    Cool wagon shaved door handles sweet! I still would like to go back to the 60s and look at all the kits. As a kid it was all about picking out a kit. And building your favorite cars.

    Great video. I don't think anyone buys Jo-Han kits expecting something Moebius-like, but the subject matter is attractive and the bodies are beautifully detailed.

    • @TheMuscleCarModeler
      @TheMuscleCarModeler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. I think they are just like MPC. But MPC have been repopped so much and the molds have been worn out. Lots of issues and fitting problems. If JoHans were reissued as many times. I believe they would have the same rep as MPC. But since they are remembered and long gone. The reputation is different.

    I wish I'd get as lucky as you, so I could find a '66 Chrysler 300 Johan kit. Back in the day I built one and brush-painted it. I'd like another now, and air-brush paint it, to display side-by-side.

      I find deals like this on kits I’m not looking for! It’s the ones I want, I can’t find. Once I do find one and buy it.. A better and cheaper one comes along and then I have two!

    Great review of your Jo-Han '68 Chrysler 300, Raoul! The older kits which I remember as a kid building were a challenge but that's what made building them fun. Thanks for bringing back fond memories doing so and as usual thanks for posting your video(s)!

    JoHan seems to have a few well detailed parts in their kits, that's why I bought two of these for the long ram intakes back in the '80s. I put a first gen hemi in the 1960 DeSoto by JoHan back in the '70s That ghost flash with part of the transmission is interesting.

    • @TheMuscleCarModeler
      @TheMuscleCarModeler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! This one surprised me as well. I have many JoHan kits and this one has way more flash than any of them. Love that long ram and have a resin copy of this.

  • @MrModelworx
    @MrModelworx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a couple of these too, a nice built up from the 70s and a new kit molded in the same tan colour as yours but with less flash!... It really was pick of the draw with Johan and flash, I had a Turbine car once and that thing was literally buried in flash.
    Great video I'm a big fan of those big old Chryslers,I have an AMT 64 and Johan 65 and 66 hardtops too.
    I would like to see more vintage unboxings like this.

  • @jamessawyer8889
    @jamessawyer8889 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really wish that they reissued the JO-HAN kits because they are so rare, but so cool, & so worth having, you could have a blast building them, but who knows if anyone dealing with resin couldn't recreate them & price them within reason

    • @TheMuscleCarModeler
      @TheMuscleCarModeler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would like to see them as well but since that is not possible. I believe the price is driven by the rarity and the nostalgia of building them. I believe that if they were regularly available. Most modelers today would complain about the lack of detail and simple chassis. The body's are great and they look awesome finished and I love them. But they really don't compare to many modern kits.

    I got one of these not too long ago, but I paid a little more than you did. I didn’t get raked over the coals on it, though, because it has a bent A-pillar. Now I’m going to have to dig it out and see if it’s as flashy as yours, which I’m sure it will be. The car on the box top reminds of the Green Hornet’s ride, though that was a 4-door. Just put Kato in the driver’s seat, and off you go.

    Great video I love jo-Han kits I have about 30 something kits built and unbuilt not to mention all the build ups I bought. I started buying them in the mid 70s until they went out of business. I would buy the kits today and for the flash and mold lines so what I am 59+ that's how kits were back then it's part of modeling. Don't get me wrong the kits today are awesome you work with what you have I also love mpc specialty the annuals. Have a great weekend thanks AL from upstate New York.

    If they were re-issued, whomever might do it, might clean up the molds, so flash may not be an issue. Personally I don't mind flash, other than the time wasted having to remove it. What bothers me is when they have automatic body tubs and a manual transmission, or wrong year interiors, stuff like that. I started with MPC and did a lot of cursing, at the mismatched parts but now I see them as great opportunities to kit bash, like you do and you have to appreciate that Jo-han and MPC did some pretty neat bodies, which as you say look really nice built up.

    • @TheMuscleCarModeler
      @TheMuscleCarModeler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is what I like. When I was younger I never noticed the manual trans and auto interior. I just cared how it looked at the end. They were fun to do and that is all I remember!

      The custom stuff on this is pretty good looking. Many of these old models with the custom parts just don't hold up to the trends. I find many vintage kits with custom parts but finding stock parts can be difficult!

  • @notenoughmemes1847

    I would probably have a mixed opinion on this kinda kit. On one end I would be glad to be able to build this kit if it was released under amt/mpc, (because I'll probably never get my hands on any johan kit because of price), but I would also be kinda mad they never bothered to at least try and update some things with the molds. Which is also generally my opinion on old mpc kits. Glad that I can build a model car of this specific car no other model brand is offering but man do I wish they did the same kinda reworks they did with a lot of their 90s kits. I mean just look at amt's '71 charger, that thing was as bad as their 69 charger in its early days and got its molds reworked to be probably the best amt kit for customizing and reworking other kits.

    • @TheMuscleCarModeler
      @TheMuscleCarModeler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love the old JoHan kits myself but have the same thoughts. Would love to see many of them redone with better detail. The AMT 71 Charger and also the AMT 71 Duster are great kits. They are however all new tooling and not related tooling wise to the old MPC 71 Charger and 71 Duster that they originally issued. They did not rework the old tool but started brand new from scratch.

  • @markskonecki2050
    @markskonecki2050 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I remember buying a bunch of these in the 80s just for the 440 because most of the Johan mopars had hemis in them. Johan always had the best bodies in my opinion out of any of the model manufacturers, the chassis were the worst though. Lol mpc was a close second.

    • @TheMuscleCarModeler
      @TheMuscleCarModeler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can agree with that. The bodies are very nice! The chassis on many JoHan really are lacking.

  • @yukimikasaki9705
    @yukimikasaki9705 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you make up your mind to build this kit, and perhaps you should, I'd paint the body a metallic pink, use the stock grille, but custom valance unit. The interior would be custom, done up in white, and I would go with the custom wire wheels, and black walls.

  • @auteurfiddler8706
    @auteurfiddler8706 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have that kit. I haven't looked at it for a long time, but I don't remember ever seeing as much flash on any of my kits as there is on yours.
    I have the actual car also. I have to give Johan credit. I don't really see anything at all that is seriously wrong with the kit. That dash is accurate and it is a great dash in the real car. The seat upholstery even has all the seams in the right places.
    I think the built up kit is rather well done. The chrome moldings around the window have to be hard to do. He must have painted it very carefully. Of course the engine color is wrong. I think early Hemi's were black and silver, and of course the 440 would have been blue or orange. My only criticism of the built up kit is the interior, which looks like a natural leather color in your video. That was not available. Well, the blue paint of the outside looks a little speckely. Oh, the engine bay should be body color. The engine bays and trunk insides are body color on UniBody Chrysler products. Not like a Ford Galaxie of the same era which would have a black engine bay.
    The long rams were last available in 1964. I have a pair and they would not fit in a 65 to 68 C body since Chrysler no longer made the car with the pockets in the fenders for the ends of the long rams. Much more rare than the long rams themselves are the exhaust manifolds needed to support them.
    The back panel between the tail lights: That can be either argent ( a buff silver) or semi gloss black. It is rumored that the black was added later in the production run because the argent was reflecting back too much. But it may just depend on what plant the car was built.
    I'd like to see you rebuild the blue car and maybe build the unbuilt one.

    As a kid building models Johan was definitely my least favorite cause lack of detail , matter a fact every Johan kit I got as presents and gifts I saved still in the box but after Johan ceased production I knew I had a small gold mine except a few years back my place was robbed and half my models were stolen and among them were all my unopen Johan kits.

I have all three still today and built the Cuda and Superbird in the last 10 years. They sat in the boxes for all these years because they were not as easy to build as the Revell Monogram kits I loved. The 64 Dodge is still in the box!
