In the Arizona desert we keep pack rats out of our cars using solar lights. My mom fastened a couple of light strings to a board and she parks her car over the board. It lights up at night - no pack rats.

I put my car “to sleep” every night after pack rats ate thru my gas line. This is how I did it: placed panty hose filled with mothballs put them on top of tires and in the engine. Next I had a bucket that I placed cheap solar lights in during the day. At dusk I placed the lights in engine, on the ground under the car. Also left hood open slightly. Sounds like a lot of work but really wasn’t. Saved my engine, wiring, and gasline. Never had pack rats or mice in my car again!!

When I lived on the farm we used mothballs for snakes and not sure if it really works but the old farmers used human hair clipping in the garden for critters and animals. My neighbor even had a deal with the local hair salon and they swept up after hair cuts and saved it for his garden. He would bring them fresh produce when he would pick the hair up.

@@ravenmasque7156 can I ask how you used the mothballs and hair cuttings? I have been getting snakes in my shed and would love to move them on naturally.

    • @ravenmasque7156
      @ravenmasque7156 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@melsparkles I would put them in knee high panty hose and hang them around in the barn and well house, but under the home, our animals can’t get to so we would scatter them around some would put them under upside down pottery to protect their cats. The hair cuttings would just be sprinkled in the garden, you have to do it often because it decomposes fast.. (I will say, we had a black racer (non venomous) that lived in our attic. We left him because he didn’t bother our animals, kept the mice at bay in the home. At lot of people think that is weird, but if you live on many acres and you or any surrounding farms did harvest or even mow for hay, the field mice moved in.) THE BEST THING I EVER HAD… we put fake toy snakes on our porch and it kept birds from nesting and pooping on everything.
(I was brought up city girl and beautiful ole’ country farmers taught me their ways. Many swear by soap (like zest bars for strong scent) on a string around garden for deer, tin cake pans hanging near gardens for birds especially when they put their seeds out. Drier sheets under cabinets around pipes to keep mice away, but those have to be replaced often, ziplock bags nailed up that had a circle drawn on it with a sharpie, with a penny inside filled with water to help control flies. But be careful at placement sun rays will act as a magnifying glass..fire..And the oddest one I actually had to look up and it does work, bayer aspirin is not just for our aches and pain, it is great in your garden. An old farmer who sadly passed now laughed when I asked him if he was crazy when giving him garden water with aspirin. he said they get headaches too, his lovely wife explained it was something about the acidity.)

I find that moth balls work very well keeping rats out of engine compartments. Take a small plastic container, punch some holes in it and fill it with moth balls. Use wire ties or wire to secure it in the engine compartment. The moth balls generally last two to four weeks depending on the temperature. Also pick up some aluminum tape and wrap the wires the rats like to eat with it. Make a kit with wire, soldering iron, solder, wire cutter, electrical tape, etc. to repair your wiring the next time this happens. Rats also like vacuum hoses.

    wall to hold hanging plants
can hand water as earth structures don't like to get wet
    Think neat feature
    as a wind break
around garden. . .or wherever you want to relax.
Maybe plants felt a little exposed and energy presence down with wildfire shared life drop to west. Allows pests in.
Could do climate controled greenhouse, or earthship passive cooling idea
(keep out herbivores by keeping cool during summer by building another hut cover...
screened vented house ....for outside ac component, bury wires)
A practice green house you all can try out woodworking joins and with roof plexiglass (think I read ...does better light filtration than glass for plants).
Happy Birthday to Barron if lifespan increases like last century, could plan on another 90 years 🌋
ps try dutch oven campfire bread, better than electric oven as tempertures get hotter to 500°F like need for crust. Also einkorn and semolina wheat nice flours to try, more absorption of food helps metabolism.

Elsa, I moved to Colorado from the East coast. I was fine wearing contacts on the East coast. But, the lower levels of humidity, along with the dust in the air made it impossible for me to keep mine in for more than a few hours. All the activities I use to do on the coast, mountain bike, hike, ski, I could no longer do in Colorado. I finally got lasik eye surgery. I swore I would never have surgery on a "healthy organ" but I just couldn't take it. My glasses bouncing all over my face, while on my bike, motorcycle, skiing, always fogging up in the winter. ANYWAY, I have an amazing surgeon, located in Denver, if you ever decide to go that route. He is not cheap, but he's the guy the doctors go to when they want eye surgery! It was life changing for me, and I wish I would have done it sooner. I think it has been almost 2 decades and I have never regretted it or had a minutes trouble. I am just now at 56, starting to need glasses to drive at night, and readers for the really tiny print.

I concur with Denise Smith's comment regarding corrective eye surgery. Fellow Missourian here, but like to travel to your current locale. The lack of humidity out west can be miserable on the eyeballs. I was very near-sighted with severe astigmatism and corrective surgery was miraculous when at 35 when they could no longer match my contact prescription to my glasses prescription. You're at a good age to do this, because your eyes have matured (mother worked many years for very good ophthalmologists, so this is not a random statement) and the advances in technology are amazing. If you go this route, you'll probably start to need readers into your later 40s and early 50s, but it is worth it. Particularly if you're working on a computer for hours at a time. As someone who would nearly pass out when they tried to dilate my eyes during exams, I still made it through and never regretted it. It was amazing to be without glasses for the first time since age eight. In the meantime, try Similasan Complete eye drops. Homeopathic and they work. Happy Fall Solstice!

I am almost 56 and just started to need them for the really tiny print. And I need glasses for driving at night, mainly to be able to read street signs. But honestly, most of my friends, who didn’t have surgery are in the same place. I just wish I had done it a decade earlier. But I was too chicken😱😁

My grandparent, my mother and I lived on the prairie in Goshen Hole Wyoming which had me rattlesnakes than any place. You don't need to be a trained professional to deal with them. Just live with them and you learn to adapt. Barron removed the snake off the road which was an excellent move. People run over them and CDC as n get a flat when the snake bites the tire. The snake's fangs have injected venom in many mechanics and humans when trying to change a flat. Good job and good thinking.

    • @cathywhitmore7958

CORRECTION: The tire can go flat when the snake bites it. My grandparents homestead for decades and dealt with rattlers every week. I lived on that farm and watched them kill rattlers all the time with a shovel. Then you bury the head which still has venom in the fangs

When the snake becomes a threat or a menace, you take care of it with care and respect. Millions of people live in snake country and know how to handle them when the need arises. I am sure that none of you and your professional coworkers have never been bitten. Danger exists and risks with dealing with it but wisdom is required. Still say to Barron, good thinking and good job handling the risk. Could have been his flat tire that he ran his hand around it to see if it was a nail. But thank God it wasn't

Flies are normal this time of year. I live in a high mountain dessert, in Montana. Looks like the same surroundings as you.

Happy Birthday Barron!! I have followed this channel for many years. It's great how grounded you both are to the earth and your respect for animals. I see so many people kill a rattlesnake simply for it's rattle. As a Navajo, we believe, if you take a rattler off a snake, and keep the snake alive, it will in fact, look for it's rattler. Stay safe both of you and blessings.

It's more than humorous for us 35 year veterans of dealing with pack rats watch newbies fighting this battle. Everything I'm seeing and reading is entertaining. Everybody is an expert, it's like the blind leading the blind. Good luck!

Then give them advice silly. We are all human. All growing and learning. Being kind is better than your "expertise" any day. Have a blessed weekend!

@@Amanda-Renee Clearl wide areas of prickly pear cactus, vegetation, and trash critters can hide in. You must move your cars as often as possible, at least every couple of days. Open hoods frequently That's about it. I've seen pack rats adapt to every repelling device and chemical known to man. Constant diligence is the only solution. Your battle will never end. But I wouldn't trade where I live for anything else.

Happy Birthday Barron!!! Elsa, I found eye drops called Pataday. They are a little spendy for a small bottle but literally one drop a day in each eye makes all the difference in the world for me and I've tried them all. Wishing you guys all the best, always ♥♥♥

Yeah I got pack rats in my RV engine when camped north of Moab a few years back. I think they were the cause of my ruined A/C vacuum line. Also, A/C was rumbling and auto shop said they had built a nest in the 'squirrel cage". Expensive little f*ckers. Now I use Cabfresh, and flashing LED lights under the engine.
You go girl, getting that awning wrestled into submission!

Just putting this idea out there to all the TH-cam channels going to the Overland Expo: I think all the TH-cam channels represented should get together for a group photo. Ambition strikes, Down2Mob, (I guess forestry Forrest or camping with Steve aren’t going to be there), Mav, Truck House Life, off grid, I don’t know about Kara and Nate. Plus all the others I don’t know about.

With the sounds of wind be a constant companion you need to look into a small wind generator to augment your solar. wind blowing at night can keep your power at 100% even while you are using it. sounds like you need nothing more than a short mast and small wind generator and you would have more than enough power!

H*A*P*P*Y B*I*R*T*H*D*A*Y BEAUTIFUL BLUE EYED BARRON!! I love how kind your neighbors are, sometimes they can arent so nice. I hope you like the new ones that are moving in! Be careful for the rattlesnakes around Kamp. Do you have medicine for it if one bites yall. My favorite part was the two dogs licking the tinfoil together and catdog was kinda like not sure what to do! May I ask what kind of oil that was in your hair and how often do you wash it. I wash mine once every two weeks in the summer and once every two months in the winter. My hair is super dry though and I need oil in it. Cant wait to see your new dream stove installed! Much LOVE always!

As a fellow dry eye sufferer, here’s my dry eye recommendations: look into a nighttime dry eye GEL (Systane) and a daytime soothing and dry eye DROP (Theratears). Both brands offer preservative free options. I suffer from chronic dry eyes and can’t wear my contacts at times either and have to wear my glasses and I feel like my vision is compromised when I wear glasses 😩 If your dry eyes are severe, you may want to look into visiting a doctor and asking for a temporary drop (Lotemax) that will help with inflammation and possibly even tear duct plugs. Sounds more intimidating than it is, but the plugs help with backing up your tears and redepositing the tears back into your glands. You may also have allergies that could be affecting your eyes thus causing more inflammation which is exacerbated by the wind. If that’s the case, an allergy drop would be helpful also - Zaditor or Pataday. Warm compresses during down time also helps! Good luck! I know how frustrating dry eyes/not being able to wear contacts can be.

Elsa, they make camping ovens. There is one by Coleman and it should fit perfectly on top of your stove. It’s like $40-50. Nice new kettle, btw. Turning your land into a home is the best part of owning land.

He's just so cute and he's a cool little dog. See you in the next video. PS most important, happy birthday barren
