    Fantastic helmet, had one since 2011ish. Have 4 other helmets and keep coming back to this as my favourite.
    One thing, which I don’t recall you saying, is how roomy they are, important in hot weather too.
    I just replaced my cheek pads and skull cap, along with a new auto darkening visor and pin lock. As good as new again.
    Nice review, Tony

      Thanks David, I didn't mention it no, although some of the other adventure helmets i've tried have more room in the chin bar. As i'm putting more mileage on it, I'm enjoying it more. I got caught in a torrential rain shower on Saturday and it performed brilliantly

    Great review, thank you but 2 omissions:
    1. Many people experience optical “distortion” with the visor lens. It is a deal breaker for some, other people won’t notice it much. Try before you buy!
    2. The reason Arai does not do drop-down sun visors is because they strongly believe that in order to implement them (as other manufacturers do), they have to make compromises in the design of the shell which reduce it’s safety. Makes sense to me.

    • @mancavemoto
      @mancavemoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, yes I didnt notice any distortion from the lens, so it wasnt a point for me. Secondly, I've mentioned this point in other Arai reviews. There are a few 'adventure' styled helmets that don't feature a drop down visor, so again it wasn't something to highlight for this particular helmet.

    Recently purchased this as a replacement for my previous AVG AX8. TX4 is so much quieter and stable at higher speeds. I am 6”6’ so my head is always in the wind and I have to say I am super impressed. Glad I spent the extra money. Can’t wait to take it on an off-road tour.

    As a long time bike commuter in all weathers, there are only two things that matter for helmet tests. Does the visor steam up and does is leak water through the top in downpours.
    I've yet to find a visor that doesnt leak.
    90% of bikers dont ride in bad weather, and only a few occassionally get caught in full on downpours. Most helmets have to conform to safety tests, but full wet wInter testing is rarely done properly. Also, the rubber seals wear quickly over time, so often fail quickly on most helmets

    • @keratubes
      @keratubes 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I own a tour x4 and a BMW "touring" helmet. I'll avoid the tour x4 when the weather is really shitty and/or if it's really cold. I've ridden in the rain and haven't noticed any leak but if I view it more as a well ventilated option for warm conditions.

I bought a bmw GS helmet last year which was a bit of a flop and at £495 or £855 with the coms fitted its an expensive lid , the year before I bought a Bell adventure lid and although not expensive at £195 I find it very
    Noisy , the year before I bought a SCHUBERTH C4 and again was a bit disappointed with that helmet as it wasn’t as well made as my trusty C3 which I’d had for nearly ten years , I think I need to go into a retailer and try an X4 on and see what the fit is like before I part with £500

    One question that comes to mind is how do the respective air flows of this helmet and the Shoei Ex Zero compare? This would seem to have the better airflow, but the Shoei has a look that works on a wider range of motorbikes.

    • @mancavemoto
      @mancavemoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Ex Zero is much like an open face helmet, plenty of airflow to the face, but none around the top of the helmet inside. Somin that respect the Arainis better. But they are two different styles, and you are right in they the Ex Zero looks better with more bikes, but having said that if you take the peak off the tour x4 and have it in a plain colour, you could say the same

    I measure right at their spec large and close to xl. I tried on a large and the skull fit was good but cheek pads very tight even with the 5mm foam removed. I'll soon order an xl but my question is the chin strap was darn short on the large (note this was a 2012 model). Do you know if Arai has increased the chin strap length on newer helmets?
    Thank you

    • @mancavemoto
      @mancavemoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Paul, same here, I would suggest that if the skull fit was good with the Large, maybe go with that and tweak the cheek pads. I initially took the 5mm of foam off, then put it back after a couple of days as the lining bedded in, I was suprised how much difference the 5mm made. Arai also offer a custom fit service to get it just right. As for the chin strap, I don't know the answer, but i've asked the UK distributor if they can confirm...i'll come back to you on that one

    I bought the helmet a couple of months ago and i still dont feel it wearing in. I heard that it takes a really long time to do so. So im waiting but after around 1 hour of wearing it it really quickly changes from extremely comfy to extremely uncomfy. It puts so much pressure on my jaw that i have to take it off because i start seeing black because of the amount of pain.
    Do you recommend me to take out the inner lining or should i wait longer for it to break in?
    I did not use it much in these couple of months because i want it to stay fresh for as long as possible because its so expensive. I used it for around 600-800 miles
    In every other point i love this helmet. I got a black visor which looks even better on my black helmet and when it turns dark outside i just use clear mx goggles for the way home so that missing drop down visor doesnt effect me. Arai claims they do not like to build in drop down visors in their helmets because its like a big hole in the shell which makes the helmet less safe (hope i explained that correctly... im not a native speaker)
    I also think that the visor is a little bit distorted because of the heavy bend it has but i get used to it after a couple of miles every time
    Also i think that the helmet is really hard to pull off so if i ride a whole day i have to take it off around 20 times to relax my jaw... after 5 times it starts to rub my skin a lot so from that point every time i pull the helmet off it hurts more and more until at the end of the day im screaming because of the pain
    That said i ask again if i should wait for it to break in or should i just take out the inner liner?

    • @mancavemoto
      @mancavemoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your message. Sounds odd that it should hurt your jaw so much! If thats the case its certainly worth taking the cheek pads out and peeling off a layer of foam. See if that makes a difference (you can always put it back). Arai helmets are notoriously difficult to remove as the opening is smaller, again to maintain that egg shape. Some of the new Arais have wider openings

      so i finally fixed the problem. first of all i can feel the helmet is worn in now. i took out the layer of foam and it did make a little difference and i will keep it like this now. however the problem was completely fixed by taking out the damn Sena speakers (i feel a little bit stupid for this but i really didnt notice it was them causing most of the pain). i use the sena only with my phone earpods now and it definetely is better in terms of audio quality and muffling wind noise. it takes a while to wire everything up every time i put on the helmet but its worth it.
      im really happy with the helmet now

    How does the agv ax9 fair in comparison?

    • @mancavemoto
      @mancavemoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Similar, depends on your head shape to some extent. The AGV is a physically larger shell for its size. This means it’s more roomy with more space between your face and the visor. The Arai is a more compact helmet, but as such is harder to take off and on. Vision is equally good, perhaps the AGV is a better visor? But the Arai wins hands down on ventilation. AGV is lighter and more flexible with the removable accessories, I found the Arai peak gave less ‘buffeting’ on my Tiger 800
