I have passed my test on Thursday for the first time. I don’t usually make comments but I feel that I have to, to show my appreciation. All this videos helped me a lot. I have overcome my driving anxiety because of Richard. I used to be really scared when I started my lesson to the point that I wanted to stop. Every time I made a mistake on my driving lesson, I just keep watching this videos as it fills my knowledge gap. Thank you very much Richard. I’m very grateful.

Those videos are very helpful as a rehearsal even after you get your own car. Dear learners - I am in my thirties and bought my first car few months ago. I haven't been driving since my license exam.
No matter how much you learn, ride as passenger and observe - you got to learn everything by yourself again. My friends got their cars just after they've grabbed their license and I feel like I failed at school for 10 or more years. It's especially stressful when it's your parents car and you have to park among other cars.
I remember that even on my exam it was forbidden to use mirrors when making reverse 90 degree turn. This reminds me learning mathematical formulas by heart when they were designed to be there in the book so you don't need to memorize them.
Anyway I see under youtube videos comments such "If you can't overtake the tractor or other car you should have your license taken away!" which is madness, because I didn't learn to overtake in my driving school not even once! Other drivers quickly forget they did not know how to drive and they're also very cocky - often too much and they kill or got killed because they are too confident.
The helpful solution in parking and also changing lanes are blind spot glue-on mirrors that you can buy for small amount of cash. I love them. They give that bit of confidence. Big mirror magnifies so you can see further if there's no one rushing with high speed, then quick check with blind spot mirror and you can be sure there's no one around.
And as with everything - it takes time and patience. Time and patience. It should be written down everywhere. All in all it's you - the driver - responsible with what you do with your car, not the guy who's honking and shouting around. You need to learn the roads, nuances, that this lane is ending, on this street are potholes, so go slower.
The stress will go away eventually but you need to travel many miles before it will happen. And like in airplanes - every landing in one piece is good landing. If after parking your car you're alive, car is in one piece, and no one is killed - nothing else matters really.
    Happy driving. Cheers!

By the general tone of this comment, I feel I need to let you know that yes, practice and being accurate and careful about everything is important when learning, but you need to let it get you to a point where you do it naturally, i.e. you still do proper checks etc, but let go of that "careful careful careful" anxiety attitude. You are right that overconfident drivers are dangerous, but so are underconfident and nervous drivers. I would rather get in a car as a passenger with an overconfident driver, than an underconfident one.. because the confidence is what will get you out of a bad situation rather than panicking and be completely void of important _action._

This is a brilliant video and i can prove the importance of the side mirrors being lowered when reversing. This is because on my driving lesson last Saturday my instructor got me to do all of the manoeuvres. I had really struggled with this previously and i suddenly realised that this was because i needed to lower my mirrors. Previously, my instructor had been asking me if i could see the bay line out of my left side mirror and i couldn't so i kept getting it wrong. On Saturday after i lowered the mirrors i completed all of my manoevers successfully, therefore showing the importance of lowering the side mirrors. I was one happy chappy!!!

If you watch other people drive you will notice them raising their body and head up so they can see more in the mirror too when doing these manourvers. Some cars mostly only expensive germans ones automatically lower the offside wing mirror when you put it in reverse.

Hi Richard! Thought I would let you know that I passed my test yesterday - long time coming after having three previous tests that resulted in fails (last one I did was during covid restrictions 2020) - very frustrating as I know I could drive but overthinking got the better of me so this is a massive weight lifted off. I used my own car for my test and practice of course with my parents supervising, these videos were amazing to look on, pretty sure that meeting traffic one and other tips allowed me to pass so thank you ! I’ll come back here whenever I need a refresh as you’re a great teacher! Anyone whose feeling like they can’t do it, I get it - try and remove those doubts through breath work/meditation/sleep tapes whatever works (that worked for me) and your confidence will shoot up! Had no anxiety driving on my own yesterday or today:) thanks again Richard:)

I also have been driving in my own car with the supervision of my parents but this has made me feel like my knowledge has gaps and my mannerisms aren’t to test standard because my parents aren’t instructors but i can’t afford many proper lessons. It feels like I will never pass. My test is in 9 days and my instructor doesn’t think I’m ready but I know I can drive well when I’m not nervous so hopefully 2nd time lucky. I had loads of problems parking with my car. So I bought the little circular mirrors you can stick onto your wing mirrors. I use them to see the ground beside my car and that helps loads when pulling up to the side of the road, reversing along the curb and even parking in car parks. I recommend anyone to get them as they are inexpensive and are useful to have if you don't have reversing camera or mirrors that fold down when you reverse. Saves you having to manually adjust your mirrors for any maneuvers.

Take it from a retired over-the-road driver, the more you do it the easier it will become. I was medically retired in 2018 and I still look in the mirrors when turning. Drove my first truck, or anything, on active duty in 1975 and have driven a truck of some sort in 3 different countries.
Keep practicing your backing and don't forget to also work on your parallel parking.

Fun trick my instructor in Denmark told me when parallel parking was to turn the wheel 1 full revolution, then reverse back until you were at 45*, then just straighten out the wheel and reverse back to park.
That really gets through the hard part of it, it gives you a comfortable distance to the object in front and you have a clear view and guide using the kerb.
Parallel parking ended up being one of the easiest maneuvers.

Not sure how I ended up here as I passed my test a decade ago haha, but I must say it is nice to hear an instructor talk about this technique as I have never heard it mentioned before and it was not the way I was taught. I found the way I was taught very difficult to understand, and as soon as I started driving after my test I figured out how to do it this way on my own. Part of me felt like I was doing it wrong since I have never seen it be instructed this way, so it is reassuring to know it is a valid way of driving! Thanks

Excellent video and you don't know how much I appreciate hearing a driving instructor push the use of mirrors. I learned to drive on a pickup (Canadian) and the mirrors had to be used as the canopy blocked any view out the back window.
One suggestion I have. You can buy vehicles with multi mirror settings for different drivers but one I would like to see is once you put it into reverse the mirrors automatically adjust downwards to where you want them for backing. You can do this with the multi-driver settings as long as not needed for other drivers.
Just found your videos and you are an excellent instructor and know how to elucidate in a way that is easily understood.

I wasn't nervous but focused on applying what I've learned from the instructor in my country and your THOROUGH TH-cam videos Richard. 🙌🙌

This video was so enlightening and way more helpful than any other examples of reversing have ever been. This was really informative! Seeing the rearview mirrors in real-time, and understanding directions as this way/that way (instead of left or right), really makes this process a whole lot clearer. Thank you so much! I'm taking the driving test in the US, but regardless, this was still helpful, and even moreso helpful than videos I've seen made for driving in the US (lol).

Thanks Belinda, I hope it helps. The key to parallel parking is no more than 45 degrees angle and come back with the wheels straight at that angle to insert yourself into the space. Too much angle and you'll probably get stuck.

I find that is' best to know where your rear wheels are, as they are the pivot point. Reversing into a bay, or parallel parking. It's not difficult to know, you get a feel for it pretty quick, or you can look at the back of the car, and it should be just behind the rear seats. That's what I've been taught, and it works a treat, even parallel parking.
    When parallel parking :
    - Get parallel car you are trying to park behind, say, and close, say a foot or two.
    - reverse straight until your rear wheels are past the other car's bumper, say by two feet, a yard to be generous (depends on the distance between your front wheel and the front of your car, but leave room).
    - Turn steering wheel and reverse so your car is at 30-45 degrees towards the curb.
    - Reverse straight, until your rear wheel is close to the curb (say a foot to again be generous).
    - Rotate wheel in the other direction, to straighten the car into the bay, and keep reversing.
    - If you left enough room up front (two feet, a yard), you should just slide into the space, a foot off the curb (whatever you decided to choose).

I discovered this trick of lowering the mirrors on my own as I learned my driving in 1963 before door mirrors were invented. A few years ago I helped a lady friend get into a tight spot in a hotel car park using this same method. Cars are much easier to drive today than they were back then.

The only time you will ever turn the wheel to the opposite direction where you wanna reverse is when you are in a vehicle that has a trailer! and it is jolly difficult to do so lmao. (ETS2 with trucks.)
But honestly, this is The BEST video in regards to this maneuvers. Cause it is actually showing you what you need to see in the mirrors! Thanks CD!

    • @T.K.9
      @T.K.9 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

for instance, at 10:05 you can see both mirrors, and you can just sit in the middle and can visualise you are in the car. Where you wanna go, you can see in the mirror in the video. And you turn to where you want to reverse. And that really helps a lot to learners.

Hi C D, I gat a sudden burst of joy every time I find one of your videos!, this one starts with giving me cause for a wry grin, when you speak of reversing backwards it sounds as if you could try to reverse forwards in which case the mirrors would not help!.
On a more sensible theme I have two vehicles which have quite different mirrors, each one I can usually manage the parallel reverse parking without much trouble but if I then switch to the other one the way the optics of the mirrors differs gives me all sorts of trouble. Part of the problem is that the car's mirrors when set for normal driving do not show so much of the near-field ground because they are narrower. There is also some slight difference in the magnification giving a distorted depth perception.
The odd thing about this is that this only happens if I swap from the van to the car or car to the van to begin with, by the time I have returned from any significant journey my brain has made the required adjustments!.
There is another element in the equation and that relates to spatial awareness, every vehicle that I drive I have to learn where its margins are, I have often said that the only way I know for sure is to actually rub up against fixed obstacles so =that I get the feeling, in just the same way that your fingertip 'knows' where your nose is!.
The van that I use does not have any rear view mirrors at all because it has no rear door widows, the only way I can 'know' what is behind me is if I have just driven over it!, this is why I always reverse park and never try to reverse out into any possible path, when trying the three point turn I have to select a suitable junction, pull over, stop, reverse as quickly as possible, by which I mean initiate the the turn rapidly, no dithering, so that the is no opportunity for anyone to enter the space I need before I get there, exactly the same applies when parking in any blocked driveway, always be ready for a clear exit.
    Cheers, Richard.

This is why alot of cars like mine now have a parking function where you can preset the nearside mirror to a desired position when going into reverse. Though people need to understand the differences when doing a maneuver like this in a longer car as the rear protrudes more. Also parking in an empty car park is one thing which we all learn in but people seem to panic when parking between 2 cars as is daily life

I am glad you added the bit on the end as up until then i thought you had forgotten to say that you need to keep track of what the front of the car is doing. It annoys me that people back in to 90 degree car parks (yes it is compulsory in some places) as I think it holds up traffic more than backing out does.
The other thing I find interesting is that when i learned to drive (1972) the car I learned in didn't have any external mirrors which was not uncommon in those days. When I got my licence we had a drivers side one put on (for towing) but never bothered with a passenger side one.
