I have 2 year old chickens and they just started pecking their eggs. I use pine shavings but will switch to straw and put in some golf balls or ceramic eggs in their nesting boxes. Great info! Thanks!
When I was raising chickens for eggs. I would give them a hand full of ground oyster shells mixed in with their feed to raise their calcium level. An old farmer told me to do this because the chickens need the calcium to build strong eggs. He told me that chickens peck their own eggs to check the strength of the shell. In the time that I was raising them I never had a chicken peck an egg.
yep...they arent checking the strength my friend...they're looking for food lol....however I too feed my birds oyster shell and also crushed egg shells for calcium
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer It looks to me like if you feed the chickens egg shells then they would want to peck the eggs. That's like giving a dog a piece of ground beef to get him to eat the hamburger.

@@jasonmckee5030 nah, ya grind them up, and some say to run the shells through the oven too. Then it's just specks in the food to them (but a valid concern).

My 'Granny' (paternal grandmother) had chickens for the eggs. She always kept the shells and would put them in the oven to bake to dry them and toast the lining before breaking them up to feed to the chickens. They would eat them for Calcium to lay good shells, but, the toasting removed the taste of raw egg so they wouldn't peck at their own eggs.
This granny does the same!
We let our chickens outside every day except when there's snow or rain and recently one of our hens named Goldie (gold star/ black sex link) will squat down in a defensive position right at the door to the run and will not budge an inch when I try to go in if there's snow on the ground. I know she's mad and wants to go out but it's adorable.

My granny taught me about chickens I used dry tall grass and wrapped it to form a circle and below it a little cedar chips to keep bugs out and I always used an old gulf ball, my granny used nest eggs

I use pine needles lemon grass tips or dried herbs in my nest boxes. They pull those pieces up around them while they are waiting for the act. I use plastic eggs that do get kicked out once in a while. But have used ceramic ones.

This is great... I've heard to add fake eggs to encourage chickens to lay in certain places but not to discourage them from eating their eggs. I can see how it could bother them to peck on the ceramic egg, probably jarring their beaks a bit. My chickens are just about 17 weeks old so not laying yet (and it's January so who knows how long it will take). I can hardly wait to upload a future video of their first eggs!!

We experimented between straw and pine shavings in a milk crate and our chickens overwhelmingly chose the shavings. Weve found that as long as the entry way to the nesting boxes is clean and relatively poop free, then so will our eggs. But if the chickens have to walk through a heavily poopy area, then they track it into the nesting boxes.
yep...mine have free run to get out in the mud...therefore the eggs get nasty....shavings in the nest box encourages roosting in the nest box...that's why I say use hay or straw if possible...yep...shavings are more inviting..thus the roosting in the nest box problem

Idk if that’s all but fertilizer on the eggs it might be mud I know if it’s dry out my eggs are always cleaner but if it’s been raining the eggs are all dirty but I could be wrong!

Hey love the channel and I really feel you are a lifesaver! I have about 30 (call them 30 dirty birdies) birds. They are all 10 months old and at least half of them are laying even in this crazy weather during February in TN. My problem was some of them are eating the eggs - all the eggs unless I happen to get out there at a time of day when I've gotten to the eggs before my little egg eaters have! At first, I thought maybe they needed more calcium. I make my own feed and it is high in both calcium and protein etc. The eggs I do get are tough-shelled which hints at the fact that they are getting good nutrition. The girls look good, healthy, and act like good healthy birds. I ferment my feed - they love it and eat it all. I feed them a little over 1/3lb of food per bird per day! I also give them plenty of forage. I have too many ground and aerial predators to let them free range so they have a nice big run and lots of 'toys' to keep them busy as well as weekly hay bales I put in the run for them to peck and spread. I thought maybe the egg-eating thing might be because I have two roosters - one of which is very hard on the girls (some of them have bald spots) so he's going to be sold or processed. After lots of research and talking to fellow farmers (I'm a newbie homesteader, though I have had this homesteading dream for most of my life - and now at 60+ years old I'm finally doing it) I've found out that the chickens could be eating the eggs for all of the reasons I've noted above. Probably banging my head against the wall trying to figure out the 'why' of the matter and just deal with the problem. I am on Amazon as we speak ordering some phony eggs and will try your suggestion. It beats the heck out of having to redesign my nesting boxes which would involve some major reconstruction of my coop - I don't want to do that. So thank you, thank you, thank you! I know your suggestion will work and I am grateful for the gracious spirit of you and your family for producing these videos that bring endless education, serenity, and comfort to all of us newbies out there!

Nice quick video on this topic Josh, thanks but I could also use your expertise. I built the most amazing chicken house last summer...it is octagonal with 7 coops and 7 runs for our different breeds and maybe meat chickens and a brooding coop too this year. It looks like a huge 8 sided gazebo. Each coop has 4 nesting boxes and there are no more than 10 chickens in a coop. Check it out on my channel if you have time. My problem is I can't seem to get the hens to lay in the nests. 3 or 4 hens will but the rest all lay on the ground. I have lots of straw in the nests and fake eggs/golf balls. Plus they were pooping in the nests so I thought maybe the roosts were not high enough so I raised the roosts so that they are higher than the nests. I also go in there occasionally and actually place a hen in the nest so they know it's safe in there. I built this kind of coop cause we're running a farm stay here and I need the chickens to be safe in case a guest has a dog with a strong prey drive. Also our black leghorn flock( Elvis the rooster and 7 hens) have not laid any eggs for 3 months since moving into their new coop...You think they hate their new coop or what? close up the entrance to your next boxes a little bit...stuff them full of hay or straw and see if that helps ya..you next boxes may be a little too big and inviting

We tried the false eggs for awhile only goog thing was the opossum tried to eat it instead of our real ones lol he didn't make the cut for a farm animal.
I've got to do this. mine aren't laying and when they do they're pecking and eating them. I've put in a light and giving them black oil sunflower seeds along with layer mash.

Give your chickens Oyster Shells and collect your eggs regularly. I use the ceramic eggs to teach my new flocks where to lay.
Couldn't you just put up a sign that says, "No Egg Pecking"? lol
We used ceramic eggs before they were ready to lay so they knew ahead of time. They did hide some of them and then moved them back later recently which my wife and I found bizarre but funny.
Hey Josh, chicken question for you. I got three new hens about 6 weeks ago and those 3 hens keep sleeping in my nesting box. They don’t appear to be getting picked on by the rest of my flock, but they won’t roost with everyone else even though there is plenty of roost space available. Is this just because it is winter and they like that warm box? Is there something else going on? How do I break them of the habit? It obviously makes for some nasty nesting boxes full of poop and I am desperate to make it stop! Thank you so much and I love your channel!
Question not directed at me but I have a suggestion. Block of the nest box at night. Put your girls on the roost for a few nights. I have one hen that's a different bed. Even though she was hatched and raised with the others, she tends to be by herself.
We tried golf balls but it didn’t work. When the boxes were up higher we didn’t have this problem but we had a chicken that would sleep in the boxes and the eggs would be pooped on so we lowered the boxes and now the eggs are in full view when they pass by. I’ll try to block their view somehow and see if that will work.
if you tried golf balls and it didn't work..my friend you need to get your eggs up a little more often...or try ceramic eggs...it's not about the view...it's about the habit...also ensure your chickens have plenty of oyster shell for calcium

Stoney Ridge Farmer, I use ceramic eggs and have for years, but I find that they kick out the ceramic eggs from the nest boxes. We also have a problem with the hens repositioning themselves on the nest and breaking the eggs against the wood floor of the boxes. We use hay and should have enough to cushion the eggs but the hens seem to move the center out of the hay to lesson the amount to cushion. We are going to try foam cushions to see if this will help. Do you have any suggestions for these two problems???
put a higher lip on the entrance of your nesting boxes...stop them from kicking out the straw....and stuff that box with straw....and I mean STUFF IT!!!

From Indonesia: I have a small pheasant farm near my house. The peasants are in the cage 2x4 meters with ceiling 3 meters. Every cage has 1 male and 2 female pheasants. The problem is 50% of the eggs are pecked by them. The Second problem is they always put the eggs elsewhere outside the nests I put. Well, do you have any advice? Thanks.
Ceramic eggs do help but are not foolproof. I also mark mine but FYI, they will float in water
My preferred bedding is well dried grass clippings which I store for winter use
Uh...why not just buy a bale of straw? You won't have to gather up wet grass clippings which could create mold, mildew and respiratory problems with your birds? We're talking bout $4 my brotha

@stoneyridgefarmer I started using some wooden eggs to encourage the use of the laying/nesting box. It seemed to work great, they took right to it the very next day. But since then I saw yoke one day, and just caught them pecking and eating at an egg layed on the floor. Did the wooden eggs start this or will they help stop it?
toss some wooden eggs in the floor too....they'll learn that they don't get a reward from pecking an object that looks like an egg

yes...gather your eggs 2 times a day and use golfballs/fake eggs

All of the guru's and experts I've read and researched say no food and water in the coop. Keep that all out in the run.

I have chickens and they don't free range due to predators.
After two years all the sudden when this bitter cold hit my hens started eating there own eggs

Something I have done to break egg eating is to blow the contents out through a little hole. Fill that with yellow mustard and put that back in the nest box.
I have a chicken which is laying every day but when I wake up the next morning I found that an egg has been eating so I must mix that golf ball with egg same time in the nesting place or I remove eggs immediately the chicken lay and leave the ball I'm little bit lost in your explanation Sir
you need to put in some golf balls and gather your eggs each afternoon my friend....thats' my advice leave the golf balls in the nest box all the time....gather your eggs every afternoon...if you're off work sometimes check a few times a day...get them out of the coop and leave the golf balls in the nest box

I started with nesting boxes and fake eggs. I got my first 2 eggs the other day. I got 2 more today. The other day, I took those 2 eggs for myself. Spoils of hard work. Today, I actually saw one of the chickens laying the egg. I left it there because I want more than 2 before I go pick more. I went back this afternoon just to check on things. I have another egg. But the first egg of the morning was busted open. I tossed the straw with the egg, and put more straw, and put the ceramic egg back. All of my boxes have a ceramic egg in them. So now what? Do I have to kill one of my birds?

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer only one out of five laying right now. She lays between 6am and 2pm. Kind of hard to watch every minute. She is not the one eating them. I suspect another one is.
How do you keep chickens lice free?
don't overcrowd...there's a couple products that get rid of lice out there....try them...I've never had lice on my birds

They peck and eat their eggs because they are lacking a nutrient or two. I add ground oyster shells to their.feed a few times a year and they don’t peck the eggs
Do not put any "True game Birds" in with your Chicken. My daughter had Pheasants of two breeds in with her chickens and she had a big trouble with the Pheasant's breaking up the eggs of the chicken's. She tried the golf balls trick(It will work). She moved all the game birds together in another place. Since 1 broken egg

I free range my chickens. I have never had this problem. My girls always lay in the nest box. They have never pecked eggs. They are busy running around 5 acres of scrub brush and fields. They don't get bored enough to peck at their own eggs. I think the reason you have cannibal chickens is they are locked up in a small area.
Nothing worse than the bad hen eating a egg in a timber box, gonna get a box or bucket and put them in rather than the wood getting a rotten egg smell it's cruel
