It’s likely that you’ve witnessed your dog indulging on a not so appetizing snack at least once throughout their life. It’s okay if you don’t want to admit it… but countless numbers of dog owners want to know, “Why does my dog eat poop?” Whether it’s the poop from their housemate, neighbor’s cat, or themselves, the majority of dogs have always been known to enjoy eating poop. This behavior, the consumption of feces, is called coprophagia.
While dogs eating poop may seem like a crazy behavior to humans, dogs see it in a totally different way. We are two completely different species. This is why understanding Natural Dog Behavior and Dog Psychology is so valuable. In this video, Angie explains several possible reasons as to why dogs eat poop, as well some ways that you can stop this behavior. Why do dogs eat poop? Find out now!

We have had 4 dogs. ALL rescued. Close in age at adoption; approximately 2 years of age. Every single one of them had eaten or eats poop!!!! We have a low stress home. They are inside dogs. Well loved!!! Fed high quality kibble like Orijen or comparable.

Hi Angie, You may remember us from 10 years ago when we brought our black Lab to you to work with for behavior problems. I 've had this email in my inbox and finally getting around to viewing your video. Wouldn't you know it, only a week ago we caught our yellow Lab go after poop for the first time in the 3 years we've had him. Thank you for the great information.

I have a 15 week old . Border collie / terrier... I noticed she was eating her poop if I wasn’t around. Still a house dog..My initial thought was that she just saw it as food of different texture and/or She got bored. She eats dry food 3-4 times a day I know she’s not hungry.

Great video ! ! Very informative ! ! Thank you Doctor for sharing this important information. One problem: when talking about Omega 3's for dogs, you say you're going to show us how to get Omega 3's in to their food without buying EXPENSIVE supplements, and then you turn around and sell a REALLY EXPENSIVE dog food. How does this work exactly?

Thanks for this video. My dog likes to eat human poop if she finds it in the mountains. Does for bid help prevent that as well or does it only stop the eating of the dogs own stool?

Different breeds require different nutrition... my Schnoodle can’t eat a high protein high fat diet .... I’d love to feed him something other than the high quality ( read expensive) dog food ... I buy him.. Ive tried giving him treats of carrots apples banana ( in small amounts) peas, he is 11 months old ..... very very picky dog .... he eats dirt and grass and it’s frustrating I’ve not yet caught him eating poop thankfully...

I have a dog like this. ALWAYS hungry. Even had to lose 20lbs! A shelter dog for 4 years, and on his own 2 years prior. The food I give my dogs is expensive and it isn't "doggy fast food", yet he is always trying to steal from the others! And he is the ONLY dog to eat cat litter. I had to raise all the litter boxes up high. So I think you're right about the main culprits being the hungrier dogs, since NO ONE ELSE HAS TRIED THIS. [Frustration rant over. Thanks for reading.]

My dog used to do this only two times and once I started to supervise him and made sure he didn’t eat anything after just two weeks he stopped and he hadn’t done it since. I think this will work as well but I would first just try supervising your dog and playing with him so he is distracted as that is what I did and started to do it daily.

I have a poop eater she's a 5 year old Female Doberman the best way is to clean up their poop so they can't eat it to begin with. I also have a 5 year old Male Rottweiler who isn't a poop eater he's actually a very picky eater he won't even eat his heart guard prevention without me having to put peanut butter on it or hide it in meat. I've read that Females are more prone to poop eating than Males is this true? Thanks for sharing!

it is a great difference between carnivor_poops and herbivore_poops
there is maybe some vitamins left in the herbivore, what the dog can not absorb by himself
what i cant understand, why my dog eat all cat-poops ?

Okay the main problem with all of the remedies so far is an additive to the food well if their not under your control you can't feed every dog this preventive!

The poor diet hypothesis seems wrong; if the dog is being fed dog food that is less nutritional, then why would they want to re-eat it after pooping it out?

Madam, this is a natural thing for dogs to eat pooh. Not all do, but it's part of their instinctual design. It's similar to when we humans have cravings for milk or meat or a certain veggie. Some folks crave chalk. This is a natural way for our bodies to lead us towards what we are deficient in; same for dogs with grass, etc. Look, I'm one of Jehovah's prophets so I get my info straight from the Holy Spirit, as written about in the Holy Bible.

give the doggie 50mL of lactulose syrup. after about 30 min repeat and take it outside, and then give them a warm saline enema, based on 10mL per kg of weight. Let them EMPTY themselves, see if they will want to eat THAT... When they are empty, feed them some healthy probiotica and healthy food, which of daily pieces of pineapple and papaya, not something that make them shit yellow... and the leave it? put some chopped chili and rawit peppers mixed with a spoon of ipecac syrup on their crap: have this ready in a squeeze bottle and hop on the crap... let's see if they eat this ONCE if they will want to try again! itws a very nasty habit, hazardly for humans!!!
