    good video and great advise. I use vacum sealing for almost everything. I do use canning jars as well. I recently took out vacum sealed flour, powdered sugar, brown sugar, granulated sugar & dry powdered milk that was vacum sealed in 2020 to use for holiday baking. Everything was great. All my baked goods turned out great. Just a little FYI for those who have never vacum sealed dry ingredients-If you separate it because you buy in bulk put the dry ingredients in paper lunch bags then losely fold over put in vacum seal bags it makes it air tight without powder going everywhere & clogging up your vacum sealer. Sugar may seem hard when you first open but put in storage bag and crumble- it will take out all clumps. I store in vacum seal bags then when my jars are empty I fill them up again from the vacum sealed items.

    vacumm sealing keeps rice a minmun of 10 years! I seal them with my food saver and date them on the package. I rotate through them and just opened a bag of rice (jasmine) that wasnt dated but was well over 10 years old. once cooked it tasted great and cooked up great, I dont use mylar bags because i haven't found any benifits to long term storage using them VS my food saver bags. I also use jars for some items.

    People always think about SHTF when doing long term storage, but storing is helpful in a lot of situations. The shutdown was a great example of that. I had food and goods for us, and extra for a couple of people who needed it. In any kind of natural disaster, blizzard, hurricane, tornado, flood, if you are cut off from travel for an amount of time, these stores are a lifesaver. They will feed you and get you through. They were critical when I wasn’t working for a while, they kept me going.

      Oh, I have had ramen noodles go bad. The noodles themselves get a very odd old flavor, and the seasoning packs will get stale, and they can take on moisture over time. Personally, I wouldn’t keep ramen for more than a year, especially if it’s not in a secondary storage bucket or bag.

    • @TheHomesteadingHousewife
      @TheHomesteadingHousewife  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes this is how I just stock my pantry. I have a big family . While some of this stuff is for long term, if i had to eat on it for a year then id go through it all. But it is also good for the people wanting to plan for just in case events too like you said. And I thought I had mentioned to stick the ramen in a bucket or something because of pests. Maybe not. But yes unprotected, it will start to stale if moisture gets in.
      I'm very glad you had the stockpile to help your family plus another! That's awesome! We used ours as well and it was a lifesaver

    Awesome presentation, but a few tiny things to point out. Ramen noodles, while they do offer the benefits you described, contain trans-fats which will go rancid. I have encountered rancid instant ramen, they are nasty. There are products in the Asian/International food aisle that are strictly ramen noodles, not instant, not with the flavor packets. To my knowledge, these ramen noodles, do not have the added sodium and trans fats. They have to be cooked, but will last longer than instant. As you employ cooking from scratch, these alternative ramen noodles will be better for eating , reducing bad ingredients and high sodium and can easily have spices, broth, vegetables (like your dehydrated veggies) and meats,
    Also many commercial/retail packages, beans, rice, ramen noodles are not air tight and likely should be vacuum sealed in jars, mylar sealed etc, because of pinholes and air gets into them easily. Better to repackage for longer endurance and store in buckets, tubs etc (if not using jars) to prevent pests eating into bags. Great ideas, information and how-tos!!!!! THANKS!

    Save glass jars or stock up on them when you find them. I had a huge 1/2 gallon glass jar and put some freshly fried tortilla chips in it without an oxygen absorber and put it in our pantry on the bottom shelf and forgot about and I kid you not... A few years later I opened it and it tasted as fresh as new. Not one stale chip. So I would recommend storing ramen and other packaged foods in large glass jars if you can find them at goodwill or other thrifty stores. 🎉

    I think a lot of people are forgetting that we live in the real world, not a lab. The content creator mentioned how some people will claim that pasta doesn't go bad when left in the boxes or bags... first off, pasta still as moisture in it and it's more than enough to go much worse than simply stale... the more important thing though is that it's not ONLY about things going bad, it's also about keeping them edible and even enjoyable. For some, maybe they enjoy eating bugs more than pasta... so they don't mind that an eventual outbreak of pantry moths or other pests will end up eating the unprotected food. I would rather eat the food as intended instead of using it as bug bait. Pantry moth larvae can chew through thin paper, plastic and even Ziploc bags... they don't even have to chew through those boxes, they can crawl through the lid flaps. Each fertilized pantry moth female can lay over 500 eggs! Although the eggs normally hatch within a week and take about another 30ish days to fully mature, they can also somewhat stay suspended as eggs for up to a year. What seems like a small infestation can become a serious, repeat problem, quickly. Remember, I didn't even get into the many other pests that would love to consume and otherwise ruin your stockpiles.

    • @TheHomesteadingHousewife
      @TheHomesteadingHousewife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Very well put! Thank you for this great explanation! I know I for one do not wish to eat buggy pasta.

      @@TheHomesteadingHousewife If it's not obvious, I'm not talking theoretically here, I have suffered an infestation of pantry moths... luckily, most of our supplies were already properly protected. We spent a couple of weeks going through everything... cleaning every surface multiple times and setting out traps with attractant. This was a lesson I was happy to have reinforced first hand though, as it proved that we weren't being silly or overly cautious by keeping things as compartmentalized and properly sealed as we were. We still lost a bit of food, a lot of cleaning supplies and more time than I want to lose again.

    • @TheHomesteadingHousewife
      @TheHomesteadingHousewife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I had a feeling you were speaking from experience. I have never had to deal with moths, but I have had to deal with ants and mice. For me, it only took that one time of losing food to reconsider how it was being stored. That's why I always stress the importance of storing properly as you also have stressed.

No oxygen absorber needed. As long as it's in an air tight container it will never spoil since there's no water content. Even if it gets clumpy, its still safe to use. Absolutely! Although just for reference, my husband just ate a package last night with an exp. Date of 2016 and he said it tasted normal. I usually store excess in a bucket or tote just for extra protection from potential pests, but keep in original packaging. I save my oxygen absorbers and mylar bags for more precious food haha. To us expired or fresh, the ramen packs taste the same.

    Corn: So for those that don't have a husband that can get corn and can't grow their own where could I get it? Get corn stalk from grocery store and cut the corn off? Any ideas?

    • @TheHomesteadingHousewife
      @TheHomesteadingHousewife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can order corn in bulk just like sugar and flour. Azure Standard and amazon or walmart.com. I'm sure there are other sights to order in bulk from too. I'd just look at the prices and see where the best deals are. It is sometimes called dent corn too. There will be yellow corn and white corn. I use them interchangeably for the most part. It can also be called dent corn. It's your preference. You can also research. I believe white is what is ground for grits ans yellow is for polenta. Azure usually has the most bang for your buck if you order the large quantity. I wouldn't order feed corn though for consumption. It's going to be very dirty. Most of what I have is actually popcorn and grinding it makes delicious bread and orn tortillas. I haven't tried it for grits but I'm sure it's good too just ground on a different setting.

    Do you ever use desiccants like food safe silica gel packets when vacuum sealing dry goods (spices in particular)? Additional moisture shouldn’t be able to get in once sealed but I wonder about what moisture might already be in the food.
