    Oh my, I love the "he's in FCA's pocket" conspiracy theories. So much fun! Here's the deal: The Durango is like Denny's. Nobody plans to go to Denny's for dinner, you just end up there because all the other options are closed. If a [insert 3-row CUV here] offered 8,700 lbs of towing it would be on the list. If for instance the Aviator could do it, I'd buy an Aviator instead. If the Pathfinder could do it, I rather like it and would buy it instead also. Ditto a Telluride, maybe a Palisade, Highlander in a pinch. Just sayin...

      Take their opinions with a grain of salt, Alex. It’s the internet and there will always be complaints. There’s not another logical option that exists other than the Durango that fits your needs. Sounds like they’re all AoA noobs.

    Thanks for this when I was buying my first car my entire family was like just get a RAV4! Why? because they had bad experiences with other brands and to them, a Toyota fits their needs... but they never felt right to me. So I looked at PHEVs, HEVs, BEVs, crossovers, and sedans but none of them felt right... So I went with my first choice... a Mustang.
    Why? It has 4 seats that yes we fit in, It has a big trunk, it's the Ecoboost so it's nimble and efficient, It has heated and cooled seats and finally it's a Mustang.
    Something I've always wanted for all it is sure it has half the features of the Camaro but I can see better out of it, I got mine for $9k off... overall, it was the right fit for me... Oh and everyone likes it now.

    Roads in the mountainous forests are very particular. Also the need to drive into crowded cities of California makes the choice of Alex correct. The flat stretches of regions in most of North America with large roads and enough property area will definitely tend to prefer a truck vs a SUV. The original family of Alex in Texas will always suggest to choose a truck.

    There are reasons that I throw a few bucks each month to "Alex on Autos" to express my appreciation of this channel. Alex' needs and priorities are quite different from mine but I always know the basis of his assessments. And more importantly he knows and points out the unique character of his needs. I tow nothing more challenging than a wheeled trash container every week down and back my long steep driveway. I'm no more likely to purchase a Dodge Durango or a Ram 1500 than a Porsche 911 or a Corvette but it's always interesting to see a review that is so detailed and comprehensive. (Who else discusses axle ratios in their reviews?) Thanks, Alex. Always worth my time to see your reviews even when a particular vehicle isn't on my cross shopping list.

    I just went through a very similar process. Ended up trading in one of my favorite vehicles ever, a 2018 Durango R/T AWD. We were using it to pull a 31' travel trailer and while the Durango felt strong, it wasn't confidence inspiring when pulling through a crosswind.
    We ended up with a 2020 Ram 1500 Laramie with the 3.0 Ecodiesel which pulls the trailer with ease and gets much better mileage to boot. I miss the Durango - I'll have another one but next time it will be an SRT or Hellcat.

Dodge(according to some forums) has had a problem with advertising correct payload for several years. A 7000lb trailer plus 4 men, and full gas would probably put you over 1200lbs. That is without cargo.

    392 Durango it is then. Glad we had this talk. The other 3-row crossovers mentioned at the end, the Atlas, the Explorer, the highlander are all atrocious vehicles to drive compared to the Durangos. Durango is heavier, yet feels much lighter on it’s feet. My two cents.

    Great comparison, Alex. I feel that the Durango is an underrated SUV. However, its dated looks and poor fuel economy result in its remaining a niche vehicle. I would consider one if I had heavy towing requirements and didn’t want a pickup. One thing you omitted was the length of each vehicle’s wheel base. I presume that the pickup has a longer wheel base, which I understand is an advantage for towing.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wheelbase has an impact yes, but its not the only factor involved and all things together the Durango is more stable due to its higher curb weight , lower center of gravity and suspension design

To this point, I have had no reason to be concerned with tow ratings and have had a need to seat six so I obviously have an XC90. My need to carry six is decreasing and looking to the future, my need to tow is increasing so I’m keeping my eyes open for something that would fit the bill. After listening to your comparison of the two, it seems to be a no brainer. The Durango meets your needs and preferences better than the RAM 1500.
    In most cases, the SUV usually meets the needs of people better than a pickup unless you are a rancher or need to carry long items all the time. I had long ago purchased a 2001 Ford F-150 SuperCrew and thought it would be perfect for my needs; but it just wasn't. It was a great vehicle, but it just didn't do things the way I wanted.

      I suspect not, because they’re larger, and thus potentially the same issues as the big truck but without as many benefits (e.g. the bed). What do I need? Something I can afford. The least expensive Durango with available V8 is a 2 wheel drive R/T model which starts at $45,595 msrp. A well equipped 2 wheel drive Ram 1500 V8 Big Horn with quad cab and 6 1/2’ bed starts at $38,280 msrp. That’s a big difference, one which most Americans can appreciate these days. Plus there are a lot more Rams out there to choose from than V8 Durangos. By the way, the overall length of a Ram crew cab with 5 1/2’ short bed is actually 4” longer than the quad cab with the more practical 6 1/2’ long bed. Great comparison Alex, thanks as always!

      Yes... but... it's just as big as the RAM and the interior isn't as nice.

    Oddly I traded my 2019 RAM 1500 (w Offroad package) for a 2021 Honda Ridgeline ... mainly because the RAM at 19'4" was getting tiresome to park and drive ... and the fuel mileage even with 3.21 gears was pretty atrocious ...and didn't seem all the sprightly with 395 ponies under the hood ...

    Hi Alex, long time subscriber here. Question, is it possible or smart to buy an older Durango with high mileage and make it new. Like a rebuild engine and things like that?
    I quest I’m asking is it possible to make an older car just as good as a newer one cheaper.

    The Ram's payload capacity is ridiculously low. I tow and my Silverado 1500 LTZ's payload capacity is 1910 lbs. And mine has plenty of options, including a moonroof. Between me, the wife, the dog, two generators, extra gas, a loaded cooler, firewood, etc, we're putting some serious weight in the bed. And then there's the tongue weight of the trailer. Even if the Ram had 1500 lbs of payload capacity, we'd be over it.

    1500 with air ride and at least in a Laramie trim with 12 inch screen. Had one for two years and it rides way better than the Durango I looked at. Interior is where you spend most of your time and it’s way better in the Ram.

    Interesting that the Chevy has the tow rating for the specific vehicle on the door placard, but not on the website for a build config - and then you say Ram has it on the website (but not on the vehicle) but not for the Durango. Weird. The Ram is the most elegantly styled PU, but I love the tough look of the Silverado, especially in Trail Boss guise. GM is gonna get wise and let me spec the baby Duramax with the Trail Boss (and updated interior), then they can have my money.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Its on the vehicle too, but it makes shopping much easier when you can see it on the website. You can enter all the ones you're online shopping and only visit the ones you want.

    The 5.7 hemi in the 8,000lb Ram 2500, before it was discontinued, was rated for about 13,000lbs with roughly the same gearing as the Durango R/T Tow n' Go package, so the 8,700lb tow limit is all suspension based. Also the payload for the Tow n Go is the highest of all the V8 Durango's, pushing 1,600lbs. But honestly if you weren't in desperate need of the 8700lb towing capacity, the new Grand Cherokee L Overland with the trail package would probably have been your best friend here, giving you an interior better than the ram with otherwise very close specs to the durango.
    For the Ram, well the Ramboxes eat payload alive, also the tow rating drastically goes up with 3.92 rear gears, where this truck you have had the 3.21 rear gears. For the Ram 1500, the 3.55 is exclusive to the 3.6 V6.
    Honestly as someone who's been looking into pickups and currently drives a grand cherokee, I am taking a hard look at the tahoe with the diesel because the fuel economy, towing capability and space is really only rivaled by a pickup, but the tahoe's ride is infinitely better and I don't tow that much.
