I really like this video coz you showed the machine being slow, other TH-camrs might cut these parts out. But showing this help you prepare for them in advance and not just expect it to work on one click. The smaller details always help as you know what might be possible so your mood doesn't get spoiled. Really glad and would love to see other things we might need to be prepared for like cultural or technological shocks.
Bery need to give you a big thanks! I just got back from an amazing trip to Istanbul. I used Tips from many of your videos for food, sites and getting around. I'm glad you give this tutorial because the transit card is a must. A note in addition to your comment about people reselling cards by the vending machines. I was also wary of these kinds of questionable people, but the machines by the T1 tram have high school student volunteers to help you use the machine and select what card you want. They wear t shirt or vests to note they are volunteers and only help you use the machine don't directly sell you anything. We saw them around many tourist sites in the old city, but also by the tram. They were very helpful and a pleasure to talk to them when looking for a little help
I have a bunch of family and friends visiting istanbul over the next few months and asked me to write up a small guide for them - I will ask them to watch your video concerning the Istanbulkart. Thank you for the timely upload, makes my work alot easier!
Thanks so much for the video! I'm going on holiday to Istanbul in 2 weeks and by far this is the most thorough and in-depth explanation of how the Istanbulkart system works. All the info that I've been looking for regarding the Istanbulkart are neatly summarized in this video.
I’m in Istanbul now and honestly it seems like a pretty subpar system. Not being able to use credit/debit card to top up the Istanbulkart, that it expires after 500 lira and that only Turkish nationals & permanent residents are able to use the app seems like a completely missed and obvious opportunity as well as not making things as seamless for tourists as it should be. Having that said this is a good video explaining this shambles of a system.
Thanks for the updates. I'm planning a trip next year on April. This video is much appreciated. I'm also using most of your videos as guidance to make my itinerary.
I would recommend ignoring anyone by the transit card machine giving advice. From my experience, one volunteer by the Hagia Sofia said get the Istanbulkart instead of the 10 pass card as it was a better deal. I showed him my Istanbulkart. He then said the same thing to the guy next to me and the customer bought the Istanbulkart from the machine. The volunteer then repeatedly harassed that customer that he should get at least 1 Euro for his advice. My advice is don't talk to anyone standing next to the machine. You might think of getting advice from the Polis if an officer is there, but most of them say they don't speak English anyway so it's futile.
Hi! Sorry for the scammers. But Turkish people love to help, feel free to ask anyone... If someone ask for a tip, just ignore them ❤ As an Istanbuler, i have helped a lot of tourists in many way never heard of tipping 😂
I been to many countries that harrass scammers. Istanbul was the least i ever been attempted to be scammed. They are not pushy or demanding. If you dont want something say no once they dont bother you. Giving someone 1 euro isnt a scam. He helped you out because even i got confused using the screen to buy a card
How would you know that the limit of one Istanbul card sold to tourists is 500 TL, and you would waste your time without knowing whats wrong and how come you cant top it up. I had to buy 2 in 10 days because of this new rip off. I lost my old Istanbulkart bought 8 years ago.
Merhaba Bery! Thank you so much for your tips regarding the new changes with the Istanbul card. I am currently on a long break in Turkiye solo travelling. I'm in Istanbul atm, been here 9 days. Will be travelling on to Bursa after this, Bilecik after then and then Konya. May have a short relaxing stay in Antalya too. I would like to thank u for your efforts in making your videos. They're brilliant, precise clear information that you can easily follow. Your a true gem bless you. I've not had to catch a single taxi so far, and I intend not to! Staying in Fatih area neard Kadriga Park but I've been all over, catching all kinds of transport thanks to you. Visited Eyup Sultan and had the famous Guveç, went to Ortakoy and saw the beautiful mosque there and of course I couldnt resist a Kumpir! I've been using the ferries to go Kadikoy and Uskudar. Saw the stunning Çamlica mosque which was an awesome experience! Sorry for the long message, I've never messaged before to thank you yet I've watched so many of your helpful videos. Only felt right to message you knowing I'm in this same magical city! Stay blessed Bery and keep doing your thing!
What a detailed guide! As someone who has been living in Istanbul his whole life, I can say I learned many things about the card I’ve bern using everyday for the last 15 years :D
In Kabatas Tram station you can find this City istanbul card. But we did not took it. Only Istanbulkard is top. We bought 2 of them, because we used them 11 days every day for different local transportation last month. It is not complicated, it is just simple. 🔝🇹🇷
she has the best videos for Istanbul 1000%, the amount of info from a vast range of topics is perfect and very helpful, and I will use this video and others a lot before I go. Thank you
Tbh.. i was first disliking this video since I'm looking for more info to our first travel to Turkey and is Istanbul in 2 month. But your where very honest with the ticket machines issues... I have now liked and I subscribed to your channel and looking forward to our first time visit to this exotic part of the end of Europan borders. Good luck to us :D
Was in Istanbul this week. Managed to top up my Istanbulkart with 700L in daily 200L top ups, so the 500L limit doesn't seem to apply. Thanks for your videos, they really helped us on our trip!
Hi Bery! You mentioned that Istanbulkart can be used for more then one person- I’m going to Istanbul with my mum- how do we use it? Scan the card twice before entering bus/tram or metro?
Thanks for creating these useful videos. I am planning to visit soon. Kindly also create videos on how and which transportation to use to visit all the tourist spots starting from the airport. like trams, buses and ferries but which one and from where. Thank you
Hi Berry, thanks for the update, your video is very informative as always, well done! My question is, can we still use the old istanbul kart? I still keep mine from my visit in 2021, and last time I went to Istanbul in Feb 2023 I can still use it (by topping it off as I go). Do I need to get the new card for next time I am in the city??
It seems the Istanbul City Card is mainly for purchase online and getting it couriered to your hotel is included in the price - probably why it’s so ridiculously expensive! I’ll just get an Istanbulkart when I am there in October that’s for sure!
Hola! Gracias por la info, yo tengo una Istanbulkart que compré en diciembre del año pasado, esa ya no me funcionará entonces? Voy a estar en Estambul el proximo mes.
We went to Istanbul last year. Beautiful city...but those card machines... The idea is great but they've got to get more machines and better ones. In addition to the issues you described, when there is an error with the card (like it's no good anymore) the machine switches back to Turkish, not whatever language you originally switched to. So if you don't speak Turkish...good luck. Also, about the scams...We had a guy come up behind us and actually grab my money from my hand and try to put it in the machine for me...be careful. He also told us we needed a new card but tried to take our old one, which still had a few uses on it. When I argued that I wanted my old card back, I don't think he expected a woman to be so adamant (or maybe he saw my finger tattoos) and eventually he gave it back.
Your summary is so good. We will travel perhaps 6 times a day, max. Son will stay in hotel room for perhaps half of those, so 3 trips x1 person, 3x2 for Thanya and me. We will be there a week.
Hi I was there last week and out of the blue the istanbul kart started deducting 15 Lira per trip per person.. this happened from usukdar to karakoy ferry and then again from ayasofia to eminonu tram... Any idea why ?
I am thinking of going to Istanbul Sep 2023 and doing a Bosphorous Cruise. Do i need to have an Instanbulkart in order to purchase a ticket? If I just want to do rountrip from Eminonu Port to Kadikoy ?? and then back to Eminonu Port do I purchase 2 tickets? (One going and one coming back)? Do I purchase online or do I go to the ticket office by Galata bridge?
Bery thanks a lot for all these precise and helpful information. I have just a couple of questions. I wanna ask if it's possible to buy the Istanbul City Card also at the airport (SAW) and what is the price now (21 september 2023), if it changed respect to the video. Thanks for the help guys!
Thank you Bery this video was very helpful. I was in Istanbul last week. It was my first trip and I enjoyed my trip very much. Istanbul is a beautiful place to visit and the food is awesome.
I noticed a difference in price between the website and vending machine. Can you confirm if the price difference is accurate or if it's simply not updated?
Hi I just wondering why sometime you need to tap Istanbul card at the entrance as well as at the exit; also if you are traveling in the same direction but need to use different public transportation to get from A to B do you need to tap your card every time when you jump for example from the bus on the train or from the ferry to the train etc … thank you
What’s the best way to get from IST airport to our hotel which is in Karakoy near the Galata bridge? I hear the Havaist bus only stops at Taksim Square so are we forced to take another taxis from Taksim?
Take a taxi at the airport. Why walk around with luggage and your family. By the way a taxi wont bring you from taksim to karakoy, its to near for them so they wil make something up to not take you .
Hey there! How do I refill credit on Istanbulkart with a credit card? Does all the vending machines have the option to refill with credit cards ? Please advise. Thank you 🙏.
Bery thanks for your help. I was staying in Bekitas and the machines by the ferry pier is where I bought the card. The card was great for going from the European to Asian side. Your tips are amazing.
This was really informative. I am traveling to Istanbul with my friends next week and this video is really going to be helpful while making a choice of which card to get. Thank you
A real life saver. Just one question.. when travelling through marmaray all the balance is going to be used and refund will not be provided to tourist cards ? That is a little confusing
Merhaba! My last trip to Istanbul was back in 2021. I am returning to Istanbul this November. Believe it or not, I still have my old ISTANBULKART from my trip to Istanbul back in 2015. I did buy a new ISTANBULKART in 2021 because I misplaced my old 2015 card. But I found it after I returned home. Can I still use my old ISTANBULKART's from 2015 and 2021? Or will I need to buy a new card for my upcoming trip in November when I am in Istanbul?
Hi, you mentioned that the card machine for the red IstanbulKart does not give back change. If i get a card with 200 Turkish Lira, will the difference between the cost of the card and the 200 TL be in the card? Wanted to know if I need to use exact cash to buy the card.
Thank you for this! Do you know any other spots (an office person, not a machine) where we can buy the unlimited Istanbul City card ? And what is the cost today -November 23- for 5 days? I can't seem to find any official info. The Instanbul Tourist Pass and the istanbul E-pass for attractions claim it now costs 55 euros (for 5 days ) and with their discount it costs 45!
Hi Bery - I'm visiting Istanbul in October and this video seems really helpful, so thanks a lot for making it. I have a question if you could clarify please - you said the card can be used for up to 5 people at a time, so I was wondering if I'm traveling with my wife, can we both tap the card at the same time to pass through metro station gates? Because here in the UK, you can only tap the card once at the start of your journey and it doesn't allow you to tap it again until you check out by tapping at the destination station.
Do you know if I can pay with a card at the airport to take the Metro to the city centre? I'm only planning to buy an Istanbulkart for my one-day layover there. Thank you!!
Hello! Great video! I have a layover in Turkey for 2 days. I'll be visiting with my wife on our way back from the UK. What card do you advise me to buy for these two days for myself and my wife. I do have an old Istanbul Card from 2019, not sure if that would still be functional.
Hi @@BeryIstanbulTips I understand the 500 TL top up limit will apply to that old card, however would you happen to know if this means that I'll have to wait till the following month, to be able to top it up again with 500 TL? Does my old card become invalid due to using up my 500 TL? Or can I just top up same old IstanbulKart (the yellowish one with black designs) repeatedly? As I understand for the new Istanbul Kart (the red one), you have to buy a new one and top up for limit of 500 TL each month, then it becomes invalid whenever you use up 500 TL within a month.

Just one question.. when travelling through marmaray all the balance is going to be used and refund will not be provided to tourist cards ?
That is a little confusing
Just wondering how do you use the Instanbul card when there is more than one person. Do you tap it multiple times
Apparently the city card gives discounts on some entry tickets to attractions like top kapi
Can I use this card to go to and from Airport ? with Public transport ( Subway / Underground)
Can you advise which forex cards work best in Istanbul (and the rest of Turkey)?
[I just learnt that Niyo Global does not work anymore.]
Good video, just an updat is the istanbul card is 70 Lira, and each ride is 15 Lira
can u please tell me that one card can use for two or three persons ???
and also after balance finished we can topup the card ???
You make pretty good videos. I congratulate you
Thanks Bery for your informations 👍🏻🥰 It’s a great helpful to me as I will be visiting Istanbul on this October. 🇹🇷❤
Super helpful- thank you 🙏🏻
Hi, you mentioned that the card machine for the red IstanbulKart does not give back change. If i get a card with 200 Turkish Lira, will the difference between the cost of the card and the 200 TL be in the card?
Wanted to know if I need to use exact cash to buy the card.
Can I also buy a one-way ticket once I get on the tram for example? Or do i have to buy it before hopping on?
Very expressive video so thanks to you 😊
Thank you for this!
Thank you for the very informative video. However I have one question… How long is the ‘red’ card valid? How long till the money on the card expires?
Hi Bery - I'm visiting Istanbul in October and this video seems really helpful, so thanks a lot for making it. I have a question if you could clarify please - you said the card can be used for up to 5 people at a time, so I was wondering if I'm traveling with my wife, can we both tap the card at the same time to pass through metro station gates? Because here in the UK, you can only tap the card once at the start of your journey and it doesn't allow you to tap it again until you check out by tapping at the destination station.
yes you can. One need to go through and then pass the card to the 2nd to use. So no restrictions on using it on the same stop twice.
In London you use card to leave station but in Istanbul you don't so multi use with one card is okey 👌
Fountain of valuable information, thank you love
Hello I have the old Istanbul cart what I have to do now? I see it’s changed
Hi! You can still use them, just the new top up rules will be applied.
How long this Istanbulkard valid? Is it more than a month ?
Thank you so much for all the information! :) Teşekkürler!
Thank you for these updates ❤❤. Making the trip planning easy for me.
You are so welcome!
