Matilda Wormwood (Alisha Weir) is a little girl with big curiosity, a sharp mind and a vivid imagination - and the worst parents in the world. While her parents (Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough) content themselves with trashy TV and dodgy money-making schemes, she loves to lose herself in the pages of her beloved books. Where they are loud, selfish and unkind she is a quiet observer, thinking up small and cheeky acts of rebellion and revenge.
On meeting her inspirational teacher, Miss Honey (Lashana Lynch), Matilda is encouraged and begins conjuring her own fantastical tales. Excited to attend Crunchem Hall, Matilda is surprised to find the school is an ominous and oppressive place led by the huge and villainous Miss Trunchbull (Emma Thompson).
As well as kind Miss Honey, the bright lights among the meanness are story-loving librarian, Mrs. Phelps (Sindhu Vee), and Matilda’s newfound school friends. Filled with an overwhelming sense of justice, Matilda dares to take a stand for what is right and teach Trunchbull a lesson she won’t forget.
Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical is an inspirational musical tale of an extraordinary girl who discovers her superpower and summons the remarkable courage, against all odds, to help others change their stories, whilst also taking charge of her own destiny. Standing up for what’s right, she’s met with miraculous results.
Directed by Tony Award-winning director Matthew Warchus (Matilda The Musical), the film is produced by Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan for Working Title, Jon Finn (Billy Elliot), and Luke Kelly of The Roald Dahl Story Company. Screenwriter Dennis Kelly adapts the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production for the big screen, with original music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.

this character was so useless and irrelevant, for me it was very good that they removed this character, if he was not going to add anything to the story, then the story is better off without him

Stephen Graham is brilliant, he really brought Harry Wormwood out of the pages, making him the Roald Dahl villain we love to hate.
Having seen the musical I was skeptical when I heard about the movie, but this looks so good!
It's really good I've seen it twice already! Alisha Weir (Matilda) is fantastic!

I heard a lot of clips of this musical Weather it be on stage or the movie, but I have to say the way Alisha Weir says, "I'm a girl", is probably the best way of conveying that frustration out of all the actors I've heard. Also watched her in the 2024 horror film Abigail in the title roll, and she was phenomenal. Girl is gonna be a star one day, a big name. I can see it now.

@@Ghostinasuit No, you don't. I've met and known many people from different parts of England and I enjoy all of their accents. In fact, I'm not sure I've ever heard someone speak quite like the father in this scene. I feel that's because of the expressions he's incorporating while talking so quickly. I hope you didn't feel I was making fun of you or your Country 🙂
@@raea3588 thank you (: . The reason why it’s such a strong accent is because of the musical theatre aspect to the film. His facial expressions play a big part of it.

Went to see the musical in previews in London after it made the transfer from Stratford. It was a breathtakingly joyful experience. Can only hope that the adaptation gives me a similar feeling - that Dennis Kelly wrote the script and Matthew Warchus produced it (along with Tim Minchin writing the new song) gives me a lot of hope that it will be. The trailers and interviews I've seen have only added to that hope. (Very pleased to hear that Alisha Weir's favourite song for the character was Quiet, for example - it's such an evocative song which tells the audience so much about the character. Tim Minchin is superb at crafting lyrics that seem simple, but express so much complexity.) It will be interesting to see how they use the added flexibility of film to add more magic and oomph to Matilda's telekinesis, and also to see how they deal with numbers like School Song which seem better suited to theatre.
This was a nice clip to show the ghastliness of the Wormwood 'adults' - but I also quite liked what it suggests about Matilda's performance. It made her feel like the grown up in the room, whilst still emphasising not just the power imbalance, but also that she still is a kid... if a precocious one. Tonally, this felt spot on from all involved.

I've not seen the stage production but I took my children to see the film a few days ago and it's a giddyingly joyous bucket-of-sunshine type of film!
I could watch it over and over again - kids or no kids! A new family favourite.

still this is based off the BOOK that the Broadway musical is based off and the Broadway version is inspired by this 2022 film not the 1996 version
