  • A woman tries to join a spin class.
WELCOME, MEGAN is used with permission from Lily Richards. Learn more at / welcomemegan__film .
Alex is a young woman who is stuck in life in some ways. She's not getting the jobs she wants; she's got a boyfriend that's kind of annoying. But she has retreated into fitness to generate a sense of progress and personal power in her life.
When she hears about a secretive, elite spin class at the gym, Alex becomes desperate to join it, fascinated by the eerie, brittle confidence of its students. Once she discovers how exactly to win a place in the class, she's at first horrified -- but then even more determined to join.
Written by Tyler Ramirez and Lily Richards, who also directs and co-stars in the film, this short dark comedy is a heightened story of a young woman determined to pursue self-actualization at all costs, as well as a sly satire on the fervor of modern wellness and fitness culture. Alex is a smart woman, but finding it hard to get her footing in life. But an encounter with Megan, an intense but charismatic spin instructor who leads a cult-like class, seems to offer all the answers to her feelings of failure.
The storytelling has a workaday, almost dreary look and feel at first, and its visuals feel anything but aspirational, making it clear that Megan's life is static and mundane, with her dingy apartment and hapless boyfriend. But after Alex meets the messianic spin instructor, the cinematography and colors turn claustrophobic and lurid as Alex intensifies her efforts to get into the spin class.
Taking its cues from classic dark comedies like HEATHERS, the film takes big risks when it comes to its tone and storytelling, eschewing emotional realism for dark satire and humor. But the more it deviates from proper or normal behavior, the more compelling and fascinating it becomes, especially as Alex's fanatical commitment to success ramps up. Richards's performance as Alex becomes increasingly unhinged and unbalanced, and repeating the phrase "success requires sacrifice" as her mantra, Alex readies herself to take the most drastic action of all.
WELCOME, MEGAN never shows too much of the secret cult-like class that Alex is desperate to join, but the real transformation comes through the efforts to get into the group, as Alex proves herself ruthless enough to do anything to succeed. Bringing a dark new wrinkle on the idea of a journey being just as important as the destination -- and perhaps provoking questions about what it means to be monumentally successful in today's world -- Alex finds her place in the world at last. She just had to become a psychopath to do it.
