I like the touch of Sonic landing on the island itself instead of going down that snowboarding segment. Makes more sense to visibly escape into the jungle than still be in the middle of the military zone
Usually when I see these remake videos from various channels, the end product has super high fidelity but doesn't match the aesthetic or general style of the original game at all. But I genuinely feel like this captures a lot of the essence of the original Metal Harbor and ups the fidelity without just looking like a throwaway test environment; I can't really explain why, but I could see an SA2 remake looking somewhat like this. It's not perfectly similar of course, which I assume is a very tall task and I have no idea what kinda work goes into that, but you did an amazing job!
It actually does honestly lol that’s how they gonna make it for ps5 we all know this if it ever happens this we’ll be similar for are sonic adventure remake or sonic adventure 3
@@agreedboarart3188 That's not entirely true either. The gameplay still holds up and it runs at a high frame rate, but the PC version of the original game is bad some ways, mainly due to it freezing often.
Lots of people praising this, and to an extent, I agree in regards to visual fidelity. However, the camera gives me an actual headache. There's a reason why the camera doesn't follow Sonic everywhere in SA2, and this example shows why, it's too janky. Everytime Sonic runs on a slight angle, the camera shifts that angle as well, it's very jarring. I'm sure with more work, you can get it better looking.
Hi, gameplay code is provided by the Infinity engine and isn't my work. The codebase I'm using has been ported through many engine versions and some of the features no longer work correctly in Unreal 5.4, one of these being spline based cameras and player movement. This results in me not being able to use the external cameras or automate loops and is out of my control. I will be using an updated version of the engine for future projects which will hopefully fix this. For now however, please take in the actual level contents and visuals rather than the gameplay camera which I had no hand in making.
@JeliLiam ahh, that's fair. I gathered as much when I saw you mention someone else in the engine's name. And like I said, the visuals are greatly, there's some minor lighting tweaks that could be made for sure, but still, a great job was done with this level!
@laterferaligatr2947 it's not, it's criticism. I like the visuals, and the movement. However, I can't enjoy either of those things when the camera decides to shift around at the smallest change of angles of the floor. It's the reason why I don't like lots of fan made engines, nobody ever implements an actual camera system other than, follow Sonic.
Thank you! I've always wondered how that ending sequence made any sense in the original, considering you go up for miles on a rocket and somehow end up going down some shaft right after jumping off? How tall was this building? Did they fire a rocket right next to it? So I decided to indeed replace it with a skydiving segment that lands you on Prison Island, where the story immediately picks up next :).
One thing I will say, I like the change of the end having Sonic land on the beach as opposed to the original's boarding through a vent, it explains how Sonic goes from escaping prison, runs through the harbor, and retreats deep into the jungle.
This is actually really cool. I especially like how you made the loop segments freely moveable instead of automating it. If I were to make one change though, I would consider having Sonic slide down a mountain in the forest area. I like the idea you have already, as it bridges into the next level. I think this change would make it even better. Just an idea though
THAT'S SO SIIIIIIICK!!! I always loved this one so much! I wasn't usually a huge fan of Sonic/Shadow stages, because I'm bad at video games, and I have myopia and mental stalling conditions that make it hard for me to keep up with the speed. But a few of them were spectacular, and this was certainly one of my fave Sonic courses. I liked the Tails/Eggman courses best out of the missions. But my favorite thing from these games was the Chao Gardens. I usually only got access to all of the missions on both sides for more chao stuff, and then I would selectively raise my chaos to where they'd have S-rank stats in everything, and then, I would level them up with chaos drives and fruit, and give them small animals. Then I'd go into the races and Chao Karate and watch my little nuggit or gremlin kick tail.
This is gorgeous bro. I got so excited from just the intro alone. I said to myself, "I know this cant be the music for this stage, right? I remember the tune and it didn't-" .. then that godlike transition happened.
Very nice. The homing tracker is on point, not delayed like some other Sonic games, so you can play at full speed with that QoL. The physics seem perfect too. Really nice work here. Camera has a janky spot or 2, but a great stage demo overall
When Sonic runs along the carrier and his absolutely goddamn static upper body feels nailed to the center of the screen, it is such a Modern Era moment. This along with that jump animation with spread sausage fingers.
Amazing work. Don’t understand why so many fans can make these but sega refuses to give us an adventure 3, that would be the best selling game in the series
Love how even all this time later we cant fix sonic trying to run down the scaffolding without him pinballing and stopping dead in his tracks if you even attempt to touch the control stick
This is actually freaking amazing! The only thing I wish these guys would do is keep the agility of SA2 sonic instead of having being slow at the start and have the boost function with the wind instead instead of a blue aurora around him. I’m not sure why no one has thought of just adding a speed difficulty where if you want him faster just pause the game and adjust based on your reflexes After that you would have the perfect sonic gane
I'm usually not a fan of these videos because the stage itself never changes, which I took is crucial when remaking it (like City Escape in Generations). However, this remake is great despite that because it shows how smooth and fast Sonic's running can look despite just being on a standard SA2 stage.
It's not bad, not at all, but personally, i think you should absolutely tone down most of the Motion Blur, and i mean MOST of it. That along with stretching out the level so Sonic can actually pass from jogging speed most of the time, you could also make it a little bit wider, but it's not that necessary. You can also try moving the camera farther away, similar to Frontier's Cyberspace camera so the level doesn't feel claustrophobic, along with automating the Loop-de-loops (Yes it's necessary) to minimize Yank. I'm not going to mention the Skydive section, because it's a pretty clever solution knowing this engine's limitations. It's a pretty good work by itself, but i think it has the potential to be something even better. Keep it up buddy, i know you can do this.
Aww, but the jank of having control during the loop de loops is part of the fun and charm. I think they got a nice balance between faithful and QoL upgrades with the more modern homing tracking that also works for the lightspeed dash. Widening the path and stuff like that would lower the skill ceiling, I feel like. It kinda lowers the floor too, but going slower is always an option for a lower floor and I don't think this game really needs it. It already has rails in numerous places to help beginners along. I'd prefer more grindable rails on the edges to wider paths. Though, a high speed section might be nice. Considering how fast this stage can get in the original, I don't think it's totally necessary.
Stuff like this and the ARK level we've seen for Shadow Generations proves to me that a remake of SA2 would be genuinely peak sonic. I think of every game that could be remade, this is the one that has the most potential. The story itself is ridiculous but also genuinely awesome, the world design is great, and i think with reworked mech gameplay and streamlined treasure hunting, along with a graphical upgrade and some better writing, an SA2 remake would absolutely rule. Peak sonic vibes for me
The background unreal engine graphics are great. They MUST bring back the refined SA2 physics and character models in order for it to be a total slam dunk!
Sadly missing the part of the level where Sonic shreads on a makeshift snowboard. Legit one of my favorite levels. That camera game me some mad whiplash though. Still always fun seeing this level. Takes me back.
I really love this. I really really do. I will say I can't get over how much more I love the Sonic running animations from SA2 OG but I get that times they are a changin. I just wish Sonic didn't currently run, just a little, like he's holding in a poo
i enjoy the hard work put into producing this. is this something you would do for more of the game? this level in particular has greatly benefited from the sea and lighting effects. a whole new immersive feeling comes from that!
Yes! I'm currently working on City Escape and compiling it together with this level into a downloadable demo! Check out my community tab for some previews!
@KirikkSiSq lots of games on the PS4/Switch look a lot nicer than this, stylization is more important than shoving as many unoptimized stock effects as you can onto your game.
So i know metal harbor is a staple and everyone is enamored by the graphics and style of this because its beautiful but why is nobody talking about how link is clearly voicing sonic in this lol i love it
I was actually surprised when I saw gameplay. I've seen so many "remake" videos then it's just showing the place and there's actually no game.
Also in such “remakes” they use the same textures like in the original game
I mean makes sense for a Sonic fangame. No need to worry about DMCA's and the fans make tons of fangames that go places.

The skydive onto a beach is a very nice adaptation, especially given the limitations. Clever.
Not just any beach, it's Prison Island!
Definitely makes more sense then the random metal tunnel in the OG
@mcknife25 you were going through a broken off part of the rocket
Perhaps it does make more sense, but couldn't this person have done the tunnel? @mcknife25

That was one of the cooler parts here.
