I bought mine largely off the back of this. There are countless reviews from people who have only just unpacked their helmets, this perspective was invaluable. I'm very happy with mine.
Bought an arai profile helmet years ago. It died a blaze of glory in a head on collision with the asphalt due to a skateboarder needing to cross the street between cars. Awesome quiet helmet. Replaced with a gt air. The first day with the shoei I realized how much louder it was and the goal needing to be reshaped. The arai fit exactly. Now five years later, I am awaiting DHL to bring me my new xd4. I have been obsessing for the last few months.
Hi I just happened upon your channel as I was searching for the Arai. I so appreciate your approach and commentary about the lid. I got into dual sport a year and a half ago after a lifetime of racing motocross, desert and finally road racing. I have 'an Arai head' and it has saved my life on three track occasions. So hearing your experience really helped me, thank you. My Arai's have been comfortable and well made.
Went from Arai XD4 to Klim Krios because of the light weight and available transition lens. Just used it for one year and am now waiting on another Arai XD4 to be delivered sometime this week. There is no comparison. The XD4 for the win. Even without the transition lens.
Leaving the best fitting helmet for anything else makes no sense. You’re “investment” is not only in safety, but riding comfort. The heck with graphics. Buy a solid color, get some ADV decals, and call it a day.
If all helmets meet the same standard (which allows them to be sold) then safety is not a concern....because they all pass the same tests to receive the same mark
P Cat - not really. Look up what those safety tests are and you’ll be amazed. Think of it this way, they are minimum standards for minimal impact. Better helmets will have more engineering in them for impact & comfort. As an example I once took a bike for a test ride at a dealer, used a ‘demo’ helmet that ‘met the standards’. There is no way I would ever ride in that thing. If you gave me a new one I’d sell it immediately. It felt cheap, and fit like a plastic mop bucket. But... it met ‘standards’. Cars all have 4 wheels but there’s a huge difference between a used Yugo and a new Mercedes.
I tried this helmet on yesterday and it truly felt amazing. I currently wear a Shoei Neotec 1 and have been thoroughly satisfied with it but just looking for options for my next helmet. enjoyed your review!
I had awesome experience going to buy my sons 250 Rally. After we finished the deal. We kept talking and hit it off. I told him what we were doing ( living on the bikes ) He went into his house and came out with 2 Aria XD4's- one slightly used and one brand new. He handed them to me and said... ride well. We are loving them! Thanks for the awesome vids man!
I 100% agree with you assessment that buying an Arai will ruin you to other helmets. That is exactly how I feel. Even when I was in a motorcycle shop trying on different helmets, the person working the helmet section warned me not to try on if I already knew it was out of my price range. He said that nothing would feel the same again. I should have listened! I love my Arais, but nothing has felt right since. Research the Arai if you are interested and get one that fits your head shape. Once I did that and found the Arai that fit me, nothing fit the same since.
Thanks for the thoughts, and I bought one in high viz yellow. I like its has a clear shield, allows to use a sunglass underneath during day, and shield only at night. Specifically this helmet is so comfortable to use with eye glasses.. And really like the wide field of view
$800 every 5 years lol .... have you ever talked to a surfer! haha We drop that on 2 , 3 or more new boards every year, each and possible to snap first session! I will gladly pay that for an Arai to keep me potentially more comfortable and safer. Thanks for the video, you have solved my dilemma! Arai XD4 here I come
Being claustrophobic to some degree, I love the extra face room this helmet provides when riding. I use mine on my Goldwing and won't go back. It's aerodynamic, comfy, and most importantly, I feel safe. Let's face it, no helmet provides crash protection beyond 32mph. It's about the road abrasion resistance after that point. I believe the Arai gives you a better chance in both cases. There's a reason most F1 drivers wear Arai helmets. As far as the price is concerned, it's about the same price of a mid-level Klim jacket these days. It's handmade in Japan by a relatively small company obsessed with quality. I'll pay more for that alone - I like supporting companies that care. Hard to find these days. Arai's are so good technically. Comfy to wear. Most importantly, they may keep you alive if this is your head shape. Not a small investment, but a smart one IMHO.
I have an AGV AX-8 and thought it was good but after buying Arai, man has no comparison Arai is from another level. I already tried Nexx Xd-1 and Shoei Hornet but in my opinion Arai XD-4 is the best in the segment maybe many are not in agreement but it is my opinion. Price is the negative point but quality comes at a price. Thanks for sharing, ride safe.
I also have an XD3 for many years, great helmet at top price. Two years ago I bought the Scorpion ADX-1 system helmet, price/quality nothing that can beat this one, but like you say not the same quality as the Arai. So I recently bought the Nexx WED2, this is the one you really need to test, it's at the same quality level as the Arai but for almost half the price!
I've owned 2 Arai XD4. I took off the front bill and it's perfect for my 2016 Z1000 through canyons, fwys or just around town. I've gone 140mph with the XD4 no bill with no issues. Lightweight, comfortable. I have the yellow hi viz one now. I had a white/black that I wrecked on and insurance took it. I love this helmet. Going to buy a 3rd one soon. Currently use Shoei RF1200 (2 of them) or the XD4 that's about 4 years old.
I own the Arai XD 4 and the Shoei hornet X2, the Arai XD 4 is my go to helmet. I'm now eying the Klim Krios pro but I'm hesitating cause my 3 year old XD 4 is still sooooo comfortable & quite. Do I really need to spend another 700 on a new helmet?
Another great review, Tim! Keep up the good work. I wear a Schuberth C3 Pro and I'm very happy with it. I agree with your philosophy. Pay for what you want to protect.
I wear a Bilt Force Ten and a Sedici Avventura both were originally about $200 but I got each on sale for about $100. They are both ECE approved. I typically buy items on sale or in clearance. I read the labels and pay attention to the quality of the materials. Polycarbonate, Aramids, high denier.... I spend the money on riding safety classes.
So finally after all this time, I succumbed and have ordered an Arai XD-4! I had the Shoei GT Air II with the Sena SRL 2 and that was great but with my plans for 2022, I need an ADV helmet. So I bit the bullet!
Just bought one a couple of hours ago for 500 bucks at my local cycle gear. Now having 90 days to return it I’m wondering if I absolutely made the right choice. With the xd5 coming out in April, was this a better choice? I know I’ll be saving 350-400 dollars between the two. Also coming from a shoei gt air this is my first adv style helmet. Will I enjoy this for everyday riding and trips? Just see so many mixed reviews in other videos. Great video
Great review Tim, I can totally understand. I bought a Shoei RF1200 2 years ago and today wore my old HJC modular and I had to stop at home and grab the Shoei for all the same reasons you mentioned. I definitely understand the feeling of being spoiled now. I fortunately do not ride off road with mine so I can get my use out of it I hope. Sometimes you can find a helmet with previous years graphics even 2 or 3 years dated for a considerable discount. Motorcycle Closeouts carries some of these discounted helmets but may not always get the color you want in the size you need. Thanks for the awesome video!
You head shape is similar to mine, did you buy according to the size chart? Did you have to size up or down? I too am coming from cheaper helmets and am looking forward to the upgrade. Thanks for your thoughts.
The issue with transition lenses with a peak is that unless your shield is down all the time the sun would darken the unshaded parts of the visor and not the shaded ones, so you could very well end up with a visor that have holes in the shaded parts just because you rode with the visor up for a while.
Currently I use a 3 year old AFX Rush and a Daytona scull cap depending on the weather. I find the AFX doesn’t ventilate well enough for me due to the fact I put out an excessive amount of body heat. For perspective it’s a 3 minute ride on the highway to my job. After Covid caused everything to shut down my work started taking our temperatures in our temples with a laser thermometer. Mine was 107° F according to the thermometer. I suspect my temperature was lower than my job was actually telling me I should be calling an ambulance with a temperature that high. 15 minutes later it was 98.4. Two days later I bought a scull cap because that’s all my local shop had in my size after everyone got their stimulus check
Bell MX9 MIPS, Red, White and Black so it matches my 2017 Africa Twin. I was pleased, but sorry you experienced it in the first place, that your DOT Approved helmet survived your 70 MPH crash and you are here to tell us that. When I was a teen and 20 something I always wanted the Bell but they were out of my price range. Today things are radically better!
I have an AFX FX-39 dual sport helmet. It is a budget helmet, often sold for under $100 but I've been very happy with it. I flew over my handlebars once and landed squarely on top of my head on a boulder in a dry creek bed. The helmet absorbed all of the impact and it was remarkably painless. I think this model is out of production now but there are still a few in stores. A friend has an identical helmet which was of a different brand so it is apparently sold under various labels.
9:08 I have the Arai Corsair V (Ducati flavour)... awesome lid. Like yourself, I would like to see a Transitions lens for Arai helmets. I have a Transitions lens on my Bell Star Carbon... it is awesome. As the Arai is my go-to lid, I don't get to use the Transitions lens very often.
Hi Tim, I’ve been using a Shoei R1100 since I got back into riding, about 6 years now. I’ve never tried an Arai, although we purchased one for my son-in-law for his birthday back when we started riding. It’s his first and only helmet to date and he loves it. You mentioned that your helmet is very quiet. I have not found my Shoei to be particularly quiet, but it is comfortable. I would like my next helmet to have a visor(my eyes are very sensitive to light) and less noisy. I’ve heard that the different helmet manufacturers typically will favor a certain head shape and that Arai tends to favor a long rather than a round shaped head. Have you found this to be the case? I’m starting to look for a new helmet and I’m certainly going to look at the Arai, although my noggin probably leans more towards the round than long side. Ideally I would like to find a helmet that is quiet, has a visor, is aerodynamic, and has a transitional prescription lens. I know I’m dreaming, but you gotta dream, right?
Thanks for your honest review Tim! I'm looking for an upgrade of my Scorpion EXO AT-950 and am torn between this and the Shoei Hornet...hope to find a used/like new Large XD4 or Hornet...
I don't find it quiet but I do have a shoei neotec. The down side i am a little disappointed with how hard it is to remove everything for washing. The neck roll doesn't come out. But on the plus side I find it very comfortable and it does look very nice.
another great down to earth video Tim. You are so right when you say to not "cheap out" on your helmet. My helmet is a Shoei and I love it. I feel much more secure than I do in a Bilt that I have that has more features. At the end of the day a good helmet is a life saver. I'm mostly a street rider but I'm planning on an adventure summer after this one all over the western U.S. When I embark on that trip I'll be purchasing an adventure bike and leaving my street bikes at home. One thing I'm starting to notice is that more and more street cruiser style riders are opting for full face instead of the brain buckets. I think that is a good thing. Keep up with the great vids. When I make the trip perhaps I'll get down to AZ and I buy you a cup of coffee. Take care and be safe.
Thank you Kyle! I love all different bikes, but if you are traveling in the western states, I think an adv bike would be your best option! So much exploring to do out here. Ride safe! Definitely let me know if you make it out here, I will be roaming this summer as well so we will likely cross paths.
Great review and about the bee in the helmet. That is the main reason I wear earplugs. My worst nightmare is something crawling in my ear as I am riding☠️☠️☠️☠️
I think you're right that the safety difference in helmets is minor as you get into the higher price ranges and you're paying more for luxury and features. I think the big thing to look out for (once you have met that safety threshold) is comfort and fit. I'm currently riding the Scorpion EXO-R420. It's a great helmet with SNELL rating at the $150 price point. But I have noticed that it's probably not the right head shape for me. So in addition to the measuring diameter to get the right size, the round/ intermediate oval / long oval shape really makes a difference. The scorpion is rated "Intermediate oval" but I get a bit of pressure on the forehead, so I guess my head is more of a long oval. Something to look for in my next lid. Also, being a fellow Phoenix rider, I like to have a white helmet and add the dark visor and stripe of black tape as per your recommendation. I'm sure you'll let us know what you settle on.
Same here. I have the R420 because of the safety features and Snell rating at the low price point. Downside is that it is the opposite of aerodynamic. Not a great freeway helmet. Much bobblehead effect.
Tim , no bs ......i began motorcycling this past July at 53 ! My 1st ride on my new Versys 650 , 15 minutes in a yellow jacket got in through my visor. It was 97 degrees . I was riding with the visor up 2 clicks and a yellow jacket turns out is what got in. Stung directly over my right eyebrow. Thankfully, my good sense led me not to panic and lose control of bike. No one around, pulled over. etc.I get stung somewhat regularly as i landscape and i spend all of my days outside. Something that should be on everyones mind in case it happens. Deal w the sting and pull over safely.
Have ridden for 10 years on the XD4 just bought a new one ahead of the XD5 release saved some money got a great helmet. Nice review your right what else equals it.
Well Tim I have tried lots of helmets. I have several that I can't stand I went way out on a lim and even bought a Schuberth, that was a waist of money. face shield won't stay up and cover peaces keep falling off bringing the wind noise way up. HJC modular has been good and bell Pit boss are the two I keep going back to. I will even use my Bell full face at times. I have several that I bought used a few times and put on the shelf to sit.
I've been through a number of them too. Recently went to the Bell MX9 and it's been great so far. Sorry to hear about the Schuberth, that's an expensive helmet to not be happy with.
Put simply, the Arai XD is the best ADV helmet around. I have had 2 and they out perform all other brands. They are hand made in Japan by expert’s. No other helmet comes close for comfort and performance.
My favorite helmet is the Shoei Hornet X2 Dual Sport, $600. I use it for both street and dirt rides, have about 30,000 mi on it in last 3 yrs. I just recently got my second one for $500 plus tax. The Shoei DS is much quieter than a MX Helmet with goggles, has the best shield that will not rattle in any position at any speed, has a vented visor that works great too... Ride On!
As to the bee thing, I had a bee in my helmet as I was going over the Logan pass in Glacier Park Montana. I like you, wasn't sure what it was. It was crawling round in my beard. Stupidly, I used my tongue to investigate and he stung me. Luckily, I m not allergic and I didn't drive off the cliff. I've been using a 3/4 helmet for the past 10 years. I love the ventilation and the way you feel so connected to the environment. I think that I'm actually a better rider with this kind of helmet. I'm 65 now and I've changed some. I like quiet, and I like to listen to music when I ride. I now ride a new Africa Twin. I am very excited about this bike. The things you said about this helmet really caught my interest. You're right it is really expensive, but sometimes, like good whisky, it's worth it. I'm still shopping.
I've got a Shoei Neotec 2 flip front which is super comfortable. I wanted to buy a helmet with a big visor and looked at Shoei Hornet and Arai Tour X4. The Arai seemed to have the edge in terms oaf ventilation, but I've never tried one, so I don't know if it would suit my head shape. In the end I've just bought a Shoei Hornet second hand on ebay that has had very little use. I've bought used helmets before and I always make sure I trust the seller and ask the right questions about how it was used and stored. Thanks for the review.
For me my helmet is the most personal piece of equipment I have and comfort is key when I'm wearing it all day. I've owned Arai's because they fit my head, they are comfortable, the field of view is great, and they are fairly quiet. I totally understand the budget thing...but...you are going to be inside your helmet for how many hours over a year, two, three, or five years? You even said that the padding was still great after 5 years. Look around, I think you'll find a lower price. I decided to go with a solid color on my new XD4 (white) and it saved me a big chunk of change. Like you I'm in the southwest and the idea of a white helmet sort of made sense. Thank you for sharing your adventures and thoughts.
I have the XD-4 and I just bought replacement pads and shield (as well as a defogger strip for the new shield.) I started with a Bell street helmet, but got into adventure riding so succumbed to a) the BMW jacket and b) the adventure style helmet - thus the Arai. Like you, I have loved the helmet. The couple of things that I have seen is that my pads actually wore out pretty quickly (It's been four years since I bought it, but the pads have needed replacing for quite a while.) I also find that the shield doesn't lock properly - there's always a slight crack between the shield and the helmet structure. It was fine when I first bought it. I will confess that I took a pretty hard fall (actually concussed myself) on one of my trips along the Colorado BDR and have not replace the helmet. As you said, it's hard to pull the trigger on an $800 helmet (and I can afford it.)
I have the XD4 helmet and love it, did not pay that much though it was in the 500's but I ordered one in just plain silver. Don't really care for a lot of graphics
been using one as a daily, initially very good on road noise, however after a few months gets very loud and wind finds it way up ya neck too easily, also internals not easy to clean as not everything is removable. bit of a let down. However i love the massive view port on it too much.
My XD4 is about 1 year old now. Maybe 15,000 miles. It's my second one. Used my first one for 6 years, it was rough but still OK but my BMW dealer pointed out that the foam was getting little hairline cracks so I tried several other loaners from friends....nothing worked so I forked out the cash. My wife and I average 15-20 K miles per year, on our 4 th GS, this one is a 2017 Adventure. Enjoy your videos!
Arai XD4 (5yrs) and a Schuberth c3 modular (3.5yrs). I'm extremely happy. I plan on reconditioning my helmets with new paint and cushions. I could wear these forever. But I'm different I don't need the latest and greatest. I've always said take care of what you got as if your life depended upon it and you we always have it. If I had to up grade I would consider the schuberth modular adventure helmet, E1. I would then wear my other helmets (aria or c3) when I know there is a greater risk of falling. Good luck!
Looking forward to seeing your new helmet . I have the LS2 Metro and very happy with it for the price you can" t beat it. . Around 2 years old. It is the flip up With the main color white with black and some dark gray. Similar to yours. Good Graphics and the most comfortable.
I have the Arai XD4 and I have had it for more than 7 years. It's great! Oval shape fits my head much better than my old cheap HJC. The padding does hold up really well over time. I also love the brow for blocking sun. The only things I don't like about it: The face shield doesn't stay up very well. I've replaced the screws (which are plastic), added plastic washers, and none of it worked. I eventually added velcro to the brow, which hooks the visor and holds it up in the wind. It's also got poor air flow even with all of the scoops open on the top, they don't do anything at all. It needs bigger air holes. The strap has D-rings which work well, but they are hard to use with gloves on, I'd prefer a clip. The internal foam pieces can be taken out and washed, I do it often and they hold up well to that. The helmet has no reflector tape or graphics, i had to add that for night driving. I wish it had a modular flip up chin so I could drink from a water bottle. Even with all of that I do still love this helmet.
Just bought a sedici sistema 2 modular. Been out of a full face for over 35 hrs and felt I want to get back into one. Wasn’t ready to drop 8 hundred on a shoei or shubert. So far after 3k miles it seems like a good choice - comfortable, quiet, and well made. Was a bitch tryptophan get my Sena 50s on it. I found that going to a dark tinted face shield made all the difference in keeping the heat out of the helmet.
I got my first street bike helmet in March 2008, when I picked up my R1200GSA.The ARAI duel sport, with visor has proven good for me. May of 2018, we replaced our helmets, because of ridiculous replacement laws. I went with another ARAI, my wife has a peticular shape, went with the SHOEI, because ARAI did not make the same helmet she found most comfortable. Have fun, ride offroad
I had an Arai Signet-Q (full face) for about 3yrs, and loved that helmet....except for the shield change. It would take some fiddling with, and I would get so aggravated with it. Switched to a Shoei RF-1200 and haven't looked back. Honestly, either Arai or Shoei is a great choice. Both are high quality, hand made helmets.
Thoughts on the Bell MX-9 Adv Mips? I like the idea of it from a safety point of view but haven't tried it on yet. If it fits the head and the budget, you could always fix the noise problem with ear plugs.
I am sorely tempted by the Arai but also agree with your desire for fresh gear, especially helmets. I start my new travel season with a fresh bucket every spring. It just puts the cherry on the sundae to start my first long tour of the year in a fresh helmet. The previous year's hat is still good for knocking about but by the time winter weather shuts my shield the old boot goes up on the trophy shelf and the new helmet becomes my daily. The last three years it's been the Sedici Systema. I use a modular because I wear glasses and the Systema is made of quality material, reasonably light and not too noisy.
It is the Dakar, the newer version looks slightly different. I did a review on it a while back, it is somewhere on my channel. I am happy with it overall.
@@FTAAdventures yes the helmet is amazing. I installed cardo packtalk slim with JBL speakers and the sound is just amazing. You should get one if you haven't already. Keep making the videos!!!!!
After 11 years I think it's time to replace my Chaser V. But I think I have the same problem as you have. Being spoiled by Arai... Those photochromic lenses... I'm wondering if that's a handy feature in tunnels over here in europe... If you live in a country that does not do tunnels. than it's golden!
Love my XD4 (Flare Red), but I do get some neck strain in high cross winds. Maybe my Africa Twin wind screen doesn't provide the protection yours does.
That's a great point, my windscreen sends the majority of head winds just over the top of my helmet so I'm sure that helps. But on the same bike compared to other helmets there is still a difference that I've noticed
I gave up on the helmet peak. The wind sail effect and noise was too much. Using a HJC RPHA70, light, much quieter, good padding, has a drop down sunscreen if the sun is directly in my face.
I have the exact helmet, even the same graphics. I've had it for five to six seasons. The price of a new one is crazy, so instead of buying a new one, I replaced the cheek pads and visor. Trying to get one more season from it. One thing that stands out is the peak and aero dynamics. I have a Shoei dual sport Hornet which is a good helmet, but the peak didn't block the sun and the helmet would lift in the wind. I had a sore neck after a season of use. I will be getting a new one next year and not sure what I will purchase, has to be a dual sport helmet.
It doesn't catch much wind, but rgere are areas where winds are bad and all helmets will be affected. My Shoei Hornet gave me a sore neck during one season.
Just bought one Xd4 5 mos ago and feels quite sturdy and snug fitted, but not tight. Think it's a fantastic helmet and will kept your head save at any particular situation. Payed mine in few installments with PayPal , six months with no intereste which it was excellent. Love my Arai.
I'm a bit of a helmet addict, and always had Arai's (though never an adventure helmet). Started out with a gloss black Arai Condor, then got a white/silver Arai Chaser, both full-face helmets. Recently bought a new bike, and got new gear as my old helmets were way past their shelf-life, and the first one I got was a black & white Arai Freeway Classic (open-face). I got knocked off my bike by a car on day four, and had to retire the helmet. That's when I kinda switched over to Shoei. I now have a modular Neotec II (Excursion TC-5), an NXR Ruts TC-6 (US: RF-1200), and a gloss black X-Spirit III (US: X-Fourteen). I've found I prefer full-face helmets over open-face or modulars. The Neotec is too heavy, and I'm not a fan of ratchet straps. The X-Spirit III is my new favorite. I recently also bought an Arai RX-7V (US: Corsair-X) because of the graphic design (2018 IoM TT), and while a great helmet, it's a lot noisier than the X-Spirit III, doesn't seal as well (I get a lot of airflow even with all vents closed), and waterboards me when the vents are open while I'm riding in the rain. It is, however, friggin' gorgeous, and extremely comfortable, but I have an Arai shaped head. I got dark smoke visors for all my full-face helmets (the Neotec has a dropdown internal visor), and all visors (both clear and dark smoke) have 120 or EVO pinlocks installed. I also always carry a pair of photochromatic sunglasses in case it's too dark to ride with a dark smoke visor, or when I want more airflow to the face. Haven't had a bee in my helmet yet, but did have wasps in there at least 4 times over the past year. Luckily I never got stung. They either got dazed from the impact to my face (ouch) and crawled out when I was stopped, or got caught between the comfort liner and chin curtain.
Thanks for sharing 👍 Arai Tour Cross 3 is my all time favourite helmet! Very good quality and comfortable. The paintwork and fitment is nice, like the padding and cheek pads, very comfortable. I have Arai XD3 in 2008 and XD4 in 2014, I am happy user during these years. Today I bought another XD4 Detour, love it! 😍🤙
thank you for this test. quick question please. when you rescue the head does the helmet move please? I just bought in size M. I am well in height but on the sides I have the impression of floating
Got an XD4 (my japanese wife is from Saitama)... I'd never have anything better!!! Like you, other good cheap stuff... but after the Arai... nah. I'll buy the same in a different color. :))))) Awesome videos boss!! Keep up the good work!!
Hey Tim, First of all awesome videos you do. I'm following your channel since quite some time and I'm loving it. I was on the hunt for a new helmet because I destroyed my old one in an accident on gravel roads end of last year. I was lucky that I used a full face helmet otherwise I would not have any skin on my face left. When I was looking for a new helmet I was actually checking out the ARAI XD4 but I then settled with a Nexus XWild2 (~$ 575 US). It's DOT and ECE approved and I think that it would get even a SNEL rating if it would not have a retractable sun visor. Since no transition lenses are available for it - I would love it - the sun visor is a must for me. The peak of the Nexus is a little bit too weak to use it at highway speed since you hear quite some buffering but overall I really like it. Didn't get much riding up to now this year here in Chicagoland but this helmet is for sure much more silent than my old one and way more comfortable. Keep up the awesome work. Cheers
Hey Tim! I’m just wondering why you want to retire the Arai? I mean it only has a few scratches. I’ve always had Arais’ as well, they are top notch and progressive. I thought maybe you could spend the money in a better area, no? Or maybe you just want that transitional visor😉. Love your videos thanks for all the tips!
I did want the transition lens, but really the helmet had experienced a few real drops and it is getting close to the shelf life, so I figured better safe than sorry.
Hey Tim, I have tried Shoei (Rf1000, rf1100, & Gt-air, and Schuberth C3. I always go back to shoei, they are the quietest and most comfortable. I am currently using the Neotec (modular) and I couldn't be happier. I love being able to flip up the helmet to get air on my face, get a drink from my camelbak, or even eat a snack without having to stop. When I retire this one, I will be going with the Neotec 2. Once you get used to a modular helmet, you won't go back. And Shoei has transition visors as well. Check them out.
I am a little late to the party but I am seeing this as I am in the market for an Adventure Helmet like the XD4- Hornet-Kyros Pro, Maybe the Nolan N70, Xlite x551, Riding with a Bell Race star at the moment but I bought an upright riding position bike recently having not had one in a very long time and I want a AH. Nice review, it seems to correspond with what others are saying as well. I have an old Anthony Hopkins Monster Energy replica Arai that now sits in a shelf in the lounge that I loved and I would like to go back to an Arai but with the exchange rate a new XD4 is over $1,100 NZD dang it.
I hear you Tim, I had a shelf full of helmets. Have thinned them down to a Scorpion EXO AT950, Schuberth E1 that is taking forever to break in and a bought on a whim, Bilt full face cuz I liked the graphics and it was super comfortable as soon as I put it on. I had an Arai years ago and loved everything about it but the price. I'm into modular for the convenience and accessibility and Aria doesn't make a modular. Good luck on your big adventure.
I just got a Shoei RF 1200 Rumpus, and it is a big step up for me since I had a HJC, I padding is much better and it is going to take awhile to break in. Love the video's.
Have a look at the Nexx X.wed2 (they make the touratech helmet) and the X-Lite x-551 both in my opinion great, internal sun shield and very lightweight, Nexx better if you ever mate with goggles. What model Klim is your jacket?
Same same re reaction to bees. Hand and foot ballooned as a kid, but I haven't been stung in over 30 years.... I sure hope, like you, that I no longer react like I used to. Thanks for the review, I'm in the process of helmet hunting
I bought mine largely off the back of this. There are countless reviews from people who have only just unpacked their helmets, this perspective was invaluable. I'm very happy with mine.
Crashed in this helmet pretty bad and I can say most likely saved my life. I'm planning on buying another one once I'm ready to ride again.
Good review on the helmet. Perfect timing, too. I've been thinking about pulling the trigger on the XD-4 now I will much more confidence.
I have been using Arai for over 10 years, and I've just ordered my first X4,
Good to know I've ordered well.
Went from Arai XD4 to Klim Krios because of the light weight and available transition lens. Just used it for one year and am now waiting on another Arai XD4 to be delivered sometime this week. There is no comparison. The XD4 for the win. Even without the transition lens.
This is the second time i have watched this video. i just bought the XD4 Africa twin version. Love it.
Leaving the best fitting helmet for anything else makes no sense. You’re “investment” is not only in safety, but riding comfort. The heck with graphics. Buy a solid color, get some ADV decals, and call it a day.
yeap, that is what I did with my second arai, plain white color for 500 bucks, xd4 again, pretty happy
Wrap it and save money
I prefer white helmets.. especially in the Southwest because they are highly visible to drivers and I believe they are cooler under a hot sun ☀️
That is so amazing! People are awesome. Ride safe my friend!!
Love seeing stuff like this
I 100% agree with you assessment that buying an Arai will ruin you to other helmets.
Your reviews are relaxing too watch. Very different from most channels out there. 👍🏽
I use a Arai Signet X. Love it. No pressure points and comfortable. Keep up the great videos.
Thanks!
Thanks Michael!
Would you get a used XD3 in excellent condition for 300 bucks (like new) or would you buy a brand new Bell MX9 adventure?
Great videos btw!
Thanks my friend! I will check out Motorcycle Closeouts, sounds like theres some good deals over there.
You head shape is similar to mine, did you buy according to the size chart? Did you have to size up or down? I too am coming from cheaper helmets and am looking forward to the upgrade. Thanks for your thoughts.
I hear you mate. I've got an Arai head. I've tried other helmets and with a rare exception, none fit. I've got 4 Arai lids.
I am glad to report the DOT helmet worked out for me in that situation! Bell makes great helmets by the way, I've tried a few of them.
There are transitional pinlock inserts for some Arais. Unfortunately no full face shields yet, hope they're going to eventually do that.
Love the Klim jacket - which one is it?
I've been using the new klim carbon fiber modular helmet for 3 months now, I love it and the transitional lens is the best!
Thanks Timothy well said. I did not know about the R420 being SNELL rated, that's a great deal!
Same here. I have the R420 because of the safety features and Snell rating at the low price point. Downside is that it is the opposite of aerodynamic. Not a great freeway helmet. Much bobblehead effect.
The newer white XD4s have a piece of black foam glued under the sun visor to stop the glare issue.
And yes, the white helps in the 42C temps.
Can you guys get Airoh? The commander isn’t bad at all. Also quite.
Hi im just now seeing and enjoying this video, thanks!
Hi mate, did you try the klim krios pro?
I love mine. I am on #2 and just ordered replacement pads because I cannot find a better helmet either. Thanks for videos. They are awesome!
Have ridden for 10 years on the XD4 just bought a new one ahead of the XD5 release saved some money got a great helmet. Nice review your right what else equals it.
Good choice!
I use an AGV AX8. It's the best I could afford. I've seen the Arai in stores, but I've never tried it on because it's so out of my price range.
Thanks Cindy, AGV makes a great helmet.
Enjoy your videos!
yes, I have had one for 7 yrs. solid black. I will keep it as long as I can.
Good luck!
Well said, thanks for the comment. I had considered refurbishing the Arai, just getting a bit close to its shelf life.
Great review - thanks!!
That is what I switched too and I am very happy with it. I will be reviewing it once I've spent some more time with it. Great option in my opinion.
I've had a number of bees in my bonnet. If you get a bee in your bonnet it means you're a bit of a honey.
Thanks Bill! That's a great analogy, the cherry on top! The Sedici is a sharp looking helmet.
Thanks for the video. If you don't mind me asking, what model of Klim jacket is that? Thanks
It is the Dakar, the newer version looks slightly different. I did a review on it a while back, it is somewhere on my channel. I am happy with it overall.
I wish arai would make their pro shade shield for the xd4
What do you have rapped on your engine guard? and where can I find that. BTW, After watching this video, I ordered myself the same helmet.
The crash bars have a sports tape on them, it started out black but faded. The helmet is great you will probably love it.
@@FTAAdventures yes the helmet is amazing. I installed cardo packtalk slim with JBL speakers and the sound is just amazing. You should get one if you haven't already. Keep making the videos!!!!!
Hi. what caused your fall on highway at 70 mph ? And did you have any other injuries as a result ? Thankfully you are ok ! Be safe !
Front tire rapid deflation 😬 No major injuries, just road rash.
Worth giving the Nexx WED2 a look. Found mine to be a decent lid.
How do you like the xd4 on the highway?does the peak catch much wind?
It doesn't catch much wind, but rgere are areas where winds are bad and all helmets will be affected. My Shoei Hornet gave me a sore neck during one season.
Just bought one Xd4 5 mos ago and feels quite sturdy and snug fitted, but not tight. Think it's a fantastic helmet and will kept your head save at any particular situation. Payed mine in few installments with PayPal , six months with no intereste which it was excellent. Love my Arai.
yup are awesome man
wich jacket you use i want to buy the klim marrakesh black
wich tire you use on the r1200 gs lc is it good and worth it
I'm a bit of a helmet addict, and always had Arai's (though never an adventure helmet).
Thanks for sharing 👍
Arai Tour Cross 3 is my all time favourite helmet! Very good quality and comfortable. The paintwork and fitment is nice, like the padding and cheek pads, very comfortable. I have Arai XD3 in 2008 and XD4 in 2014, I am happy user during these years. Today I bought another XD4 Detour, love it! 😍🤙
same way here. unless it's cold or raining....shield up. nice review
Too funny bought this helmet (XD4 in white) last week I dont see any other helmet in my near future this thing is sweet....Thanks for the review 😎
Dont blame you, that helmet is great!
thank you for this test. quick question please. when you rescue the head does the helmet move please? I just bought in size M. I am well in height but on the sides I have the impression of floating
Thanks for the video. If you don't mind me asking, what model of Klim jacket is that? Thank you very much in advance.
Had mine for 2 years. Could never get the fogging under control
Arai XD-4 and Nolan N44 EVO are my 2 helmets!
Got an XD4 (my japanese wife is from Saitama)... I'd never have anything better!!! Like you, other good cheap stuff... but after the Arai... nah. I'll buy the same in a different color. :))))) Awesome videos boss!! Keep up the good work!!
Hey Tim,
First of all awesome videos you do.
Cheers
Thank you very much! Glad you had your face protected on that spill. Ride safe my friend!!
Bought bell mx-9 adventure DLX best $250 i ever spent. Added a chin skirt drastically cut down wind noise. The transition lens alone is a great deal!
Hey Tim,
I have tried Shoei (Rf1000, rf1100, & Gt-air, and Schuberth C3.
The neotec is definitely on my list of helmets to try out. Glad to hear Shoei is using transitions now too!
Thank you Larry! The E1 is on my list of helmets to try out at some point.
The jacket is the Klim Dakar, very happy with it so far. I did a review on it a few weeks ago.
Same same re reaction to bees. Hand and foot ballooned as a kid, but I haven't been stung in over 30 years.... I sure hope, like you, that I no longer react like I used to. Thanks for the review, I'm in the process of helmet hunting
in those 5 years, have you ever change the inner liner? if not, that cemented Arai's quality
