My girlfriend (from russia) and i (from usa) spent 12 days in Şişli in İstanbul, and was the best time of our lives. Not one single person was rude, everyone was extremely hospital, and it was not a culture shock as I thought it may be. The culture shock was coming back to the States and seeing how day to day life felt in Türkiye, we found no scam attempts, every taxi/uber was kind with their meter on, and the very small amount of Turkish i learned was greatly appreciated by most people i met. A101 was a great market to go daily. The prayers throughout each day was actually very calm and we enjoyed when we heard. We took the metro daily to get around with the occasional Uber. Galata Tower was beautiful, too. The Bosphorus Ink tattoo shop was awesome and everyone was extremely skilled. We both got tattoos and had a chance to sit and chat with the artists inside, and learn more about Türkiye. And Taksim... We went maybe 4 or so times, and words can't do justice just how much i loved it. I have a deep respect for Türkiye and its people. We will be coming back to explore more districts in İstanbul, and we plan to visit Ankara next. Your videos helped me prepare for my first time leaving USA for my visit. Çok teşekkür ederim!!

Hiiii Bery, I just came home from Turkey (Istanbul & Cappadocia) a week now. I LOVEEEEEEE Turkey. As a solo black traveler, I was nervous, but I watched a lot of your videos, and they were very helpful. I also tried some of the food/food shops that you mentioned. Yes, I adore the Muslim call to prayer. I stopped and listened whenever I could. It's very soothing. The people were very helpful, especially in giving me directions as I got lost daily but considered it part of the experience 🙈. I didn't get to tick all my to- dos with exploring. But I will definitely revisit Turkey as soon as I'm able to! Thank you so much‼️ You have given me and I'm sure others, so much help without realizing it.
Turkish HAIRlines! 😂😂. Yes, we did see lots of hair transplant and rhinoplasty patients at the airport. Also, the public transportation was great but the T1 was very crowded. We never felt unsafe, no one tried to scam us, and we did not experience aggressive shopkeepers - even at the Grand Bazaar. We found most of the Turkish people to be very friendly and patient. I lived in Turkey for 2 years. I used to go shopping in old Adana and the food was delicious. The people were amazing. I miss it so much

We LOVED Istanbul and we hope we can return someday soon! The Turkish people were so amazing and friendly. We felt the food, and anything we purchased was very reasonable. Especially compared to the US where everything is becoming cost prohibitive for anyone to visit! One surprise for us was how clean the city was! Workers using a broom and dust pan in the early morning hours. I wish every big city would take this as an example! Two in our party liked the call to prayer. I personally did not but I enjoyed learning about everything in their culture. Enjoyed shopping for estate jewelry near the Grand Bazaar where I purchased a nice sterling silver and onyx ring for US$40! Can’t wait to return someday and stay longer 🎉
Just got back 48 hours ago from spending 4 night in Istanbul and your videos helped me a lot.
The Turkish people are friendly. On the trams it was so busy in the afternoons and evenings and people were giving up their seats for my dad who's nearly 70 and has bad eyesight. The food was good and the places we went to were busy but amazing

That’s something I also love about 🇹🇷, as soon as they see someone in the public transportation who might need the seats more than us, we always give them without even being asked for it 🥹

I didn't realize when I left how much I had grown accustomed to the call to prayer. I really missed it when I went back home. Also Istanbul has a smell. I don't know if it is because there is a perfume shop on every street , but it has a very distinct smell, and I absolutely love it.
I agree with the smell! It just has something different, when I also arrived here for the very first time, all my senses came to life 🥹

Very beautiful and wonderful country. I really loved my visit there recently. One thing that surprised me was a lot of smoking in the streets and the constant smell of cigarette smoke. I really liked the history and culture everywhere in Istanbul

I just came back from Japan and South Korea where smoking on the streets is very limited so we enjoyed our stay there a lot but we just came back yesterday to Istanbul, as soon as the door of the airport terminal opened up, all the smoke towards our faces 😭😭 even the taxi smelled just cigarette, but oh well, we need to get used to it I guess 😀

I found the call to prayer very moving and comforting. The early morning one woke me everyday and I used it as a way to say thank you for another day.
I like the idea of wet wipes at the restaurant table. I always carry them when I travel. Having flags everywhere is also common in the US.
Went to Istanbul last august to celebrate my birthday. Your channel is definitely a great help. Loads of information especially I’m traveling as a tight budget traveler.

As an Asian-French-American about the higher talk volume, it's "normal" if the population is dense such as Hong Kong - China or anywhere else in the World 🙂 I am sure I can talk as loud as a Turk haha!

I arrived back into Australia after spending just under a month in Turkey, and the one thing that shocked me was the driving on the freeways. For instance, driving at 140kph+ in 100kph zones and not indicating to change lanes. Hold on for dear life and don't look at the drivers speedometer 😂😂😂😂

As an American traveling to other countries, I’m often taken aback when local citizens tell me how warm, helpful and welcoming the people of America are to foreigners. I say this because Americans are so so crappy to each other it’s hard to imagine my fellow Americans being civil to anyone else.

I lived as a foreigner in Istanbul for 3 years. Not a single issue, confrontation or scam problem. I loved my time there and still miss good lamacun, sutlaj and gozleme!
Naturally there are some differeces that we are not used to, but which we can easily accept while visiting Turkey. Personally I have never seen a device like this in the toilet. In Italy we have a separate bidet. Anyway this country has to be discovered, as it is so charming! Thank you very much Bery for these helpful info.

The crowds are a real thing, Especially on the T1. I found it less crowded early in the morning. Also, the ferries to the Princes' Islands are packed like sardines on the weekends (at least in the summer). Go to the islands during the week and you'll have lots of room.
100% agree on this! In our case, we never go to the islands on weekends, since we don’t really like packed places we always choose weekdays, and one can really enjoy the places. T1 and the Marmaray stations like Yenikapi, uskudar and Sirkeci are some of the most crowded ones in the whole city 😩

I watch for new info, as well as just to reconnect with the place I yearn to revisit 💜 I recently heard that Istanbul is limiting/eliminating short term rentals; i.e., AirBnB. I noticed that the condo I rented in May 2023 was no longer listed when I was referring it to a friend making travel plans. Several other properties were off as well. Do you have any info about that new law?

my friends just came back from turkey istanbul and they were shocked as how EXPENSIVE every thing especially the food.
Expensive!!! Not sure where did you have your food but I spend 15 days and I had the best food in cheapest price. I avoided fine dining or touristic restaurants.
Everything was VERY inexpensive during my two months in Istanbul this summer. Only Athens came close to being as affordable, and it was still about double the prices in Istanbul. Don't know where your friends were going but it couldn't have been the same places I went! ;)
Turkey has some very affordable restaurants and some very expensive ones. It really depends where you eat.

Hi! I celebrate it at home with my husband 🎉 he knows is a very important day for me so we celebrate it together or sometimes even with friends, we prepare dinner at home, we exchange little gifts, etc.
However, Christmas is not celebrated in the country, you might see some places, restaurants, malls adorned with Christmas things but in reality, for Turkish, this is for New Year’s but somehow they linked everything about Christmas with New Year 🥹
There are some Catholic churches (I’m Catholic) that offer masses on the 24th of December for Christmas and Christmas Eve, the largest one is the one on Istiklal Street St. Antuan of Padua, there are smaller ones also around Kadikoy asian side, so any Catholic planning to attend some masses for Christmas Eve can easily do so 🎉
Lately, and due to the large communities of foreigners living here, now we can even find some Christmas markets or events 🎉😍

Hi there! Jan and Feb are two of the coldest months in Istanbul, we could even have snow (some years we have heavy snow, some others not even snow) but generally Jan-Feb is when we can see snow.
If you come with the proper clothing, no need to worry, all activities, museums, etc keep running as usual, just the Bosphorus tour might not be the best time since I recommend being outside of the ferry to enjoy the views but you could also just sit inside near a window and enjoy while drinking some sahlep or tea ❤️

Another thing that really surprised me was how expensive taxis from/to Bodrum airport were. I paid 1000 TRY for a 38 minuite trip. I thought I had been scammed but the hotel reception said that I paid the right price. Also, always make sure that the taxi driver ALWAYS has the meter turned on.
Isn't there a bus shuttle?
Bodrum's tourism season is 4 months. Taxis do not do much business except for these 4 months. Taximeter meters are more expensive than in Istanbul. Use shuttle next time. :)

Iam iranian and yes ... we do the same having yogurt raw vegetables known as edible sabzi and pickles known as turşi by side of our food ... mixing yogurt with rice beans ...yes baby ... and this story of wipe you said ... i got actually shocked ...so are you telling me that in other part of the world there is not such a thing 😮😮😮😢... because i got used to it ..and it is very important ..as part of sanitation and cleaning ... it is the same here in north cyprus (the wipe story 😅😅😅 not food quality ... iam just honest ❤❤❤😂😂... and turkish people are not horrible ... very hospitable and kind ... honestly speaking those most of the times scam you are not local turkish but those who learnt turkish and moved to the country or those who knew turkish in their own home land and migrated to turkey to find a job ... so mostly they scam you not locals

These people admire their language!..... As should ANY peoples! Also, Turkiye is NOT unique in having books only, or mostly, in their own language. France and Germany are examples, as is the UK, where foreign language books are not as numerous as English ones.

I was surprised by the number of women wearing the conservative hair covering while smoking. I guess that's a little sexist, as I wouldn't be surprised by a conservative Muslim man smoking. I was also surprised by the number of cats, even in the cafes. Luckily I never saw a cat smoking.

I lived there for 4 months and I totally agree with what you said they were all shocks to me too, except the sugar I never noticed that but also the evil eye and hardly anyone speaks English
I'm from a predominantly Muslim country in Asia, so bidet is common and a must. I often find it oddly satisfying when foreigners (especially westerners) converted from using toilet paper only to using water & bidet after they visit countries where bidet is everywhere 😂and sometimes I get snappy when I visit "pro-bidet" countries but some of their toilets (like in high end malls etc) doesn't have one. because usually in these countries I wouldn't bother to bring my portable bidet, so imagine the horror when I finished my business and there was no water to clean!!! I hope that wouldn't be the case in Turkiye 😁
OMG! I feel you! Here in 🇹🇷 can be found everywhere (I haven’t really paid attention about public spaces since I avoid at all costs those ones) but Asian countries have amazing bidet system 😍

Turkish (h)airline!!! 🤣🤣🤣 Literally every time at the Istanbul airport. The scammers are in every major touristy city in the world but people in most of those countries people are not as hospitable as the Turks. I absolutely love how your videos provide the most recent updates on everyday situations like the new Istanbulkart, current prices and cost saving tips. If you ever publish a printed guidebook, I think you will outsell Rick Steves and Lonely Planet.

Okay. Another one I would add is gender segretation. IDK about Istanbul, but in Antalya, the airport security had seperate cues for men and women, and in some shops, staff would not conduct business with the opposite gender.
The gender separation at airport security is very common. Here in germany as a woman I've never been body checked by a man.

They remind me of greeks 😜 with the loud and black people. they are very lively people. i met a turkish student in my home town because i am an uber driver. i did express how i laughed at how the men are like that on the movies as well . i told him that they remind me of my uncles ( black) . very lively down to earth people. the student replied that turkish people are like this ...i have worked for Greeks and they are like this as well. i know that turkey and greek border near cyprus , so maybe their are cousins. LOL anyway. it doesn't bother me. i think its like family. I also love how turkish men are expressive with their emotions. i wasn't use to it at first when watching movies or dizis but i am now . i find it refreshing. I have many other turks since and they come here to my state North Carolina USA. we have an international furniture market twice a year(high point nc) . i have also met a turkish couple that lives in another city. I love it because its not many in my area. more in cities like new york and chicago. I am learning turkish also and will definitely contact you and your husband when i am ready to visit.
