    Somewhere there are some Cat mechanics looking down at the care and respect you gave to their work from decades ago. Well done. Excellent series...

    This was an incredible series Squatch! I watched every video on 5j1113 and really enjoyed every one. You quite literally took this old machine from rags to riches. And the end result is a very well dressed d2 that looks it's age but is bran new under its skin. The name Swamp Angle is a great tribute to your father's memories of times past. Congratulations on this one off build Toby and thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Cheers and looking forward to your next project.

    I’ll never ever rebuild a D2 but what I will remember about this project is the incredible amount of detail Squatch kept in the ever present 3 ring binder. Original part numbers from Cat literature along with replacement part numbers as well as rehabbing all the parts down to the detail of how to clean, sort, and store nuts and bolts. Incredible! Thank you Squatch253 and Squatch Sr. ( Oh and I also learned to never ever re-use a fold over lock!)

      Thank you for sharing your adventure. I’m a lifelong woodworker who started out using hand tools that I find to the farm sales. I also was able to get my retirement from my employer and the same time. So happy that you’re able to have your father with you in your journey. One of my dad’s favorite memories was when I started making my own money. He would tell me to spend 20 bucks first on my tools. That away I quickly learned that if you own the tool you will take better care of it. The big difference is had to remember were you at . For the most of us had to stop and get our location. There is nothing wrong in doing something right and proper.

    I’ve been watching this series since I was in high school, I believe this series was extremely influential in me becoming the mechanic I am now. I appreciate everything I have learned from you sir, and I want you to know that even though I don’t know you personally, I look up to the work you do, and you as a person, and hope that My work may someday be as through and precise as you have shown me and countless others through this tractor. Thank you for all the time you have put into this series.

    So grateful you brought us along on this journey. Its been a game changer for me. I've watched every episode and even created a written index for the series on the engine teardown and rebuild to use as an adjunct to the service manual (no white lab coats in the Toby manual!). Thanks for the inspiration. Looking forward to the future.

      I came in a little later, but found this channel because of the original video where they picked it up. I did find it before the engine breakdown started though, so I've been here almost as long. Now I'm just waiting for an update one someone else's D4 work when he has time to get back to it again ;).

  • @colin8532
    @colin8532 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    Now all I need is a D2 to rebuild, and a second job to pay for it! LOL. These videos are pure gold to anyone wanting to rebuild a D2, or any part of it. You and your videos are literally the #1 best resource on TH-cam for D2 related content. NO ONE has done what you've done here. Ask anyone, on any other caterpillar related channel or video, and they've all heard of you and your channel. As exciting as it is to have the base tractor finished, and ready for use, it's also kind of sad. It's been a great run watching you bring this old work horse back to life again. I'm excited to see what you get into next, and that cost breakdown I'm sure is going to be a real shocker! Thank you for an excellent series Toby. You should be proud of not only the finished product of the Swamp Angel, but also of the 220 episodes you produced along the way. Cheers

    What a great name and some heart warming stories. Brings a tear to the eye. Sr is 11 years older than me and I remember as a little kid playing in the forest all day. The only rule was to be home at 5:00 for a good hot dinner. All those places we played are all built up no and you couldn’t throw a rock with out hitting a house. Sad to see how the kids play today with video games and don’t know what they are missing. I used to hurt myself so often my parents said the next time it happened they were going to send me to the hospital in a cab alone lol. Great memories. It’s a different time now and not always for the better.

    Once, only once, did I tally up what I spent on a restoration project (59 IH 460U) and I'm fairly certain the shock from finally realizing that number took a solid ten years off my life.
    That aside, killer series bud, probably the most comprehensive restoration/rebuild guide put out there by anybody. Anyone working on an old Caterpillar now has the best reference anyone could ask for. I hope the weather clears up for you so you can roll out and enjoy all your hard work and effort.

    This was a fantastic video! Loved the flashbacks and story telling! Even though I have seen every episode, I had kind of forgotten what 5J1113 looked like in the beginning, what an amazing transformation! Thank you for bringing us along for the ride! Swamp Angel is a great name with great history behind it!
    Have you decided how you are going to incorporate the serial number tags from all the parts tractors? I have always thought that was a really cool idea since you brought it up in a previous video!

    Squatch & Sr.: A chapter in our lives closes. It's odd that I would mark off a chapter in my life by the end of a video series. But what a series! As everyone has said, top notch content, camera work, lighting and editing. We are all joined together by an appreciation of excellence, and excellence is what you gave us! I started watching pre-5113, X231 days. I have never been disappointed, and enjoyed every single episode. By the way, my entry into the Squatch cost of repair megamillions lottery is $35,000.

    I posted this on the member's only video and am posting it again here. Whether or not it was your intention, 5J1113 will be "your" tractor from now to the end of time. Doesn't matter how many people own it subsequent to you, you've left an indelible mark on 5J1113. Fifty years from now at a tractor show, someone could be showing her and some middle aged person, whom watched this tractor get rebuilt from the ground up as a child will go, "5J1113...that's Toby's old tractor." And woe be to the person who makes any changes that weren't an absolute necessity....especially if they decided to repaint her! 5J1113 is your legacy, good sir. Even though we all know you're not quite finished, you've done an outstanding job with this rebuild.

    Sounds like Senior is a 51 model. I am a 52 Model. My brother and I had some really good stories to tell. 50 model Ford sedan. Doors would not latch. My brother shoved it up in 2nd gear and slid around the corner at an intersection in front of the school bus and all our books in the floorboard went out my door ac4ross the road. Of course, we were trying to impress the girls on the bus, and they were all laughing at me while I picked up the books. LOL We also had a 55 Plymouth 4 door sedan, and the back doors were sectioned off and left us with a 6-foot wheelbase. Had a Torque Flite trans with a Hemi engine in it. My brother passed away in sept of 2021 of Covid and took part of me with him. My nephew loves hearing about our stories, and I love telling them to him. It has been a great series. I have watched every one of them as you made them. Look forward to more.

    Hard to believe it's to this point, I've watched every video and met the "legends" behind the camera! 😉🤣 Even though I'm a different color guy and we've gone back and forth on that, there is still the enjoyment of seeing the "restoration" process go through it's stages of progress some days, to going backwards on others,. At the end of the day no matter what color we collect, we share the same passion for bringing pieces of our history back to life, congratulations Swagger! I can't wait to see what the future holds!

    Yep, definitely a labor of love. You did a truly beautiful restoration on this old Cat, Squatch. It's been a real pleasure watching you work your way through this effort, from beginning to end. I grew up slinging wrenches on a lot of my dad's logging jobs - he had a bad addiction to old, old hardware and I busted more than a few knuckles at an early age learning how to replace and rebuild steering clutches, swap out busted finals and I probably put in a million strokes on that big old Cat grease pump, lubing the rollers and track frames on that old equipment. The first time Dad let me operate a piece of equipment it was the old D8 cable blade 2U he owned at the time. I was probably all of 11 years old and it was all I could do to break the frictions over center and stretch to reach the brakes on that machine. I loved every minute of the time I spent on and around that old banged up yellow hardware. Sweet memories of growing up around Cat yellow paint and that legendary moment after following a Cat repair manual on how pull things apart, only to find the words 'To re-assemble the ______, reverse the prior procedure". lol - thanks for sharing this with us, Squatch. In the old day's you'd be the guy Dad would refer to as 'the Cat Doctor', a term and title of immeasurable weight and respect. Nice job in restoring that D2 to it's prime !
