When we got round to armouring, we had to actually get 4.8ltr twin turbo v8's with 550 hp to even get them to move. It actually works out cheaper to run one of them then it would for the diesel. We get roughly 7-9 mpg on the motorway ! Roughly 3-4 city! So much to the extent we had to have an extra fuel tank!
So they take the whole vehicle apart and stuff it with an under layer of similar shaped protective materials, replace external components like struts/shocks, fuel tanks with reinforced replacements etc. Might as well start building entire vehicles under your own brand name.

These courses are hella fun. I did one in Glynco, GA for the military. They failed to mention in the video that spirited driving will heat up the brakes in a pretty short amount of time, leaving you with a spongy brake pedal.
