  • Why do dogs eat poop? Dogs eat poop for a couple reasons: curiosity, habit, nutritional deficiencies, and trauma. You can mange your dog's stool eating with a mix of proper diet and training.
How to stop your dog from eating cat poop:
Treat the cat with a stool eating deterrent to make the poop bitter
Move the litter box to a space where the dog can't access it
How to stop your dog from eating dog poop:
Treat the other dog with a stool eating deterrent to make the poop bitter
Teach your dog a strong "Leave It" command
Monitor your dog while they are outside
Pick up poop as soon as it drops
How to stop your dog from eating their own poop:
Teach your dog a strong "Leave It" command
Monitor your dog while they are outside
Pick up poop as soon as it drops
    Feed a high-quality diet
You may need to take your dog to the vet to check for nutrition deficiencies

Thank you. We’ve blocked off the Kitty litter boxes. We are enrolling in puppy classes. We’ve always adopted more mature dogs.

Girl, it’s like you’re reading my mind. We recently got a golden retriever puppy and she is the cutest thing ever, but the poop eating. Omg 🤮. My other dog never had this issue. 😓

It is definitely one of those things that a lot of people don't want to talk about, yet it is fairly common. I hope this video gave you some insight into why she is doing this and ways to help break the habit!

Yeah I appreciate it. She eats nutrisource chicken and rice dog food. Takes a multivitamin and a glucosamine supplement, so I don’t think she’s lacking any nutrients. I’ve never punished her for deficating in the house or eating her stools. It’s just frustrating. She’s 4 months, so I’m trying to be patient. She also isn’t the strongest at the leave it command yet.

Sounds like she just formed a bad habit. Keep working on it and definitely be proactive in picking up poop as soon as it drops!

Check it for worms, only time mine had an issue with this that was the problem
Get it to a vet, that stuff in stores does NOT work just makes your wallet lighter.

My 3 month old puppy has been doing this occasionally. He seems to be very protective of the stool he wants to eat and even bit my daughter when she tried to pick him up while he was eating a piece. She didn't realize that's what he was doing at the time and she's ok thankfully. Hoping some of this advice helps

So I have 3 dogs and my newest one is almost a year old and eating poop. I’ve never had this issue with a dog before. He will eat his own poop as well as the 2 other dogs - it’s not every single time but quite frequently. I tried doing a stop eating stool powder which doesn’t help much since I have 3 dogs and not planning to feed all of them it. I need to strengthen his leave it command and watch him closer when letting him out. I find it can be extremely difficult to break him of his bad behaviors when not everyone in my household is as consistent as I’d like them to be lol and I’m obviously not home with him 24/7

IS he having to compete with the others for food? Check and make sure there are no worms in the stools.

Can it also be a stress thing? It decreased as our newly rehomed dog (rehomed to us) got used to living with us and got more space to run around. He started at a tie out and then progressed to free range over a few months.

Do you have any advise on a puppy that goes out and is given plenty of time to potty and then after coming inside within about 5-10 min pees or poos inside?

I have also been told by my mom (former vet tech) that it could be a result of being in a puppy mill. Unfortunately, those are some of the hardest reasons to break the habit. Not only because of the harsh punishment thing (since they don't care about the dogs why would they train them ethically), but also mother dogs may eat fecal matter to clean the den. Since puppy mills don't care about cleaning, that is the only choice the mother has. So puppies may have it instilled from birth. So don't buy from puppy mills! So avoid pets stores and shifty breeders (an akc certification is not enough, since they fight against anti-pet mill laws. Ask questions and see where the puppies are living.)

Puppy mills make me see red. Every one Ive seen they are neglected live in filth almost never have paperwork.
TOo many Pure bred type dogs are inbred so bad they develop issues early on.
Always found the runt to be the best, usually get one from a family that cared for them. If the house is a mess, the dog will be too.

My sweet girl has only eaten her poop once, I opened the back door to her holding a turd between her paws chowing down on it with joy in her face lol I stopped her and brought her inside but I'm wondering why she would do this out of no where? Some info; we adopted her at 2ish years old from a shelter. We had her for about 2 years at the time of eating her poop. She has never been interested in the cat poop but she is scared of the floor that the litter box is on. She does "clean up" cat puke if it happens while I'm sleeping I tend to see the left over residue. Also on a sad note at the time of poop eating she had just lost her best friend and shelter kennel mate about 3 weeks prior. I'm wondering if it was a way of coping with the loss of one of our best friends? It's been only 2 months since her passing and my Daisy hasn't eaten it since the first time.

Since it was only the one time it is hard to pin down a "why", but I wouldn't be too concerned since it hasn't continued

My puppy is coming up on 5 months this week, and I have been unsuccessful on breaking her poop eating habit. I gave her coprophagia tablets, and those did help with her eating her own poop. I’ve worked on her “leave it” command (still young so admittedly, this is still a work in progress), I’ve changed her food (Honest Kitchen), and I try to pick up the poop that I see around my apartment’s dog park. Unfortunately, she will find the tiniest, dried-up pieces of dog poop in the mulch and eat it. Also, she has started rushing over to a dog in the park as soon as they start pooping and eating it as it comes out 🤮 Obviously I hold her back, but this is a frustrating process. She’s already had coccidia (the shelter I got her from was treating her for it and never mentioned it, so I didn’t find out until her first vet appointment) and I’m so scared she’ll get it again.
