@@2300gearjammer hey, I'm doing the same as original comment, 2.3 on a 94 ranger. Would I be fine to take the belt off or should I mark first than take the belt off, I've never done this before

(now I have a spare) noticed the rotor wasn't turning so I guessed dizzy roll pin no, then I figured out it had to be the timing belt. My belt torn through some teeth at the crank and the timing marks are all over the place none are close to where they need to be. I pulled the belt today and based on what I have seen in your video I can rotate the crank, line up the marks and I will be at top dead center, then rotate the cam gear get that lined up. Flip the oil pump gear to find that mark line it up to the cam gear, install the new belt, set the tensioner then get to the dizzy. Set that and I should be golden? Sorry to question what I just saw, but I am new to 2.3's. I am used to working on cars from the late 60's and 70's. I have replaced timing chains just never broke one. Thank you in advance.
Haha I thought I saw this comment but it was sort of far down. Glad you got it worked out. Did you pull and reset the distributor or was it right when you reset the timing belt?
@@2300gearjammer I had to reset the distributor. Got it running but I was a tooth off. Lined up the oil pump shaft input on the distributor and dropped in it and everything is golden. This was an almost completely original car. Meaning original timing belt, fuel filter, etc., etc. Replacing things as I get the time. Next is swapping out the rear calipers for the Mark VIII calipers. The brakes are fine but the parking brake cylinders are blown out. It's seems like the Mark VIII's had a better set up. Your video was extremely helpful as this was my first timing belt. I took my time followed the video and got it done. Thanks again.
It would typically only need to be reset if you flip that aux pulley around and put the marks like I do. You can do it without that step but you have to verify the rotor button is pointed the right way. My way let's you time the engine blinded folded after it's setup initially. Good luck

I’m wondering if you can help me with my 94 2.3 ranger. I need to know if my valve seat are bad. Cylinder one seems to be weak. If I unplug injectors: cyl one unplugged, the idle doesn’t change. But the guy I jus bought it from said he just had the head rebuilt. I’ve replaced every sensor except icm crank sensor. It will drive great for less than a block then choke up real bad. Rough idle and want to die from a stop and cruising it vibrates a lot. No power regardless. Starting to think it’s ecm or valve seats 🫠
Ecm is extremely rare so put that one down the list. The way to diagnose that though is to do a cylinder leakage test and put compressed air in each cylinder then see where is leaks out. I've had a lot of busted valve seats over the years.

Hi, I have a Mazda B2300 - same as a Ford Ranger I'm told but it doesn't use a distributor. Ever since I bought it a few years ago, it has always been hard to start. To me it feels like the ignition timing is retarded and it's very under-powered. I've been told there is no adjustment possible to the ignition timing. I've replaced plugs, wires, coil packs etc etc with no improvement except it runs smooth once started. How do I set the ignition timing and where is the ignition timing pickup? And can this under-power be compensated by moving the cam shaft timing belt one belt cog one way or the other? Any help would sure be appreciated. Can the engine be converted to a standard distributor drive or after-market ignition control module allowing timing adjustments? Thank you.
Correct on the fact timing is not adjustable. You could run the PIMP ecu like I do but that's pretty extreme if you don't have many engine mods. You can check the ignition timing with a light just the same as the distributor style ignition. Timing belt off a tooth could certainly cause issue but you would greatly notice it elsewhere. For this kind of issue you would need to work the a diagnostic pinpoint test for cold start. You might find a coolant temp sensor way out of range or a MAF causing that issue.

@@2300gearjammer we don’t have the module on the distributor like the one in the video.
@@bryantmoore5606 you got it. That's why I included resetting the distributor, they are all off from the next if you leave the distributor in place it means the last person just stuck it in place and rotated it around to fix it. I prefer to have them all exactly the same.
Have you done a video on the 2.3 with 8 valves
Im working on a 1985 thunderbird tc and it doesn't have a spout connector like you showed it just has what seems to be a regular connector is that normal?
Im in the process of trying to get it running and ive been having all kinds of trouble i bypassed the fuel pump in the tank with a high pressure inline supposed to be 118psi and im having no luck gettin injectors to work i just replaced icm tested the pickup with a sensor tester and it seems fine injector wires have power one both sides when plugged in so i unplugged and tested for ground and its seems to pulse but then i noticed the timing was a tooth or so off so i fixed that and now im gonna restab the dissibutor like you show and try some more im really about to take a hammer to this thing it fires with carb cleaner but seem to not be getting fuel. Any clues would be much appreciated sorry for the life story but im beyond frustration at this point.
Hi, did you know by any chance the name of the litlle tank in between the intake and oil filter? and how to remove it or replace it
I've heard it called different things including junk. You can just pry it straight out though. They can be really stuck.
@@2300gearjammer If valves aren't sealing won't that cause smoke? I had a head with oversize valves that someone did in a hurry, and after I put a re-built head with stock valves on the beefed-up block it ran fine.
Where i found that ignition distributor i have a b2300 pick up 1994 and have many problems with ignition and i think to solve the problem its made it carb and eliminate all the fuel injection system? But i dont know in what year that engines come carb if you can help me thanks anticipated
I had an 86 mustang that was carb so probably anything mustang or ranger up to 86. Check with circle track guys. They may have parts leftover that they don't use.
@@2300gearjammer thaks for answer bro so in years 86 to 90 ok i try to founded
Do you by any chance have the part number of the timing belt on the four cylinder
Agh I don't have it handy. Make you get get the right one for your setup up though. There's a round tooth (newer vehicles) and a square tooth (older) versions.
Cool stuff, that is important to do if you want to make max Powah 💪🏻
I'm all about the percentages. If I cant make a lot I might as well make use of what Ive got haha
@@2300gearjammer 😂🤣 that's right, gotta squeeze all of it out then put it in a vise to get what's left 😆
Kickass bro .any thoughts on just a2.3 iron head and a monster carb setup just for us poor SC necks.an all motor or something like that.basic cheap and fast if it can be .any thoughts be appreciated.still working on my 93 notch 460 but thinking of a side hustle.lol..holler qnd glad to see you on the tele brother..keep kicking ass
Haha well if you don't have cubes you need boost and if you don't have boost you need RPM. That being said it would take a healthy carb engine to make 200hp but a stock turbo engine does that.
@@2300gearjammer ok thanks brother..I'm thinking of that kinda low budget build.maybe port and polish everything and bore it and all that can be done to it. And then yeah throw a beefy little carb on it .maybe a small shot of nitro.or something not to dangerous. I'm wondering how it would preform to use as a daily slash sleeper if need be..any thoughts brother.im poor so I'd have to do alot myself
@@2300gearjammer oh ok thanks brother
I didn't see the rest of your reply.appreciate it...keep kicking ass
@@mustangandfrankenstein I got you covered on the poor setups. Haha that's what I do. For my ranger I took the stock 2.3 dropped in a set of 300k mile turbocoupe pistons, I don't even think I honed the cylinders lol I have about $100 in that engine
@@2300gearjammer yes .that's exactly what my train of thought is. Exactly brother..and hey .I'd love another ranger if ya see or hear of one.body style 80 to like 90 ish maybe .with 5 speed..runnibg preferably or just body.4x4 too if possible..has one and loved it..gotta be cheap though if ya ever ceme across one holler like expired food stamps cheap.lol..I'm right here in Myrtle beach.miss that ranger 88 shortened lifted 8 inch.rebel flag as a headliner .a beater but ran great .good truck..ok thank you brother..
Just wanna know how to time ford Dohc 2300 16v using timing chain
What would the timing mark be on a esslinger cam gear?
Hey there! Im currently replacing the timing belt and tensioner on my 97 mazda b2300. Ive found that neither my cam gear nor my oil pump gear have any kind of timing marks on them. Any recommendations for ensuring im timing the ol girl correctly?
Did you happen to take off the gears? They can go in either way. I’m doing my timing for the first time and my pump gear was already switched around but my cam gear was not!
Hey what up buddy I just did my timing belt following your video? Just curiosity what would happened if I am a tooth off when I’m doing the dip stick method my tabs were broken I lined everything up as the video shows car turned on.
Did you pull and reinstall the distributor?
Don't forget to tighten the clamp on the distributor after setting the timing. Ask me how i know....
Haha I've done that one too
The distributor was loose on the pinto day I pulled it from the junkyard and made a track pass
i need help with timing my distributor and balance shaft!
These don't have a balance shaft but the info you need should be in the video.
I mean the auxiliary shaft. I bought a new esslinger shaft and was trying to reference installation videos. Is it OK to run the billet shaft as opposed to stock one?
Yeah The billet shaft is way better just being brand new. My mustang engines run the billet shaft and bronze gear.
I have a twin cam 2.7 ranger
Wow never heard of a 2.7 ranger
Timing for my 1992 Mustang 2.3
And iv seen on some the auxiliary shaft Lully doesn’t matter and some write ups says no
Aux shaft only matters if it has a distributor.
I could NEVER get the belt on with the cam and cranks marked lined up😩.
I know it can be a pain at first. You have to keep rolling the engine over and resetting until you get it.
@@2300gearjammer Found out the timing cover was cracked and not accurate. Did the dipstick method this past evening and everything appear to be running all good
Nice. Glad to hear you found it
I have a 83 ford ranger with the 2.3, it will turn over but not fire any ideas what it might be?
Not much on those. Pull a spark plug & wire and see if it has spark while cranking. Check the carb for fuel.
Does this motor have eight park plugs
I have a 1988 Ford Thunderbird turbo coupe my head gasket just went out do I need to remove the distributor to do a head gasket
No u dont need to, Im doing a head gasket also
As Daniel said, nope. The only reason you might would pull the distributor is if you wanted to setup the aux pulley the way I do.
I was going to see if I could get a 10% on the timing pointer, I want one really bad but money is so tight these days especially if you are building hotrods and race cars, I would have been able to pay full price for the timing tab but someone gave me a free 302 engine today so that took all of my spare cash 😁🤪
I can do 8% and it can in fact be used on that 302. Guaranteed to to add horsepower. All sales final, no guarantees.
@@2300gearjammer Deal, Im going to head on over and order it, but going to hold on to the receipt just incase it doesn't add horsepower like the guarantee states that way I can swap it for one that does. Hopefully it will add 80% more horsepower
Haha perfect. Ill be able to put all my cars through college now.
My 2.3 doesn’t look nothing like yours down by the crank. I have a crank sensor and a metal plate holding my belt guide from coming out
His has the metal plate too. It’s the belt guide. Watch closely and he puts it back on when he’s done.
Awesome video. Thx

Thanks! Sorry to hear that. Follow along my misadventures and you might get smart and junk them all 😅😅
Need 2.3 timing
Timing belt 101 remember doing this for a 91' Mitsubishi truck manual repair book no U tube would say timing chain ⛓️ better choice
I like a timing chain. I don't like timing chain guides 😂
Engine Lada 2108 8v😂
Here in Russia this engine is still in demand and is even tuned)))
I’m surprised that America has its own eight-valve engine, basically now everything is on a sixteen-valve engine or more powerful
Gods Bless U 2300 : )

I would send u mula but if I told you how my life is u how my life is you would send me money😢
Where are all the hot guys ?
Dropping from planes any minute.
They're usually not that hot until you put em over a fire. Of course you can use a bearing heater, but that'll require a whole lot of prep work and cleanup.
Hope that helps!

Useless I pulled my off with my fingers

I have seen that the 2.3 is and also is not an interference engine depening what question i type into google i have a 93 ranger and im about to do the timing belt before it goes was just wondering if it did go would my engine be all jacked up after or can it back in time and slap a new belt on
Hey, what’s up guys have a question I just did my timing belt on my 88 Ford Thunderbird, turbo coupe, and my timing tabs were broken so I did the dipstick method fire The car up runs fine, but after a period of driving. car has a stumbling idle issue like it wants to shut off if the timing is off wouldn’t the car act up cold also.
I replied to the other comment but have you checked the ignition timing?
K I figured it out it in the being ignition control module
what vales should be closed for top dead center own a 1996 Mazda b2300 2.3 duel coil packs
Just on the individual valves I can never remember. Make yourself a little chart with the firing order and you can figure it out
