- With the release of One Piece Odyssey and a recent One Piece movie, more and more newcomers are gravitating toward the series. I am one such newcomer and I'm upset that I'm so late to the party because One Piece (at least in its first 100 episodes) rules! To make up for lost time, I decided to dive into one of the original One Piece video games in celebration of the launch of One Piece Odyssey. What does this 3D Anime fighter get right and wrong? I set sail and find out.

Agreed! And just imagine what could be done with a grand adventure 2 with today’s technology. The adventure mode could be way more extensive since there’s so many more arcs to cover now than there was when this was made and the roster of characters could be absolutely massive. Ah man it gets me hyped just thinking about the possibilities. For as popular as one piece is we really don’t get many one piece games. Dragonball gets like 1 new game every single year

this shit was so cool. I remember buying this game just because of the cover art. it was like 20 bucks. such a good game. played it over and over again. Loved the pvp mode as well. they just don't make charming/fun games like this anymore.
Played this for the first time last year. I truly loved the campaigns and how you could level your characters how you wanted . Made for very fun Role Play to have zoro have max attack , Usopp have the best item skills, and luffy being a durable tank. It made me actually think about who to take into fights and made the game not as easy as it coulda been. Its all the presentation and fan service I love. Chopper having his walking sound effects is such a small and appreciated detail. A true hidden gem.
The character art also went hard. I remember geeking out getting to play as shanks, mihawk, ace, crocodile, and eneru. eneru was easily my favorite character to play as. so fun.
This is what all the later entries missed: the fun and goofiness of the world. One Piece doesn't do your traditional fights; they get silly and wild with each escalation. Other characters fly in and out during battles.
This was my first One Piece Game. I still have it! I grew up on the 4kids Dub. I started on this, this dub cast was the first dub cast I was introduced to. So this game will forever be nostalgic for me!
Focus on it in portions. You can take breaks in between, but each major portion is more or less a good bulk to binge, and then take a break, I find.

Loved this game! I could play it all day. I played Power Stone few years back, but It reminds me of that kind of gameplay. Glad to know that people still play 🙏🏾
I remember playing this game as a kid I liked Don Krieg so much I overleveled him and he was so strong, I tried doing it again when I picked up the game years later and have no idea how I grinded that much he's so weak when you pick him up 😂😂

A bit of One Piece videogame history and trivia on Grand Adventure: It's one of two "only in America" games that 4Kids commissioned from Bandai. The cover of the game features an image of Luffy done for the PS2 only Japanese fighting game Fighting For One Piece. The islands of Grand Adventure go from Luffy's homeland all the way to Long Ring Long Land, but weirdly Long Ring Long Land's characters are absent from the game.

The first 30 episodes at least are not even close to showing what makes this show great. It is like fans going crazy over the 12 episodes of Chainsaw Man saying it is the best thing when nothing in those 12 episodes really show the real Chainsaw Man experience. So saying in the first episodes of One Piece you fell in love with the series is a bit too much. But I am glad you like it, you are in for a ride.
I played this on GameCube! I loved it. Nowadays I'm working my way through the anime too, and I'm almost up to episode 900! I think this game had a strong influence on my decision to watch the show all the way through, as it left such a good impression of One Piece in my mind...even better than the dubbed episodes I had watched up to that point.
(And yeah, after watching so much of the subbed show, it's a little jarring to hear the 4Kids voices here, but I do find them kind of nostalgic in a way)
I love Sanji's voice in this game I think that's the version that does the Mr.Prince scene the best lmao
That’s exactly how I felt years ago when it was brought up to me and I was like “Pirates that can’t swim, sounds silly” and got into Naruto instead… years later I started watching One Piece and deeply regret pushing it off as long as I did. Such an amazing story
I for one miss the voice actor of Guts as Zoro. He didnt sound bad it was just a bad 4kids script
I don’t care if the 4kids dub is “bad” the rap makes up for it all. Plus if you get mad at the One Piece dub name changes you have to get mad at Yugioh too. You can’t be mad at one and ok with another.
I remember being confused as to who 2 bon clay was when I unlocked him because he didn’t air on tv at the time of this games release lol.
I love Luffy because despite how powerful he is and despite how often everything comes down to him, he isn’t unassailable and doesn’t just ALWAYS pull out a new power up every time he fights an arc villain. Dude relys SO DAMN HEAVY on his crew which he should. He is a pirate and he has an actual crew. Secondly, everything he does, even the ones that are new forms TEND to be less of a power up and more a creative change to how he uses his powers and shows again that he earns everything he does.
It is so much fun and I still say this is the best voice acting for one piece. I understand getting new people to match better with the manga and make it less PG but come on the guy voicing Sanji is phenomenal.
I played this game so hard that I had unlocked it to 100% before the internet was a thing. I had to endure Sanji's nasal voice but overall it was a fun game.
There’s a ton of filler in one piece anime but what sucks is they blend it in with vital stuff so you can’t skip it haha.
Zoro’s name change was actually a change done by Viz when they localized the manga to avoid getting sued by Zorro’s owners. It is still Zolo being used in the official English manga

Yeah, I just got Volume 101 as a Christmas gift and they still use Zolo. Not a huge deal, my brain just reads its Zoro.

They actually used Zoro in early Viz volumes, once 4KIDS licensed it they switched to Zolo.
YO I NEVER KNEW THEY MADE A SEQUEL TO THAT ONE PIECE ARENA FIGHTER!!! hot damn i have so much nostalgia for the *objectively* best voice cast, the 4Kids dub. New Jersey Sanji and southern bell Nico Robin (for better or worse) shaped my idea of good voice acting and i wouldnt have it any other way
Would LOVE to see more One Piece Content (its my absolute fave IP). Looking forward to hearing more from you about it as you make your way thru the series. If ever you get the urge, the Manga is 1000x better than the anime (and I love the anime) so you should defonitely read it atvleast once in your life

I'm 1,000+ episodes into this series, started when it was first airing over 20 years ago but I could never get into any of the games, especially this new one. It's turn-based.

One piece as an anime or manga, should never really be approached with a "completion" mindset. Its a literal adventure/journey across a fleshed out and Full world. Take your time, smell the roses. And you'll appreciate the series all the more. 1000 episodes is not the hurdle, its that there's 1000+ episodes of our favorite story that just keeps on going. Getting better, and better, and better.
On a side note , im very happy you love One Piece already so early. I cant imagine your love for it when you are done with it and caught up haha
It is just what you’re used to and what you grew up with. I grew up with the four kids but personally, I thinkSanji‘s voice with the southern draw is the one that just sucks having changed the most. I think he was great.
I have NEVER played a One Piece game to completion. I, like you, have gotten into the anime recently for content creation and it's absolututely phenominal (yes, Arlong Park is the best!) But I really want to play some eventually, I think I'll started with Oddyssey and go back through the best written ones.
Be careful with Odyssey. The whole premise is going back through old arcs but with all the strawhats. So there's probably gonna be quite a bit of spoilers.
Saying no fillers, just wait til Dressrosa Arc where 10 minutes is literally repeats of the last episodes, outside that I agree to a full amount.
so i'm 1 minuet into the video and I just wanted to say, as a One Piece fan who caught up a few years ago, I completely recommend taking you time on the series and not binging through it all like crazy. Enjoy the adventure. One Piece should be considered a marathon, not a race. You gotta pace yourself. There is allot to soak in, and some things that don't seem important at all right now will blind side you later if your rushing. Take breaks if you need to, and remember you can always come back to it later!

One of the best OP game ever. Gameplay is absurd for a Fighter game, the arenas are interactive, good movepool for the characters and nice combos and interactions with the sorroundings. The only downside is the absence of Wiper, Aokiji and Foxy (there were only available in a Japanese version)

This game was so much fun, not even the shit voice acting could ruin it for me. Always loved using Chopper's Walk Point move were he zigzags across the stage to catch my opponents off guard. Good times.

People get too caught up on trying to catch up. Just gotta take it slow and enjoy it. I've been reading one piece for years at this point and i kinda forgot everything so im going back and rereading the whole thing from the start. Im currently on chapter 119 and have fallen in love with OP all over again.
Speaking of Nami being absolutely busted if you max out her special Stat her tornado super just SHREDS EVERYTHING. She had to be banned
Funny enough, i never played nami much because I thought she was the second worst character. Luffy and Usopp had better range, and Zolo/Zorro had better damage and chopper despite being an odd fighter had interesting moves. Zolo/Zorro worked amazing as a glass canon going all in on attack/super, and certain AI get completely tripped up into an easy spam loop of shuriken shooting stars from Usopp. At least that's my experience with the strawhat crew.
Nami is good, but not ban-worthy. Ace, Buggy, Robin and Kuro are fairly impossible to get away from once you're trapped in a combo and Eneru is just stupid. Eneru, Buggy and Robin in particular might be the most overpowered.
@@dontegraves5051 The true most OP character is Wapol. His ability "Wapol House" is the most overpowered move. The moment he has access to it, he can completely and utterly bulldoze any foe in an one on one battle. It's unblockable, starts up instantly where it can't be interrupted, nearly invincible while he's doing it, and he can control where it moves. When it does hit, it acts like Mr.4's bat, knocking the opponent away and they lose their treasure, which you can collect to fill your meter just enough to do it again.
@@064razor Wapol House is certainly his best Super, but Wapol himself is too big and slow to do much to anyone in the roster. Especially if he gets caught in juggles. At least you can pick any support character to help, but without that, he sucks. The Chomp ability is at least one of the most interesting abilities in the game since it can turn the weaker items into bona fide combat tools. I don't recall Wapol House being unblockable but I may re-check that. It is still good though. But so many other characters are better.Buggy and Eneru can touch you once and lock you into combos and Robin doesn't even need to be anywhere near you to deal damage.
@@dontegraves5051 Certain loops/infinite combos are moves AI struggle against at lower levels, but at higher difficulties, they'll learn to parry strikes outright. This is why you can't get away with Sanji or Mr. 2 Bon Clay's main spam loop combo once the hard mode kicks in. Some characters that can hold their own quite well out of sheer ability and skill on the hardest modes are chaser/smoker, mihawk, luffy, eneru, zolo/zoro, and crocodile. Those guys are truly strong

Not sure if anyone answered this for you, but the reason you hear Dragon Ball actors in One Piece is funimation is based out of Dallas, at the time actors had to be local or at least able to come to Dallas to record. This isn’t the case now, but thats why so many of Funimation licensed anime had the same actors.

Don't worry Matty it's not just you with the 4kids voices. A lot of them aren't very good, but I personally blame their direction, and watered down script. Because 4kids did have good voice actors. I think if Marc Diraison (Zoro) was kept on, he could have been better than Chris Sabat. He's actually the most Iconic English voice for Guts (Berserk), and is honestly the best for Guts. He's really the big stand out of all the 4kids voices for One Piece. Chris Sabat is still amazing as Zoro, it's just a little what if I think about sometimes. I'm glad to hear some praise for their English dub at all really. Because it's honestly great. Also just enjoy the ride of One Piece. It's what makes the series great, not the end goal.

Do not worry about how far into One Piece you are ... 100 episodes is VERY far considering how many characters you meet and how many plot points are established by then ... You're well into the story already enjoy the ride and adventure!
In the english manga, Zoro is actually "Zolo" to always remind fans of the 4kids dub (which I was introduced to the series with and very much love).
I don't know if you saw clips of the 4Kids dub, but I can imagine you yelling Luffy the Corgi's name like Zoro did to Luffy in Whiskey Peak.
When you get far enough One Piece pirate warriors 3 is really good at having you fight nameless baddies until you get to the main fight while still keeping it fun. Every time you get to the big bad it feels like a huge deal. :)
I grew up with this being one off my First Games luckily. As a 6 year old I saved for it 😭

This game was so underrated
One game I would recommend especially if you this early in the series is One Piece Round the Land for the PS2. It's a 2D plattformer (or 2D and a half if you like) with 3D graphics and environments. It goes up to the end of Skypiea so it should be right up your alley if you've covered that ground. The game itself is a lot of fun and actually is the first to implement the mechanics you described in your Odyssey review. I'm talking about some paths being blocked off until you come back with a different character.
For me personally this is by far my favorite One Piece game as it is just so much fun and you can tell it was done not as a cash crab but by someone loving the series. Sure it might be dated by todays standards but I think that someone like you, who appreciates retro games, will totally get some enjoyment out of it. I don't know if it was released in the states though as I played the European version we had there.
Also another game I liked is Pirates Carnival for the PS2. It's pretty much Mario Party in a One Piece setting, where they actually managed to the vast majority of minigames something that actually happened in the series, which is an amazing feat if you ask me. However that one was get's the credit it deserves and I don't know why. If you ever get your hand on it, I'd like to hear your take on it. To this day I don't get why people say that this game fails as a party game.
I would love that. As a kid i owened Onepiece grand adventure and round the land and with its opening and different character traits that result in game mechanics, it was my favourite one pice game. It was beautiful and creative and had a good story sum up till skypea. I spend countless hours to climd the bounty letter for nami XD

I would still say go for it if you have a PS2 that would play games that are not your region. The PS2 era One Piece games focus more on the fun of letting you control your favorite characters in iconic locations rather than the modern games that don't really know what to do with the IP.
The story in Round the Land is really miniscule. Basically the Strawhats land on a party island, where they can run around and collect treasure (and balloons) to get the big treasure at the end. There's no complex reason why they encounter their old adversaries on places that are a not to classic locations. It just happens. And it's a crapton of fun.
The only downside is that you would perhaps miss out on unique conversations. Like if your main is Chopper and you start the Buggy boss battle both Chopper and Buggy will comment on each others noses which is a spicy subject for both of them.
I came to warn you NOT TO PLAY OP ODESSY FOR SPOILER PURPOSES,the OP story is so well knitted the littlest thing is like a spoiler,played Pirate Warriors and somehow still got spoiled just by a little

Played this game when i was younger before i knew it was a anime and now im caught up to the anime, fun game over all and actually challenging at times within the 5 different campaigns

I just bought this. My dad, brother, and I sunk countless hours into this game. Yes, the va is goofy. But it makes me laugh stupid hearing things like Sanji's "you want a piece of me?"
Hear me out.. i can’t dislike the 4kids dub. As a plus, thanks for giving the series a chance XD. Yeah it’s baffling with the huge amount of episodes, but most should give it a chance
Once you get more caught up to the show I would love to see you play the other games. I just picked up Odyssey and I'm having a good time I just wish it wasn't so easy. I highly recommend one piece burning blood I think it's a great fighting game but make sure you're caught up to at least time skip before you play.
You got a good fiance if she got you into one piece. I actually did the same thing to mine. I got to drum island and she started asking questions and I was like you like this don't you. Now we're both at the beginning of wano. Oh yeah this was also her first anime
Man I remember getting this game from gamestop the day it came out. Makes me feel old. Even with the 4kids voice I still liked this game and the one before it Grand Battle.
I honestly love Sanji's 4kids dub. It's so distinguishable. You can't argue it compared to funimation, it's genetically superior.
It's ironic that they used the 4Kids voices and that Crocodile and Robin are in this game, considering they don't even make it to Alabasta in the 4Kids dub
The 4kids dub finished Alabasta and was going to enter Skypeia (evident by the fact that Eneru and Ohm had a voice actor) but 4kids lost the license at the end of Jaya.
A new One Piece GA would be so legit due to the potential roster expansion. Blackbeard, Moria, Perona, Brook, Celestial Dragon, Katakuri, Carrot, etc. I'm also itching for a Amazon Lily stage.
What I wouldn’t give to be able to watch One Piece for the first time all over again. I started it in 2021 and now I’m caught up and while I love where the story is right now- I almost wish I had taken longer to get here.
I thought the second time I read/watched it was better cuz there was so many references and stuff I could pick up on now.
I'd love if you can review the old "Unlimited Adventure/Cruise/Red" One Piece games on the Wii and PS3.
They still have what I consider to be the most original setting and story in all of its games, it's so cool, Oda did a fantastic job with the story of this one, and how you can play with all the strawhats and explore multiple regions, collecting materials for tools to create and enhance , while making sure the Thousand Sunny is expanding and unlocking more options to use was really neat and added a lot of life to it.
I still view them as my favorite One Piece games ever. Odyssey looks like it's gonna really good, so I'm excited for that as well.

Man! this is a nostalgia trip for me. I played this game when so I was so young and still not good in English (English is not my first language.)
I remember that I found some kind of exploit when I played as Ace that let me 1 shot opponent. IIRC, if you use 1 his super attack that he makes a fire wall that expands and push outward very near the opponent, the opponent will take full damage of condensed fire wall. Letting you win easily.
I'm a longtime OP fan who read the manga before 4kids started butchering the anime, so I initially avoided these games until I bought a new copy of Grand Battle a few years later on discount. I later bought the original Japanese version Grand Battle Rush so I could play without muting it. There's content in Rush that was stripped out of the US version because the anime/manga was so far behind when it came out.
Grand Battle started on the PSOne but the third and fourth games were Power Stone clones on PS2/GC and I imported both. Grand Adventure was US exclusive and serves as an enhanced version of Grand Battle Rush, but it still lacks some content. I bought a cheap, ragged copy at GameStop.
Sufficed to say I loved them as a fan more than as great games.
There's a GBA game exclusive to the US that covers the entire East Blue Saga released with Grand Battle, simply called "One Piece" that you should definitely check out. It's a side scroller that limits you to Luffy, but it's a solid game. It's possibly the only good thing 4kids did for the series.
I guess the Chibi designs were made that way because of the limitations of the hardware at the time for a 3D battle game with a lot of stuff happening at the same time. The gameplay is really fun tho. Would be cool to see a modern iteration of this kind of game without the Chibi designs and more depth in the combat. But this game was my childhood anyway, me and my cousins play it a lot on GameCube

Grand Battle was the only One Piece game I ever played until World Seeker came out.
fun story about this game i bought it when i was a kid from gamestop for the gamecube. the gamestop guy put grand battle in the case tho i ended up noticing a few days later told my grandpa and we took it back and got the grand adventure game. the reason i noticed was because on the back of the case it shows you racing the chickens and a few other characters that aren't in grand battle and i was like how do i unlock this stuff because grand battle was a relatively short game.
