I'm surprised no one is discussing the ways that society and culture create gender and that biology creates sex. Biology is a small part of gender. We see it as natural, which is what makes it so successful. We naturalize gender norms and then try to tie them to biology. Yes, many features flow from biology, but many more flow from culturally-created norms and ideas about what is a man and what is a woman. We also naturalize gender in strict binary terms, when gender is absolutely not that clear. Many, many cultures have existed for centuries that did not conceive of gender in binary terms. The dominance of post-industrial, Western hegemonic ideas has created this strict binary. Has anyone read Judith Butler? While I don't agree with everything she says, I find many of her ideas very helpful in understanding the ways that dominant and powerful cultural systems create identity, from race to gender and beyond.
