holdenrains Yeah, they're super solid clocks, worthy of needing a Korg KMS-30 in my opinion. Those things are tighter than a fishes butt ! .. good if you wanted to sync an 808 with the 12 / 1200. I'm actually going to do a clip on the Korg KMS-30 next week 👍

Even though there is a lot of menu digging, once I watched your video and started playing around with the sampling I got surprised at how direct the sampling is, it really is a pleasure to use. Running some chords out of my synths and messing around with them with multipitch is great fun, but I haven't gotten my head around the sequencer as of yet.
@@DziugasTrollfacas The sequencer is really basic, it broadcasts on 1 channel, and you'll have to avoid the pads that have sounds on them.. unless you want to trigger an SP sound + external MIDI note at the same time. @@tonelab I did get the live pad input recording pretty much instantly, what I should have said is that I couldn't get my head around the step by step sequencing (without recording), because it seems to require either skill, or a lot of guesswork. I do like making complex drum loops on my daw, but that is easy as all hell, as you can see everything represented visually. I tried to get complex Madvillainy style drum loops out of the SP, but listening to that album again it seems that the drum tracks consist mostly of drum loops, and that definitely is an easier route to take. Although I do have to say, for 80s gear the SPs have damn good sequencers, I still have nightmares from trying to record some chords on a Casio CZ5000.
@@DziugasTrollfacas Ahh yeah, make sure you have the quantize set to 16th, at least, before you go into 'step record'. Then, if I remember correctly try use the 'arrow' keys to advance back or forward a quarter note (aka 16th), and as long as 'record' is on it should enter in the pads you hit..
@Phillip Mock well, you need at least the OS disk to boot it up... but you don't need disks if you don't plan on Saving your samples. And there's a lot of people now that just make something in the SP.. then record what they want back into ProTools, or Logic, Ableton etc.. so it's like you're building your own loops or kits. And then it's also possible to get the floppy disk drive taken out and replaced with a floppy disk emulator .. and that can take USB-thumb drives as storage.. and each USB can store hundreds of 'virtual floppy disk' images. So, there's lots of cool ways of improving on the SP.. but I kinda like floppy disks.. flicking thru floppy disks is kinda similar to flicking thru records 🤓
@Phillip Mock You can load drums off Disk.. but then, those drums were 'sampled in' at some point.. a bit like the Chicken before the egg.. you need to sample something into the SP1200 before you can save it, and once you've saved it.. you can load it up later on... but, the 1200 has no default sounds when you turn it on.. having said that.. there is on the SP12. 👍🏻

small tip concerning delete sound, if you hit "Sample" and choose "Assign voice", then it will also delete/overwrite the sound, if something is already recorded on pad.
Well, it's possible.. but, when you enter the Sample module.. the SP will automatically select the next available Pad. You would have to manually go select '#2 Assign Voice' to change that.. and then it does place an 'asterisk' * on the far right of the LCD to indicate, whether or not, there's a Sample 'living' on the Pad you've selected.. and then asks if you'd like to Erase it. So you're not in much danger of 'overwriting' accidentally. 👍🏻

great tutorial ! minor issue: channel outputs 1 to 6 are filtered but you can get the unfiltered signal from the tip of an stereo trs. 7 and 8 are unfiltered. individual outputs 1 to 6 are divided in 3 pairs (1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6) with different "strength" / modes of filtering ...

@@tonelab yes, you mentioned the filtered ouputs. but the labelling below the individual outs (TIP = unfiltered RING = filtered) just goes for all 6 filtered outputs. there is that famous hack where you use stereo TRS cables and where you either fully insert the connector or keep it only half way in to switch between unfiltered and filtered signal. and 1 and 2 have quite a fast envelope on the lowpass filter which is a very SP thing too ... great series of videos of yours for sure !

Yep, by default the SP1200 will 'listen' to MIDI Channel #1. So, make sure your MPC Track is set to the same. Then, you'll need to 'trigger' the SP's 'Pads', via a specific set of 'notes' (that the Pads 'listen' for). This is great thanks for this, have had a mint sp1200 in storage for years never really learned it but am now Can I ask … when I sample a loop into A1 and then copy it to one of the other pads so I can sample from it - when I try truncate the copy I cant edit it it says copied when I goto truncate the copied sample Any ideas ? Just a random question: when I’m sequencing a ‘segment’ and say I don’t like the hi-hat pattern I laid down, how can I just delete the hi hat pattern only and reprogram it? Hey mate, you're welcome 🙏🏻 You sure can 'just delete the hi-hat', it's fairly simple too.. I use this particular function @17:54 ..you can see on the LCD how it says 'Sound or Sequence' (I use it to delete a sequence in the clip.. but you can also select any pad [Sound] and have it Erased from the currently selected Sequence) 👍🏻

@@musicxtn No, it only has the potential to do one or the other..so, you have a choice.. if you key in a Sequence - it will delete the sequence.. if you 'Press a Pad' it will only delete the Pad.. it can't do both. And this is completely separate to the contents of whatever Disk you have inserted.. if you're concerned about the contents on your Disks.. 'flick the little black corner switch-cover on your Floppies' ..that is the 'write-protect' tab.. nothing can Write or Erase from your disk when you can see through the hole 👍🏻
One of the best SP tutorials. Thanks. One thing I havn't seen yet on any video is a detailed explaination of the loop function. I know that the sampleend also represent the loopend and with Fader 5&6 you can set the loopstart. But I wonder how this interacts with the decay-setting of a sample. Is it possible to let sample play 'forever'? What is the standard(default) decay time and what exactly happen in the machine. To my ears the SP loop function sound very special. I might be wrong but it seem that the fade out of a loop is not continous but in steps so with every loopcycle it plays the loop at lower volume. If this is true the looplength will either affect the decaytime in a significant way or it proably affects the number of steps of the decay phase (in other words: the steepness of the 'fade out') Damn I want this machine to analyze all that stuff 😂

Am trying to figure out this function ,I have my Krog Trinity midi with my Sp1200 now the sounds on the 1200 is playing on my Trinity but Am trying to get my get my trinity to play alone with my 1200 when i hit record and play on my 1200 like ,I do my 3000 and 2000xl but the notes be choping and like I said the drums on the 1200 plays on my trinity🤔🤔🤔 how can I have the trinity play alone with the 1200 but using sounds out of my trinity
It's not really an external sequencer, as such.. it can 'trigger' drums, but then you might have to configure the drums on the external device to behave as 'one-shot' samples. About 2-3 hours.. uploading takes half the time 🤦🏻♂️ I’m preparing a few more bits, so hoping to do 1 a week from now on.. getting some studio bits out of storage while in a loose lock down, but also trying to learn some more on lighting and shooting which is all new to me 😏

I use this particular function @17:54 ..you can see on the LCD how it says 'Sound or Sequence' (I use it to delete a sequence in the clip.. but you can also select any pad [Sound] and have it Erased from the currently selected Sequence) 👍🏻

@@musicxtn No, it only has the potential to do one or the other..so, you have a choice.. if you key in a Sequence - it will delete the sequence.. if you 'Press a Pad' it will only delete the Pad.. it can't do both. And this is completely separate to the contents of whatever Disk you have inserted.. if you're concerned about the contents on your Disks.. 'flick the little black corner switch-cover on your Floppies' ..that is the 'write-protect' tab.. nothing can Write or Erase from your disk when you can see through the hole 👍🏻

One thing I havn't seen yet on any video is a detailed explaination of the loop function. I know that the sampleend also represent the loopend and with Fader 5&6 you can set the loopstart. But I wonder how this interacts with the decay-setting of a sample. Is it possible to let sample play 'forever'? What is the standard(default) decay time and what exactly happen in the machine. To my ears the SP loop function sound very special. I might be wrong but it seem that the fade out of a loop is not continous but in steps so with every loopcycle it plays the loop at lower volume.
If this is true the looplength will either affect the decaytime in a significant way or it proably affects the number of steps of the decay phase (in other words: the steepness of the 'fade out')

I would like to get your input and opinion on what you recommend for a turntable (tekniks?) and pre-amp for sampling old vinyl into the SP? Additionally, if you were to use the SP with a DAW like Cubase, do you think sending midi-clock from the DAW to the SP (as opposed to the SP internal clock) has an effect on the rhythm/swing? With a little 'slight of hand'.. hit STOP on the Sequence, switch it into Song Mode - hit PLAY👍🏼

Am trying to figure out this function ,I have my Krog Trinity midi with my Sp1200 now the sounds on the 1200 is playing on my Trinity but Am trying to get my get my trinity to play alone with my 1200 when i hit record and play on my 1200 like ,I do my 3000 and 2000xl but the notes be choping and like I said the drums on the 1200 plays on my trinity🤔🤔🤔 how can I have the trinity play alone with the 1200 but using sounds out of my trinity
It's not really an external sequencer, as such.. it can 'trigger' drums, but then you might have to configure the drums on the external device to behave as 'one-shot' samples. Hey thanks for watching! .. well, there was a limited edition run on these put out by Dave Rossum recently.. but, in terms of the 2nd hand market.. these are getting extremely expensive.. people still go crazy for their distinct sound 👍🏻
Another way of being frugal with your samples is to use a sampler and hook it up to the machine
Thats what I do - I use my MPC Live to audition my samples before resampling them into the SP, pitch them down -5.20 semitones to emulate vinyl at 45rpm
