- After hearing that 932 WB had 3354 leading. I decided for the Curve for a great shot. Dispatcher routed 932 up Two behind a 401 Empty Coal. 23M was Routed up Three. I knew 23M would be Cleared before 932 showed up. But then hearing a 21M coming up behind 23M. Called Approach at Altoona when 932 called 238. The Rest is all in the Video. Enjoy!. The first 2 or so minutes is the train climbing up the hill to the curve. A good set of headphones will make the audio better. 5/10/2013.
You just got to love the sounds you hear before you ever see it. Nothing better
You Sir, are sharing a terrific experience. Thanks, well done.
the sound is really good, and i am glad to see this kind of railfanning video.
excellent to see and HEAR those powerful Locomotives pulling up the curve. love it. HAPPY NEW YEAR ROBERT LONDON UK
The colors and soft tones in this are remarkable. It looks like a painting in motion!
This scenery is beautiful.. I can just take in all that with a drink all day without seeing anything pass that place.. really wonderful
Grew up going there as a child. Recent passing of my grandmother had me on TH-cam looking for some videos. Sure brought back a lot of good memories. Thanks for sharing.
Nice video and scenery! It sure is nice to see someone else's territory. Love the sound of the trains grinding away long before you can see them. I run from Eugene Oregon to Klamath Falls Oregon in the Cascades on what used to be the Southern Pacific RR. The grade is about 45 miles long, ranges from 1.5%-1.8% and has 21 tunnels.
This is a hoot! Great! Been there twice, no trains! This makes up for it, many thanks for sharing!
I rode through Horseshoe Curve EB back in 1993 when the Broadway Limited was still running. Fun trip to and from Chicago: WB on the Lake Shore and EB on Broadway. The trains to Pittsburgh of course still go through Horseshoe Curve. It's a very cool thing to do, and the scenery through the mountains is spectacular. I did it in snow in the first week of March.
Reminds me we haven't been to the Curve in a while. About time to do something about it.
Great video!
Thanks!
Wow! Beautiful video.............thanks for posting it!!
this is stunning. Good job
Awesome SD40-2 leading! Very nice catch from the both trains making the curve!
Thanks for making the difficult walk to make your video, also the fly's were nature's way of announcing something BIG was on the move!
Good catch with the SD40-2 leader!
Dang! I thought that container/trailer train would never end... and no pushers tagged on the end. Lovely video... I enjoyed it a lot more than all those bees did ; )
I thought the same thing lol
Love those sweet Norfolk Southern beasts. Great Video!
OMG. As many times as I have been to HSC over the years (since 1989) I have never seen two trains heading westbound at the same time. Too cool. I am sure the dispatchers did whatever they needed to do to ensure both trains reached their destinations safely.
That was hot and with that rain and squeal which two really don't mix, mixed together anyway, made this beautiful
CSX and UP jointly run a 90 car produce train from Seattle,WA to Amsterdam,NY five day service,Train starts out as UP's "Z" train to Chicago,IL CSX crews it (UP units are now run through power) from Chicago to NY, the warehouses(which are refrigerated) built on both ends for this train service was built in a horseshoe shape to accommodate the whole train, after it gets emptied it runs empty back to Chicago,UP again crews it to Seattle I believe five trains a day run this route,it is the only train in the system that has priority over all regular freight, premium UPS, stack trains and even Amtrak service. (From a story in the the magazine Railway Age.)
Have ridden this many times on Amtrak. See rail fans often!
Being an NS engineer, its something magical to see another train passing on the curve, 2 is awesome, once you get 3, that's even better, but seriously the name of the video needs changing, speed limits only 35-40 on the curve..... I go passed this almost every day, and if you think its busy here go to Gallitzin tunnels, it gets almost crazy there with the traffic.
I'm sitting here at work sneakily watching this video (muted in case the boss shows up) and im thinking "why did they start the video so much before the trains actually show up?" Then I went back, turned the volume up and heard the rumbling/screeching at the start of the video and then I understood why:) Just awesome! Great video. Feels like I was there (except Im glad I wasnt...I think all those bugs would have drove me nuts).
nice video and great catch of the 2 ns train's racing at the horseshoe curve.
Awesome catch. Well done !
Wow almost didnt get those Herzog cars on video Amazing video too.
I have been there and saw one freight on each track at the same time, very loud and very beautiful
The first 2.25min is brilliant, headphones on with volume up with the build up of so much noise and anticipation, then glad to get to those pig trailers and finally could see over the top! Must get to this place someday!
Being at this angle is best. Inside the park, the view is limited, plus you have to pay. It aint worth going inside the park until they remove the trees screwing over the view.
Great catch! I'd be freaking out with all the bugs though!
Your video should be re-titled, "Sweet timing at the Curve", haha! Awesome video man!
Nice catch!
I forgot how good of a view this was... Great shot.
Nice catch man! Real cool video.
That rock train is really putting the knuckles to the test!
Awesome video! Haven't been over that way in about 11 years, but it's an awesome place to visit. Last two times I was over there, I did a 4-day/3-night trip, staying at what used to be the Tunnel Inn in Gallitzin. Between the trains, the history of the area, and the awesome scenery, they were awesome trips. Couple years ago, I discovered Thurmond, WV, which is also another favorite place of mine to visit. I have videos of those trips on my channel.
That turned out perfect!, you can get lucky sometimes!!
Sounds like that SD40-2 is doing all the work and the Dash 9 is just chilling out lol.
+TheThomasSproduction more then likely haha. Gotta love the person who put that SD40-2 up front.
+NS6677 40-2's are among the best investments made
+NS6677 LoL
Carmichael Train Production Channel 327 I agree.
How tough a hike from the road is this? Any NS patrols? Awesome shot!
Not sure if that D9 on the ballast train was dead in tow or what. But that train must have been very heavy since it also has pushers and is clearly getting outrun by the longer hotshot; both trains have four engines although 21M has more horsepower. The SD40-2 on the ballast train is the best part of this clip naturally.
It was online. But the entire train was a LOT heavier than the intermodal overtaking it on Main 3. Plus no AC power at all on the Ballast train compared to the doublestack it had one or AC units which were helping out a lot too.
This is one place on Bucket list to do 2 trains with the Clouds in the Back the shot doze not get any better this Awesome video!!
adding in my fav video
How cool to hear them screaming before you see them. Nice video
Oh yeah nice video fa show man!!! B-)
wow. Thought over 2min of loud diesel drone was a bit much until the curve told her secret. Great catch.
and the high pitch squeal just adds to the excitement...
Nice pre-roll of audio. Was not sure at first if the train was going to enter the screen from the right or left. Nice tripod lock-down. Too many bugs for me. Great post.
John Schaub
Great video!
Wish I could find any pics or video of the fiber optic cable install construction train that laid Sprint's fiber thru this area back in fall/winter 1987. I was on an Amtrak from Lima Ohio to Philly and caught it in the Horseshoe area. I am a railfan by nature so was excited to see the curve live anyway, but I am also telecom by trade - so what a TREAT ! I recall a rotary trencher mounted on a flatcar looking utility frame of some sort - MASSIVE ! it had to go at least 30' across and was able to fold down diagonally and dig into the right of way . I've have never seen anything of the sort before or after. Unless it takes 6 - 8 Sprint pick-up trucks on site, as locate service, I am sure it was a Sprint project.
Excellent video.
How do the engineers know when the back of the train as passed any certain point?
So do you park at HSC parking lot then walk down the road through the one lane tunnel, and hike up the hill to the right?
No place else quite like it!
Freakin ghost train - first 2 and a half minutes is the erie-sound of train getting ever closer
Hey give us a break, its almost a mile to the curve once you make the right curve, and its ALLLL every single bit of it, uphill at a 1.34% grade up until the overheads (signals) which you cant really make out in the video, at the start of the curve.
+Jaggar Mann That is an EMD 645 engine in notch 8.
Great Video!
did you park on the road on the other side of the tunnel to get there? I see an ATV trail on the map but have no idea where to park
my farther worked for norfork southern
What happens when these trains get to the top of the hill at the Gallitzin tunnels? I assume one of these trains has to stop and yield to the other. Or do they both go through the tunnels and the east bound traffic must yield?
3 tracks on the hill. Both can go through Gallitzin at the same pace and not stop. Only reason why they would stop is if one would to get a bad signal in Cresson.
How long did it take to hike to that spot? I'm planning my first trip up there and was curious because I wear a prosthetic leg. But as long as I know what I'm getting into and plan ahead accordingly it usually isn't a problem.
This video is insane. Two giant snakes worth alot of money getting it done since the 19th Century.
Dang talk about a display of horsepower!
I wonder what happens if they run out of track , one guy has to slow down,, lol nice video
It was in a small section actually. Im glad those things didnt get into my shot. I will consider some bug killer. Pain the the Assers haha
how long was that train that was in the forefront of the pictures. with all the trailers on it
Over a mile long, and still lighter then the train on the middle track.
Were the hoppers marked Herzog carrying ballast? You nabbed a great spot for your vid!!
dandyky Yes they were carrying Ballast.
awesome video
We do this successfully all the time, and we have a huge amount of stuff to move.
Robert Royce Now, that's railroading!! Gives me the shivers to look at it. To my friends around the world. This is how it's done!
We load those Herzog cars, here in WI, at Mathy on the CNs Valley Sub.
I let it roll because of the SD40-2 leading. Though the rain kinda kills the noise
How much faster do u want to go?
Why do the wheels squeal?
They mainly squeal because of
1. Braking or
2.The train is leaning in the turn
I'm sure there's a lot of wear on those rails on such a curve thus the new track laying alongside ready for installation.
where did you park to get there?
Cool train pass, looks like a nice area to railfan
Its horseshoe pass. Its located in Penn state. Google it. You will know the importance of this pass. Just to explain its importance. Horseshoe pass was a target at list which which Nazi made during WWII to cripple US supply lines.
***** Horseshoe Curve actually.
Yeah, I said it wrong. Its near Altoona PA
***** I googled it and something located in England came up LOL, But I did find it as Horseshoe Curve. I have seen videos of this before, didnt know it was the same place. Actually its about 3-4 hour drive from me.
O wow! If you are into trains then its a place to see.
just where is the horseshoe curve again i can't place it?
How long are those trains !!!
How'd ya get up on that hill?
Belo video!
This is real rail!
Hey, I'm planning on visiting this location in the summer, do you know how to get the shot you did here? Is there a path that I dont see on Google Maps or you just have to walk through the forest, and from which way do you enter? Any comments answering my question will be appreciated! Thanks!
Nice catches!
Yes, there is a path that is above the tunnel on the opposite side of the park. One tunnel goes over a road, the other a small river. There is a hiking trailing that you can access that allows you to walk over the tunnels, its kinda steep, so don't rush trying to get up there.
wait, what's the secret?
also i don't get the title of the video. i was expecting on of the cars to tip over a bit or something.
Nide "double-header" catch. Thaty had to be one of the longest inter-modal, piggy-backs I've viewed. Too bad we could not get a clear view if the EMD DPUs s
"shuvib" their guts out on that "rock-runner"!
Great vid!
Its in Pennsylvania US. American power on the head is a lot taller than say a British class 47, or 43 to give you a idea of size.
That's a familiar site... it looks like the same location that the late Dr. Phil Hastings and the late David P. Morgan went to to catch the only westbound steamer (a J1 2-10-4) that was to be dispatched west from Altoona the day they were there back almost 60 years ago. The J was on Track 2 and another train on Track 1 came up the hill a little before the steamer did and blocked the view. At least the gravel train got there first in your case.
Amazing!
Were those bugs flying around as the trains were just about to you? If so, it looks like I'll have to buy some bug spray when I'm there next month!
That is correct. Walk up the hillside above the tunnel and you will see a trail leading up to the west side
Any problems with Staff / Security yelling ? I believe its just forest up there, and not private grounds. Believe I also seen others up there too.
is engine 9272 on the intermodal an ex-SP unit? or just rusted paint?
the eman Just rusted. There are no ex SP units on NS. Ex UP but not from SP.
Great video and location. Is this spot accesible to the public from the viewing area on the inside of the curve?
From the inside of the park now. You would need to hike up the side of the hill on the other side of mountain from the park.
What was the deal with the insects starting to fly just as the trains were coming?
Hold back! Hold Back! Giggled the trucks.
+Scl 3985 Haha, classic Thomas the Tank Engine quote.
Thank you, sir. I'll never outgrow that show. It rocks!
+Scl 3985 Indeed, Ringo and George were the best narrators.
I still watch it, but do you?
+Scl 3985 Oh yes I do, actually watching Season 2 right now.
awesome train video and nice trains
Nice!
Good !
awesome
very long trains...
Nice!!!!!!!
train race
Is this England? Looks like USA.
KOOL VIDEO
Sony XR 150 Handycam. Its getting a little worn out though.
I've been to the Penn Horseshoe curve. Although this site is great with it's 3 tracks and visitor platform, I like the Horseshoe curve in Caliente California better. It's a location just west of the Tehachapi loop. First of all, it's quite dry with no pines or deciduous trees so there is a clear view all the way up the hill. It's a single track but at the watching area, there's a side spur that always has a train waiting. And it's seems almost a loop, the curve comes back on itself so much. So when a train is coming west from Mohave or "down the hill", it first appears at a level at least 1000 feet higher than where you are, way up by Rt. 57. You then know about 10 minutes later, that train will appear at the top of the hill to come down into the valley where the curve is. You can follow it coming down the 2% grade and follow it all the way around the curve, right by you at the crossing gates, and then continue past a usual waiting train on the side. I'm not a professional videographer otherwise I would post my IPhone video's of the place. Maybe I still will.
WOW how many cars on that intermodel train?
33 Cars, according to my records. Since 1 5 pack intermodal car counts as 1 car.
