They like green beans and the yellow dock that grows wild in the yard. I also give them lettuce when I grow it for us. Yes, I guess i do spoil them some. LOL
