"All you ungrateful humans who took everything away from me will feel my loss and despair!" That line still haunts me. I never forgot the way it was delivered and the emotion behind it.
Hey, Gerald! Your son (Eggman's dad) and/or grandson (Eggman himself) are still on the planet you want to destroy! Something tells me you don't care about them and have been playing favorites with Maria!
It would make sense. After all, in Eggman's eyes, his grandfather was a scientific hero, wrongfully imprisoned and murdered by sightless fools who feared progress, leading him to become a ruthless industrialist who cares little for those who suffer in the name of technological advancement.
Man, I love the story of this game so much. Gerald managed to be a truly terrifying villain, even from beyond the grave. I love the darker tone of these older Sonic games.

I love Sonic Adventure 2 for introducing him and then Shadows the Hedgehogs game expanded on him and made him an even more layered and interesting character, love it.
Me too Jason. I honestly cannot wait to see how Sonic Movie 3 pulls this off since we're very likely yet to see live actors for Maria & Gerald Robotnik.

I don't like a lot of the cutscenes or voice acting in this game. But Gerald's speech and delivery along with the music got very real, very quick and it was downright scary.

from what we've just learnt from shadow generations this action from Gerald is even more insane as we found out Maria has a sister who would still be alive in her 60s
This cutscene and remembering of the level “lost colony” really shows how dark this game is if you think just below the surface and what it all really means, I don’t know if there is a canon death count but how many of the people died during the raid while taking into consideration how big the ARK really is
Little kid me was scared shitless the first time I saw this scene after 'beating the game' twice. It's the biggest tone shift with Gerald, seriously, for a game that looks like SA2, Gerald is looking shockingly good even 20 years later...!
When I heard the beginning of this song in the last story events while professor Gerald was speaking, it felt like the most eerie moment I ever saw in my life. Not only by the fact it was something you would feel by uncovering something from the past, but also because it gives you that feel or reminds you of dreams you may have of video games and the dark secrets these may hide within themselves, but this secrets are a whole obscure realm of their own, as if you would play metroid or zelda or Luigi's Mansion and you'd uncover a secret area hidden from players for a long time, and that's what I treasure the most of sa2b. Even if lines, voice acting or everything is somewhat goofy, it goes far beyond its meaning, and it's a memory and a feeling I'll treasure forever.
I played this game a lot a decade and a half ago and I still remember this scene and the haunting nature of it. It definitely disturbed me as a kid, how someone could become so resentful that he wanted to destroy the whole world. There’s a saying that the most dangerous person is the one with nothing to lose. Gerald says how after Maria’s death he had nothing left to live for. It reminds me a bit of Joker where he had a similar mental breakdown and wanted to cause chaos to destroy the world that made him suffer. This sort of thing always leaves an impression on people because of how dangerous someone who loses everything could be.

You see can see clear as day the difference between how Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow The Hedgehog handles darker and serious tones. Shadow's game constantly shoves in your face with how "mature and serious" it is by adding in guns, swearing, and some of endings where Shadow kills Eggman. It just comes off as extremely juvenile and something a 12 year old would come up with. SA2, however, builds up it's more serious moments. The drama and tension comes off as more natural since the game isn't in your face about it.
It's no different actually, only whiny kids think Shadow the Hedgehog is "too dark and edgy". Guns don't automatically mean edgy, aliens are invading the planet and causing destruction everywhere they go, what did you expect everyone to fight them with? Candy canes?! And Shadow killing Eggman is a result of the multiple ending mechanic which was done really well. Shadow the Hedgehog does build up it's serious moments, if you play on the right path, if you go on a random route to get the next ending, of course nothing is going to make sense, it's not supposed to. You're meant to pay attention and play the game numerous times to get the full story, I understood basically everything about Shadow the Hedgehog, and I'd argue that Gerald's speech in that game is just as good as the one here.
@@dartheverstar9564 Okay... 1: Why the hell did you make such a big comment in response to mine? Seriously, half of what's in yours had nothing to do with what I said. 2: Literally everything you said is your opinion. 3: You said you wanted to know whether or not Shadow was an android and that when you finished the game that question wasn't answered... except it is, during the final boss, Eggman tells Shadow that he is the real thing and not an android, he even explains that after SA2, he saved Shadow with one of his robots and that all he had was amnesia. 4: You said you stopped playing the games after Shadow the Hedgehog, but then you criticised Unleashed for having the Werehog even though you've never actually played the game, I have and the Werehog is tons of fun, but the point is that you hated on something without knowing anything about it, you're making it very difficult for me take you seriously. 5: Not playing Sonic games after Shadow the Hedgehog is really stupid, why do that? Shadow the Hedgehog doesn't define the entire series. 6: If you honestly stopped playing after Shadow I feel bad for you because it means you missed out on great games like Sonic Rush, Sonic Rush Adventure, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic and the Black Knight, Sonic Generations and DEFINITELY Sonic Mania! 7: Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 did not "nail it" on the story, there's plenty of errors in both and both leave you with a few questions (in Sonic Adventure 2's case, questions that were actually answered in Shadow the Hedgehog). When I read this in your comment I just came to the conclusion that you were one of THOSE Sonic fans, who think the Adventure games were God's gift to man and no other Sonic game even comes close, well, that's your opinion, and you can have that opinion, but in my opinion, there's plenty of Sonic games I'd rather play. 8: I didn't mention how I feel about Shadow's game because it wasn't the point, my original comment was simply explaining that the game is not as "dark and edgy" as people think, and that I believe Gerald's speech in that game was just as good as the one in SA2. But if you want my opinion, I like the game a lot, the guns didn't bother me as much as they bothered everyone because they suited Shadow and half the fanbase were asking SEGA to give Sonic a gun anyway, the swearing was also fine, "damn" and "hell" aren't the worst words in the world and it didn't seem forced to me, yes, there were moments that were too dark (the song "I am dead" immediately comes to mind), but everything else made up for it. I liked the multiple stories and the Last Story, and if you pay enough attention you'll learn that Gerald's story is probably one of the most depressing and well written of any Sonic character. So yeah, I liked the game, the gameplay was fun, it was fun playing a Sonic game where the goal wasn't just "make it to the end of the level as fast as you can", the story is good if you listen and since it's a Sonic game, the music is amazing, call me crazy but I think I like I Am All of Me more than Live and Learn. 9: A reboot is the last thing Sonic needs, look at Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric, if you think Shadow's backstory needs to be changed, play that game and we'll see what you think then. 10: I didn't call the people who think the game is bad whiny kids, I called the people who think it's too dark and edgy whiny kids, because if they honestly think Shadow the Hedgehog is too dark, they're just pathetic, let's see those people play something like Doom or Danganronpa. 11: Finally, what's your point? Are you trying to outright convince me the game is bad? And that SA2 is the best game in the series? Sorry, but you're not gonna do either, I think Shadow the Hedgehog is a great game and my favourite Sonic game is Sonic Unleashed.
To Nathan Evans, I have also played Sonic Unleashed, The Wii Version, but I still played it. To me it was and still is a unique game in the Sonic Game canon. Day for speed and Night for combat was something I enjoyed about the game.
When you realize Gerald’s diary may have also initiated the plot of sonic adventure 1 too. 🤯He did know about chaos trapped in the master emerald enough to make artificial chaos
Now that Shadow is confirmed to be in the third Sonic movie, I truly hope his backstory gets the treatment it deserves. No ridiculous Black Doom/Black Arms story, just tell the story like it was in Adventure 2 but do it even better: Put a big emphasis on Shadow's relationship with Marie and Gerald Robotnik, and ffs include Gerald's last will like it is here (though maybe tone it down somewhat for the child audience) and emphasize the internal conflict Shadow has between avenging Gerald and Marie in the name of Gerald's wishes and instead honoring Maria's wish to protect humanity instead of destroying it.
Amy should also be in the third movie too since she plays a huge role in Shadow's turn. But yeah, I agree with most of everything you said here. The only exception being Gerald's last will. I think the films should grow with its audience. While they could tone it down a bit for the sake of the younger audience, I still think they need to keep the tragic aspect intact as it would help Sonic grow as a character, and understand how even being a hero will have its bad days .
@@proto245 Agreed! Paramount CANNOT afford to make the same mistake that was made with Sonic X. The whole fanbase will be more furious than half of it already is over Frontiers!
What the fuck is so bad about Black Doom and the Black Arms being involved with Shadows creation? They add extra layers to Shadow's creation, expanded his backstory and actually helped things make more sense. They deserve some spotlight.
I've always been confused by this. If Gerald was imprisoned and killed as soon as that recording stopped, how did he program it so the video would play on the ARK as soon as the eclipse canon was activated? Also were GUN the ones who recorded all that? wouldn't they have been confused by the 'In 27 minutes your planet will be destroyed' part? lol
My guess is that Gerald somehow programmed the ARK to play the footage of his own execution when all 7 Chaos Emeralds were collected and place into the Eclipse Cannon, of course it still doesn't make sense as there's no way Gerald was able to program the ARK to play his OWN execution. Maybe he had Shadow program that footage? We know that Gerald must have left some sort of instructions for Shadow otherwise he wouldn't have known about the Eclipse Cannon or how it works, and he doesn't mention his revenge plan in the recording we see in Shadow the Hedgehog because Maria was still alive and he hadn't gone crazy yet. My understanding of the whole situation is this: Gerald makes the recording we see in Shadow the Hedgehog to inform Shadow how to stop the Black Arms when they return 50 years later, some time after he makes that recording the Government lose interest in Project Shadow (this might be due to learning of Gerald's dealings with aliens, either that or they just began to fear Shadow himself) and cut all funding to the project, Gerald continues with it anyway and the Government decide to get rid of any trace of project Shadow, which meant killing everyone on the ARK and capturing Gerald. This is obviously when Maria dies and sends Shadow to Earth, unfortunately he's captured by the Government anyway and locked away for about 50 years, after which they claim the ARK was shut down under the premise that their had been an accident to further cover up what happened. Now it's not clear whether Gerald evaded capture or was captured and managed to escape, but at some point he learns of Maria's death and goes crazy, he then somehow returns to the ARK to reprogramming the Eclipse Cannon to plummet to the Earth and destroy it when all 7 Chaos Emeralds are collected. This next part is just a guess, but since Gerald wanted Shadow to gather the Emeralds, he probably left a set of instructions detailing the functions of the Eclipse Cannon and how to make it crash into the Earth, in these instructions, he told Shadow to play his execution tape when the Emeralds are gathered, he probably knew he wouldn't live to power the Eclipse Cannon himself, he probably knew that he'd be captured and executed. A lot of "probably"s there, but the games never actually explain it themselves so I had to think of something that makes sense. It's also implied that the reason Gerald set this task to Shadow is because he wanted Shadow to stop his own crazy plan, basically the last bit of Gerald's sanity tried to stop himself from committing genocide... which is really sad when you think about it. Anyway you probably know the rest, sorry that was pretty long but I hope it helps. Edit: Oh, and GUN probably recored his execution as a sort of "last words" thing or something, I don't know.
@@nathanevans1382 that would make more sense if SHADOW was the one to have taken that execution footage and uploaded to the ark and do a worldwide broadcast. You even hear it during the biolizards release.
We all talk about how dark this is, but what I think is ever crazier is the way Gerald delivers his final message. He talks in a way in which he separates himself completely from humanity as if he isn’t a human himself. “This is a death sentence to every human being on earth.” “All of you will be destroyed, along with your beloved planet” “All of you ungrateful humans”. He talks like a man possessed. The darkness that grew within Gerald upon Maria’s death and the turn to insanity truly makes Gerald Robotnik one of the darkest, most tragic, scary and interesting villains in video game history IMO. Not to mention the eldritch horror elements with the Biolizard. Perhaps his exposure to the Black Arms planted a seed of darkness in him and all that was needed for it to sprout was a little push into insanity, that being Maria’s murder. That could have also given him his above-humanity complex, even though he is a human himself.
Possibly the darkest scene in the franchise. It was implied that he was executed after that message. The cell that Sonic was in on Prison Island was likely where the execution took place too.
I know he seems to either be alive (doubt it) or brought back to life temporarily (likely), but the Sonic 3 movie will be insane if they use Gerald's execution speech verbatim. It's really dark but also pretty great writing for the silly goofy cartoon animal series
If the third Sonic movie's really gonna do Shadow, there's a lot they potentially may have to include: Maria The Space Colony ARK Gerald Robotnik Rouge Gerald getting executed or him already being dead right off the bat G.U.N. Sonic and Shadow clashing etc
AND Amy! I'm pretty sure no one wants her role as Shadow's reformer to be taken by another person AGAIN, right? The fanbase would be outraged over opening that wound; they'd never forgive Paramount!
Idk why but that image of Gerald Robotnik on the chair chained up, the text on the wall, and the lights moving around with his head down along with the lighting disturbs me
There's something mildly amusing about the fact the voice acting in this game is largely pretty awful, but then Gerald's voicework is...actually pretty solid.
starting at 4:55 Eggman: The core of the Eclipse Cannon is now highly reactive and explosive. This is because of the energy of the Chaos Emeralds is overpowering it. If the colony collides with earth, it will shatter into pieces like my grandfather predicted! [affectionately] That mad scientist! Amy: That should be you, right? Tails: We have to stop the Space Colony, now! Eggman: The Space Colony ARK's position may have shifted due to the amount of energy given off by the Emeralds. We have to stop the energy! Tails: But... how? Rouge: Hmm, that's it. There is a way to stop the energy! [to Knuckles] We have to use your Emerald! You're the one who told me that the Master Emerald has the power to stop the Chaos Emeralds! Knuckles: That's right. [pulls out the Master Emerald] If I use this, I just might be able to stop the Chaos Emeralds!
Shadow The Hedgehog (the game) rewrote a lot of the events that happened from before. It also went over the top with multiple versions of the same story. They also kind of rewrote the story when they brought Shadow back in Heroes so... Sonic Team seems to come up with the game first, then worry about the story later. It explains why Black Doom never made an appearance prior to Shadow The Hedgehog. Sonic Adventure 2 is simply a direct sequel to Sonic Adventure 1.
i honestly want a remake that rewrites the backstory surrounding gerald a bit to make more sence and fit the canon after this game also, heroes and shadow the hedgehog should be rewritten to have the current day shadow actually be a shadow android instead of the original. it cheapened the emotional message of adventure2

from what we've just learnt from shadow generations this action from Gerald is even more insane as we found out Maria has a sister who would still be alive in her 60s
This cutscene and remembering of the level “lost colony” really shows how dark this game is if you think just below the surface and what it all really means, I don’t know if there is a canon death count but how many of the people died during the raid while taking into consideration how big the ARK really is
The thing is, we don't know how big the ARK is, because we've never gotten a scale on how huge it is
Little kid me was scared shitless the first time I saw this scene after 'beating the game' twice.

Gerald NEVER CARED about controlling himself! He kept crossing lines, making deals with devils, meddling in affairs he shouldn't have. I get that he wanted to save Maria, but he shouldn't have taken such unethical measures to do so!
GUN shut the project down because they were afraid that Gerald was playing with fire, and he WAS! To be fair, so was GUN until then.

While they could tone it down a bit for the sake of the younger audience,
I still think they need to keep the tragic aspect intact as it would help Sonic grow as a character, and understand how even being a hero will have its bad days .

I've always been confused by this. If Gerald was imprisoned and killed as soon as that recording stopped, how did he program it so the video would play on the ARK as soon as the eclipse canon was activated?
Also were GUN the ones who recorded all that? wouldn't they have been confused by the 'In 27 minutes your planet will be destroyed' part? lol
Probably just thought he was nuts lol

“This is a death sentence to every human being on earth.”
“All of you will be destroyed, along with your beloved planet”
“All of you ungrateful humans”.
This has to be the Darkest Part in the entire game

no it made it more creepy
The music whilst the diary is being read makes the entire thing creepy regardless of what’s being said
Girls:do you have real emotion you did not cry at titanic
Boys:
This is on par with House of The Dead's backstory.
That fucking moment when you can barely hear the voices over the music. Lmao.
SEGA Fan Boy here I love sonic Alot but this is one of the darkest sonic games I ever played.
1:22 Ross and Rachel from Friends
Remember this will be in sonic 3 movie
I hope so
“Pop-pop…?”
“In the saggy flesh”
Rouge....I CAN NOT HEAR YOU!
There's something mildly amusing about the fact the voice acting in this game is largely pretty awful, but then Gerald's voicework is...actually pretty solid.
Like if this is the scariest thing in sonic history
Obviously, you never heard of Sonic Schoolhouse
starting at 4:55 Eggman: The core of the Eclipse Cannon is now highly reactive and explosive.
Gerald speech video is like Heath Ledgers joker video from the dark knight
Wasn't space colony ark supposed to be for the black doom thing
Shadow The Hedgehog (the game) rewrote a lot of the events that happened from before. It also went over the top with multiple versions of the same story. They also kind of rewrote the story when they brought Shadow back in Heroes so... Sonic Team seems to come up with the game first, then worry about the story later. It explains why Black Doom never made an appearance prior to Shadow The Hedgehog. Sonic Adventure 2 is simply a direct sequel to Sonic Adventure 1.
This was before Black Doom. Heroes and Shadow The Hedgehog fuck up the canon of the series with stuff like that.
@@adamdenardis5438 thx I was wondering that
i honestly want a remake that rewrites the backstory surrounding gerald a bit to make more sence and fit the canon after this game
also, heroes and shadow the hedgehog should be rewritten to have the current day shadow actually be a shadow android instead of the original. it cheapened the emotional message of adventure2
Wait so Gerald is eggmans grandfather and Maria is Gerald's granddaughter, so what are eggman and maria
UnstableCubone Eggman and Maria are cousins
@@keonh.2679 Ivo and Maria. They are both Robotniks.
More precisely, Overlanders. They have keen genius intellect.
