  • @SkatRadioh
    @SkatRadioh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    The Bell MX-9 MIPS is definitely a solid entry choice from my experience with it. I’ve enjoyed it despite issues of screw mounts falling out or not working with their rubber spacers and plates. It could vent a bit better, but cracking the transitions shield is a pretty easy common practice. I’ve used the breathbox for the snow version during short winter commutes at 0-10F and never bothered using the heated shield. It now easily hosts a Cardo Packtalk (Slim custom mounted to the side, but Bold should mount out of the box) rigged with all audio to a GoPro Hero 6 on a ProShot mount. Peak is optional for those who may spend some time on the highway.
    I’ll consider the Arai XD-4 or a few other options if I truly need to upgrade. I’m unsure without testing, but it would be nice to cut down on some of the external noise if possible. Even with the thin yet breathable breathbox and it’s chin curtain, Bell’s MX-9 lacks any kind of block to wind and noise from underneath. That’s great on slow hot rides or hot rides in general. I might consider weight since I’m adding a bunch accessories, but I’m not usually feeling like too many helmets are hard on my neck.
    Great video, I always enjoy them!

    I took that Arai (same colour and all) through Australia last year and it's an amazing helmet!! I couldn't agree more with Ryan on the praises of the Arai! And boy did we get heat and dust and cold and rain crossing a continent in 16 days... tip top.

      I bought the XD4 as my first helmet (I'm 42, rookie rider) half a year ago, and I had a hard time justifying the price tag. Kept trying other alternatives. Kept coming back to the XD4. Finally took the plunge at my local dealer and after the usual chat he went "this is your FIRST helmet? Sir, you're already making the right choices the first time" . I felt confident and happy with my choice, but my bike (and license) was still a month off. Now I've worn it every day. +2C, +30c, rain, wind, short rides with mates, and 250km stints to a family emergency. It feels weird to say it, but it's completely brilliant. Coming from someone who's never ridden in anything else, that's obviously a tame statement, but you owe yourself to try it. I ride without the peak (commuting and short joyrides) and I love the look. My two friends I often ride with wear Shoei GT Air and ..the previous model.. and they both ride with earplugs. I don't. Not even for two hours at 150km/h on the motorway. It's *that* good.

      I was going for a Arai tour-x 4 then I noticed it doesn't have a sun visor. Isn't it annoying ? I'm used to it and unsure I can do without one.

    • @CriticalRider
      @CriticalRider 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You can get a dark visor from Arai or wear sunglasses. Internal sun visors make the helmet less safe and that's why Arai won't put them in their helmets. It's also why they get Snell safety certification and others don't.

    I have watched Ryan for a while and he is invariably entertaining and when he gets into the technical it is accurate. I learned much from his video on DOT vs Snell. I researched hard for a dual sport for an Alaska trip in 2019. I was biased toward BMW as I own a K1200GT and did own an 1150GS. I was leaning toward the BMW F800GSA and his video on that bike sealed that decision. I now own one. Before I watched this video I bought an Arai XD 4 because of the Snell rating. What he says here is right. After a Nolan and 4 HJCs including the RPHA ST I really like the XD4. Quiet and great fit. I never got the right fit that from any Shoei I tried. It should come with pin lock. It was fogging in the rain last week. Nice work to the whole F9 team.

    Notice you mentioned several times 1390grams instead of 1.39kg
    It’s like saying 49oz instead of 3.06 lbs.
    I know we live in a world where there are different measuring systems but let’s try to keep it simple. 1000 grams = 1Kg
    Like there are 1000cents in $10. No one talks about buying a hat for 1000 cents :)

    I have that Scorpion lid, actually that exact orange one, and I love it! I find it really comfortable, and after years of breaking arms off sunglasses I put a ton of value on the drop down sun visor. Had it about 2 years and it only seems to get more comfy. Will agree it's a bit loud, but this helmet and some decent earplugs are a great combo. Enormous value and features for the price IMO

    I ride an Arai XD4, always have, always will. Yes, it is the King, and long live the King! However, I like the way the Scorpion has gone about building a value-for-money modular helmet that has ADV cred. Its crash-worthy, functional and cheap! Way to go Scorpion! As for the Schubert, I found it very claustrophobic, hot, expensive and the fact that the internal visor lever is exactly in the same spot I put my comms module really sucks. Nah, give me the Scorpion any day and I have recommended to my friends and my son!

    One other interesting thing about the Arai is that the screws holding the peak and visor on are designed to sheer if the force going through the peak in a crash is too much, meaning again, less torque applies to the neck. Same principal as the rear plastic vents you mentioned.

    I have both the Arai and the Klim helmets. The Arai is not so perfect. The visor is difficult to change and it does seem to distort vision. It is not any quieter than the Klim either. I prefer the Klim, but I agree it could do with more padding for highway use. I await the Arai XD-5!

  • @saidnobodyever711
    @saidnobodyever711 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thanks for the great video as always Ryan. Looks like the Arai XD4 is called the Tour-Cross 3 here in Japan. There also seem to be different graphic options here, and the base model (no graphics) has an RRP which equates to around US$400 before sales tax (which you should be able claim back if you bought it as a tourist...)

      The only problem for me with Transition Visor, is in end-day, with lot of Sunlight, but not enough UV to tint the visor.

    If you want a cheaper Klim Krios and don't care about the name: Nishua Enduro Carbon. Got one a couple of months ago for 199€ (~$199,000, i guess), and it's based on the same Uvex molds as the Krios. It has more standard, narrow carbon weave, but also super lightweight and technically identical features.

    Like my arai quantum II from years ago, the xd4 accommodates the klingon bump above my forehead. No hot spots or splitting headaches after 30 minutes. The beak definitely catches wind above 60 mph. Ventilation is pretty darn good at the expense of noise (higher speeds) and shield fogging (low speeds).

    I took the scorpion adventure helmet battlefage colour. It's a really good product.
    The unique issue is with the pinlock that tends to move down, losing the sealing. So you have to push it above to make sure that it remains in position, this happens probably due to the high curvature of the visor.
    For all the rest is a very good product, for the right price. I'll probably rebuy it. For it was better than my previous agv compact.

    The Klim Krios Pro is a $800 helmet after taxes. You would expect perfection in all aspects and it's almost there BUT the visor will NOT stay where you place it. Open it up a few notches for extra air, first little dip or bump in the road and SLAM down it comes! I love everything about this helmet except the hinge plates. They are very cheaply made. It makes me wonder if anyone that actually rides tests them?? It is a $800 helmet WT Actual F?!

    I also tried many helmets but keep coming back to my 4 year old xd4. Its fits as nice as it was new, its smal and has decent ventilation. I wish it was a little quieter but earplugs on long rides helps a lot. Quality of the materials and build quality are top notch. I dont think that something will check as many boxes as Arai does.

    The Klim is a copy paste of this 2010 helmet from Uvex Enduro Carbon, now branded in Germany as Nishua Enduro Carbon (270€ ...)
    www.louis.eu/artikel/nishua-enduro-carbon-enduro-helmet/215086
    Same helmet as the Klim Pro Adventure if you ask me ...

    Anyone else tired of seeing these stupid "drop down" sunshades? Let's see...64% of the people in the world wear glasses, 11% contacts (apparently, either helmet designers are ignorant of this (Google?), or, they just decide to add weight, cost, and bulk, while interfering with ventilation), all for a "feature" most of us can't use. Bulky, ~4lb helmets that don't breath, don't work for warm weather slower speed off road riding. Weight increases neck injuries. You'd think at least they could see how many MX9 adventures Bell sells, and get a clue. I love Shoei and Arai quality, and own both, but the Arai is claustrophobic with the chin bar right on your face (and a very dated appearance), and if you don't have a round head, sizing is problematic. The Shoei "adventure" models are too street oriented when it comes to weight and venting. I just bought my second $220 MX9 Adv., and will stick with that until there's a better option for those of us that that actually ride trails and road on the same day.

    I prefer inexpensive quality helmets like the Nolan N70s and Airoh's for dual sport. It is because dirt/adv riding is prone to scratches. I won't buy an expensive helmet only to chip the beautiful paintwork with crashes and dirt. Plus I get the chance to buy another helmets so that one doesn't wear off. Although, the content is all about Best ADV/Dual Sport helmets for 2018 and it is worth to watch. Quality content as always F9!

    I know my question has nothing to do with helmets but I must ask...I'm looking for a SUMO built for ALL TERRAINS (Highway, woods, dirt track, moto gp track and can do jumps) any suggestions or definitive picks?

    What about safety of Scorpion? EXO 920 got quite low rating of 2 stars from SHARP, with especially poor side impact protection. EXO-AT950 seem to build upon EXO 920 comparing main shell. Only chin looks new. Or am I wrong and those are very different?

    Every Arai I have owned for 20+ years I have loved EXCEPT the XD4. I'm just south of you in WA state, but this helmet is just in a constant state of fogged for all but 2 months out of the year. The pinlock option is trash without modifying the pins and it blocks a lot of vision, but it's the only functional no-fog solution. So, this is your only review I just can't agree on. A helmet I can't see out of is useless.

    Good review once again Ryan. I currently own the XD4. It is light for sure. But it’s a bastard to get on. Especially as it roll the top of my ears down and it is a nightmare fixing that. Also finding the proper cheek pad width has been an exercise in futility. I also think it is horribly noisy. Seems like an echo factory at the top. Made riding my drz400s to miserable wearing it. The AT 950 I replaced it from. Better all around, except the neck roll design is nothing less than stupid. Why I will never own another one, it doesn’t really have anything but pressure to keep it in.

    You see... I actually ride my dual sport bike as intended. Smashing through the un-tamed wild. And when you do that, you are going to scratch/ding/chip your helmet into raggy condition in no time. My point is, I can't see any reason in hell to spend SEVEN HUNDRED DOLLARS on a helmet I'm going to destroy.

    Look, I just fucking love the videos. I ve been a subscriber for like 3 months or so, and I've seen preety much all of your videos since I'm soon going to buy my first bike (Honda cbf 125). I very usually comment in TH-cam but I think it's time to do so. Thank you for making me preety much an expert in helmet safety lol, I've reaserched a lot of things you are talking about for the helmets and I have to say you are always right. I'm very comfortable taking your opinionas a truth right now. Anyway, thank you very much for your work, just know you made a difference in my life introducing me to the bike-world. You are such a talented person, keep up the work, great things are on the way..!!!

    How's the *vertical* field of view of XD-4 as compared to EXO-AT950? Just by looking at them the EXO-AT950 has larger shield but I wonder when wearing the helmet if your face is closer to the shield in XD-4?

    Can you please review the BMW G310 GS Adventure Bike. I just love your videos and you being an adventure rider, it would be really great to watch your review rather than the ones available online where they just read the brochure. It would be great if you could add a comparison with Kawasaki Versys X-300 and Honda CRF 250. Thanks man for all the great content. Keep it up. :)

    Great reviews, as always! Not a fan of flip ups and internal visors: they add weight and complexity. Happy owner of an older MX9 for three years now and will likely replace it with a new one in the next year or so. I wish they made the peak easier to remove and adjust. I remove it if I'm facing a long stretch of slab as it is pretty smooth without it...but I have to carry the adapters and make sure I dont drop the screws in the process.

    We can't all be TH-cam video personalities nor can we all afford Arai X4 ADV helmets which are undoubtedly the gold standard. Unless of course you are a famous actor / personality , Have a large backing and budget to make a documentary about your travels which means you are not riding for pleasure but for $$ or are an established TH-cam female personality who is constantly bubbly with an on screen presence to match ( hide the tough times) and then are sponsored by large corporations and suppliers like FortNine. 99% of those out there are using their own income to support their riding / travels. Sponsorships are just passed on to the retail market.

    I have the Schuberth E1 and rain gets on the inside of the visor! That’s really bad given what it costs. Mine also has issues with the flip up/down mechanism. I prefer my Cabernet Tourmax as it’s more reliable and doesn’t leak. That’s mad given the E1 cost three times as much.

    Nice. I own a Scorpion AT950 and one side of the chin bar is locked and won’t release after two years and I’ve been pondering a new helmet. Think I’ll try the Arai and get my 950 fixed.

  • @Propelled
    @Propelled 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The E1 is crap. The peak visor is a flimsy vibration prone POS. Fogs badly even with the pinlock. Cheap garbage plastic pins break easily. It craps the visor covers like it was designed to do it. Worst helmet purchase I ever made.

    I bought a Shoei RF-1200 on the recommendation that it was quiet.
    It's louder than my HJC FG-17 and whistles like a son of a bitch with the visor open.

    If only they made available to customers whether to choose between double D rings and micrometric. Can't stand that. Bought an E1 (graphic) for 420 euro.

    Arai brilliant but not faultless. A pain to take visor off if you want to ride goggles only and no drop down interior dark visor like Schuberth for example. Also no photochromic visor like Bell and Klim.. Still the best for me though. Surprised he didn't do Shoei Hornet as well.

    No Shoei X2 on this list? Hmmm. Shoei like Arai are both top of food chain. Both Arai and Shoei’s are meticulous about fit and fitment and without compromise. Which ever helmet fits you best should drive one’s choice as both Arai and Shoei are equal.

    My xd4 is a bastard to put on and take off. Unless I pull out enough foam padding from the cheek pads. I don't believe it to be quiet either. But once on its really good. Now if I could fit my drink tube from a camel back into the helmet to get a drink.
