  • This is my first video on this channel and as the title says, it's a documentary about Naples. Naples is a beautiful city in a southern part of Italy. I've spent couple days running about and shooting whatever I could. Not enough I'd like to though.

As a Neapolitan, thanks for crafting one of the most objective documentaries about our beautiful, poor city

When I lived in Rome I often took a train to Naples. Whereas Rome is soulless Naples, for all it's faults has a heart. I made friends there and visited them S a guest on quite a few occasions. Happy Days in the 1960s.

@@xotan unfortunately Rome is still soulless.

Great travel video! Perfect format. Wanted to see more like this but was surprised that the channel had only one video. Hope there will be more soon.

Thanks. I will certainly make more videos, however, it takes a lot of time. So, probably this summer.

Please next time shows also the beauty, in Naples are located some of the most magnificent museums, churches, palaces, ruins and views of the world, if someone watch your video beleaves that Naples it's like the third world. In Toledo street you said there's nothing to see, in Naples there's no place with nothing to see, for example there you can visit one of the most beautiful art painting museum in Italy that is "Gallerie d'Italia" with the last painting of Caravaggio and in Naples is considered a minor museum, just becouse if you go to Capodimonte Museum it is the larghest art painting museum in Italy, three time bigger than Uffizi, but everyone focus on Maradona, rubbish, food, folk. We have an history of 600 years of principal Capital of Italy and one of the most important of Europe, we are not only a set for crime movies.

Have actually you watched the entire video? I never insinuated Naples is some sort of sh**hole or something. I was trying to portray the city as it is. Through the eyes of an outsider. The video was not just about the rubbish or crime, it's about the city itself, how somebody who doesn't live there perceive the atmosphere, the vibe of the city, how it feels to be there. And I reckon I've captured that quite honestly. Sure, there are more places to see, but it would literally take couple of years to document everything. And as I said in the video, the Naples is a city my girlfriend and I fell in love with, but that doesn't mean the video has to be all about the rainbows and unicorns.

There was an area of Naples the sailors called "The Gut". It was highly off limits, and we were told if we got caught up there, the "Hard Hat's" would beat us in the head with billy clubs. "Hard Hat's" were a group of Navy shore patrol that wore riot helmets. It was like a tradition for sailors to go there and see if they could make it out without getting pummeled. This was about 1978-1979, so I'm sure there isn't anything like that there now, everything has been tamed.

I've tried searching for "The Gut" area, however, I haven't been particularly successful. While some people mention the area, nobody knows where that is or was. Do you, by any chance know where exactly the area was? It seems like it could've been somewhere around Spanish Quarters.

@@astoundingplanet I was there about 45 years ago, but I'll explain what I remember. We would leave fleet landing on the water and walk inland (east) about 4-5 blocks where the ground was level, we came to an area where there was a sharp incline and the streets where narrow and made of brick. When we crossed the street and started walking the steep incline we were in The Gut. We'd usually walk up the steep street for maybe 4-5 blocks, that was where all the action was. The houses on the side of the streets were made of stone and they all seemed to be connected. A lot of the places we went had inside outhouses, and were heated with a coal or wood burning heater made from a 50 gal. drum. Hope that's of some help. I was usually fairly drunk when I went up there, lol.

Pretty comprehensive. You only missed the wealthier areas of Chiaia, Vomero and Posillipo, west of the city center and up the hills.
