Turkish Invasion of Cyprus - Battle Footage Captures First Days of Fighting (1974)

  • On 20 July 1974, Turkish forces invaded Cyprus by sea and air. Codenamed Operation Atilla, the attack came five days after the Greek-sponsored Cypriot coup d'état on 15 July, and led to the partition of Cyprus along the UN-monitored Green Line, which still divides Cyprus between the south and the Turkish-occupied north to this day.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the invasion, ITN Archive presents a number of reports covering the first three days of the conflict. ITN's Michael Nicholson was at the scene on 20 July when Turkish paratroopers dropped onto the open plains near Gönyeli, on the road between the capital, Nicosia, and the coastal city of Kyrenia. Meanwhile, ITN's Christopher Wain reported on the first day of fighting in Nicosia, from inside the besieged Ledra Palace Hotel. On 21 July, Nicholson reported on the large-scale evacuation under United Nations protection of foreign nationals from Cyprus, some of whom were interviewed the next day by Mark Andrews as they arrived in London. On 22 July, Nicholson reported on the weekend's fighting in Nicosia, and shared the dramatic story of how he and camera operators Alan Downes and Robert "Bob" Hammond were caught in crossfire before being saved by a UN patrol. Lastly, on 22 July, Chris Wain reported from a Turkish refugee camp near the British military base in Episkopi. Wain saw the camp as a reminder not only of the human cost of the conflict but also of the depth of British involvement in the Cyprus crisis.

A bit of Cyprus history based on encyclopedic facts:
1571 - The Ottomans capture the island from the Venetians.
1877 - The island remains under Ottoman rule until Sultan Abdul Hamid II leases the island to Queen Victoria in 1878.
1878 - The British Empire assumes the provisional administration of Cyprus, making it a British Protectorate.
1914 - The Ottomans join the Central Powers, entering World War I, and Britain declares the complete annexation of Cyprus into the British Empire.
1955 - The Greek EOKA launches an insurgency and terrorist campaign against the legitimate British rule with the aim of uniting Cyprus with mainland Greece.
1960 - Cyprus is granted independence and declared a Republic with 77.1% Greeks and 18.2% Turks.
1963 - Intercommunal violence erupts on 21 December 1963 when the Greek Cypriot leadership believes that the rights given to Turkish Cypriots under the 1960 constitution are too extensive and designs the Akritas plan, which aims at reforming the constitution in favor of Greek Cypriots.
1964 - The violence results in the death of 364 Turkish and 174 Greek Cypriots, the destruction of 109 Turkish Cypriot or mixed villages, and the displacement of 25,000-30,000 Turkish Cypriots. The crisis results in the end of Turkish Cypriot involvement in the administration and their claim that it has lost its legitimacy.
1964 - Turkey threatens to intervene in Cyprus in response to the continuing Cypriot intercommunal violence.
1965 - Makarios and the Greek prime minister Georgios Papandreou agree that enosis should be the ultimate aim and King Constantine wishes Cyprus "a speedy union with the mother country". Greece dispatches 10,000 troops to Cyprus to counter a possible Turkish invasion.
1974 - The Greek military junta under Dimitrios Ioannides carries out a coup d'état in Cyprus to unite the island with Greece. The coup ousts president Makarios III and replaces him with pro-enosis nationalist Nikos Sampson.
1974 - Turkey launches Operation Atilla and captures one-third of the island.
1983 - Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas proclaims the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

How these Globalist CABALIST bastards twists the facts as it suits them, they have been doing this for centuries but they forgotten one thing, young generations don't know the history but they question it now, just like Palestinian issue.
Cyprus was Ottoman rule since 1571.It was rented to British 1878 as they were allies against Russians.Turks and greeks were living in peace and harmony .Brits done it again,AS they did where ever they went they have created divisions between natives, changed the demographics of that country. They imported many greek speaking people all around the medittranian to make Turks minority, taking their lands and giving it to them .HOW THEY DONE IT IN PALESTINE,THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY DONE IN CYPRUS TOO...
Greeks trIed to massacre Turkish people to join Cyprus to Greece 1963 ,Turkiye had to act as it was one of the quarantors 1974 and there is peace in Cyprus since then.

The first secret negotiations for Eoka, a terrorist organization established to destroy the Turkish people in Cyprus and bind the island to Greece, were held in Athens on July 2, 1952, under the chairmanship of Makarios.
Following these meetings, a "revolutionary council" was established on March 7, 1953, and the founders of this council took the following secret oath for enosis:
"I swear before God to keep what I know and will know about the Enosis case a secret, even under torture and at the cost of my life. I will obey all orders given to me without question."
In the first months of 1954, secret arms shipments to Cyprus began with the knowledge of the Greek government, and the terrorist named Grivas secretly landed on the island on 9 November 1954.
Eoka upon the directive of Greek Foreign Minister Stefanoplus; It officially went into action by detonating its first bombs on April 1, 1951.
The purpose of eoka; His aim was first to expel the British from the island, and then to destroy the Turkish people with a total destruction move and to connect the island to Greece. However, without waiting for the British to leave the island, attacks against the Turks began on June 21, 1955.
Grivas, who writes in his memoirs that he decided to train and arm the youth organization called Peon, founded by Makarios on 22 November 1954, thus emphasizes that Makarios was behind Eoka. It is known that Makarios resolved the issue with Greek officials during his various visits to Athens.
In his letter dated June 4, 1959, Grivas states that Makarios invited him to Cyprus to manage Eoka, and explains that the church provided financial aid to purchase weapons for the terrorist organization.
Makarios, who summoned Grivas on March 27, 1955, personally gave the order to take action.
Learning that Makarios was the political leader of Eoka, the British arrested him on March 9, 1956 and exiled him to the Seychelles.
Eoka militants, who massacred hundreds of Turks, 100 British and hundreds of Greeks during their action, destroyed 30 Turkish villages and caused the Turks living there to migrate.
Eoka started attacking again in 1963 and destroyed 103 Turkish villages and killed more than 500 Turks; It forced tens of thousands of Turks to migrate.
Eoka, who appeared under the name Eoka-B during the Sampson coup on July 15, 1974, this time turned his weapons against his own people and massacred 2,000 Greeks.
That's why the Republic of Türkiye named the operation it carried out on the island as "Cyprus Peace Operation". Türkiye saved not only the Turkish Cypriots, but also the innocent peaceful Greeks!

Turkish invasion? The name of the operation is definitely not Atilla. The EOKA terrorist group massacred Turkish civilians for a long time. With the coup that took place with the Megali Idea and the idea of Greater Greece: "There was a coup in our country. That's why we may have killed a few more Turks." They had a goal to completely eliminate the Turks in Cyprus with a diplomatic game like this. The name of the operation is "Cyprus Peace Operation." Throughout the operation, the British provided all they could to the Greeks with humanitarian aid, but they were still unsuccessful. In fact, 10,000 Turkish civilians were trapped in a castle for 2 months. The truth will surely come out.

So the fly is small and if it lands on the plate, you will be sick to your stomach. This is not an insult, it is a Turkish expression. Whenever states such as England, France, and Russia were in diplomatic difficulty throughout history, they supported the provocative activities of Armenians and Greeks, who were minorities in Turkish lands. He used them as a weapon of sociological attack. Those who have made and repeated this mistake many times throughout history must have risked the consequences. And unfortunately, the babies slaughtered in bathtubs in Cyprus, the doctor and his family, and the EOKA murders committed in hundreds of villages are a great reason for us to do what is necessary to protect our brothers and sisters. Our problem is not dry nationalism, racism or imperial politics. If you look at our philosophy and belief, in accordance with the commandments of Islam, which is the last and true religion, we believe in all the prophets, including the Prophet Jesus, the Prophet Moses, Joseph, Abraham (peace be upon them all), and the last and the rules of which are valid and uncorrupted, the Prophet Muhammad Mustafa ( Peace and blessings be upon him.) is his religion. While some people do not know what a toilet is, we have established foundations to meet the needs of flying storks, not an unjust evil to a human being. Unfortunately, your neighbor's mother badmouths you and your family to her child every day and makes them feel hostility towards you. You can't hug when he comes at you to attack. Firstly, in the late 1940's and early fifties, Papagos, the then Prime Minister of Greece told Makarios that Greece was not interested in Enosis (Union) with Cyprus. It was not desired by the UK/US and as Greece had two lungs, one British and the other American, it was not possible. This then set the scene for pseudo independence. As for killing Turks, please tell me how many Turkish speaking Cypriots were murdered by TMT, because they had Greek speaking friends and then claimed it was the "Greeks" that did it. Can you answer that question?

This was not an invasion. It intervened to protect the Turks from the massacres of the Greeks, using its rights as a guarantor based on international agreements. Everything was completely legal, based on international agreements.
What makes England a rich country are the colonies and the trade routes it reaches to colonies. The Suez Canal is one of the most important of these. When Egypt took the Suez Canal from the British company and made it national, England bombed the region with planes taking off from Cyprus. Cyprus is in a very important location.
The 1950s and 1960s were a period when the colonies that gained their independence came under the wings of the USSR. Cyprus was an england colonie and too important to be given to the Russians due to its location. England saw this and lit the fuse with the events of September 6-7 in 1955. Then, it pitted the two communities against each other in Cyprus with BBC broadcasts and propaganda. The Greeks committed massacres against the Turks. and Ecevit decided to intervene militarily in Cyprus to save turks.( while he was in England.)
As a result of all this, an island with two hostile communities, one of which would definitely be an ally of the British, was formed and England had two bases in the south of the island to control the Suez Canal.

To render the commentary historically accurate it must be stated that the Greek Cypriot National Guard forces, under strict orders form the Greek military government in Greece mainland, were forbitten from deploying and taking action against the invading Turkish army at the crucial initial stages of the invasion operation. The sporadic return of fire from Greek Cypriot forces occurred far too late and after the Turkish army had established a firm foothold on the island, had managed to land tanks and heavy weaponry, and after numbers of the National Guard artillery and armoured vehicles had been deliberately left exposed to be destroyed by the Turkish air-bombing. A treacherous plan had been laid and executed at the grave expense of the GCs aiming to make the Turkish advance on the island a walk in the park.

Does anyone know what Operation Sunshine is, or was? It is, or was, an MI6 operation in Cyprus back in 1959. The details are revealed in the enlightening research of Stephen Dorril under the title “MI6-Inside the Covert World of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service.”
The summary is as follows: Cyprus was drawn into ethnic conflict in the late 1950s. Armed, right-wing Greek bands were carrying out attacks against British rule on the island and against Turkish civilians - something that would be named as an attempt at ethnic cleansing in today’s world. In response, Turkey secretly helped an embryonic resistance among Turkish Cypriots, organizing and arming them.
The Brits decided to take effective steps. MI6 started to tap some VIP telephones, relying on the cutting-edge technology of the day in order to prevent further killings and provide a basis for a settlement between Greek and Turkish Cypriots. The names included the Greek leader, Archbishop Marakios III. While eavesdropping on Makarios’ lines in order to obtain some political and military information, they recorded some other stuff by mistake - “Rather unusual homosexual proclivities,” as described by the book.
That was in 1958 and when Makarios resisted signing an agreement with Turkish Cypriots under the guarantee of Britain, Turkey and Greece in 1959 in Zurich, he had a visitor in his hotel room with some information to share. Makarios changed his mind overnight, came down to the hotel lobby where his Turkish counterpart Fazıl Küçük was waiting and signed the first treaty on Cyprus which lead the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus in 1960.
That was Operation Sunshine. That is a part of the background story about how the Republic of Cyprus with Makarios as the president and Küçük as the deputy president was established.
That British-made fragile structure began to fall apart a few years later, ultimately leading to theTurkish military intervention which divided Cyprus into two in 1974.

The legitimate reason for the Turkish Peace Operation in Cyprus was the increasing oppression and malicious actions against the Turkish community living there. In 1974, the coup carried out by the Greek National Guard in Cyprus, supported by Greece, endangered the lives of the Turkish community on the island and created the risk of massacre. Turkey, based on the 1960 Guarantee Agreements, acted on July 20, 1974, to ensure the security of the Turkish Cypriots and to restore constitutional order.

One sided as usual... I still don't understand the support of British to Turkish (I guess, interests above all) and the reporting concept within the entire video. Most of the important information was left out. And the funny thing is that, Turkish commenters are the ones complaining for biased opinions! Again!

Turkey invaded Cyprus during a time of civil unrest, following a coup attempt within the Greek Cypriot leadership. Initially, Turkish Cypriots showed little interest, with Rauf Denktaş (the elected vice president of the Republic of Cyprus) calling the situation 'an internal affair of the Greeks.' However, by the end of the next day, Turkey saw this as opportunity and a pretext for an invasion. Five days after the U.S./Greek backed coup against the pro-Soviet Greek Cypriot President Makarios, Turkey invaded…not to protect the republic but to partition it, which was against the Zurich agreements. This reignited intercommunal violence between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots for the first time since 1967 and ended a relatively peaceful period of seven years. In the days between the coup against Makarios and the invasion, there had been no violence between the communities, but Turkey’s actions escalated the conflict into a mess, with paramilitary TC and GC groups attacking each other in the fog of war.
Just to highlight, all EOKA B thugs were in prison for several years already by Makarios until Turkey’s invasion. Findings from the exhumation of mass graves of executed Greeks and Turks show that more massacres were committed against GC civilians by TMT thugs paramilitary groups before and after the invasion. Given that GCs made up 82% of the island’s population, this highlights the aggression committed by the 18% minority.

    • @hakant.7242
      @hakant.7242 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      yes.

So please tell us all what these other Empires gave the world? the British Empire gave the world all those inventions that made life easier, The Industrial revolution, Ended Slavery, spread Democracy and Laws that countries still follow now, so come on tell us all what all these other Empires did? and you say English really do you mean British? The Uk was invaded many times by Celts, Romans, Saxons, Jutes, Angles, Vikings, Normans and many others have tried yet we don't moan and cry about things that happened hundreds of years ago. The heading was even biased, let alone the video. How was it an invasion when Türkiye went there to save the Turkish people from the terrorists that started this?. Also, where is the footage of the torture and murder of the women and children committed by the greeks? And don't forget Türkiye was and is a guarantor defending the Cypriot Turks, so we had every right to move in. All I can say is they are lucky we only went there to protect the Turks, not to invade if we did they would have had to swim all the way to athhens.
