My father recently died, and him and I during my childhood played the Zelda's together, we absolutely had a BLAST tearing up Ocarina of Time. Before he died we were talking about getting Wii U's and getting the latest one, Ill be playing it by myself but man was that a great memory!
My dad and I played TONS of NBA Jam. I even remember our three digit names. My was ein, short for Einstein. His was bad. Short for, bad. Lol.
Anyways, I had played it for awhile before he started. I remember coming home from school in like fifth grade and another person had been playing. The initials were, bad. Then, the next day, that person was close to passing me up on my record, on my own game! I eventually found out that my dad was playing while I was at school. He was a fireman and worked twenty four on forty eight off. Eventually, he did pass me up on how the game kept score. He could beat me most games, but I still gave him a good challenge. I doubt I'll ever forget that time I came home from school and saw that. I thought it was the computer at first because it had like an arcade style top ten it would display, along with the name.

@@Seroxm13 It's true. Diddy Kong Racing is a better game than Mario Kart 64 imo. Pokémon Snap was the only Pokémon game I ever really liked (maybe even loved). I'm personally more of a fan of the TV show. Although, I've been disappointed in the show so I try to stay away from anything Pokémon related these days, but that's just me.
gamecatz same! I only liked both Pokemon Stadium games because of the mini-games lol but Snap was so much fun! I was always a huge fan of the Pokemon TV show and movies. I never played the cards or GameBoy games, just a little, 1 time a friend borrowed me the GameBoy.
Diddy Kong Racing was a better game for 1-player for sure! For multiplayer both were almost as good, but I'd give MK64 the edge.

Tony Cruz It couldn't make it, that game was too mature for its own good. That's the reason it didn't get promoted as much as other games, otherwise that game would've been in there as at least number 5. Shit was hilarious.

Mario has different franchises. They probably should have taken out Paper Mario out,because that one is in the main franchise (Super Mario Brothers,Mario Land,Mario 64,etc.)

Anything with Mario as the main character (ie, anything with Mario on this list, excluding SSB) is part of the Mario franchise, but there are different spin-off series like Mario Party, Mario Kart, etc. Even though they've become their own series, they're all a part of the same franchise.

It's a blatant way of selling more Switch's and guaranteeing customers be hooked into an online membership, which would make Nintendo more money.

Even being born 2000, I still had my hands on the N64 thanks to my older siblings. I spent so many days in Pokemon Stadium, Hydro Thunder, and Tony Hawk Pro Skater. Even better, my N64 still works!

Absolutely,Conker's Bad Fur Day was the best game I've ever played it was rude,irreverent,and a whole lot of fun, I am ashamed to say I never made it past the rock bar where Conker pissed on the patron's . Rare has been very very naughty. Classic.

was shadows of the empire the one where you fly around on a jetpack and fight boba fett? i loved that game, at the time flying with that jetpack offered a thrill unlike anything else in games, in fact it's been rare in any game since then to give me the same feeling that jetpack travel did in that game, it just felt so unique and intense.
never liked Turok for some reason... but SotE? Loved it.

emulation is just not the same! 3D was amazing and new at that time! never seen anything before like that, the emulation of games doesnt hold up to my memory of them on the actual console.

Mario 64 is a horrible game. It's very influential, but the game itself is horrible, especially compared to the gems that were on the N64. I wouldnt personally put it even that high, if it'd even make my own personal top 10 list. Mario 64 is influential, but it's not good.
DarkArmed619 I wouldn't say it is horrible necessarily in my opinion, but I do know what you mean. I remember it was basically my first fully 3D game so I was amazed by it as a kid so it holds a great deal of nostalgia for me. But, looking back on it objectively it really isn't all that great. I think Banjo Kazooie is a far better platformer.
Alex Colledge BK also holds up very well to this day. A few years back I played the DS versoin of Mario 64 and just lost interest early on. I got the whole 120 stars back in the 90s on the original game. Few years ago I got the Xbox Live Arcade version of Banja Kazooie and enjoyed it just as much as I did as a kid and ended up doing absolutely everything a 2nd time. Odd thing is though I have tried multiple times to get into Banjo Tooie but I seem to always get sidetracked.

I guess they made up that rule to shut up those Perfect Dark fanboys who would be like " Perfect Dark is better than GoldenEye". Perfect Dark was one of the best N64 games to be fair.
Still playing strong, september 2019. Tore it up on Mario Kart 64 with my 6 year old girl in battle mode today for about 3 hrs. She discovered the joy of hiding the mystery box bomb in place of a real one. 😳

That was on N64? We got it a few years ago on Xbox I think. But my sister did say it was the most violent game we played (I was too young to develop proper memory at the time so I see flashes) and it was awesome! We played it when my mum was still with dad and that was a bit after I was born! So I'm guessing its an ancient classic

I don't think there has been a system since where almost every game I purchased captured my imagination and made me fall in love with gaming and story lines since days. Nintendo did it right.

Banjo Tooie, Pokémon Stadium 🏟, Mario kart 64, super Mario 64 and Super smash brothers 64 took a big part in my childhood.
The N64 took multiplayer to a whole another level. I remember spending my entire summer playing Goldeneye 007 and Mario Kart. 2 of the best games in my memory banks.

conkers bad fur day deserves top 5. Graphics were awesome, story was great, very challenging game for story mode, and multiplayer was arguably one of the best also.

pokemon stadium especially since you could transfer your pokemon from your game boy to the system. that was revolutionary. Also the mini games were really fun
Me and my Older brother had a N64 The original back one growing up but we gave it away with all of our games to someone less fortunate A family in Mexico that my family knew when we went on vacation in 09.
It's now 2019 and I just recently brought a Jungle green N64 bundle with 2 games and a carrying bag! Now I'm trying to get all those old games I grew up playing again!
I thought F zeroX, Conker's Bad Fur Day & Pokemon Stadium would all be in there for sure.
I was recently playing pokemon stadium actually, busted out my pokemon yellow game & the game boy controler expansion & used my legendary team I assembled when I was a kid to battle the indigo league. It was still as good as I remembered it.

It's still a better local multiplayer system than X1 and PS4. It was the first machine where games actually resembled my dream games, if that makes sense.

Youravgfish That's what made GoldenEye so great. Less was more as the level textures looked the same. Looking at the opponent's screen made no difference.
stufaman It's pretty sad that local mulitplayer is fading from existence nowadays being replaced by boring/ uncivil online multiplayer. Local multiplayer is not completely gone (mainly thanks to Smash 4 and Mario Kart 8) but... enjoy it while it last I guess.

I don't regret buying back my childhood through ebay purchases.... I've got just about every game on n64 worth playing and an emerald machine with controllers for friends and it's been a blast. Just about everyone I introduce to it is easily entertained and intrigued.
I bought N64 few weeks ago and multiplayer w/ 4 people is really amazing! I won't regret this purchase for the rest of my life! :-)

Nice list but Conker's Bad Fur Day deserved at least an honorable mention. It's a fantastic game and arguably the most advanced on this great console.
I think Perfect Dark was MUCH better than Golden Eye 007. It had better graphics, a decent original story, more weapons with reload animations for each and every one of them, more and bigger missions, multiplayer challenges, a bunch mini games, and more multiplayer game modes. In short, it was Golden Eye 007, but better in every posible way.

+Big Brody I didn't mind the framerate until I played them one after the other a couple of years ago. Goldeneye was tolerable as long as there wasnt smoke on the screen, but Perfect Dark felt like it was in slow motion with 3 player versus

One game that is an underrated gem is Jet Force Gemini. A cutsie Zelda-clone on the outside, but oh man... it sure get's dark in certain areas.
Duke Nukem could've gotten honorable mention at least and I'm glad they mentioned silicon valley. Not a lot of people have heard of it but it was fun game. The Goemon games were great too. I could keep going.
I'm actually surprised Banjo Kazooie only placed at #8. I found Banjo Kazooie a bit more enjoyable than Mario 64. And... wait what? Banjo Tooie would have been placed instead, but the reason they chose Kazooie was because of Stop 'N' Swap not working? Really? Like.... Really? If I am right that would have been a real small part of the game. and wasn't important, not to mention I think it was a pain in the butt to program and was just a lil too complex. But really though? The reason Tooie wasn't chosen was because the Swap 'N Stop didn't work (Not to mention wasn't Stop 'N Swap more for Kazooie anyway?)? Banjo Tooie had larger, more creative worlds, more fun moves to use, the ability to play as Mumbo even if it wasn't a big part of the Gameplay, and even the ability to play as Kazooie separately. Banjo Kazooie was a really good game, but you can't deny that Banjo Tooie managed to be an improvement over the first. Saying Banjo-Tooie wasn't chosen for one small part of gameplay not working like the developers intended just seems so petty.
Also... "We're sticking to one game per franchise". A moment later... "Expect to see a lot of Mario on this list." I know the main Mario series, the Mario RPG's, the Mario Kart's, and Mario Party games are all different series, but they're still part of the Mario franchise. I don't see why they couldn't just say 'Mario 64 was the greatest of the Mario franchise for the 64'. It would have given like 3 more games a well deserved spot on the list.
I like Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie equally. They are both masterpieces.
