1974 Cyprus Coup - Turkish Invasion Looms in Tense Reports on Mounting Crisis (1974)

  • On 17 July 1974, two days after being overthrown in a military coup d'etat led by the Cypriot National Guard, deposed President of Cyprus Archbishop Makarios III held a press conference in London. Having fled to the UK with British assistance, Makarios sought to denounce the Greek-sponsored coup as a foreign invasion, while asserting his status as the legitimate ruler of Cyprus. While Makarios told reporters that he did not yet wish for military assistance from Britain or Turkey, Turkish forces were already mobilising to intervene. Indeed, ITN filmed the Turkish prime minister, Bülent Ecevit, arriving at Downing Street for an urgent audience with Harold Wilson the same day Makarios paid his own visit to Number 10.
    ITN also interviewed Kyriakos Palos, the UK chairman of the Ethniki Organosis Kyprion Agoniston B (EOKA-B), a Greek Cypriot paramilitary organisation dedicated to achieving enosis (union) between Cyprus and Greece. Palos justified the coup on the basis that Makarios was interested not in ruling Cyprus but in promoting his "personal cult", aided by repressive state security organs. Palos also argued that time would see the Cypriot people come out in support of the coup. The following day in Paris, ITN's Jon Lander interviewed UK foreign secretary James Callaghan about the unfolding crisis. Callaghan described his efforts at diplomacy as war loomed over the eastern Mediterranean, emphasising the UK's recognition of the deposed Makarios III as the legitimate Cypriot president, and warning that he believed the crisis would deteriorate further before things improved.

    Interestingly, or let's say, unfortunately, wherever the Imperialist English went, they left behind cartographical and political problems.
    Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan, Cyprus between the Turks and the Greeks, Rhodesia under Smith, the Palestinian problem due to the Belfour declaration which pitted the Jews against the Arabs, and Iraq and Kuwait Boundary line confrontations, which exist even today.
    I can cite several other examples from Africa, the Middle East and SE Asia too.
    So, most of the Geopolitics of the Cold War was dominated by the English Imperial Designs to use the divide-and-rule policy which failed everywhere after they set those nations or regions free.

    Yes for those that don’t know or pretend. Turkey intervention was for the peace of the island. Greek and Turkish Cypriots. If turkey never intervened its quite obvious what the result would’ve been. In history there is no turning back. And cannot change it but except the circumstances it evolved to. Since the partion and TRNC was declared seems like the problem is solved and solution is right in front of our eyes. No war, no issues, mutual respect whether they like it or not. It’s like a relationship. You may not love each other however mutual respect is the way forward. All the things in between are propaganda and misinformation. It’s up to Greek Cypriots to except this and move forward and build economic bridge with Turkish Cypriots. Everything else is false dream and will never become a reality.

    It is clear that all the blame lies with Greece. But for some reason the whole world blames Turkey. The reason for this is that the Greeks knew how to cry and make propaganda. • @Agamemnon1002

      Yes, the blame lies with Greece at the time, and Turkey had a right to intervene under the guarantor treaty to restore the status quo, but NOT to occupy and ethnicaly cleanse the north of Cyprus so that it then became an invasion.

    • @gpapa31
      @gpapa31 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@Agamemnon1002exactly that. I don’t think the world objects to Turkey’s intervention(Attila 1) as it was rightfully justified by the London/Zurich agreement to bring stability to the island after the illegal coup by the Greek junta.Followed by ceasefire (as it happened) and the illegal administration overthrown the UN takes over and a solution is found with the guarantors (Greece, Turkey, Britain) and Cyprus over discussions. The conquest (Attila 2) and unjustified occupation, to this day, of 36% of the island is the part the world is against and therefore not recognise as illegal.
      Turkey was found guilty by the European Commission of Human Rights for displacement of persons, deprivation of liberty, ill treatment, deprivation of life and deprivation of possessions. The Turkish policy of violently forcing a third of the island's Greek population from their homes in the occupied North, preventing their return and settling Turks from mainland Turkey is considered an example of ethnic cleansing.

      @@gpapa31what did the Turks do following the war, living on southern side?
      If an ethnic cleansing happened at all, it happened on both sides. Like the one during 1923-24 period btw Turkey & Greece.
      To blame Turkish side, doing ethnic cleansing, is only an effort to cover the real ethnic cleansing and massacres between 1963 & 74 by greek fascists.
      By the way, following first stage of war, many negotiations held in Geneva without a reasonable result. And Turkish military was squeezed in a very small part of island. This was not safe at all both for militarist as well as turkish cıvıl people on the island. Consequently, your comment has too many lies inside.

    • @gpapa31
      @gpapa31 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@bhg6gs first of all why are you mixing incidents that have nothing to do with Cyprus (eg: 1923?). You don’t see me bringing 1955 Istanbul genocide and cleansing into the mix?
      Obscene actions were performed by both sides in Cyprus. The Greeks had EOKA B, a terrorist organisation that as you said was attacking Turkish communities for nearly a decade to accomplish ENOSIS (unification with Greece) and was funded by the Greek military junta. And the Turks had TMT (Türk Mukavemet Teşkilatı) an ethno-nationalist organization, with a right-wing stance-which was funded and supported illegally by Turkey in an attempt to oppose EOKA, create a division and eventually partition of the island. Both groups are responsible for atrocities. To make the argument that Turkey’s disobedience to the ceasefire and move to Attila 2 is justified due to past actions is absurd, firstly because both sides had blood on their hands and second, and most important, two wrongs don’t make it right. After all the London-Zurich treaty is clear on the matter of intervention and there’s zero ambiguity. So occupation and settlement is a clear breach and illegal to this day no matter how you want to slice it. That’s why Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to this day is a de facto state and is recognised globally by absolutely no one but Turkey.

    • @bhg6gs
      @bhg6gs หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@gpapa31 I mentioned 1923 matter not to attack you, be calm. İt was just an example of people's exchange (i do not know the appropriate definition for that action, sorry), as much possible as in peace. So your prejudice takes you to wrong paths.
      So, at the end there was no ethnic cleansing in cyprus by the Turks. Besides TMT was only a defence organisation. When you have only 25% of population,, or maybe less, you can not attack the rest, can you? What you say is nonsense.
      Please see the map of the area occupied by Turkish troops, you will see a small triangle. Military wise, this is not a safe heaven at all. 4 weeks long following first Turkish attack, there were negotiations in Geneva. I see that you don"t want to remember these meetings. When Turkish troops were in a weak position, why did not greeks accept any solution in Geneva. Because they wanted the whole island without a single Turk, as they did ever since 1953. At the end Turkish troops attacked much larger areas and ocuupied succesfully. Please remember the greeks were the coup-makers, whici threw xyprus constitution inti garbage. Now you claim that, you want the previous position back. Sorry too many things happened since that fascist coup in Cyprus.
      Last note: İstanbul incidents in 1955 (you must be living in another world to call that genocide, you better visit a psychiatrist), were not a genocide. Only 6 turkish citizen greeks were murdered. This was a racist crime, which can not be forgiven, but yet it was not a genocide, you fool.

During and after the actual operation The Turks where in matters where they had rightful cause with some politicians incompetent attitudes and demands in many agreements, meetings and negotiations over the years.
